closest to canon Hawkins we can get
this is the map used in s2 and shows up in the canon show as well as in World's Turned Upside Down (also used as the base for most official artwork of Hawkins). as of now it's the most accurate map we have
there have been a few other maps on the show but those deviate a lot from what's seen in canon (like Bob's map showing a river near the town center that isn't really there). the only inconsistency with This map is that the County Coroner is a bit further south than in canon and that some locations that are referred to as "streets" in the show are marked as "roads" or "avenues" here. those are all minor changes though so as far as canon goes. this is the best map we've got
blue - bodies of water, white - buildings, green - residences, gray - streets, yellowish - speculative/not listed on the map but implied through the actual show
also, to explain further, i didn't make these locations up. all buildings in white and streets are already marked on the map, most of them are extremely hard to read and i just put more legible text on top. the Wheelers, Sinclairs, and Mayfields houses aren't listed but are easy to locate since their street names are on the map. only the yellow squares aren't explicitly confirmed on the map and are technically speculative since i added them based on canon information
(explanation of the reasoning for those placements under the cut for anyone that's interested. bc, personally, i hate seeing maps online that make plainly wrong claims without even trying to explain how they got there)
just starting off, almost every version of this map places the Wheeler and Sinclair home further north than me which is canonically false. those maps use a wrong scale. Lucas and Mike are almost next door neighbors (there is only One house number between theirs, but that house could also be located across the road from them, making them actual next door neighbors). also, Maple Street starts further south than a lot of people using this map seem to acknowledge. the actual order of the two houses is up for debate and could easily be switched though
Melvad's is technically also speculative since it isn't listed on the map (only the cinema and police station are). but looking at the town square in the show and the irl location of the stores you can pinpoint it's position
"Weathertop", the highest area in Hawkins, which is where Cerebro is located in s3. since the town is shown to be behind Starcourt when positioned on Wheatertop, the hill has to be located behind the mall
Hopper's trailer is shown to be next to a lake and only features in s1, the shape of the lake matches Lake Tippecanoe the closest but i'm not dead set on this
Benny's Burgers is canonically on Randolph Lane, the map doesn't feature this road but has a Randolph Way instead. it might be an entirely different road, or Randolph lane could be an unmarked offshoot of the marked Randolph Way. however, since Randolph Way leads out of Hawkins into a forested area near HNL and the forest the party looked for Will in, the general location of the road is probably a good guess for it's location
Mrs Driscoll's home is somewhere on Cornwallis Street. we don't know where on the street, but it's there somewhere. (the same also goes for the motel Billy and Karen wanted to meet up at, but since we never even saw the location i didn't mark it on the map)
the Brimborn Steelworks are on Cherry Oak Drive, accessible when driving down Cornwallis. the street Cherry Oak Drive also doesn't exist on the map. however, a street called Cherry Avenue conveniently directly connects to Cornwallis so i'm inclined to believe that's where the Steelwork is located (Cherry Oak Drive could also be an offshoot of Cherry Avenue or it could just be an inconsistency sploof)
the Byers home is marked twice on the map since it could be located on either road leading away from Mirkwood (Kerley or Cornwallis)
Skull rock and Reefer Rick's Cabin are both located at Lovers Lake but since we don't know their exact locations they're technically speculative
Garrot Street is only implied by canon and it's probably the loosest connection on here. Skull Rock is noted to be near "Cornwallis and Garrot". there is only two major/big roads noted near lovers lake, one of them is Cornwallis, the other one would then most likely be Garrot (also made likelier by the fact that the actual name of the road is completely illegible on the map and could be anything)
also note. the Eno River is also on this map, but i had to crop it a bit to fit a reasonable scale. it would be in the far northwest of the map (the south-most tip of it is still visible)
locations that become relevant later on and aren't marked on the map, that also aren't locatable through additional canon information would be things like Max's old home, the Roane Hill Cemetery, the Creel House on Morehead, and Pennhurst (even though we don't know if Pennhurst is actually in the Hawkins map are). also things like the community pool in s3 or town hall in s4 don't show up either

Who among us has not written about Les Miserables for some school project or another? I did for my capstone project in high school. Well so did one graduate of Kokomo high school in 1887. There were 10 in that year's graduating class and their names and the subject of their capstone project were printed in the local paper:
Miss Callie McNutt, "A Literary Mirror" Miss Mary Hunt, "The Key to the Safe Not the Gold" Miss Hattie Durett, "The Commonplace" Miss Nettie Leach, "Life's Perspective" Miss Kate Hunt, "The Danger is in the Desert" Frank Morris, "Mimer's Curse" Miss Maud Frazier, "Shall We Call It Charity, or Tribute?" Miss Tudie Ellis, "Injolras and Grantaire" Miss Della Hunt, "The Alpine Rose" Miss Myrtle Maris, "Ballast"
In trying to find out more about the intriguing Tudie Ellis, I considered that "Tudie" might be a misspelling of "Trudie" and I looked for more information on her school. I found an almost identical record of the graduating class of 1887 on an Indiana genealogy archive with one difference: her name is listed as Martha Ellis (married name Hopkins). With that information, I found a Martha Ellis Hopkins from Indiana, born in 1870 and who had a sister named Sara Ellis, also a graduate of Kokomo High School. The Indiana Historical Society has a collection of Martha's papers but they all pertain to her role as Republican Party precinct vice-committee woman in Jasper County, Indiana. Also the Tippecanoe County Historical Association has her bicycle in their collections....but sadly no one seems to have her high school paper about in Les Mis.

WHAT is going on in alleghany county?? there are a few other spikes this shape, but almost every other county in the country is less than half that (saline ar, teton mt, tippecanoe in, are the ones at more than half), with the vast majority being under 500 covid copies/ml wastewater. there are maybe a dozen counties that had larger spikes than this during omicron
saw this week that over 7m have taken the new vaccine and that's 2% of the country's population. last updated booster topped out at 17%, which means, at best, 97% of the population is not fully vaccinated and 82% was not last year
the branch of strains that this year's vaccine is updated to target (xbb) is no longer the most prevalent one (eg5). the total of all xbb strains is larger (60%), but eg5 is now the most prevalent single strain (35%)
hospitalizations appear to be going down and remain at a lower level than usual, but two months ago we ended our 15-consecutive-week record of less than 1000 deaths/wk, which continue to rise at a rate of about +100 deaths/wk (greyed out recent weeks are incomplete tallies)

| | ➻ ( rudy pankow, twenty-two, he/him ) did you hear all the drama from rick’s party ? yeah apparently ( gareth emerson ) was there. i think someone said they work at ( sam goody ) and their favourite song is ( love bites - judas priest ) and that they tend to be ( creative, impulsive ) but also seemed quite ( self-destructive, facetious ). everyone says they remind them of ( liquorice rolling papers, split lips, drum solos and yard sale paperbacks stuffed in your back pocket ) …. i guess i could see that too. | |
pinterest
name : gareth jason emerson
nicknames : grizz, gar, gar-bear, grizzly-adams
age : twenty-two
pronouns : he/him
sexuality : bisexual
birthday : august 30th
birthplace : hawkins, indiana
family : jolene emerson (mother), graham emerson (father), whitney emerson (y. sister), archie emerson † (y. brother)
tattoos & piercings : septum and tongue pierced though mostly hides these unless he’s partying in indianapolis or chicago or with the freaks. inner bicep piece of a black dragon curled around a great sword, roman numerals of archie & whitney’s birthdays on his left wrist, a tiny banana between his pointer finger on the right hand for monkey, his dog. a few ugly stick and pokes and some newer ones that are way less ugly.
aesthetics : room temperature pizza, spending half your pay check on polaroid film, a wave of good aftershave, headbanging until your neck feels like it’ll snap, letting your little sister paint your nails, engine oil in denim, love bites by judas priest playing faintly from a pair of headphones, dappled sunlight through forest leaves, sweat in your eyes, broken drumsticks, slinging your arm round the neck of your friend who can’t stop laughing, purple red bruises blooming like a valentines bouquet across your ribs, lovingly restoring old vinyl in the garage, the cold brush of a chain dangling from your lover’s neck against your racing pulse, smashing your fist into concrete until the knuckles split, the scent of old paper, cracked spines and well loved books.
never worn a matching pair of socks in his life, gareth liked garage sale paperbacks, pizza rolls and not much else. back in the day, the first five or six years of gareth’s miserable existence, the family had had a nice ranch style place by the woods but then his dad lost his job and they lost the house. from then on the family were usually too on top of one another, grizz always seeming to end up underfoot.
rock and roll’s the devil’s work, obviously. has soundproofed part of their small basement to practice drumming without getting yelled at.
[family death cw] though he never talks about it at all any more, about twelve years ago grizz’s five year old little brother drowned in lake tippecanoe when his dad briefly took his eyes off them. this kind of tore the family up. his mom left when grizz was fourteen, leaving a wad of cash in an envelope in his dresser and asking him to promise to be a ‘good boy’ until she came back. still waiting.
got a job the second he could during high school and has stayed employed ever since, though bounced around a fair bit.
[child abuse cw] his dad rarely goes a couple weeks without spiralling into a rage and physically attacking grizz which has been the same since his sophomore year, he’s just about to try and move out and find his own place after saving for a few years out of high school but he doesn’t want to leave his sixteen year old sister in the house.
used to be on the track team, a very fast runner.
held average grades at the start of high school, got some special attention from his english teacher who believed sincerely that he could do better if he just focused. managed to do pretty well by graduation but lost confidence in himself and his ability to adapt to living anywhere but hawkins because of his inability to pick a college. feels kind of cursed and stuck in roane county.
corroded coffin is his outlet, along with the ice hockey league he sometimes plays in a town over. has a notebook full of polaroids, quotes or lyric ideas scrawled on diner napkins, drive-in theatre tickets, the stamp from clubs in indianapolis and anything else you can think of, that is usually stuffed in the small of his back.
wears a lot of flannel and his extremely battered leather jacket basically every day of the year.
spends tooooons of time carefully painting the miniatures with tiny brushes for eddie’s d&d campaigns. usually plays a monk or a druid.
has a dog that is a mongrel of too many breeds to count named monkey, he has a neckerchief.
drums on every surface. all. the. time.
built a tree house and dugout in the middle of the forest for his friends from fifth to eighth grade, grizz’s dad is a carpenter by trade so he knows his way around.
makes a meaannnnn mac & cheese, is pretty much always down to clown.
pretty handy at fixing most types of motorbike, has been the only person to touch his own bike for about three years.

In October of ‘22, I posted some photos of a view that hadn’t been available for a few decades: across the Wabash Valley from the corner of Wood and Chauncey Street allowing someone to see downtown Lafayette and the Tippecanoe County courthouse. The courthouse is still visible, for now, but a new high rise apartment building is going up, so that scene will be gone in a few more weeks.
Just a block away, a building that’s been occupied since 2018 (I think it was 2018) is having its facing re-done.
With traffic re-routed for some time now to allow for boom lifts (boom lifts are popular around here these days), much of the fake brick-facing is being pulled off sheet by sheet, revealing the underlayment.
What prompted the removal I don’t know, but it wouldn’t surprise me if something hadn’t sealed correctly allowing for leaks or the possibility of pieces falling off (but you can’t use my supposition as evidence of anything, just to be clear).
R. Jake Wood, 2023.

Write-In Ballots Challenge Sanity
During the last national election (in the otherwise cursed year of 2024), Tippecanoe County, Indiana received a number of write-in ballots for the office of President. I've always thought of write-ins as being the sign of a healthy, free country, where citizens can voice their displeasure with the two main party candidates.
But sometimes, not so much.
In addition to the write-ins, one ballot was held back as provisional because the voter dropped it off on election night--at a Colorado polling place. Half the people of Colorado probably don't even know where Indiana is, let alone Tippecanoe County, and vice-versa.
As far as write-in votes, the biggest vote-getter was Jill Stein, who was running as the Green Party nominee. I don't know what their platform is, but I like the color.
39 voters chose the candidates for the Party of Socialism and Liberation. I guess their goals are pretty much right there in the title: They believe revolution is necessary to establish socialism. In my study of history I've noticed most socialist revolutions lead to a few people being in charge, and a lot of other people being dead.
Cornel West and Melina Abdullah also snagged a few votes. No, I don't know either, let me check ...
Oh--activists! Also socialists, and although that's not my thing, I have to admire Cornel West's awesome and intimidating hairstyle.
U.S. Rep. Thomas Massie, a Republican from Kentucky, got two votes, but I hear he's way more popular in Kentucky. He got the same amount of votes as Kanye West, who I hear is not as popular in Kentucky.
Jesus got 6 votes, and God got 3. Honestly, it seems like those should be combined.
So, who else got write-in votes?
Mike Rowe, he of "Dirty Jobs", one of the few people in the entertainment industry I'd actually vote for. Also one of the few who has an actual idea of what the average Joe does for a living.
Johnny Cash, who I'd probably also vote for except he's kind of, well ... dead. Not that I'd trying to discriminate against dead people, mind you. Lots of dead people vote every election.
Former President John Quincy Adams, by all accounts a man of principle, but sadly also dead. For awhile, now. He would be eligible, though, as he was a one term President, and I'm not sure there's anything in the Constitution forbidding dead candidates. Some people in Congress look awfully dead.
John Quincy--who wouldn't love those sideburns?
Singer Willie Nelson. I can't help thinking he'd have a "legalize marijuana" plank in his platform. If not a plank, at least a joint.
Alfred E. Neuman, the "What--me worry?" mascot of MAD Magazine, which doesn't have the circulation it once did. He may be a little too laid back.
Michael Vick, sportsball star who also ran a dog fighting ring that got him put in prison. Lots of politicians have gotten away with worse stuff than that, but as a dog lover I kind wish he was still behind bars. Which ... also isn't necessarily fatal to a political career.
Kermit the Frog. Yeah, I'd totally vote for him. I mean, he kept the Muppet Show more or less under control, and as First Lady Miss Piggy would also serve as butt-kicker in chief.
And finally, the one I'm really surprised didn't get more votes:
"They All Suck."
