Sunshine beyond the storm - GR5, June 2021

Algy could see that the weather in the wild west Highlands of Scotland was feeling nervous and agitated. It could not make up its mind to any particular pattern or state, and an apparently never-ending succession of clouds sweeping in from the Atlantic brought rapidly changing conditions. Algy wondered whether its unstable mood was owing to apprehension arising from the forecast of a massive storm which was predicted to hit the area at the end of the week…

At times the skies did clear to a beautiful blue and the world was rendered in colour… but not for long. More often, soft greys swept all the colours away and frequent showers rained down on Algy's head as the hooded crows called peevishly from the tall spruces nearby.

However, determined to take advantage of even the briefest moments of sunshine after the long, dreary months of darkness, Algy remained undaunted. Hopping up into a convenient tree in one of the drier interludes, he waited patiently… and sure enough, before too long, he was rewarded with a touch of almost-warm, glowing light… for just a few short moments, for unfortunately the sun had not "come to dwell":

The Sun—just touched the Morning— The Morning—Happy thing— Supposed that He had come to dwell— And Life would all be Spring! She felt herself supremer— A Raised—Ethereal Thing! Henceforth—for Her—What Holiday! Meanwhile—Her wheeling King— Trailed—slow—along the Orchards— His haughty—spangled Hems— Leaving a new necessity! The want of Diadems! The Morning—fluttered—staggered— Felt feebly—for Her Crown— Her unanointed forehead— Henceforth—Her only One!

Summer solstice 2025 Ink on paper

This was drawn as a commission for another illustration of @porcelainseashore's lovely stories; once again I got to draw Wynter, her Giovanni Night Road courier, but this time twice in the same picture: as a memory and as a present time observer of the memory. The story, if you would like to read it, is here on her blog; it was written for the Beach Episode By Night event.

It was quite an interesting task to draw this. The thing with an ink drawing is that I have to be completely sure of what I want to do, because there isn't going to be any room for corrections; so in this instance I had to keep two separate images of the same composition clear in my mind's eye. I'm happy I got to do this, I enjoyed it a lot.
