It's Fine Press Friday!

Among the several Chicago fine presses that came out to the Arts and Crafts movement was the Blue Sky Press, which ran from 1899 to 1906. Design, printing and business operations were undertaken by Alfred G. Langworthy, while art and literature were the purview of Thomas Wood Stevens and, until 1902, Alden Charles Noble. In his notable survey of the field, The Private Press (1983), Roderick Cave notes that:

In some respects the Blue Sky books reflect the work put out by the aesthetic publishers like the Bodley Head no less than Kelmscott work. Although undoubtedly derivative, their design was not slavish in its following a particular style, and the books they published remain charming examples of the taste of the period.

How Jaques Came into the Forest of Arden was published in 1901 by Blue Sky in a limited edition of 700 copies numbered and initialed by Langworthy. The text is by American author and journalist Elia W. Peattie (1862-1935), with illustrations by American illustrator and cartoonist Walter J. Enright (1879-1969). The selection this kind of text and illustration was characteristic of Blue Sky productions. Again, Roderick Cave:

[The] press produced competent if not especially distinguished work by contemporary writers as well as a number of standard texts, at a time when so many private printers' imagination stretched no further than another version of Sonnets from the Portuguese.

The book was printed on Van Gelder handmade paper with initials by American artist Harry Everett Townsend (1879-1941), hand-illuminated by Elia Peattie's sister Barbara Peattie.

The Last Superheroes/What Happened To The Real Steven Boxleitner Lore Update

I am making some changes to my oc backgrounds for these aus (spoilers for @melodythebunny and her New Neighbor's au story) Trigger Warning: Heavy and Dark topics. Read at your own risk. So Maddrix is named Matthew Dunner -he has no ties with his bio family -his dad is a deadbeat that left when he was very young. -he used to be the superhero partner to his uncle (Captain Valiant) but after a violent outburst was outed to the public and kicked out by his uncle and mother around 17. This created his hatred for heroes which what lead to the massacre. -Maddrix had unresolved anger issues and violent behaviors that neither his uncle nor mother bothered to fix with therapy. Maddrix didn't try to resolve them himself after he was kicked out, he just rather channeled it to his villainy and battles as well as his hatred towards heroes. -he soon met a young Professor Carl Woods when they were both in their mid to late 20s. It was love at first sight for the men. -Carl was the one who proposed to Maddrix on a date with specially designed flowers that shot out glowing spores which spelled "Will You Marry Me?" (Eris's idea for the proposal). -All of their children are clones created by Carl mixing their DNA together. Their children are Victor, Emily, and Gene Woods. (Maddrix took Carl's last name.) -Maddrix made sure his uncle couldn't continue in the hero business after ripping an arm off the man. -Maddrix was a pretty decent dad. He loved his kids. He loved his husband. He tried to be involved in the kids lives as much as he could. Gene was of course his favorite out of the kids. Instead of letting them choose their own paths, Maddrix put particular focus on Gene and his potential for villainy. He wanted Gene to become a powerful villain like himself. Maddrix was fair with his training towards Gene. He didn't push Gene into something the boy wasn't prepared for. Maddrix found Carl cute when he got angry and huffy. Compared to Carl, Maddrix was calm and restrained when it came to driving. Carl had road rage issues and could swear like a sailor sometimes. Maddrix did swear, but he could control it though. -Maddrix told Carl his family was to be considered dead and didn't want him or the kids interacting with them. He didn't go to either his uncle's or mother's funeral. -Maddrix and his family did have a happy life...that is why the massacre was so tragic and soul crushing for Maddrix's family when it happened. -Maddrix is bisexual as is Gene and Emily. Victor is Pansexual. Carl is Gay. Carl Woods -Professor Carl Woods was a well known geneticist and inventor before he was kidnapped when Gene was about 20. -Due to the time period Carl grew up in, he had no idea of his own sexuality until his first partner, a female, helped to bluntly point it out for him. They broke things off amicably and remained good platonic friends until his kidnapping. -Carl is the second youngest son in his family -His father, Jeremy Woods, married Jessica Boxleitner who had a son from her previous marriage. Her son's name is Thomas Boxleitner. Jeremy was a good father to both Thomas and Carl. These step brothers got along pretty well and Carl still kept in contact with Thomas after Jeremy had remarried when Jessica passed away from health issues. (Thomas was 22 when it happened, Carl was about 14 0r 15.) Jeremy then remarried to Alice Baxter. She gave birth to two children who were Carl's half siblings. The first born was a girl named Caroline Baxter. The second was a son named Nathan Baxter or Nate for short. The parents' last name was Woods-Baxter. Jeremy and Alice sadly divorced out of grief when Nate "died" under mysterious circumstances. He was a stage hand on a puppet show called "Welcome Home" 😈. Caroline tried to find evidence about what really happened to her brother but she couldn't find anything. Carl tried to help her as much as he could but could find no scientific reason. So the conclusion I've come to is... in my own fanfic writing projects, I sometimes have works that I know are very good and are received well. And there are some that I know just stink, and the lower interaction reflects it. It's pretty comforting to know that for professional writers, the same thing is true.

Jane Espenson, for instance, beloved by Spuffies everywhere for being our man on the inside, ALSO co-wrote "Gingerbread," my least favorite ep ever.

Douglas Petrie is, in my opinion, absolutely an undercover Spuffy, or at least understood the assignment well enough to fake it. And I love him for being the first to write Wesley, for breaking Bangel up one of the times in S3, for writing "Fool for Love," for strengthening Spike's character in every ep that included him.

And David Fury... look, I know he gets a lot of flack, but I think he doesn't actually hate Spike as much as it seems. Looking at his list of episodes and the messages I know to be in them, I think he's just VERY pro-soul, and can't wrap his head around a vampire being good without one. But once Spike does get his soul... well, we need look no further than "Showtime."

But really, let's all bow down to Rebecca Rand Kirshner. For "Out of My Mind." For "Tabula Rasa." For "Help." For "Touched." For some of the sweetest Spuffy moments in all her other eps.

Thoughts: So, uh, I read a lot of books this month. I leaned into beating my total from last year since I was close and read a lot of short reads, graphic novels, and the children's books I was giving for gifts.

There were some good reads this month, including two new canine narrators that I adore: Fox 8 and Snuff from A Night in the Lonesome October (which really should be a big tumblr book as it has Jack the Ripper, Dracula, the Wolf Man, a witch, a clergyman, a druid, Victor Frankenstein, Sherlock Holmes, a Rasputin-coded mad monk, and occultists along with their familiars scheming over the fate of the world).

What's next?

Well, I have to make the bracket itself. As you can see, there's a bit more cats than I was intending to have, which means that certain polls in round 1 will have more than just two options. I can already tell you that a lot of the cats from the same fandoms are going to be eliminated in round one. That's why I kept them in. I'm planning on making up the first round match ups based heavily on the similarities between cats and the fandoms they're from. ALSO as you've probably noticed, some cats come in a bundle. That's because they're a family. I'm not doing this to Kitty Softpaws and Puss (at least YET), because even though they also get married in the end, there's a huge gap in their submission numbers. If you're wondering, how big, you may want to know that up to Tigger from Winnie the Pooh (that is, almost the entire first pic) are the cats that got 2+ submissions, in their order of popularity.

Next step - brackets!!! I want to do this well and I hope I don't underestimate certain fandoms!!!

The Last Superheroes/What Happened To The Real Steven Boxleitner Lore Update - Part 2

-Carl never found love again after what Maddrix had done. He was horrified and shocked. He hated his actions so badly, but try as he could, Carl could never fully hate Maddrix. Poor Carl's heart was never the same after that. -After he was kidnapped by people who worked for the B.E.A.W labs (melody's facility where her oc Carrie was kidnapped). He was forced to work and punished for misbehavior by his tormenters and kidnappers. He was sad at the though to never see or know where his children were, but he was happy the people at the facility had no clue either. Steven Boxlietner -In this au Steven is Carl's nephew. His dad Thomas Boxleitner had him and his sister Jessica who was named after her mother. -Steven and his family lived in Northic City most of their lives which was far away from Hope City (now Fair City). -he was only able to interact with Gene a few times before he interned for his uncle in Northic University. -he reunited with Gene there. -Gene was staying with Carl who moved to Northic City after the massacre Maddrix caused. Gene wanted to stay out of public eye long enough so people would forget about him being Maddrix's son. -Carl wanted to keep Gene so he was a bit protective over him, even with his nephew, but calmed down when he saw how happy Gene was again with interacting with his cousin and new best friend. (Rebecca Fuller being his old one, aka Stargirl) -Victor and Emily were old enough to be out of the house by the time Carl moved to Northic. They kept in contact with their dad and brother though. -Somehow the B.E.A.W labs people found out about Gene's adaptation abilities. They tried to buy Gene from Carl but he refused. They kidnapped Carl and tried to get at Gene, Steven tried to help his friend escape but was shot. Gene escaped, believing his friend to be dead with no idea what happened to his father. Steven survived his gunshot wound and was taken along with Carl where he was too forced to work in deplorable conditions under his captors. He and his uncle were kept together fortunately. Thomas Boxleitner -Thomas and his family thought with sadness and horror for a while that Carl, Gene, and Steven had died in an accidental lab explosion. (It wasn't an accident but created during the scuffle.) -Victor and Emily weren't around when it happened with Emily still in University and Victor working for a group called The Agency under Margret Fuller (Rebecca's aunt). The Agency was a group that worked to stop the monsters of the world even by death. -Victor was the one who began to hear reports of a Professor Steven Boxleitner living in Fair City. He thought it was his cousin Steven but was shocked and joyful none the less when it was his brother Gene who was hiding under Steven's name from the facility. -Margret was old friends with Carl before the Massacre. She worked with Thomas to help develop cover identities allowing Emily and Victor to claim his last name. Thomas let Gene keep his son's name since he knew Steven would want Gene to be safe. -Thomas was broken hearted to hear how his son was "confirmed dead" by Gene and that is brother is still missing somewhere. It's not Gene's fault though, Gene assumed as well Steven had died from the gunshot. They left the obituary for their son as is so not to arouse suspicion. -Sadly a rift has formed between Thomas' family and Carl's children. Thomas did not react well when Gene became Dr. Two Brains and a villain. He yelled at Gene and told him he was ruining the reputation of his deceased son's name and making a mockery of Carl's work. He also emotionally yelled at Gene that he was becoming like what Maddrix wanted him to be. Yeah....Gene got distraught over the words, Victor and Emily got pissed. Margret had to step in to prevent blood being spilled. Thomas still let the siblings have their cover identities, but now neither sides want to do anything with the other. There are times when Thomas did feel regret for his words, but stubbornness and pride and grief prevents both sides from talking things out as well as any apologies that need to be said.
