ThunderCats #8 Recap and Review
Arg sorry this took forever, school got in the way + Marvel Rivals. I have bad hands so I have to pick and choose what the hell I'm going to use them for daily. I am also changing the structure of these and will be leaving my thoughts at the end of the recap. Anyway, onto #8!
Spoiler Free Review: Claudus' Pontius Pilate era
Spoilers under the cut!!
Recap
A Tygra centered issue just like I suspected. The story opens up with the head architect and scientist of the ThunderCats hanging upside down on the skeleton of what will become Cats Lair. Panthero chides him from abandoning his bed rest, but Tygra wont budge as he is trying to move the Treasures of Thundera into their new base.
The Treasures of Thundera is that armory via a portal that Snarf brought to the Cats attention back in issue 2 or 3. As they go to place it Tygra gets sucked into it and pops out on the other side, ending up next to Old King Claudus.
Tygra realizes the portal transported him back to Thundera months before the planet was destroyed. He reminisces about his friendship with the king while Claudus tells Snarf about his new job protecting this place.
While Claudus talks to Snarf, telling the creature he will remain with the Treasures until called upon by Lion-O, he is attacked by an individual hooded in a cloak that resembles the head of Cats Lair. As they battle the figure incapacitates Snarf with magic and strikes down the king, monologuing on how he is going to teach Claudus how to fear. At this point Tygra interferes.
The cloaked figure continues to spar with both words and his halberd, claiming he knows Tygra. Apparently the halberd is supposed to do something but it does jack shit and the figure yeets that shit. His tantrum is interupted by Jaga.
Jaga does not attack, in fact he doesn't seem to acknowledge the trio mid-tussle. He walks in, leading a mass of Mu'Tant prisoners from the Great War that are being escorted through the hall of Treasures into another portal. Soldiers, women, children, being lead to somewhere. This doesn't surprise Claudus as the king solemnly watches. This does surprise Tygra, who first thought the mass of prisoners to be Thunderian refugees. The fight continues after the last guard goes through the portal.
The figure continues to wail into Claudus and incapacitates Tygra with mental magic, the same way he did Snarf. Speaking about how the future will be "a tragedy" as he disappears into another portal.
We cut to Mumm-Ra, who is trying to locate they Eye of Thundera with magic but gets zapped with red energy. He says he has felt this power before, but its changed and "more".
Cutting back to Tygra, Claudus and Snarf, the king remarks on how Tygra is much older than he remembers and asks if their plan to escape to Third Earth had worked. Tygra tells him that they are there, not without loss and then questions Claudus on what he saw with the prisoners. Claudus explains that the prisoner transport was one of mercy, as members of the Council wanted to execute them to deter more attacks after the Great War but the king could not bring himself to commit that act. Instead he developed a ruse, the Mu'Tants would belive that the prisoners had been killed but in reality they were transported via the Hall in their own words quote:
"...a world which we knew could sustain them, while removing the imminent threat to our home. Once we became aware that Thundera would be destroyed, Third Earth became our lifeline."
Tygra is baffled to why Claudus would have considered escaping to a planet purposefully filled with their enemies was a good one, but tries to question Claudus on their mysterious cat attacker. The king does not know about the cloaked figure, but asks Tygra to keep all that's transpired and has been told to him to himself before sending Tygra back through a portal.
On Third Earth, Snarf its guarding the entrance to the Tresures and doesn't permit the twins or Lion-O from entering. Tygra barrels through the portal door and crashes into the unsuspecting Lord, nocking them both off the scaffolding. Lion-O is able to catch hold of the side but Tygra has to be swept up by Panthero. He can't tell them what he and Claudus talked about, but he can tell them when the mysterious Cats Lair clad figure showed him while attacking him with magic. The Mu'Tants have arrived at the skeleton of Cats Lair.
Review
So far the most interesting issue yet, so many questions have popped up. The Treasures seams to exists in a place outside of time where actions that happened months ago in this space can be seen in the future. Basically Book of Omens but without the Book? Or an extension of it? Then Claudus comes out of left field with the war crime committee. God I love morally ambiguous Claudus, 2011 did wonders with that. The irony of Third Earth becoming Thundera's sanctuary after being its dumping ground is so intriguing and I can't wait to see the native denizens of Third Earth reacting to the Cats. No doubt they will recognize that Cats are the ones who brought this invading force onto their planet. The Warrior Women especially will most likely react negatively. As this review is written after I have read ThunderCats: Apex #1 I know who the cloaked guy is and... not what I was originally expecting. When I first read this issue I was entertaining the idea this was going to be Grune with a nice new design. Alas.

So, when picking up the new Transformers, I saw that Dynamite has released a new Thundercats comic! Now, the original show was before my time and Thundercats Roar just really isn't my speed, so my main exposure to the franchise is the short-lived 2011 series.
So what did I think of issue #1?
Hm.
Basic background: Thundera was ruined, so the cats left, escaping the Mu-tants, and have landed on Earth 3.
I don't have too much to say about most of the characters as we haven't gotten much time with them. Tygra having a handlebar mustache threw me off at first, but I warmed up to it a little later on.
Then there's Lion-O... Hm. Some curious choices were made... They're going to need to convince me that these were good choices. Currently? Don't like the guy much at all. Like, I understand that he's going through A Lot(tm) right now, however, we aren't given any moments to actually sympathize with him.
Also, I have no idea what the time frame is here. It looks like they've been cruising amongst the stars for at least a decade, but Slithe mentions it's only been months?
Personally? The story is feeling rushed. We didn't need to get hints of Mumm-ra just yet. We didn't need to get into an involved fight with the Mu-tants just yet. Personally, I think the Mu-tants shouldn't have shown up until the last page or two. Like, show us the group exploring and getting used to this new land, show us Lion-O trying to behave like he had before only to realize that his new circumstances won't allow him that anymore and give us some actual distress, then give us some good moments of dread when the Mu-tants show up and the crew realizes how short-lived this time of peace was.
I don't know where the writer is going with this. This is only issue 1, after all. However, with what we've gotten so far, I don't currently feel like this was the best first chapter.

Analysis of the Contents of Quill’s backpack
One of the things I’d like to point out is that Peter Quill’s backpack contains a Panthro action figure, which is not only fitting since Thundercats aired from 1985-88 (perfectly fitting in the age bracket for Peter to have seen it from when he was 5-8), but the Thundercats themselves were Alien man-cats; when the scene where Gamora looks through Quill’s backpack transpires the Guardians are on Counter-Earth, which not only sounds a bit like Third Earth but is populated by sapient humanoid animals. Hell, the 2011 iteration of ThunderCats had plans to reveal that it was Mumm-Ra who created the Animals by mixing animal and human DNA in a series of experiments similar to what the High Evolutionary was doing (had the series not been canceled).  What I’m trying to say is that James Gunn is a genius (but we already knew that)

I spotted a Yo-kai Watch reference in the wild. And by "in the wild" I mean a 2021 Netflix adult animated series meant as a homage to the late 80s/early 90s.
Tumblr media
Saturday Morning All Star Hits, also known as S.M.A.S.H. (can't believe nobody ever did that), presents every episode as the vhs recordings of an early 90s cartoon block, in wich two twin brothers host different cartoons parodying those from the time like "Denver The Last Dinosaur", "Carebears" and "Thundercats", among others. As you can probably imagine by me calling the series "adult" at the begining, said cartoons turn out to be way darker than their inspirations (alcohol, drugs, depression, blood), and different bad things start to happen behind the scenes and even on-stage as the tension between the host twins gets worse.
Spoilers I guess.
Tumblr media
The last episode hints at the passage to the late 90s/early 2000, with one of the new cartoons debuting, Slingers, being a parody of the "collect them all" kind of toy commercial cartoons from that time. I bet you already guessed "Pokemon", but it actually draws more heavily from "The Legend of the Hawaiian Slammers" and.... and...
Tumblr media
The protagonist is CLEARLY supposed to be Nate Adams aka Amano Keita from Yo-kai Watch, specifically his design from the third game.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And it's weird. I suppose from the makers' point of view Pokemon and Yo-kai Watch are part of the same trend, and don't get me wrong, they are both monster collecting games... but the episode is clearly referencing the "pokemania" from the late 90s/early 2000s, while Yo-kai Watch's release and peak at popularity are synonimous with the 2010s.
Then again I'm probably among the very few who would notice let alone care. Still cool to find a YW reference when I was less expecting it. The series will probably be a delight for those nostalgic for that era of popular culture too. Watch the episodes during actual saturday mornings for maximun inmersion.

Ok I know I haven’t done any of the ThunderCats recap and reviews that I promised to do, but Apex…. I wasn’t excited and I’m glad my lack of enthusiasm was correct. My expectations for the SilverHawks comics has just plummeted. Spoilers under the cut
He’s lion-o from the “bad future”…. Oooh brother this guy STINKS
Until he revealed who he was I was hooked, thinking he was a new version of Grune the Destroyer but noooo they had to make reference to red liono RED LIONO THE THING THAT I MADE AN OC IN RESPONSE OF BECAUSE I HATE HOW MOST EVIL CLONES ARE HANDLED
This is obvi just my bias against this, but his design under the cloak sucks, this idea sucks, if you like him good for you but I’m only reading this so I’m not confused when a character/concept are introduced here and referenced in the main run.

79. Death Master II: The Lord Of Death
This one has an appropriately awesome title sequence, showing the Death Master himself ("Alonzo" to our friends here) wielding his giant scythe atop a volcano with a storm spiraling above him!
john_brown: this looks like the kind of video game that you have painted on your van
"Can you hear the soundtrack too because its really good, it's like Dragonstorm or one of those fantasy-metal bands.. Oh maybe we'll find out what happened to his parents? Remember they were dead and he couldn't bring them back? Spoilers."
ButterflyDefect: Right, you could only reverse deaths YOU caused, it turned out
The game begins with a scrolling text:
YOUR REIGN AS DEATH MASTER WAS A REIGN OF PEACE.
HAVING SEEN SO MUCH DESPAIR ON YOUR WAY TO THIS THRONE, YOU BROUGHT KINDNESS AND WARMTH THAT NO FALLEN SOUL HAD EVER ENCOUNTERED BEFORE.
YET CRUELTY STILL LIVES, MAKING DIRE PLANS OF ITS OWN...
DueyDecimal: Still "You", huh? We never learn Alonzo's real name?ButterflyDefect: It's kind of nice the DEATH MASTER is actually a good guy for a change aroseahorseboy flings Butterfly into a giant blender hey i'm nice but we gotta have refreshments, y'know
DueyDecimal: BTW, isn't "Death Master 2: The Lord Of Death" sort of like "Sonic The Hedgehog 2: A Hedgehog Named Sonic"?
"Maybe the Master and the Lord are two different Death guys? It's got to be a pretty big jobs, maybe we're just like the regional manager now"
The text crawl fades away, to the same image from the title screen... and then suddenly Alonzo is kicked off his high perch, and someone in black and maroon robes grabs the scythe from his hand as he tumbles. "Now I am The Death Master!" it shouts, in a speech bubble.
"Oh fuckbuckets, that was was quick! HEY, that's, you gotta boss fight me for that, you dweeb!"
pigbarrel: oh. so it's more of a death usurper HNV: I never thought of the semantics, but 'master' does seem to be a higher rank than 'lord', to me
The game proper begins with Alonzo hitting the ground running! You're unarmed to start with, but this game gives you the power to take weapons from armed enemies and power them up by defeating enemies in combos. A tiny spear that Bea appropriates from a squat little goblin soon grows into a massive lance that can puncture things from across the screen!
"HWAAA!! Gimme that mace, I wanna see what that turns into next!" It's a good fit for the first boss she encounters too, a giant skeletal turtle! Eventually she manages to flip it on its back and smash its underside! "I AM BEATRIX, THE DEATH MISTRESS! THE "X" IS FOR THE LITTLE Xs YOU'RE GONNA HAVE ON YOUR EYES FROM.. from being dead."
john_brown: the way your weapons grow reminds me of the sword of omens from thundercats DueyDecimal: ...Am I the only one who sees the Freudian imagery there? ButterflyDefect: War is a long list of big stabbing, thrusting things Syrupentine: hehehehehehehehe.... peenz0rs pigbarrel: this is crime
The second stage is a ruined village, with frightened townspeople being tormented by the animal-headed monsters that seem to work for your enemy now. Surprisingly, halfway through the stage you come to something like a church, and there's a strange moment: the action all freezes, and suddenly there's a wedding happening, and you're the groom!
HNV: ...okay waht
"Oh is this.. Are we.. are we doing a flashback?? Is that what this is?? Uggh this is going to be sad isn't it!"
DueyDecimal: Of COURSE the sequel is actually a prequel!!
As the bride and groom come close to kiss, suddenly the lights go out-- and when they come back on, the groom is standing bloodied in a pile of victims, including both pairs of parents! And there's the old Death Master from the original game, exiting out the back door.
Syrupentine: So he doesn't remember who killed his parents OR girlfriend... OR his girlfriend's parents? Llord_Kuruku: now that's just overkill
"Oh no.. no no NO!! Who woulda done this?! Why?? Why turn this blessed event into Super Grooms n' Ghosts??"
Then it's back to the game, and chopping and hacking through the village and the monsters; the monsters seem more focused now, and will turn away from the villagers to attack Alonzo!
HNV: I think everyone had a flashback, now all the monsters recognize you!
"So my family was murdered by the original DM, everyone blames Al because nobody trust the guy with a mustache, whatever you do, but then who.."
pigbarrel: maybe death masters have families too?? so its like bowser jr. come to avenge his father john_brown: i wonder if it's a translation error that they don't just say 'grim reaper' or if this is supposed to be something different?
Finally comes the stage boss-- and of all places for this boss to attack you, it's right in front of your old house, the very place you came to at the end of the last game! At least it's a cool boss-- a roaring "hangman's tree" that chomps with its gnashing knothole mouth and swings dead bodies on nooses like nunchaku!
"Stupid- Hgarrrgh, none of my weapons are working! This is why I don't go outside, trees are always doing this!!"
Once she knocks down one of the bodies from the tree and claims its axe, however, the tide of battle turns in her favor!
HNV: Axes and trees are natural enemies! ButterflyDefect: I, too, shall die clutching my axe in my hand. After smiting my final foes with my crushing solo
With a few heavy blows, the tree teeters, falls, and becomes a stump! Then there's another flashback... the stump becomes a young sapling, and the Death Master becomes a young Alonzo, shovel in hand, standing over the graves that were revealed at the end of the previous game.
Syrupentine: why do you do this to us again, game :___;
"It's powered by our emotional suffering" Bea tries to press start but of course it's an unskippable cutscene! "And so from that day on.. he decided.. he really hated skeletons. OH and also probably vengeance."
Alonzo slowly skulks away, shovel in hand, head hung... And then a shadowy figure appears from behind the tombstones – the same figure that threw him off the mountain at the beginning!
Syrupentine: ooooh, intrigue
to be continued

Of the characters you write for, which is your favorite? Has that choice been swayed at all by your followers/readers’ reactions to certain ones?
Depending on where I am in my life, I feel like a different character dominates that phase. It's hard to say favorite, absolute favorite, though when pressed I tend to still default to Glorfindel for Tolkien fandom and Panthro for ThunderCats and call it a day. (Pokemon is easy, Rocketshipper for Life, they cannot be separated.)
With ThunderCats, I know that I latched onto Cheetara immediately. Cheetahs were my favorite animal, and there are many things about Cheetara I can relate to. But the more I watched, rewatched, obsessed over, and delved into ThunderCats, I found myself making the rounds to Tygra, and Alluro, and coming around to Panthro in the midst of it, so that by the time I was in college, I created my first website (Panthro's Pad). It was good times. The biggest thing that locked that in -- the ancient email RP for ThunderCats, and both Cheetara and Tygra were taken, but somehow Panthro was not (I also played Snarfer in that RP game - Snarfer, the Wesley Crusher of ThunderCats.)
Now that we're past the opening act, on to Tolkien.
I don't think reader or follower reactions have swayed me in a big picture way, but individuals certainly have given me unknown nudges. Art has swayed me -- if you want a thing to happen, especially in Bunniverse, send me some art. Mei, Siesta, SayAye, TICS, and others who provided visual nudges knew what my kryptonite is.
My introduction was The Hobbit; I liked Gollum (bet you didn't expect that!) and Thranduil. I also knew of Glorfindel prior to that, but did not actually find out 'who is that exactly?' until getting to Lord of the Rings. From the Bakshi film, I liked Elrond. From the Rankin & Bass (which -- spoiler -- I don't think I would have started to root in this fandom without that, the fact that the animation style of those films and ThunderCats are the same production company -- that made a big impact for me) I liked... the orcs! But also, Smaug. And, still Thranduil.
Do you know how fucking confused I was, sitting in the theatre, opening night, to watch PJ's Fellowship, and a white Legolas, not a green Legolas, appears on screen? That was my WTF? moment.
And then, enter Haldir.
That line, "The Dwarf breathes so loud..."?
That was my ringtone on my flip phone for a while.
Anyhow.
Back when Yahoo Groups were a thing, and riffing was a thing (riffing is writing little narratives with the authors interacting with their characters/muses), I proclaimed that my muses at that time consisted of Haldir, Glorfindel, Erestor, and Thranduil. Just about everything had one of them somewhere in the story.
Oh, and Celeborn, but that's just because I found Marton Csokas extremely attractive. That's right, while my contemporaries wanted to be princesses of Mirkwood, I was finding ways to be the homewrecker of Lothlorien.
I found that I slowly shifted from that line-up when I moved from apartment-land to house-ville. In the first month of moving, I was in two car accidents -- one terrible that totaled my car GLRFNDL, and one just frightening and involving a deer and mauling GLRFNDL the second not even a month after the first.
I went from being "the" author to being...lonely -- since you're anon and I can't know if you know this, in 2006 I had MCed the Tolkien Track of Dragon*Con. I had around 750 posted stories at that point, including a massive WIP about Gondolin at a time when one didn't find much about Gondolin, that was very read (random people encountering me and telling me they read it level; combined reads on that thing across multiple sites are at a seven digit figure, very much 'how is this my life?' headspace of people wanting things signed or sending me gifts (I have a collection of 70 purple stuffed bunnies from fans, and also, many people during those days would send me gift cards for cheesecake or in one instance, I was FEDEXed an actual cheesecake -- you haven't lived until you have to pick up a cheesecake and sign for it with your fandom name and prove you are your fandom name to the people at FEDEX).
But I had the accidents. I still have PTSD from the first one -- to this day, I can't drive a vehicle that is low to the ground. SUV, Truck - fine. This has been sad news for ERESTOR, a cozy station wagon I own, but can't drive anymore. And I was injured. My leg was so swollen that I couldn't wear pants for several weeks, and my knee had been slammed into the console so stairs were not a good option. I had a bruise the shape of the seat belt that stuck around many weeks (though, better than the alternative! always buckle up!). There were cuts in many places on top of my head. The most noticeable thing was the gash that ran from just beside my eye down my cheek all the way to my chin. I am very fortunate I had a doctor who was amazing in treating me that I don't have a scar that is seen. My neck and back have not been the same since; air travel since then has ceased because I don't know if I can sit through the flights.
My morale was low; I wasn't the super fun person I had been prior to the first accident. I couldn't sit and type things out for lengthy periods as I once had; I had to rely on voice chats or speech-to-text (which sucked a lot at that time). There were nights I got home from work and I just sat in the chair in the living room until I fell asleep because I was too tired to do anything else.
And most people in fandom didn't want to just sit in a call that was mostly silent, or talk about things other than fandom, or sit and watch a TV show with me so that I didn't feel alone.
But Britt did, and Jules did, and they kept me around these parts, and they got me sidetracked into something else.
OCs.
(Also, Jules and I RPed a massive all the Rivendell characters plus Ereinion thing, I don't know if we'll ever find everything we did, but what we did do was fun, and also, therapeutic. Britt introduced me to LOTRO, and I wouldn't have Eledu -- and OC Britt created and then slowly was gifted over to me --without the bad things that happened. I wouldn't have Bainith, Baynor, Fauneth, and so many other lovely characters to round out Middle-earth.)
This was also a darker period of writing. Rainbow in the Dark and Unforgivable were written at that time; Morgoth crept into my bunny hutch. Sauron was suddenly there, terrorizing my muses. Eventually, I needed a way to pull myself out of the self-imposed Void I was in.
And I remembered Fingon.
Near the end of the apartment-land time, I had been working through some stories (most notably Citius Altius Fortius) with Fingon. My own sibling family unit is four sibs -- the second one is the tallest one, very tall, very business, very fierce; third is a girl, and one who at 18 left the state for adventure elsewhere in the world. There were a lot of parallels, and I revisited what I had been doing, and started to write things reflective of my own experiences into things for that sibling group, but especially Fingon (I am the oldest). I went on a sort of 'what would Fingon do' quest. I remember just, driving places I'd never been before, on a Saturday, abruptly, no prior plan, or doing things like, wow, that a strange giant insect crawling around, guess I'll just scoop it up in my hands and take it back to nature (not a thing I'd have done before, that's for damned sure). But I wrote some of it into what I called The Private Reserve, posting it in places that were somewhat need to know, invite only to find. I started to think, I needed to stop being autobiographical and start twisting in fiction, so now, writings about Fingon are less obvious what is based on truths and what is made up, because then I felt I could put those stories out there. J helped with that, too -- making the art of Glorfindel, Erestor, and Fingon that made me decide that Erestor didn't have to choose - why not both?
Writing collaboratively also meant that Fingon's stories leaned further into fiction, and Gildor and Maedhros, characters I once personally did not like, got a second chance and now were no longer the secret villains, but beloved characters to write about.
Asfaloth. I've always enjoyed writing Asfaloth as more than a horse, as THE horse, as the secret identity of Nahar, and with the ability to talk (but unlike Huan, talking far more than three times).
Then -- pandemic. Isolation. Things happen in cycles. I had been once again in that strange place of running into people who I didn't really know telling me they'd read all my fics, going to regional conventions and getting white glove treatment, etc. And then -- there were no conventions, no gatherings, similar to my experiences after the car accidents.
This time, though, while everyone else was locked in at home, I was out. I ended up redeployed on a special project, running 3D printers, trying to develop a version of a print on demand mask that would be as effective as an N95 (we hoped for one; we managed four; we were shut down because there was a fear that legally someone might sue if they used one of them and still got covid -- they are flexible and comfortable and breathable and when I wore them I never got covid, as I was testing constantly, but I digress). I had to keep myself occupied, in scenarios where either I was out in a dystopic world all by myself or with one other person who was on the project. I kept papers in my car to prove it was okay for me to be outside. It was a different time.
The prior year, I'd written a choose your own adventure story about Finrod Felagund called Werewelves. It was written mostly while I was outside, as my mother-in-law stayed with us twice; once when her lease for an apartment she had lived in for 33 years wasn't renewed and again when her new apartment caught fire (on my birthday, and I was the one who went over and saved her and her cat - my other origin point for PTSD - fire is not my friend). And I thought a lot about that story, and suddenly, a character I used mainly as a footnote in stories about Galadriel or Fingon was very very present.
My current vehicle is FINROD. That's how present this muse has been.
And, because things do come full circle at times, Thranduil (not green anymore, I've finally accepted non-green Thranduil for some things) is all up in all the writing business, too, and he brought the wife, so Avisiel is around about.
So that is where I am currently at, as I sit beneath a banner for the House of the Golden Flower writing this. Who knows what will happen next?
...but I did have a dream about Maeglin last night...
