I think more trans people need to have names that sound like Skulduggery Pleasant characters.
#I feel like someone's going to misinterpret this#So I'd just like you to know that I'm a transmasc who is seriously considering Exoskeleton as a name#The target audience for this post is me#Also for those of you who don't read Skulduggery Pleasant:#The name of the series is a character's name (he is a talking skeleton)#The protagonist is called Valkyrie Cain#There's a character called Ghastly Bespoke#There's one called Fletcher Renn who has stupid hair and I once had a dream with him in#And I'm not up-to-date yet but my dad says there's one guy who literally named himself after Luke Skywalker#Skulduggery Pleasant is very cool and you should read it#There are like. Loads of books though#I only own the first nine.

Rewatched The Hobbit and LOTR and the whole time I was torn between 'heck yeah this is fun' and 'but that didn't happen in the book!'

Do you have any recommendations for books that are similar to acod?
Unfortunately, not really. I and others are on the hunt for them, though!
Primary one so far is The Locked Tomb series by Tamsyn Muir--the style of "fuck you knowing who the hell the mc/narrator is is a privilege not a right" is strong there. Similar in how drastically different events/understanding is at the beginning vs the end. Delightful science fantasy story. like acod you WILL be confused
On a related note: this is a list of books similar to TLT, so by extension you may find something there worth reading/similar to acod?
And I have yet to read him for myself, so this might be off, but I've heard good things about Ken Liu's books? About the plot and character complexity. Personally have been meaning to start the Dandelion Dynasty
Also if you're willing to branch out of books, I know I rec it a lot, but Black Sails (to me) has a similar vibe. It's not fantasy, but the layers to every action, the secrecy, the reveals, the character depth and how everyone overlaps and clashes with each other. Very compelling
I wish I could give you more! since acod i've been wanting to find more like it, but it is a process--we will get there, though!
#a chorus of dragons#quil's queries#nonsie#also if others have more/better ideas please do feel free to share#i would love to give you a thorough list nonsie. first I just need to read a shit load of books#acod has such a unique feeling to me. so its hard to rec anything like it.#i just gotta find them though I'm positive them exist#we can search for them together :)#also for some reason I want to add the expan2e to this list#idk why. it's wayyy more sci-fi. and also I haven't read it#just seen the show#but given how good the show adaptation is I'm pretty sure the books go hard#also my dad adores them so i do have secondhand accounts of how good they are#but just because they're good doesn't mean they're like acod#so. didn't add it. but it was in my mind this whole time

More British words because I thought words like carboot and bin lorry was normal:
Chuffed: This is when we're really happy- like 2am-singing-karaoke-happy. Odd I know!
Brolly: Umbrella. Yeah this one's a bit odd as well. I've never used it personally but some of my family always say "chuck us the brolly" or something along those lines.
Crisps: Potato chips. American's PLEASE don't kill me I want to live
Bucketin' down: A term used to describe heavy rain!
Gutted: Extremely disappointed. I often use this- very loudly, might I add- to the annoyance of my family
Bonnet: Hood of a car. I find this REALLY strange and have never used it myself.
So there's some British words! I hope you enjoyed them!🙂
REMINDS ME, another thing that was wild to me was how "chippy" gets applied to way more than just places that sell fries
I went thinking I understood everything, like, "Ok. Chips = Fries. Crisps = Potato Chips. Got it." But then partner would say, "wanna go to a chippy"
Me in my head: (wow you really like fries dont ya)
But apparently the truth is... that's just what they were calling a small restaurant you don't sit down at. Like a takeout place. A chippy can sell chinese food. A chippy can sell fries and hot dogs.
This took me an embarassingly long time to realize. I really just thought partner wanted fries constantly. I was beginning to believe there were special, hidden fry places that I just wasn't noticing.
I also found out that "spanner" is unironically a light insult but considering the fact I thought they were a Fanatical Fry Fiend for at least a week I probably deserved it. I WAS being a proper spanner.
#We did get loaded fries at some point tho#And they were good fries#Cheesy and delicious with some gravy#Bone babble#To be fair to me though I was kinda thinking of the specialty meatball places that pop up here#My area actually has several meatball specialty places. They just sell fancy meatballs#That's the entire menu#Different kinds of meatballs with different meats. Fishballs. Venisonballs. Wagyuballs.#So like. You could write a book on what I don't know#Maybe England just has an obsession with turning different vegetables into fries. I thought. Like a fool.#Nope. I live in a place with a very special kind of meatball-induced brainrot.#And chippy simply did not mean what I thought it meant#Oh to be in the alternate reality where I went to The Chippery and got to sample different types of vegetable fries#Mmmm#And fancy sauces#Also I did enjoy thank u#The only one partner wasn't familiar with was Bucketin Down. Probably because their preferred term is Pissin#Pissin Down

you know what? to be completely fair to dr victor hoppe, if that had happened to me, I, too would develop a complicated (read: fucked up) relationship with like. Everything
#(he’s the main character of the book I’m currently reading lol)#(de engelenmaker/the angel maker by stefan brijs)#elli rambles#can’t speak for the english translation but the original dutch book is really good so far#even though I found the first part of the book pretty boring the second part is incredibly interesting#like man! I Get why he turned out Like That! what the fuck!#the book is such an interesting exploration of christianity/religious trauma & hubris & parent-child relationships & nature vs nurture#that said I do wonder: mr stefan brijs were you perhaps raised catholic? obviously he could have been raised areligiously & just done#loads of research etc but catholicism is Such an important thing in the book that I think it’s the most likely explanation#I would probably get even more out of the book if I like. knew the bible but I am Not reading that thang for this#though it might be worthwhile to go through the dates mentioned in the book & look up if they’ve got importance in christianity (like#holidays & such). wouldn’t put it past the author#anyway. advertisement voice: god complexes! medical inaccuracies & malpractice! explorations of characters that make you go ‘why the fuck#are they Like That’! if you like these things you may be interested in ‘the angel maker’ by stefan brijs#de engelenmaker

Not to talk about MRA-lite spaces again but I'm going to need everyone to understand that in these spaces, the subtext of 'men don't get to talk about their problems' is ALWAYS 'and it is women's fault!'
#my time in the MRA-lite saltmines returns to me yet again whenever i see the transandrophobia side of tumblr#look- it's just the same stuff ok? Or maybe i'm just biased because it triggers me the fucking same no matter who is saying it#also please note i'm saying MRA-lite and not MRA- I understand that MRA usually has connotations of violence for people#MRA-lite is nothing like that it's just a load of talking about men's issues but without any of the context#the very important context that you need to place the issues into wider society and its effect on everyone and not just men#these spaces may not be violent but they are quite pointless and the conversations never ever go anywhere#and it's been the same like 5 conversations for the past 15 years and no doubt much longer but that's as far back as i go with it#every time someone discovers the 5 or so men's issue they act like they just converted to a religion or something#and bring it up in everything. I was like that too at like 21 i promise i get it! but now i look back and CRINGE#and i am a guy now! ok? I get it that a lot of people are transmasc doing this i get why! but.....#i just wish it was less of a Thing. and i genuinely find it triggering.#because i do fucking care ok? i have academic books about some of the 5 or so men's issues on my bookshelf!#because actually there are people writing these books and they do care!#i had someone a while ago saying it was 'sad' to see a trans man talk like i do on this so i explained where i'm coming from#and they never came back so i will never know if they saw my point of view and that kind of sucked#hopefully that won't happen again- i really don't like arguing with other transmasc people (i like discussions though)#anyway i'll stop rambling now

i love your fic with all my heart. i'm reading it for a second time now!
my question is despite this being a reader fic, do you personally have a face claim you think of when writing?
Being totally transparent, the only person I imagine the reader looking like is me. Maybe a prettier version of me, but as long as I'm reading/writing it I am envisioning myself 100%. But since I try to keep her description vague beyond specific attributes (hair colour, eye colour, a vague notion of the size of her build, and vaguely her height).
Which I know may put off some people, but I also wanted to leave enough room that you may envision whoever you want. Be that a face claim of your own, or just yourself. I'm weary of giving people ideas of what I think my reader looks like in very specific visual detail or photos because for those imagining themselves, that picture might totally take then out of it which makes me nervous. I want my reader to be whoever you want, be it you or a face claim. I already have some descriptors that some people deem unacceptable in a reader fic because now shes not totally a blank slate, so I would rather not accidentally ruin someone else's enjoyment by giving then the idea that maybe imagining themselves isnt good enough.
Also I am so sorry you're reading it a second time, that's so many words and so much stupid bullshit, I am so sorry for your time loss.
#some people like faceclaims but for reader characters i dont want to get to specific and ruin the image you may enjoy having#i have a fuck ton of face claims for book only characters though i got trunk loads of those

Holo-novels aren’t novels, they’re video games
#I GUESS they can be choose-your-own-adventure novels#until I mentally framed them as video games I would always get caught up on how they know what they’re supposed to do in the narrative#holodeck load screen giving you background info like in photons be free#they get that little error noise every time they stray too far from the narrative#or like in lower decks the computer generates a different ai narrative for you#can’t call them holo video games though#holo rpg#nothing wrong with either format but you engage differently with novels and video games#but video games still have a narrative that can go in many directions depending on how you play#who controls the narrative the author or the lector#choose your own adventure books were very big in the 90s#I would always read the whole thing#how very like me to get hung up on insignificant details in the Star Trek universe#hot holodeck discourse over here#star trek voyager#sonic shower thoughts

Disclaimer: These thoughts are more emotionally than logically expressed, and reflect my own experience and preference.
#I have some beef with Lockwood and I say this as someone who really enjoys both the show and the books.#I've been doing a rewatch to introduce it to my dad (who loves it!) but we just hit Episode 5 and - is it just me but does this episode#plunge rather deeper into the darkness than we see in the previous episodes? It makes sense narratively of course#Complete Fiction has the task of structuring it such that there's a proper midpoint shift in the series and in my own works I increase#the stakes around this point and really let the protagonists struggle. So it's not so much that I have an issue with things getting#more focused dangerous and difficult. I don't know that I have a logical reason for the unease I feel with Episode 5 - there's just somethi#vaguely disturbing to me about it. It may be my own personal sensitivities. The interrogation scene at Winkman's has absolutely nothing#graphic about it and I appreciate the discretion - but it's just so intense - the threats to draw on Lockwood's face with the heated#instrument - the whole electric shocks sequence - I have been told I have a particularly vivid and empathetic imagination so I may just#be filling in too many gaps and feeling the scene more intensely than some would but it genuinely bothered me. More so on rewatch#though I didn't like it the first time either. I wonder too if it's because on rewatch I can compare it to the scene in the book#Gosh - the book scene is *comedic!* 'Let's disguise ourselves as ditzy tourists and while you check the backroom I'll let my coins#fall all over the place and crawl around under the tables loaded with antiques and freak the owners out! And when they get caught#Winkman just lifts them off the ground menacingly and chucks them in the street. The fact that we had to turn this into a midnight#torture scene for TV - I don't know - I don't like it. And just the atmosphere isn't as balanced as in the other episodes. So many flashbac#to grotesque corpse faces which are somehow a lot more disturbing than the CGI ghosts which feel much more Halloweenish#Not much love and light carved out in the darkness. There's some for sure! And even in the torture scene that bugs me I appreciate how it#shows Lockwood's heart and allows us to explore some meaningful territory that the ditzy tourist scene doesn't#I'm just griping and mainly hoping that the rest of the series is more how I remember it from first watch. The warmth of the Portland#Row gang means a lot to me. Stacking this dark feel on top of the discomfort I have with the harsh language rubs me the wrong way#(Thankfully I have online filters so the language isn't an issue for me but it does make me more reluctant to recommend to friends.

Just a thought about kids and electronics, is that there's a difference between doing something like giving a kid a tablet, but you have an art program loaded up for them; and just handing it to them to browse youtube with
I'm not saying you should never do that, it's just I'm saying I see people complain about kids having electronics while waiting at the doctor's office and how you should give them coloring books instead and... for me my thought is that I would use something like a tablet to basically be a mess free way to let them do coloring book type activities
Main reason I'd prefer it is then there's nothing to lose or clean up
Don't have kids, don't plan to, and I know people use electronics like babysitters
But me, I think I would give my kid something like a tablet, I'd just be picky about what I loaded up on to it and basically try and have it fill the role of coloring book, books of puzzles, blah blah blah whatever. You know, the kinds of stuff you'd want to give kids to entertain them
Of course, would be a pain in my ass cause I'd have to go through before hand and make sure that none of this stuff was running ads, that I approved of any app they were using, basically that this was a curated device that I specifically approved for the kid to use mostly unsupervised... but that's how I'd do it
Didn't want to add this on to the bottom of another post, just kind of my thoughts on it
#it would take a lot of work though; surely it would#it takes a lot of work to curate apps for myself; cause apps suck way more ass than stuff on PC and even that can be a pain#like... lets say I want to put some picture books on there for them#well I need to find a good app that can load those files#and I need to make sure it's not spraying my kid with ads; cause no fucking ads for kids#and I'd have to make sure it was just generally not malware same as I have to for me#and and and... but I think that's the way I'd do it#..at that point I'd mostly be concerned about the kids eyes; like the content is all stuff that's good for the kid... but like...#hell; even my eyes; is it good to look at screens as much as I do? and my eyes are grown#kind of need to; since most of my entertainment and socializing and education is done through my computer#but yeah... eye stuff#anyway though... I think tablets as plenty fine to give kids; and I think that having them serve roles like coloring books would is fine#...I'd consider even loading them up with videos; curated by me#but my kid would have to be old enough to use headphones and understand to use headphones and...#well that's just one more thing to lose; but I'd consider it... pick a quality kids show they liked#...not that any of this matters seeing as I don't intend to have kids#...though who knows; maybe this would be something worth figuring out; maybe it could help parents out#if I could suggest a suite of suitable apps to choose from and how to rip all the spyware and ads out of them#how to like... password protect an adblocking app just so the kid can't get in there and mess with it#that sort of thing#...anyway; just more nonsense thoughts that have crossed my mind

So I am a software engineer. My job is like this:
Formally, we can think of the troubleshooting process as an application of the hypothetico-deductive method [wikipedia citation]
VERSUS
and really, I am having some feelings about that first sentence. The zine is good though.
#*shaking my fist at the google sre book*#y'all really write like this?#“[manual reports] concentrate the problem-solving load on a handful of team members that the reporters happen to know” is too real though

Yessss dnd nerds :DD and dam yeah that is a wacky situation it turned out sick tho!! Perks of being at least mostly blonde is i dont have to panic ab bleach tho i was thinking about combing like the three leftover pinks i have and then maybe doin somethin like what u have cause its so cool and i like Need to dye my hair again soon qhfkks <3
Grew up with a dnd nerd (my dad), so I think it's in my dna or something, just latent rn. I've engaged casually, but the extreme nerdom has yet to be activated.
But yeah I really just fuck around and find out with my hair most of the time. If it really goes bad I can just shave it off, so very little stress about it all (despite what my christmas color near meltdown might imply).
Also you are SO lucky ough that's a whole step and situation you don't even gotta deal with I'm. Damn. I'm not jealous because I have no desire to be blond but like. Bleaching is such a hassle and you don't even gotta do it -_-
But also!! If you do something like what I have I sooo wanna know about it and hear what you end up doing! Fun hair colors are a delight of life so I'm very happy for you!! Have so so much silly with it :3
#quil's queries#a-lonely-tatertot#come to think of it I don't think i've ever really seriously played dnd like with high detail and technical aspects#because like I said. grew up with it. so my first exposures were very low level and lenient#and I've dm'd more than I've been a player#and i've always dm'd either kids (like actual kids. 5 and 10) or people who are having that low level lenient introduction#and in really big groups so I ended up fudging a shit load of rules because they were middle schoolers#and I haven't played in a while so#i don't think i've ever been really technical with it#but did grow up with the game#and my dad does have a shit load of dnd books in multiple editions (i think he even has like a pre dnd edition? idk what it is#i just know it's like The First Thing)#so many dnd books in my house#last time I played was as a guest on this one podcast#i never actually listened to the episode I was on though#but as far as I know it's still out there#I played Rock the barbarian (they/them)#anyway!#getting distracted but. dnd very fun :)#i should get more into it
