Bill, the demon who most likely accidentally destroyed his entire dimension, who then had to make himself out to be the monster he felt that he was? His ego wouldn’t allow himself to be anything but that monster, and he lies about enjoying all the destruction he causes until his lies are no longer lies to him.

He’d never admit that he wanted more from Ford than the portal and nothing more. He’s supposed to be selfish, only caring about what new planet to consume. Relating to a mortal flesh bag? That would defeat the image he’s created for himself.

Ford saw Bill as perfection in his youth, and Bill valued him for being a dreamer. Bill was the only thing that could efficiently stroke Fords ego, and Ford enjoyed every second at the time. He’s the smartest man on earth, not able to relate to anyone but a dream demon he thought was trying to help him. Ford practically worshiped Bill like he was a god. Little did Ford know that the creature he thought was light was actually a great darkness. The unimaginable feeling of betrayal he felt when he learned the truth.

Bill played the game with him, not only to keep up the facade, but surely for something more as well. Ford seeing him for what he really was and making it his life’s goal to destroy him absolutely ruined Bill. Bill didn’t know what he had until it was already gone.

In the Book of Bill, he’s a horribly unreliable narrator. But Ford is way more reliable, and so is viewing everything from a completely uninvolved perspective. Combine what we see from the show, Journal Three, and The Book of Bill? And oh baby we got a recipe for a disaster of a relationship

They are so horrible for each other, but that sort of chemistry is so fun to explore when it comes to character analysis! It makes both Bill and Fords dynamic, their motivations, and other character related things so much deeper!

Bill needs purpose, and his purpose was ruined by his own undoing. He can blame any of the Pines family for this, but really, he’s his own worst enemy. The man needs serious help lol. Fords moved on, he has better things to worry about. Bill just can’t see past the potential for what could have been. Unable to forget the past, no matter how hard he lies to himself

I would definitely not say that Bill did the same thing to Dipper. Yes, he manipulated the kid and made his and his sister’s lives hell. But their history is not at all equal when Dipper didn’t dedicate his life to a false god like Ford did

me, internally: The themes introduced by Porter's godhood and Jace's servitude toward him are genuinely interesting. So much of Junior Year concerns itself w/ fairness n personal autonomy n devotion n worship n making your own meaning. The idea that Jace and Porter "have always been a duo" n the fact that Brennan has been holding onto this reveal since SY means that Jace was retooled to exist FOR porter. Porter's quest for godhood eclipses anything else that could have mattered about jace, his purpose becomes serving Porter on both a textual n meta level. On both levels he is contorted into someone alien to himself. Even though he is a character with few lines, Jace's voice in freshman year compared to Junior year feels distinct, he sounds younger, he sounds like he's looking for connection, he honestly sounds like a pretty recent hire, and in that context is it not pitiable what happened to him? Does that not make him similar to Sandra Lynn, a young person who was exploited by someone older than her and who uses religion as a tool for control? And yet the tone over and over again treats him with ambivalence in a world that is obsessed with fair. The text over and over again wants to reiterate this idea of characters getting to make their own meaning, but what does it mean to be a sequel to someone else? To be a footnote in their vision? Jace's life is a decision a GM made, he is Porter's sequel on a textual and meta level. He is continually denied interiority within the text (perfect example is sophmore year where teachers are not allowed to be hirelings when Jace is proposed than an immediate workaround is made for Gilear to come with the Bad kids). He never had a choice but to be a follower to the god of war because the other option was deathly silence, a prop or a martyr like Lucy or Yolanda. Is being remembered fondly and uncomplicatedly despite your flaws but being deathly silent better than being corrupted? The question of Jace's motivation is continually left unanswered n in that, part of the Starbreaker thought experiment is wondering how exactly Jace slots into this Plan, into Porter's life. He could simply be a lackey, sure, but is being forced to be a lackey for a god not in a way its own form of worship? To imagine Jace's subservience to Porter as a kind of love, a kind of toxic old man yaoi if you will, is maybe a way to play at a world where he gets a sense of purpose, or some kind of love in return, even if that life is fucked n compromised n broken, because he was asked "do you want this life" n he said yes. What does it mean to be a person who is contorted into villainy without a choice when the very undercurrent of your world is telling everyone else "there's always a choice!"? When the text condemns you for evil if you only ever can exist as a tool? Before Porter became Jace's world, he was practically egoless, no matter what tone his dialogue takes on. Every scene he's in, he's w/e the situation demanded of him, taking up no oxygen in the room w/out even a memorable gimmick to make him distinct n funny. Pure function. It wasn't a big life but it was his. Was wanting to live, being content to be a footnote to the Bad Kids the sin that condemned Jace stardiamond? Or was wanting to live even if he no longer was recognizable to himself the sin that condemned him? Or is it the fact that he enables cruelty, and is that fair when characters who are horrible in their own ways get a pass as long as they are fun and funny and memorable? Is his life better now that he is more of a presence in his cruel and twisted but albeit slightly more memorable state, if his life now condemns him to be hated forever? Does Jace get power from his deal with Porter? Is getting a time in the spotlight of the narrative its own form of power? Is Jace happy serving Porter? Would Jace be happy loving Porter? Did Porter give jace new life by destroying the old jace, by making sure all paths lead straight back to him? Is Starbreaker just our way of trying to say imagine Jace Stardiamond happy?

I think a reason that makes laloward so compelling is that Lalo and Howard are characters LITERALLY never meant to collide. It's made pretty explicit in the show in the way that Howard is pretty much the last remnant of *Jimmy's* life getting destroyed by Lalo, the representation of *Saul's* criminal world. In the end, though, Jimmy/Saul serves as a bridge for Lalo and Howard.

You can't ignore that any kind of Howard/Lalo relationship could really only work under a certain set of conditions (if we want to adhere to the universe of the show) and none of the conditions are favorable, adding a new type of complexity to the whole thing- it all depends on how you interpret the conditions they're under. There's a lot of nuance once you start thinking about those conditions apart from their basic dynamic. Like yes it's crazy sociopathic cartel member × golden boy lawyer, that's the idea. But considering the actual mechanics of their relationship, are we thinking about them under the impression that Howard doesn't know Lalo is a drug lord? Or does he know and stays despite it for whatever reason? Either condition creates different routes the relationship could take and that's just so intriguing.

On a different note, season 6 Lalo and Howard are perfect doomed toxic old man yaoi material. Lalo is pissed and Howard is pissed + vulnerable. Lalo plays people like it's nothing and Howard is naive. Yes he's logical but his logic only goes to a certain point until he starts thinking with his feelings. Lalo has a lot of traits he doesn't, things he'd be left wanting given the state of his life in s6. All of this to say that Lalo would surely get a kick from influencing Saul's world by affecting Jimmy's world as a power play. And it wouldn't exactly be difficult to do it. Lalo gets a new toy to play with and Howard gets to buy into the little act Lalo puts on for him. Maybe that's them at the start and as time goes on things get more serious (i like to think), just depending on how you want to interpret it. But no matter which way you slice it, theyre not stable and things will end badly, like most things in the Gilliverse....

They're so different but you can still find common ground between- and a large part of that comes from Jimmy/Saul. Someone who's a pain in both Howard and Lalo's asses. Go figure.

Hi there! I’m so happy you enjoyed the recs, and I love the 3 titles you highlighted. The whole Canis series is absolutely brilliant, really unique stories (my personal favourite is Dear Hatter) and I love the art too. Blue Flag caught me completely off guard tbh, I wasn’t expecting anything that came out of that manga especially in a school setting. It really felt like a relatable and bittersweet coming of age love/friendship story. I have mixed feelings about that rushed ending (not as explicit as I’d have liked), but I’ll take it! In a perfect universe (inside my head) Kids on the Slope would end in a similar way 😂

Wet Sand is one of my all-time favourites, it has everything I love in a BL (gorgeous art, complex characters, hot smut), it’s an intriguing and sexy adult romance that got me so immersed it even made me overcome my intense dislike for love triangles. I’m 100% team T.J, love the little toxic thing they’ve got going on (so raw, so tender!) but I do think the story is moving towards an Ian/Jo endgame and I’m okay with it. I guess Jo could represent a safer, “healthier” relationship away from all that mafia shit so good for them, but I’ll always have a soft spot for T.J, and I think so will Ian :)

As for your last question: YESSSS I love power bottoms and older couples! Those are actually great ideas for future rec lists, would anyone be interested?

This is kinda outside from what I usually post here but you’ll have to hear me ramble about my fav dark ship atm. (Won’t tag the show so no antis appear out of nowhere :( )

(Spoilers ahead) Let’s talk about Squid Game and how HOT Gi-Hun and 001 are. Like holy shit. The "crazy psycho that acts friendly and helpful x perfect moral compass guy who ends up either getting corrupted or broken" trope has to be one of my absolute fav in the world. Please gimme more.

Nah because I need 001 to sleep with Gi-Hun during the games, I need them to stay together, 001 slowly pushing Jung-Bae away. Until the end of the show where he shoots him. Gi-Hun having a mental breakdown during the games and 001 comforting him, fully aware his pain is his fault. When the games begin again, I need the frontman to then put Gi-Hun in a cage and treat him like a zoo animal, forced to watch the rest of his friends die while he cannot do shit. Gi-Hun still believes Jung-Il is dead, and there he is, mocking him under his mask.

What if one night he sits in his cell and talks to him, listen to him rent about how of an awful individual he is. Gi-Hun ends up trying to punch the frontman, the guards outside the cell aren’t moving, they were told not to interfere. The frontman chokes him before he punches him and he pushes him to the ground. Gi-Hun tries to fight back until the frontman takes out a gun and point it at him. Then he takes off his mask.

And Gi-Hun is so so confused. His friend did all of this? A man he trusted and even appreciated? Couple days ago, he was asking him out for a drink when they’d get out of there. And there he was, a gun pointed at his head. No because what if there were jerking off together under that bed one night and what if they happened to kiss one night while guarding together. That same man in front of him with a gun. That same man who shot his best friend Jung-Bae.

And "Jung-Il" would start groping him, just like he did back then when it was consensual. Gi-Hun is frozen there. He cannot think for himself anymore. His "friend's" hand is jerking him off. He starts crying, 001 shush him off. "I thought you liked it when I did that ?"

LIKE PLEASE WHAT IF. WHAT IF 001 DID THAT COUPLE HOURS AFTER SHOOTING JUNG-BAE. Blood still on Gi-Hun’s face and shirt, In-Ho simply cannot help himself. >>>

WHAT THE HELL

HIGH CARD IS GOOD?!

tl;dr very flashy and aesthetic, consistently good in that regard, but the story was not always gripping to me. however, with the ultimate payoff in the last three eps, totally worth it imo

full review:

wow wow wow i'm kind of glad i fell way behind on anime and had the last three eps of s2 to binge all at once because hoooly shit i enjoyed that immensely

at no point did i think high card was bad, but it definitely had moments where it didn't fully grab me. there were times when it felt like all flash, no substance

and it's definitely not perfect, i have some serious and fairly significant gripes with it. mainly i'm really bummed that leo, wendy, and vijay never really got fully fleshed out. i mean i get it, finn's the main character and chris is the thinly veiled love interest also important so obviously they're going to take up most of the time, but i really feel like the other members of the crew had so much unexplored potential (especially wendy and vijay, because leo did sort of get his moment as a factor in the old man yaoi situation)

speaking of which THE OLD MAN YAOI!! man there were a lot of moving pieces in this show, and sometimes they came together in messy ways (or didn't really come together at all... some bits do still feel pretty disjointed and jumpy to me, tbh)

but overall the payoff of the s2 finale was absolutely worth it to me, particularly since it dealt with my favorites of those moving pieces: the old man yaoi and the sudden YANDERE ONIISAN ARC

i find myself really wishing the show had gone harder on both of those threads sooner, but like... honestly i'm not disappointed with how they played out. the whole theodore and ban thing could not have been more tropey (YEARS of loathing only for a "the one i wanted to protect all along was... you" and then dying for each other like HELLO yes an absolute tropefest BUT TROPES THAT I LOVE. GOOD FOR THOSE TOXIC DOOMED YAOI MFERS)

tilt has always been fascinating to me right from the character design and i am more or less satisfied with how things played out for him too, though i kind of wish we'd had more of this development spread throughout the series. i guess it was there, but... i dunno. in some ways feels like there could have been More (but i may be biased)

like you gotta feel bad for him, it's a sad story, but also that extreeemely creepy unhinged yandere oniisan "i have been stalking you i literally have a wall with giant blown up photos of you i hate the other guy who is calling himself your brother" sequence was SO FUCKING DELICIOUS LIKE WTF??? stunned and absolutely blown away by how hard they went on that, what a delight

(ironically it makes me think about how unhinged matakara in bucchigiri?! just doesn't work while unhinged tilt in high card works super well, but this is not about bucchigiri?! so i won't get too into that)

i am still admittedly just. kind of like. idk. i go back and forth on finn and chris, as characters and as partners. i don't dislike them but they aren't always all that compelling to me. sometimes they definitely are, but sometimes they just fall a bit flat to me. this probably isn't an issue with them as characters, though, just a matter of taste. i occasionally found the chemistry between them lacking as well, but sometimes it was really on point

same feeling about the crew dynamics in general. i looove a good like heist crew or spy agency crew, whatever it is, when the dynamics just click. and sometimes they didn't, here. i am too sleepy to articulate it properly right now but it just felt like there was something missing, some pieces not really fitting together. i didn't dislike any of the characters, but just... i guess wanted more team shenanigans? maybe there was no time for that but it would have been nice (like this is one show that could have done with a few filler and/or fluff episodes, imo!)

anyway. christ. my eye emoji-ing at tilt based solely on his character design finally paid off after two gay ass seasons lmao. good night

Okay so canonically we have Patchy x Pith. Lesbians who help each other become better. I can’t remember if they become official or not but there’s mutual pining and a one bed trope in their dynamic.

We also canonically have Pith x Poly, who are exes. Poly made so many things worse for Pith’s schizophrenia, and has stalked her several times to the point where Pith considered getting a restraining order. I’d need a compelling argument to lean towards shipping them.

Cal x Orgon are also exes. They’re my delectable and beautiful toxic old man yaoi that I can’t stop thinking about. However, they are TOXIC. Orgon is AROACE, and does not desire a real relationship with Cal. Cal simply doesn’t care because he’s Jesus and he gets what he wants.

NOTE ON SHIPPING ORGON - I am well aware that he might end up turning out like Alastor from Hazbin Hotel, and I can’t stop that from happening. But I will simply remind all of you that since the accident, he is labeled as AROACE. He went unlabeled before, but even then he did not desire a romantic or sexual relationship very much before meeting Cal.

In any case, they were happy together in the past (before Orgon learned about Cal being a cult leader and all), so if you want to ship them happily, I’d recommend thinking about them more in that era. If you want to ship them TOXICALLY, then yeah current era is perfect. Mmm toxic old man yaoi. Just keep in mind that Orgon wants none of it.

Getting into fanon ships, the first one I can think of is Clay x Poly. Clay DOES show concern for Poly’s home situation in one scene, and actually doesn’t hate Poly like Poly hates them. Poly also shows worry for Clay after they’re taken by Orgon at one point. It could work, methinks. Enemies to lovers. I just didn’t make it canon because no one deserves to be in a relationship with Poly. Poly will just ruin the person like he did with Pith.

Clay x Pith - this one could also fit. I was originally gonna ship them before I decided that Patchy and Pith would be cuter (again, in my opinion). They’ve been in the band together for a very long time, and both of them care deeply for each other. I could see it, honestly.

Patchy x Poly - first up, Patchy is a lesbian, so this technically wouldn’t even work. They only have one interaction in canon as well. This one wouldn’t be for me even if Patchy weren’t a lesbian.

We’re heading deeper into the stuff that’s more icky for me. The thing that started this post was a jumpscare from the realization that someone somewhere was gonna end up shipping Patchy and Orgon. Patchy is a lesbian. Orgon is aroace. He’s also old enough to be her dad. He IS her dad. It’s like Hank x Connor from DBH except Patchy’s much younger. Yes she’s technically an adult but she’s still a LESBIAN. Orgon is her father figure.

SAME WITH CAL. Cal is ALSO father figure. HE ALSO SHOT PATCHY. He doesn’t even CARE about her.

Somehow Clay x Orgon is WORSE. Clay’s technically still a minor. Yes they interact a LOT in canon but once again Orgon is AROACE AND IN HIS 40S. And Clay is 17.

SAME WITH CAL.

Also Cal is straight-up gay. A full homosexual. So Pith x Cal wouldn’t work either. Also Pith’s also much younger than Cal. And also Cal caused her a shitload of trauma. Idk how that would even work.

What would even be left after that?? Poly x Cal or sum shit????? First off, age gap. Second off, they never interact?????

God ships are weird to think about, but if I’m gonna somehow get a fandom then I’ll have to. With great power comes great shipping wars or something idk.
