L:  *walks off to the left* If Aiber dies in the next 24 hours, Light is Kira.

April 7, 2005: Aiber (real name: Thierry Morello) is killed by the power of the Death Note.

(text in official English release) Light: So far, neither of us has brought up the Kira case. It would be weird to talk about it when we don't even know each other. As if we'd really "get to know each other" by playing tennis. This is just a pretext for us to say "now we're friends."

Death note au (dimension travel) where the original L and Musical L who were suppose to be dead, at their respective universes, wakes up to an alternate reality where everything is the same yet slightly different. If only their counter parts also had the same appearance, it would've been easier for them to navigate this reality.

Musical L wakes up in the abandoned warehouse that is both familiar yet different. But he doesn't mind that because he feels disoriented after he shot himself (isn't he suppose to be dead?). He could still remember the way his heart was beating, the tremor in his hands as it shooks in (was it fear?) Trying to gain control. Yet it didn't change (did he have any control in his actions?) As it steadily turns the gun to his head. His voice, though nonchalant, didn't waver as he spoke his last words. And the last thing he saw was the ceiling of the warehouse- similar to what he is looking at right now. He sits up, and feels a puddle (his blood?) In his fingers and slowly he stands up.

Where is he? He didn't know. Although the warehouse looked similar it somehow looked- older. He reaches for his phone and dials a number. After a few rings, it didn't pick up. A heavy unsettling feeling turns to his stomach as he shoves the phone back to his coat. There's a possibility that watari is dead. (But how? Did Light somehow learnt watari's name? Or did he mention to the other shinigami to kill them both?) He slowly walked towards the heavy metal doors. He knows that kira is light yagami, (why am I not dead?) And he'll be damned if he still wasn't able to put him down to his execution.

Lmao, honestly this idea only came to me when I just imagined musical L, walking down the streets covered in blood and gathers attention of concerned citizens gets arrested.

And when they interrogated him and asks for his name he's like "ryuga hideki" and the police doesn't believe him until he asks them to verify his identity through calling to-oh. (Dunno if u can do that but uhhh it happens here) and when the police gave a description of L they're like "Oh yeah that's our student, top ranker ryuga hideki" and the police started to take him seriously now and he makes up a story about waking up and possibly getting kidnapped in a warehouse.

And now he discovers that he doesn't look like the "L" of this world. It's a good thing that the L from this world managed to also get into to-oh and still have his identity hidden. But as he tries to manage surviving alone (without watari) he notices that the date is different from when he died (time travel?) And there were news about Yotsuba and a vice president(?) Higuchi getting cornered by the police and dying from a heart attack (is it kira?).

And eventually, after a week, he concluded that this might have been an alternate universe or a different world where both L and kira still existed. Considering that the task force and light yagami looked different from his world. He's sitting on the floor of the hotel he managed to get to stay in with computers around him and delved further to notice the huge amount of criminals killed. Two of them were criminals he knew of, Thierry Morello a con artist and Merrie Kenwood a thief, both which worked under L. He puts his finger on his lip, thinking. The most concerning yet, was that the L of this world wasn't doing anything.

That made him conclude that either the L of this world was different from him (he wasn't, if the data wasn't wrong the methods he tried were the same to bait kira out) or L of this world was dead.

And he had been replaced by an impostor.

(And now he has to both try find evidence to damn kira and hide from the second L which he thinks is also kira).

Plot progression!  Yotsuba’s tracks are discovered, and L’s hiring techniques are discussed a bit.  L kinda tries to flirt, but fails.  Light does not want to become part of a collection.  He expects that handcuff to come off one day.  That wasn’t what L intended inspire, but it set him off.  Bonus contemplating image:

He doesn’t get much work done that night (a mixture of feeling defensive, indignant, and just... bad in general for accidentally upsetting Light and souring the evening).

Also, some explanations:

I’m following manga canon here in regards to how they found Yotsuba’s Kira activity.  There, Matsuda kept chiming in with “I helped, too.”  I’m headcanoning that he really did help by pointing out a couple deaths Yotsuba benefited from (probably from a gossip section) that Light wrote off as coincidence but kept in the back of his mind.  Light didn’t actually say anything about Matsuda’s aid onscreen, but I have him give him credit in this private moment.  That’s the form I’d imagine Matsuda’s help would come in.  He seemed like the media guy on the Task Force~.  In the anime, he gave Light all the credit, claiming he “doesn’t know how he did it.”  I was reading the scene in the manga, and that stuck more (I watched that episode mainly for Aizawa’s blow-up~).

I took some liberties with L’s employer/employee relationship with Aiber and Wedy.  It was probably not as “doom and gloom” as I’ve portrayed here since they seemed pretty casual with L (Aiber asking permission to scam more money out of Yotsuba [manga], Wedy backtalking about having to abandon her work on other places to focus on just Higuchi...).  Though, this was from Light’s perspective, and it didn’t seem like a very glamorous life to him, seeing how he was already physically tethered to L (even if he does like him a bit here).  Aiber and Wedy had to have been fully aware of the power L had over them, and they were just making the best of it.  It was better than rotting in jail and/or getting killed by Kira (lol Aiber said this himself~).  Henh, this was probably super obvious, but the series only implied it.  I have other thoughts on their relationship, but this description is too long as it is.

the English names in Death Note were fine. Nate River is the name a real person would have, Mihael Keehl is just missing a letter, Halle Lidner doesn't raise an eyebrow, Anthony Rester is obviously supposed to be Anthony Lester which sounds backwards but is made out of two real people names, Merrie Kenwood and Thierry Morello are both not English but are fine names.

the names in the LABB novel are stupid and were written by a different person who thought he understood America a lot differently than he really did. DN names are normal, normal-ish, or sliiiightly off. LABB names are "no, wrong, that is not a human being's name."

the english names in death note aren't weird because the author doesn't know what english names sound like. the japanese names are also weird. the author didn't want to freak anyone out by accidentally writing someone's actual name in the notebook that murders people whose names are written in it. death note was published in jump, a magazine normally targeted to elementary and middle school children. it was a reasonable precaution born from a reasonable concern

Review:

I really enjoyed this series. It was so engaging and thought provoking. There was one part that bored me to tears and I kind of hated but other than that it was near perfect.

I’ve broken up my notes into parts because I read the giant 2400 bind up so it would be too long to do one post.

Hearing Light’s explanation for what he did makes me even more annoyed with the business executive plots. Light is so smart that he could figure out what he would do without his memories and what someone like Higuchi would do. That’s so awesome! Now why would I want to read 17 chapters full of these stupid business executives? There were way too many to care about or even remember their names. They weren’t as smart or cool or interesting as Light and L. Light and L figure out it’s the eight so quickly. They were pathetic antagonists.

Ugh! Misa can’t remember L’s real name! I mean…I’m glad L isn’t dead but still.

So we meet Mello, who at first I thought was a girl but is apparently a boy. And he grew up with Near in the orphanage and they were in competition to become the next L. Mello was always in Near’s shadow so now Mello is going to do anything to defeat Kira and Near. Which includes kidnapping and getting the Death Note that the Japanese police have.

So Watari ran this orphanage that was some sort of training facility for future L’s. Which means that Watari was some sort of father figure to L…which means my heart hurts.

This is actually a really interesting plot line. We have this weird sibling dynamic. It’s another cat and mouse game now that L is gone.

“Mello: I want Kira’s head and I’ll kill anyone who gets in my way. I’ll be number one.”—Page 1370

Huh, maybe training children to become these obsessive detectives is a bad thing.

It’s time for Near and Light to meet.

“L number 2, nice to meet you.”—Page 1413

“The original L gave his life and proved to the world that a mass murderer named Kira is lurking somewhere in Japan. He was even able to find out what Kira was using to do those killings. So Mikami is punishing the by-standards now. This is turning into an Seinfeld episode.

I’m assuming that Mello is going to show up at the last minute and completely ruin Near’s plans.

Mello’s kidnapped Takada!

And now Matt is dead. I hope Stephanie isn’t too sad about it.

And now Light has killed Takada so he can destroy Mello’s body.
