Unlearning behaviour takes times, even if not proceeding with that behaviour would make sense in your head.
Let's normalize that going to therapy for a few times won't probably magically turn your life around, especially if you come from years of trauma or mental health issues (or both). Cut yourself some slack for not magically just dropping and unlearning the coping mechanism you have learned and kept for years, sometimes for decades, in order to survive. It's a process, and you're doing it at your own pace.

Superhero
At freshman orientation, 
we were broken into groups,
all these newly-adult kids
trying desperately to fit in
at a school we were told 
we should thus-forward call 
Our home.
and we were asked
in an icebreaker:
"what would your superpower be?"
I don't remember what I said,
but I remember that it was something unremarkable
like flying 
or invisibility...
teleportation, even, maybe.
Whatever I said,
that I can barely remember,
I remember that I didn't put too much thought in at all
because let's be real,
My future classmates and I all knew:
icebreakers were bullshit. 
Since freshman year ten years ago, 
I've probably asked and answered this question
twenty
 or 
thirty times. 
Rarely is my answer the same,
but never do I put more
than a moment's meandering thought
into a question only asked
to make the unknown, unwanted, and uncomfortable
Feel at least slightly uncoerced.
So when my therapist asked me
on the phone the other day 
"what would your superpower be?"
I almost said to fly away,
or shrink,
or disappear entirely.
I almost said it
without thought
without reason
just because...
after all,
flying sounded sensational,
and shrinking seemed to soothe me
and my life tends to lack the shock value
that only a disappearing act could supply
But I inhaled what I almost said
and took a pregnant pause instead...
and pondered what power would pulse through my veins?
If given the chance 
what service would I provide?
To save for someone else
from fleeing,
or shrinking,
or shriveling to nothingness…
breaking under the weight of their already broken world.
And how could I help?
I think to myself
when I, myself, can barely hold
the crushing sorrow
of my own pasts memories?
But that's the thing about superpowers:
they help you help others when you feel most helpless. 
I think they call it altruism?
Good for the sake of good. 
Selfless yet insatiable…
The urgency to save 
From fleeing or shrinking
Never once worrying about the damage to your own cape.
But is selfless really selfish, 
when its act is to avoid my own hidden pain? 
Pain I’ve concealed so long that it’s congealed 
into something I can’t find the power to dislodge. 
I need a superhero to save me, 
But I’ve done such a good job saving everyone else
That no one else
Can fathom 
That I--
That Me--
That “adult-kid” me--
Needs help to save herself from herself!
See, my superpower isn’t flying
or shrinking
or disappearing to nothingness.
It’s giving people my eyes
So they can see themselves
In the beauty and light that they’ve always been seen by me
But superpowers are remarkable
Unique
And One-of-a-kind.
So I’m left alone,
Wondering,

These are some common signs and symptoms that you might recognise. Everyone's experience is different, so you may experience some, none, or all of these things.
*Reliving aspects of what happened
This can include:
vivid flashbacks (feeling like the trauma is happening right now)
intrusive thoughts or images
nightmares
intense distress at real or symbolic reminders of the trauma
physical sensations such as pain, sweating, nausea or trembling.
Alertness or feeling on edge
This can include:
panicking when reminded of the trauma
being easily upset or angry
extreme alertness, also sometimes called 'hypervigilance'
disturbed sleep or a lack of sleep
irritability or aggressive behaviour
finding it hard to concentrate – including on simple or everyday tasks
being jumpy or easily startled
other symptoms of anxiety.
*Avoiding feelings or memories
This can include:
feeling like you have to keep busy
avoiding anything that reminds you of the trauma
being unable to remember details of what happened
feeling emotionally numb or cut off from your feelings
feeling physically numb or detached from your body
being unable to express affection
doing things that could be self-destructive or reckless
using alcohol or drugs to avoid memories.
Difficult beliefs or feelings
This can include:
feeling like you can't trust anyone
feeling like nowhere is safe
feeling like nobody understands
blaming yourself for what happened
overwhelming feelings of anger, sadness, guilt or shame.
The lack of sleep and the sense of never being at peace are exhausting.
Why does PTSD have physical effects?
This could be because when we feel stressed emotionally, our bodies release hormones called cortisol and adrenaline. This is the body's automatic way of preparing to respond to a threat, sometimes called the 'fight, flight or freeze' response.
Studies have shown that someone with PTSD will continue producing these hormones when they're no longer in danger, which is thought to explain some symptoms such as extreme alertness and being easily startled.
Some people also experience physical symptoms similar to symptoms of anxiety, such as headaches, dizziness, chest pains and stomach aches.
What are flashbacks?
A flashback is a vivid experience in which you relive some aspects of a traumatic event or feel as if it is happening right now. This can sometimes be like watching a video of what happened, but flashbacks do not necessarily involve seeing images, or reliving events from start to finish. You might experience any of the following:
seeing full or partial images of what happened
noticing sounds, smells or tastes connected to the trauma
feeling physical sensations, such as pain or pressure
experiencing emotions that you felt during the trauma.
You might notice that particular places, people or situations can trigger a flashback for you, which could be due to them reminding you of the trauma in some way. Or you might find that flashbacks seem to happen at random. Flashbacks can last for just a few seconds, or continue for several hours or even days.

If you are experiencing symptoms of PTSD, you might also find that you have difficulty with some everyday aspects of your life, such as:
looking after yourself
holding down a job
maintaining friendships or relationships
remembering things and making decisions
your sex drive
coping with change
simply enjoying your leisure time.

“It isn’t safe” he says, so he bought himself a collapsible baton to carry—should he ever be in the unfortunate position to get jumped.
A female partner says she won’t carry a weapon, 
but pulled out her noisemaker and set it off with pride.
“I may not have a baton,” she says “but I have this!”
When she set off that alarm 
that day…
In the back of the house,
I jumped in fear of the startling sound.
I wish I could have gained enough composure to tell her:
I too, had a noisemaker
It was on me when I was attacked .
In my hand when his hand grabbed my pussy
And I couldn’t activate it as he tried to stick his tongue down my throat.
It sat in my hand as he ran off laughing…
Silence surrounded me 
except the sound of his sing-song voice
“I love you” he repeated, as a danced and skipped away.
As everything else stood frozen in time.
With my hand on the noisemaker.
Frozen.
And the imprint of his hand on me... 
stuck there forever
As I tried to forge away forward
But instead 
collapsed on the street 
in silence.
So I said to the barista: 
“My noisemaker didn’t save me... better get yourself some mace”
