Pregnant (DMC5!Dante x Fem!Reader)

Recently, you'd been feeling weird. You were growing increasingly fatigued, your back ached, you were feeling nauseous nearly all the time, and your mood changed like the wind. You'd randomly burst into tears whenever you heard a nostalgic song on the radio; you were often grumpy and snapped at your friends, and sometimes just felt really happy for no reason. Initially, you blew it off as exhaustion from work, until you missed your period. The entire month flew by and there wasn't a single drop of menstrual blood--one of the most telling symptoms of pregnancy. You had to check now, so you raced to the pharmacy and bought a pregnancy test.

An hour or so later, you were curled up on the bathroom floor, sobbing, the positive-reading test in your hands. It was true. You were pregnant, and worse yet, you knew who the father was: Dante. You two had done the deed not too long ago--without protection. The two of you were so caught up in your lovemaking, you had forgotten about possible consequences. Your mind was currently in a state of delirium; thoughts swirling about like a violent blizzard. You were thrilled to discover that a child was growing inside you, but at the same time, dreaded telling Dante that the kid was his. Despite their differences, Dante and Vergil were still brothers who shared some of their core traits--and you didn't want your child to end up like Nero. After a few moments of mentally debating it, you decided to take a breather and go to one of the girls for help. Snatching up your wallet and keys, you headed for the door right when it flew open of it's own accord, or rather, Dante's accord. He strode into the room, a smile on his face, then wrapped you in a big hug. "Heya, babe! Miss me?" You nodded, wincing as he pressed you against his frame, which applied unwanted pressure on your painfully sensitive breasts. "I did," You managed to choke out, struggling to free yourself from his grip. "I missed you so much." Dante roughly patted you on the back; a gesture that normally wouldn't bother you, but now that your back was an aching, sore mess, it did. "Ow! Stop being so rough, Dante!" Dante pulled away from you, confused. "What? Did-did I do something wrong? Why ya being all grouchy?" Realizing that your behavior was going to give you away, you immediately sobered up. "No, it's just...." You sucked in a breath, trying to think up a lie quickly. "I...uhhh...pulled a muscle in my back earlier, and it hurts if you touch it." Dante blinked at you a few times before his bewildered expression melted into a grin. "Aw, is that all? I could massage it for you if you like." You forced a smile; sudden pangs of nausea were filling your stomach. "No thanks, Dante, I'll be fine." Dante frowned, sensing this behavior wasn't like you at all--you always enjoyed his massages because his hands were so strong. "You sure you're OK, Y/N? You're acting weird." You gagged; the sudden need to vomit overcoming you. Wordlessly, you raced to the bathroom and barely made it to the toilet in time. Out came your breakfast, lunch, and last night's dinner, followed by an amalgamation of other substances you didn't want to recognize. Dante appeared around the corner, brow furrowed. "Y/N, are you sick?" You shook your head, sighing. If there was ever a time to tell him, it was now. "I'm not sick, Dante...I'm pregnant." Dante's blue eyes widened; his mouth dropped open in shock. "Wh-really?And...and the dad...is me?" You nodded miserably, feeling another wave of vomit coming. Still awed, Dante rushed forward and held your hair back while you regurgitated all that was in your stomach. After you'd been cleaned up and all that, you seated him on the couch and gave it to him straight. "Yes, Dante, you're the dad. I'm pregnant with your kid." Dante was amazed and overjoyed, but something about your tone didn't sit right with him. "Why do you sound so mad? Do...do you not want a kid?" He looked hurt, and disappointed, as if raising a child was something he'd longed for his entire life. "I do want a child...but I'm just...worried.." Dante gently took your hand in his, kissed it, and asked, "About what?" Before you could stop yourself, you'd burst into tears.

"I'm just worried you'll leave me like Vergil left Nero!" You ended up blurring out, while sobbing into his chest. "I don't want that for our kid! I want you to stay with me and have a family!" Dante was silent for a while, gently rubbing circles into you back while you cried and told him all your worries. Eventually, he pulled away, but only so he could wipe away the tears in your eyes and kiss your cheeks. "I won't leave. I'm not that old asshole, Y/N, just cause we look the same doesn't mean we'll act the same. I want to raise a family with you. I really do." He reached down and rubbed your belly. "I can't wait for this kid to get here, he's gonna be a badass just like his old man!" You laughed, nestling into his shoulder. "How do you know it'll be a boy? What if it's a girl?" Dante shrugged in response. "Then she'll be badass, like her old man, and probably'll be as pretty as her momma." You grinned, wrapping your arms around his neck and kissing his cheek. "I sure hope so..."

♡ Pregnancy care headcannons ♡

-Carries you everywhere, even if your destination is just across the room.

-Sets up a nursery like 8 months ahead of time, claiming that he needs all the time he can get to decorate it to "suit the baby's tastes".

-Throws a huge (alcohol free) party at DMC and uses it as an excuse to dramatically announce your pregnancy.

-Can't stop rubbing it in his brother's face, as until recently, a child was one of the few things Vergil had that Dante didn't.

-Cooks the weirdest dishes (like spaghetti with chocolate sauce and omlettes with rice in them) but that's okay cause you so happen to be craving these weird foods.

-CUDDLES AND HUGS 24/7!

-Seriously cannot wait for this kid to be born, he has so many plans.

5) Ichiban Kasuga from Yakuza

What else can I say about Ichiban other than he’s almost stupidly optimistic and no matter how hard of a curveball life throws at him, he ALWAYS keeps the attitude of "once you hit rock bottom the only way is up.”, always trying to both see and bring out the best in people. Also he’s a massive Dragon Quest fan so obviously I’d end up obsessing over this beautiful specimen of a man who at the age of 42 still is not 100% sure where women pee from.

6) Erik from Dragon Quest XI

Honestly I could have EASILY put the entire main cast of Dragon Quest XI on this list because the characters of that game are simply that likeable and well written, but if I had to choose one, it would have to be your very first party member and the hero’s best friend and totally platonic roommate Erik. This man’s sassy attitude yet undying loyalty and devotion towards the hero is so strong not even the apocalypse itself could tear the hero and Erik apart for long.

7) Ryuji Sakamoto from Persona 5

I think at this point y’all are starting to see a pattern in my favourite characters: Ryuji is loyal like a golden retriever puppy, absolutely adorable and sweet with a severe lack of Braincells.

8) Silver the Hedgehog from the Sonic the Hedgehog Franchise

Silver has literally been my favourite Sonic character since Childhood. His whole stick is that he’s unbeatable optimistic. Despite becoming from an apocalyptic future where everything is covered in flames, he never stops believing that things can become better if you try. His naivety however leads to characters like Mephilis abusing his optimism for their own agenda. But none of that stops Silver from

being one of my greatest comfort characters.

9) William James Moriarty from Moriarty the Patriot

Second up, in the spirit of the ask game, wanna maybe talk a bit about "To Break Not Once, But Twice"? The title absolutely piqued my interest 👀

Fun fact about "To Break Not Once, But Twice" before I start talking about it: this is actually one of the very first DMC fics I started writing last year before I started making NASNAH! I plan to return to it at some point even if I never post it. I just got caught up with my current works and definitely want to revise a few parts of it in the future before continuing it.

I was partially inspired by a few songs. Most notably this cover of Alice since the song has just a really bittersweet feeling to it overall.

This is gonna be lengthy so I'll hide it under a cut. <3

This fic was a "what if" that took the series back to even before the DMC3 manga, following Vergil as he meets my version of Nero's mother, him leaving, returning by chance, and choosing to stay not out of love but out of something he can't quite name. However it wouldn't last forever because Vergil would be even more desperate to seek protection for his newfound peace and family. That would lead to him still working with Arkham to break the seals so they can raise the Temen-Ni-Gru. When they're broken and Vergil returns to Fortuna to guide them somewhere safe to lie low- he's met with a very familiar and heartbreaking sight of a house on fire and blood covering the path leading up to it. His motivation to raise the Temen-Ni-Gru changes after that night as he's certain that they'd met the same fate as his mother.

I have scenes ranging quite a ways through the timeline for this one, but that's the main gist of where the title for the fic comes from.

I'll share a few excerpts with you, too! These are all heavily unedited and before I got back into the swing of writing after a long break so I can't promise any level of quality. I hope you enjoy them all the same. (I will be redacting the name I use for Nero's mother because I'm still on the fence about sharing it though.)

“Or burned at the stake, based on their beliefs. I’d rather-“ Vergil stifles a yawn “-on my own terms.” “I feel the same.” She says. Then, she’s leaning over in front of Vergil to look him in the eyes. She plucks the cards from his hands “But I think for now it’s time for me to put you to bed, instead. I had no clue that just two cups could get you like this. Come on- up you go.” She grabs Vergil’s arms to guide him up, and Vergil grabs her arms back to keep from swaying as he stands. He snaps up Yamato from where it was resting beside his seat and almost stumbles over. “It’s not right- for a Son of-“ Vergil mumbles without finishing his sentence at all. He allows her to guide him down the hallway to a bed, but won’t let her set the Yamato aside. He holds onto it in his hand and snarls when she tries to pry it from his grasp. “Very well. Sleep with it.” Her gentle tone curbs the knife of desperation that tears through Vergil’s body. She manages to get him out of his coat and pulls a blanket up over his shoulders. Vergil doesn’t know when he falls asleep. Just that the crickets outside and the snoring that starts up behind him is enough to tell him that he’s safe.

“It doesn’t have to go down like this, Vergil!” Dante shouts, avoiding a Judgement Cut and stabbing forward with Rebellion. “You know nothing.” Vergil spits “You haven’t lost anything!” “Is that the game we’re gonna play then?” Dante taunts “What’s worth opening the gates to hell for? You trash my shop, wreck the city-“ “They’re dead, Dante!” Vergil’s voice cracks as he raises it, bringing Force Edge off of his back and meeting Dante’s strike in the middle. His eyes are filling up with tears and blurring his vision. It’s too painful. It’s too raw. He transforms because the embrace of his own demonic power is just enough to keep him sane. His wings fan out in an attempt to intimidate. Force Edge comes down with each of his thoughts that emerge through his distorted voice “It’s gone! All of it! My home, my peace, my son, his mother-“ Dante falters at the initial outburst and recovers enough to meet Vergil’s flurry of blows. He braces himself on one knee because Vergil’s fighting style has never been sheer exertion in an attempt to overpower. Then there’s a break in the swings and Dante stabs Rebellion forward through Vergil’s chest- spilling blood over them both. Vergil’s transformation shatters apart in blue embers. He falls and Dante catches him. Vergil coughs up blood while Dante supports him from collapsing entirely. “Whatever you’re thinking- it’s not going to bring them back. Trust me.” Dante’s voice falls quiet as he eases Rebellion out of Vergil’s chest.

Vergil may not have noticed in the haze of pain and on the brink of death, but V understands all too well. The child that was harboring Yamato is no doubt of Sparda descent. In Fortuna. If Vergil had truly caused such harm- No. V shakes his head to clear his thoughts. “You okay there, Shakespeare?” Griffon asks, tone concerned for once “You spaced out pretty hard.” “Merely contemplating something that’s of no real concern right now.” V says “Ah, so the kid.” Griffon says, swooping in front of V and landing on a nearby lamp post “You know it’s never too late to send a card and some flowers. Something along the lines of "sorry for taking your arm because I was dying but I’m your old man and want to get to know you ‘cause I thought you were dead." Maybe twenty bucks in the envelope to be safe.” “I doubt that would fix anything.” “Okay, so thirty bucks. Got it. What’s that courier ad we saw a block back-“ “Griffon.” V hisses “Enough.” Shadow leaps down from V’s tattoos and weaves around his legs. He rests a hand on its head. “Go easy on him? I promised I’d stop calling him princess so I’m not treating him like one anymore neither!” Griffon ruffles his feathers “What’s done is done, and we’ve gotta take care of that big bastard that took Yamato with him before he brings hell to Earth!”

As episode 11 will be rescheduled to next week (and while this is quite a bummer), it also gave me a chance to delve deeper into the numbers (+ combinations) present on the plates of the car of No. 3 and KMC.

Its really fascinating and fitting (personality wise) what I found out after a long and deep dive into all of it.

Lets dive into the topic!

Lets start with the number combinations present on the plate of No.3's car

31.

Also called an angel number, 31 represents new beginnings, fresh opportunities, creativity, positivity, motivation and progress. It helps to let go of old habits, to move forwards.

When this number appears in someones life, the angels are telling them that new beginnings are on the way. They want people to trust themselves and the universe to make the necessary changes to achieve their goals.

It also signifies the need for open communication, honest and trust (especially with a partner)

67.

Yet another angel number, 67 exist to represent spiritual awakening, fulfilling purpose and shows the "right path"

It is also associated with new beginnings, fresh starts and new opportunities. If someone is looking for a change in their life, the number 67 may be a sign that they should make some changes. (It is a powerful combination of 6 and 7, more on these numbers later)

In the bible, 67 has a significant meaning as well, It appears on multiple occasions:

1. The Apostle Paul conducts his final and fifth missionary journey between 63 to 67 A.D. His journey begins in Rome after the Roman Empire acquits him of the charges against him and he is freed. He then sails to Crete and travels to Nicopolis where he will write the books of 1. Timothy and Titus. In 67 A.D., while in prison, Paul writes his final and fourteenth book called 2. Timothy. 2. The twelve Minor Prophets (Amos, Habakkuk, Haggai, Hosea, Joel, Jonah, Malachi, Micah, Nahum, Obadiah, Zechariah, and Zephaniah) have a total number of 67 chapters.

3. Psalm 67, credited to King David, is a song praising God that expresses his desire that the whole world come to understand the salvation the Eternal offers to all humans. »May God be gracious to us, and bless us, and cause His face to shine upon us. Selah. So that Your way may be known on earth, Your salvation among all nations . . . Let the people praise You, O God; let all the people praise You (verses 1 - 2, 5).«

Here we have yet another angel number. This time, it helps to manifestin dreams, signifies positive energy and development and just like 67, its to be associated with enlightenment and spiritual awakening. It also symbolizes the imminent endings and terminations of some events in ones life.

In numerology, a 3 is associated with harmoney, wisdom, understanding, joy, abundance, success and good fortune. It is also associated with Jupiter (both the god and the planet)

It also appears in the bible on multiple occasions:

1. Number 3 is mentioned 467 times in God's word. It derives its symbolism from the fact that it is the first of four spiritually perfect numerals (the others being 7, 10 and 12). The 3 righteous patriarchs before the flood were Abel, Enoch and Noah. After the deluge, there was the three righteous "fathers" of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. 2. Jesus prayed three times in the Garden of Gethsemane before His arrest. He was placed on the cross at the 3rd hour of the day (9 a.m.) and died at the 9th hour. There were 3 hours of darkness that covered the land while Jesus was suffering on the cross from the 6th hour to the 9th hour. Christ was dead for three full days and nights. 3. In Norse Mythology it also holds significance

1. Prior to Ragnarök, there will be three hard winters without an intervening summer. These winters are called "Fimbulwinter" (meaning awful, migthy winter in old norse)- these winters mean no summer in between, but filled with snow, bitter frost and icy storms. (There is speculation that climate change, which began in Scandinavia at the end of the Nordic Bronze Age, gave rise to the legend of the Fimbulwinter.) 2. Odin endured three hardships upon the World Tree in his quest for the runes: he hanged himself, wounded himself with a spear, and suffered from hunger and thirst. 3. Bor had three sons: Odin (father god in norse mythology associated with wisdom, healing, death, royalty, the gallows, knowledge, war, battle, victory, sorcery, poetry, frenzy, and the runic alphabet), Vili and  Vé. All three sons are the creators of the world.

In greek mythology it too makes its appearance through the 3 sons of Cronos (god of time)

1. Zeus (god of sky and thunder) known for: turning his first wife into a fly which he then ate, cursing Sisyphus to push a giant boulder up a hill forever, chaining prometheus to a rock so an eagle could eat his liver, consistently being unfaithful to his wife (Hera), confining Tantalus in the underworld out of pure reach of nourishment, turning into a cloud to seduce Io, tricking Pandora into opening the box and ultimately turning herself into the burden of humanity, wiping out humankind, binding Ixion to an eternally burning wheel, forcing Atlas to hold the world on his shoulders, raping Callisto (whom he then turned into a bear) as well as Antiope and Alcmene (and many other female gods) 2. Poseidon (god of sea, storms, earthquakes and horses) known for: fighting in the troja war where he created such a huge earthquake it nearly destroyed the underworld, raping Athena and Demeter (and many more) 3. Hades (god of the underworld and the dead) known for kidnapping Persephone and tricking her into marrying him

(The roman equivalents are Saturn, Jupiter, Neptun and Pluto)

Other religions also reference the number 3

The Wiccan Rule of Three. The Triple Goddess: Maiden, Mother, Crone (the three fates) The Slavic god Triglav has three heads. There were three primary gods in Babylonia mythology (Anu, Bel, Ea) Three aspects to the Egyptian sun god (Khepri, Re, Atum)

And it represents the male principles

The number 3 is a very mystical and spiritual number featured in many folktales (three wishes, three guesses, three little pigs, three bears, three billy goats gruff). Plato saw 3 as being symbolic of the triangle, the simplest spatial shape, and considered the world to have been built from triangles.

In German folklore a paper triangle with a cross in each corner and a prayer in the middle was thought to act as protection against gout, as well as protecting a cradle from witches.

Three black animals were often sacrificed when attempting to conjure up demons. On the other hand, a three-coloured cat was a protective spirit. In William Shakespeare’s Macbeth (1606–07) there are three witches, and their spell begins, “Thrice the brindled cat hath mewed,” reflecting such superstitions.

21 means to enter a time of abundance. For those who have been dealing with a time of transition or facing difficulties, seeing this number can be a positive sign that soon this period will be behind you, and you can take the lessons of the past and put them to good use in your bright and beautiful future. This number has a special meaning - one connected to comfort, protection, and positive energy, helping you enter the next chapter of your life path.

In the bible, 21 is present as well

1. It represents great wickedness of rebellion and sin. After the people left Egyptian bondage, they had twenty-one major rebellious events as they wandered the wilderness. 2. The book of Judges and the gospel of John contain 21 chapter 3. The book of Hebrews contains materials from twetnty-one Old Testament books 4. In 2. Timothy the apostel Paul writes of 21 sins which show the exceeding wickedness of self and sin. He begins chapter 3 with a warning; "But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: For men will…" he then proceeds to list the sind humans will indulge in: 1) selfishly love themselves 2) Love money 3) Bragging 4) Be proud of themselves 5) Blaspheme 6) Disregard and disobe their parents 7) Not be thankful for what they have 8) Reject being holy 9) Will not have natural affection 10) Will be uncompromising 11) Falsely accuse others 12) Lack of any self-control 13) Will be fierce 14) Hate anyone who does good 15) Betray others 16) Will act hardheaded 17) Will have exalted, selfish views 18) Lovers of pleasure 19) Reject loving god 20) Will seem superficially to be godly 21) Deny God's power

The number of nothingness. freedom and no limitations. It is also often referred to as the void, as it represents potential and choice. It most likely means that positive change is on the way

In Chinse numerology on the other hand it takes on a quite positive meaning (beginning of all things (and is generally considered a good number, because it sounds like 良 (pinyin: liáng), which means 'good'.

The number of completion, although not a final ending. 9 means "near the final destination", and represents fulfillment of one cycle so you can prelare to initiate the next one as well as ebb and flow.

Again, another important number in the bible

It represents the fruits of God's Holy Spirit. These fruits are faithfulness, gentleness, goodness, joy, kindness, long suffering, love, peace and self-control

And it also appears in Norse Mythology

1. The universe is divided into nine worlds which are all connected by the world tree "Yggdrasil". 2. The number is also associated with Odin, as that is how many days he hung from the world tree Yggdrasil before attaining knowledge of the runes » Odin's self-sacrifice: But he wanted to know everything and gain wisdom and knowledge of things hidden from him (runes). -He managed to get his hands on some vocaloid software with his boomer brain and spent a whole day making auto tuned noise with you.

-Thinks the dances you do are pretty cool, even if they're more "girl coded" than anything else.

-Guess what? He's started doing them too, and believe it or not, he might actually be doing them better than you.

-Being the extremely motivated person that he is, Vergil scoffed at vocaloid and its somewhat annoying, perky beats.

-He first thought of the music as screechy, fake, and irritating, undeserving of his attention.

-Or so he said, for you see, after about a week of you forcing the bubbly, upbeat stuff into his ears, he started to enjoy it.

-Though he'd sooner die than let anyone else know this, he's added a great deal of vocaloid songs to his playlist, alongside Bury The Light, of course.

-He doesn't like watching you do your goofy dances because they're cringe, and they activate his innate desire to destroy all cringiness, which he must now suppress because he doesn't want to hurt you.

-Tried doing one of your dances in private and didn't like how it felt, or how it looked, so he stopped and vowed never to do it again.

-Nero thought vocaloid was alright. It wasn't his favorite style of music, but it wasn't his least favorite either.

-Nero prefers edgier, borderline emo songs as opposed to this high-pitched squealing, so you'll have to understand.

-Another reason why he might not be so fond of the stuff is because he can't understand most of what the singers are saying, thanks to the language barrier, which, for some reason, bothers him.

-Won't stop you from enjoying it, though; to each their own.

-Thinks the dances you do are so ridiculous and exaggerated, so he teases you (lightheartedly, of course) about them nearly every chance he gets.

-Won't let anyone else do that, though. Nero and Nero alone is allowed to make fun of your dancing, not a single other soul.

-V has little to no musical knowledge aside from Classical, so he was very interested in this all-new concept that he was discovering.

-Like a teenager falling into their first nightcore phase, (believe me, I've been there) V became obsessed with vocaloid.

-He listens to every song and playlist of songs he can find, getting really excited whenever you recommend something to him.

-You two gush about your favorite songs, singers, etc. nearly all the time.

-Thinks the dances you do are pretty cute (V is the definition of a simp) and wants to learn how to do them too.

Author's notes: I wheezed when I noticed it was Dante with the very 90's dance remix of Baker Street, since Vergil's first Devil May Dance edition was with Baker Street - the non dance-y version of it. Oh, I love when fate makes oposite-complimentary twins so obvious *sighs*

About the Song: Originally by Gerry Rafferty, Baker Street is a song with a catchy saxophone riff and lyrics that are quite existential about life and its changes. It has a mixed version by Undercover, the one in question, and being a child of the 90's I'd say I listened more to this version in the early 00's rather than the original one. Love 'em both, though.

“Nah, babe, can’t let you slack off like that!” Turning back at you, Dante stood with both hands on his hips. “It’s trainin’ time. Gotta get those muscles strong enough to fight demons.”

“Oh, yeah. Sweet muffins are as delicious as ya, babe!” His answer came with Dante starting to move his hips from side to side on the rhythm of the song. You never thought the remix of Baker Street would be so fitting for his fitness sessions, but there you were.

“Jeez, who are you now?! Jane Fonda?!” You had to laugh back as Dante did the same, trying to get you to move alongside him.

“I’m gonna be if I need to! Leotard and everythin’!” He pointed back at you, making you laugh even more. You had to give in, moving slightly. “C’mon! Gotta get some energy goin’!”

With those words, Dante took his shirt off, throwing it back on his desk, standing side by side with you. While watching, you just sighed in response, rolling your eyes.

“That’s low, you devil.”

“Hey, I do what I gotta do.” Dante winked back at you. “C’mon. Let’s start with a couple of jumpin’ jacks.”

“Yeah, why not kill me right at the start…!” You complained but accompanied him either way.

Exercising with Dante was always fun. He liked keeping it fun and upbeat, choosing high energy songs and mostly strength exercises you were both used to.

Even so, following him wasn’t an easy task. You often talked about that with Kyrie: sometimes, Nero decided to train alongside her, and she always had a hard time. Kyrie wasn’t weak nor in a bad cardio shape, but keeping up with Nero… It was a thing in itself.

You immediately understood when she talked about it with you for the first time. Training with Dante was a pain – you and Kyrie did different kinds of trainings, but even if the Spardas said they would keep it light for humans, they had a hard time knowing what light meant physically.

Lady later joined that conversation, mentioning the very few times she made the mistake of going to a local gym with Trish – the devil never seemed to get tired and lifting weights was so easy, every bodybuilder at the place ended up overworking themselves trying to prove they could lift more than Trish. Long story short, they couldn’t and ended up in the hospital while the devil woman left for tea and macarons with Lady post workout.

And Lady didn’t do half of the things Trish did but looked like she had just ran a marathon three times in a row. Trish was barely blushing.

Living with devils really wasn’t easy for humans like yourselves.

“Ei, you’re doin’ pretty good today, hot stuff. Dunno why you were complainin’.” Dante winked at you as he finished the jumping jacks, ready to start a new set of exercises. You just rolled your eyes.

“You say this all the time, red devil.” You placed your hands on your hips, already feeling your breath accelerated. Dante, in the other hand, was completely normal. “I’m always doing pretty well for a human.”

“That’s ‘cause you’re awesome, babe.” With those words, he placed a quick peck on your forehead, before starting moving around once more. “C’mon. We’re just startin’.”

“I’m gonna regret this, I’m pretty sure…” You shook your head, sighing. He was an endless ball of energy when depression didn’t hit.

When it did, though, it was almost impossible to get Dante off his chair. He was an immovable force tossed on the big Devil May Cry desk and there wasn’t much you could do – although, you could always find a way to grab him out of his deepest nightmares.

There was a reason why you would always follow him around whenever Dante was that happy and wanted to dance, exercise, go out, have fun or whatever. It warmed your soul – no matter how much he tired you physically. While watching him move in the rhythm of the saxophone blasting through the shop, you couldn’t stop yourself from smiling upon watching him smile.

You would never say you’d be one to experience real love. But there was something about wanting to smile when you saw someone you cherished so much smiling as well. The fact he was happy made you happy, no matter how gray the day was. And if that wasn’t real love, you’d argue you didn’t know what love was, then.

“See? You are doin’ great!” Dante couldn’t spend time doing something with you without praising – it was something inherent in him. If you could smile only watching him smile, he could drown in happiness whenever he saw you blushing and letting yourself free around him. That was real love for Dante. “Ready for some push-ups?”

“Oh, c’mon! Now you’re definitely tryna kill me!” You had to laugh it off, although preparing yourself. Taking your shirt off, you threw it on the couch and cracked your fingers.

“Ha! You’re all talk, I know!” Starting a weird dance, you had to laugh back when he started talking again. “C’mon, don’t give up now! We have a long way to go and you’re doin’ amazing, hottie!”

“Not giving up, Jane Fonda! Let’s go!”

Of course, you would do push ups in your own human way, while Dante leaned his feet on his desk, hands on the floor, just warming up his muscles, as he would say.

You learned the hard way his official way of doing push ups was against a wall, feet high on the air – a push up in a handstand. During those days, you would just lean on his desk and read something while he exercised with metal music blasting through the shop – those were the days Dante took his exercising seriously and you just allowed him to do whatever his devilish stamina allowed and needed him to do to keep him in shape.

With your hands on your hips again, you were already sweaty, blushed and needing a little break to breath normally once more. Dante just got up and it seemed like he hadn’t even started.

“Need a break, gorgeous?”

“Yeah, a quick one…” You sighed while wiping some sweat off your forehead.

You didn’t expect, though, to be swept off your feet in your strong red devil’s arms.

“Dante…!”

“I love dancin’ with ya, babe!”

There was a golden laugh in his voice that made you giggle in response while holding tightly to his shoulder and hand. Dante intertwined his fingers with yours, spinning with you in the floor of the Devil May Cry – the song carrying you both in that lovely feeling of having each other.

Living with devils wasn’t always easy. Living with Dante, though, was always delightful.

Virgil and Remus cuddle during movie night, and then Remus’ tentacles come out looking for attention, unaware that Roman is still there and awake.

Dating Remus had its ups and downs, especially after Thomas accepted Virgil. There was some panic and some excitement, but there were quiet moments that made everything seem perfect in their messy world. 

It was movie night, and it was late. Virgil was the only one who was still awake, watching Scream while Remus was snuggled up to him in his lap. The only other side still in the common area was Roman, dozing on his throne of pillows. 

Virgil was content to lounge and let Remus use him as a pillow when no one was around and awake. He had an image he wanted to keep, even if it was crumbling for the wrong reasons. 

He took a moment to admire Remus' relaxed sleeping face as the credits rolled. He looked so innocent and youthful, and even princely. Virgil melted inside when Remus held him tighter and nuzzled into his belly. He truly loved this gremlin man. 

"When I see your smile, tears run down my face," he sang softly and ran his fingers through Remus' hair.

"I can't replace" 

He knew it was a sappy emo song that someone would probably make fun of him for, but he was basically alone and he was feeling pretty sappy. 

"And now that I'm strong, I have figured out, How this world is cold, and it breaks through my soul. And I know I'll find deep inside me, I can be the one," he continued softly. 

But before he could get to the chorus, four tentacles erupted from the duke's back and shot towards him. 

One immediately wrapped around his head while two curled around his chest. The last one hovered a foot away from his face, patiently waiting. 

Virgil sighed through his nose and coaxed the green appendage from his face and draped it over his hand. 

"Easy there, Tiger," he muttered and kissed the tip, making the tentacle go limp "I'll stop singing." The tentacle went rigid and squirmed toward his mouth again. 

"Okay, okay, Tiberius, I won't stop," he chuckled and ran his hand over the feisty arm. Tiberius shivered and wrapped around his shoulders.

"Commodus, Elagabalus," he said and ran his fingers over the tentacles hugging his chest, "Come up here a sec." 

Elagabalus unwound and popped up in front of him in a serpentine arch. Virgil grabbed it and brought it to his lips. 

"You're calm tonight, Laggy, just want cuddles?" he mumbled against the brained noodle. Laggy wiggled excitedly and shot back down to hug him again. 

"Commie? You want a kiss?" he asked and petted the other tentacle hugging him. Commie wiggled and held on tighter. 

"Alright, the offer is open," he said and eyed the last tentacle with a soft smile.

"C'mere, Nero, I didn't forget about you." 

Virgil giggled when Nero came up to his cheek and rubbed against it. 

"I'm happy to see you too," he said and left a little kiss on the top of it. He rubbed it gently, giving it plenty of opportunity to escape. Nero curled up and rubbed his upper lip.

"You know I can't pull off the mustache look," Virgil hummed fondly and held up his hand so Nero could wrap around it and snuggle his palm. 

Tiberius crept up his cheek and poked him. Virgil turned his head quickly and surprised it with another kiss. Tiberius jolted and poked his lips. It was singing time again.

"I will never let you fall, I'll stand up with you forever. I'll be there for you through it all. Even if saving you sends me to heaven," he sang softly and ran his free hand over the tentacles hugging him. 

Tiberius poked him again for more kisses before he could continue. He was happy to deliver.

"Seasons are changing and waves are crashing and stars are falling all for us," he kept going, nuzzling Tiberius and stroking Nero. He was too distracted to notice the pillow throne shifting. 

"Days grow longer and nights grow shorter, I can show you I'll be the one." 

Roman was wide awake, primarily stunned to hear Virgil singing without getting promoted. But then he noticed the position Virgil was in.

Remus was holding him down and his fiendish tentacles were accosting him! And he was singing—to soothe the beastly limbs of course! Roman was ready to intervene, but Virgil unwittingly stopped him. 

"'Cause you're my, you're my, my," Virgil sang, extending the last word before going on, "My true love, my whole heart. Please don't throw that away." 

Roman quietly rose just right to see Virgil's face. He was shocked to see four tentacles rubbing his cheeks, and even more surprised to see Virgil smiling and petting them like they were needy puppies.

"I love you too, you giant noodles" he giggled and nuzzled into the affection, "C'mon, you don't want to wake Remus, he needs his sleep." 

Roman lowered himself and closed his eyes, pretending to be asleep. He was intruding on a strange but tender moment. It was a moment he, of all sides, should have seen coming.

"I think I need to stop singing. You're getting too excited," Virgil muttered, "If you settle down, we can go to my room and I'll bring out the tarsi." 

The tentacles immediately flopped over his shoulders and rubbed his back. They wanted the toe beans! 

"And Roman," Virgil said, catching the prince off his guard, "Tell anyone about this and kiss your katana goodbye." 

Roman went rigid as Virgil sank out. He would face Anxiety’s wrath later.

Remus woke up in the wee hours of the morning. He was pleasantly surprised to find that he was in Virgil's room, snuggled up to him on top of the covers. 

He was feeling extra cuddly and he was happy to snuggle with the cuddliest side of them all! He was special enough to know that detail! 

But then he realized his tentacles were out and probably playing with Virgil's hair brushes. He tilted his head and grinned. 

Each tentacle arm was curled up around a spider leg, idly petting the fuzzy toe pads. Truly a welcoming texture, a pleasure for the tips! It kept his mind quieter and filled him with warmth. 

Remus giggled to himself and crawled up Virgil to see his face. 

"You woke up," Virgil hummed and hugged him to his chest. 

"Mhm, for now," Remus hummed and kissed his cheek, "I still need my sweet little good nightmare kisses!" 

"Sorry, Tiger took them all," Virgil jeered. 

"Aw, all of them?" Remus whined and pouted. Virgil chuckled and cupped his cheek. 

"Can you handle something bigger?" 

"You know I'm a size queen!" Remus teased and wiggled his eyebrows. 

Virgil stole forward and captured his lips, gently sucking his lower lip and nibbling on it as they slipped apart. And then he did it again. And again.

Remus absolutely melted and clung to Virgil's shirt. He absolutely loved his sweet and salty, ticking time bomb of a boyfriend.

Let Me Tell You The Story Of A Rainbow - Chapter 25

Mitile: Tycho Lake is pretty, but that's not the only place to go sightseeing in the South.

Figaro: Considering how much of it is undeveloped wilderness, there's all sorts of majestic mountains and oceans of wildflowers just waiting to be seen. How does escaping the bustle of the city and experiencing nature in all its unpolished glory sound to you?

Arthur: In fact, why don't the two of you go on a sightseeing tour through all five countries?

Cain: Sure, I can show you guys around my own top picks. I know where to find some great views and I can take you around to my favorite tailors and shoemakers and food stalls and gift stores. Uh, I'll probably end up adding a lot of destinations to your trip…

Riquet: This sounds so fun… I'd like to go with you! I want to see all sorts of sights I haven't had the chance to see before, too.

Rustica: My. Then may I accompany you as well as your personal musician? I'll play music that suits the sights you see.

Chloe: Omigosh, getting to hear Rustica's music while surrounded by nature's beauty! Now that's decadence!

Nero: Hey, if y'do that, then…

Bradley: It'll be more inspiration fer your drawings than you'll know what to do with, kiddo. It's just th' kinda person you are.

Luca: …!

The look on her face made it obvious they'd just hit the bullseye, and now everyone was looking at her. All the attention she was getting made Luca's face start to turn red.

Lennox: Whether you decide to draw or not… You can always change your mind in the future as many times as you want to. We wizards are blessed with long lives, after all.

Faust: The time we're granted is so long that spending it always in a rush would just be silly.

Murr: Such is what a wizard is!

Luca: …

Luca seemed a little more sure of herself, a little more secure in who she was as she took a breath and nodded.

Akira: (…"Time" means something so different to wizards compared to humans.)

But that's why things were going to be okay.

Akira: (Just like how we were able to experience Luca's own personal wonderland, Aslan and I and every other human in this world can experience the world that wizards inhabit, too.)

Although he and I were a lot closer than most others were, so the fact that we had that closeness felt a little extra special and wonderful to me… Suddenly, the loud clanging of massive bells, like the ones you'd find over offering boxes at Shinto shrines, reverberated through the air. I looked up and saw Roxy spinning and gliding through the air above our group.

One by one, Luca's friends, the magical beasts that had guarded the five pieces of her memory, popped up around us. They surrounded Luca, and I saw them press a brush and a set of paints into her hands.

Aslan: Alright, Luca. Are you ready for the last page?

Luca: …Yeah.

Luca nodded, and her six friends--Roxy included, of course--clustered around her. She smiled as she held her paintbrush up to the sky--she was a flower, in that moment, reaching for the sun. And that was the cue--the tension in a dancer's legs before the first steps, the inhalation before a song's first notes. Luca's performance began, and a vibrant, brilliant world was born from the brush gripped in her little hand. And it really was like a dance, like a song--I watched as the round little bird chased after the echoes of her painting on its stubby little wings.

Cain: Oh, hey! Every time that lil' guy flaps its wings, more fruit ripens on the trees, look!

Riquet: Oh my gosh! I've never seen fruit shaped like this before, and there's so many of them! They look so juicy and sweet…!

Next, Luca drew her brush over the surface of the lake, and the dolphin-y thingy leapt over and dove under the ripples, bringing a very welcome rain to the plants by the water's edge.

Heathcliff: I can see something sparkling in the rain. Is that…?

Nero: It's the lil' guy's treasures, ain't it?

Faust: Yes, I can see some trinkets in there I recognize. Look, the flowers the raindrops fall on are shining brighter now.

Chloe: Look, Count Tail is dancing to the sound of the rain!

Rustica: What a delightful performance. Though I do rather wish I had a pair of cymbals on me right now…

Rustica gazed up at the sky, despondent, when the big purple lizard wheeled through the heavens, followed by loud peals of thunder.

Rustica: Marvelous! What a gloriously powerful sound. I don't believe I've ever encountered music that made my heart dance like this before.

In between the rhythm of the thunder, Luca painted amber clouds on the sky, sitting astride the purple lizard's big back.

Bradley: Ooh. Those're some pretty tasty-lookin' clouds. They're shaped like fried chicken.

Owen: I'd eat them if they were sweet like cotton candy.

Mithra: Wouldn't they just taste like paint? You'd get a stomachache.

The little leaf spirit was scuttling around underfoot, its arms piled high with marbled fruit that had fallen from the trees.

Mitile: Wahh…! Every time it drops one of those fruits, it makes a puddle of water! They're so clear!

Figaro: Ahh…how pretty. Hey, Mitile, try taking a look into one of those puddles.

Lennox: It's like a portal to another location… I can see a beautiful forest that looks like it continues on forever.

It was an eternity that would only last for this one moment. I made a wish that it'd never end, but even that emotion, so powerful it overwhelmed everything else in my mind, was only temporary.

Arthur: How beautiful… I'm sure this is a sight we'll never have the fortune to see again. Don't you think, Lord Oz?

Oz: …Indeed.

Arthur's blue eyes sparkled with the pure innocence of a little kid as he looked up at Oz. One of Arthur's great loves was to find sights yet unseen in this world he had the good fortune to be born into. I watched as he took Oz's hand and pointed towards this and that and everywhere, and I felt myself break into a grin. Even the Northern wizards--Oz included, now that he was caught in Arthur's pace--kept their eyes on Luca's paintbrush and what lay beyond its brushstrokes. That's how much of a wonder it was: taking your eyes off it for even as much time as it took to blink was a waste.

Akira: My heart feels so full. I feel like I'm watching a magic show.

Rutile: Yeah. It's like, I wish we could keep watching forever…

Bradley: Well, y'got 'til she's done here.

Nero: Your heart's as black as soot, y'know that?

Bradley: Even the biggest production in the history of theatre's gotta have a curtain call at some point, don't it?

Nero: I mean, yeah, but…

Faust: I wouldn't say that "completion" is necessarily "the end". That which has a form will continue to persist. Obviously the book itself will, of course, but I'm talking about our memories of it, too.

Lennox: Yes. We'll probably never get to see this creative process ever again, but we can think back on it as many times as we like.

Cain: And don't forget that this picture book's about to be finished because we all worked to protect it.

Arthur: That's also something like a beginning, don't you think?

Riquet: A beginning…?

Akira: For those of us who will read this picture book, its "completion" is a "beginning".

Murr: It sure is! We can't read a book until it's finished. And thus, the world of this picture book begins anew!

Rustica: Put another way, this is but a prelude. The overture before the curtain rises.

Shylock: Indeed. It's like that most indulgent moment before dawn, spent waiting to see what beautiful colors the sun will dye the sky with.

Rutile: I'm sure this is…the happiest moment of all.

White: Snow.

Snow: What is it, White? You're looking uncommonly sentimental.

White: It's what we've been allowed to bear witness to here. I had thought that you and I had long since grown familiar with all the strange sights this world has to offer, and yet… Here is something that we would typically never get the chance to see. Something that… I would have never seen, had you not tied us together. That I can stand here at your side, your hand in mine, watching this…is all because of you.

Snow: …Ohoho. That didn't start now, dearest. I'm just as happy to have seen this sight with you at my side. So worry not. I will never let you go. Though…for every beginning, there must be an end.

White: The curtain has long since been ready to rise.

Luca's paintbrush stopped moving. The world was waiting for the moment when it would first get to see the light. And when Luca said her next words, it was with the solemnity of a prayer. Her inscription in the sky shone with a prismatic radiance. And as a rainbow exists as a refraction of light, unifying anew brings it back to brilliant, glaring white--and that was the color the world was wrapped in as the end of the rainbow rained down on us.

When I came to, I was in the still, silent exhibition hall again. My spiffy new storybook outfit was gone, too. I was back in my old clothes again. Based off the golden glow of sunset through the window, it didn't seem like much time had passed since we'd leapt into the picture book's pages. The creeping vines and odd plants and animals were nowhere to be seen; its pages were still open, but now all that was projected from its pages was a simple illusion.

Rutile: …Looks like you finished it safe and sound.

Luca nodded, just a bit, but when all my wizards looked over at her, she fixed her gaze on the floor again. Her silver hair, steeped in the colors of dusk, swayed in the air.

Luca: …I was only able to finish it because Roxy and everyone was there with me. I'm sorry I caused you all so much trouble. And…thank you.

Rutile: We should be the ones saying that. I'm so happy we were able to embark on such lovely adventures!

Arthur: What's most important is that you'll be able to put on your exhibit tomorrow safe and sound.

Aslan: Yes! Thank goodness, Luca.

Luca: Mhm. Thank you too, Roxy.

Luca said that as she glanced around and…all I could do was watch as her little smile fell and shattered across the floor.

Luca: …Roxy? Hey, Roxy…

Akira: Miss Luca…?

Rutile: …Don't tell me…

Luca's wide eyes were darting this way and that. She was lost, confused, disoriented…and desperately searching for her precious, fluffy friend with rainbow wings. She looked and she looked but in the end, all she could do was try her very hardest to keep herself from bursting into tears. Aslan put his hands on her tiny shoulders and pulled her towards him.

Aslan: Even if you can't see them, I know they're still right at your side.

Luca: …

Luca picked the picture book up off the floor and silently closed her eyes.

Luca: …Yeah. They'll always be with me…

She hugged the book to her chest very, very tightly. And when she did, I could've sworn I saw the flickering of rainbow scales around her… I'm sure it wasn't just a trick of the light.

The following day was the last day of the exhibition. My wizards were all in attendance, clad in outfits Chloe had made on a rush order, just for today.

Rustica: Thank you so much, Chloe. When we left the book's pages and our outfits went back to normal, I felt rather lonely.

Chloe: Ehehe. They were all so lovely that I couldn't get them out of my mind, so I made them. Everyone looks so good!

Rutile: Oh my goodness, Master Sage. Look how long that line is!

Akira: Looks like Luca's new book is really making a splash!

Arthur: Yes, it seems as though it's been the most popular exhibit of the day thus far.

Akira: Thank goodness! Gosh, for a while there, I really didn't know how things were going to end up… But Luca was able to finish it because she chose to face herself and the real world. She really put her all into it. And…the fact that she was able to get her heart back in one piece was thanks to all of you. Thank you so, so much for helping her!

Snow: Ohoho, but of course! We had Aslan make absolutely, positively sure the event organizer heard all about our contributions.

White: And we played our part as security for the event perfectly. The value of our stocks is going to go through the roof.

Snow & White: Yaaaay!

They cheerily held up one hand each towards me, and swept up in the mood, I high fived them both at the same time. Now that was a satisfying sound.
