oh yeah and here's a video i had to make to help me visualize sniper's journey behind enemy lines in chapter 4 (made in gmod, so forgive the wacky posing)(who am i kidding, it's freakin gmod that's what youre here for)

these thumbnails were jotted down in an absolute haze bc i really wanted to get them on paper before i forgot them >_> hence why my handwriting is all over the dang place

youll notice that chapter 3 went through this short period where i really, really wanted to draw out the projector scene from chapter 3:

It's as if he's standing in front of a blank screen. The projector stands before him. (...) Light flashes across his chest. That's all he sees: that light. The shapes that dance before him. The shapes he cannot make out--but that flash by, anyway.

but i couldnt for the life of me find a composition i actually liked. plus, if i had gone through with it, it would've used yellow, which wouldn't have matched the theme of red, blue, black, and white.

speaking of chapter art that didn't make the cut, chapter 5 initially looked very different from the one i ended up posting! i really wanted to emphasize the moment sniper breaks the phone, but perhaps it would've felt too tense, since it followed chapter 4's somewhat violent cover. that, and i thought itd be thematically and symbolically significant for the last piece of cover art to lack the color red entirely.

spy being on chapter 3's cover was not planned at ALL. he wasnt a big part of the chapter in the original draft, in fact i had implied that engie had sent him to talk to sniper, as opposed to him doing this of his own accord like he does in the final product.

sniper and scout's fight scene in chapter 2 wasn't planned, either! i added it bc i thought it would be nice to show that sniper cant just go around threatening people without reaping the consequences of it...scout is a grown ass, violent man. he wasnt about to take that shit lying down ya know?

Replica Holiday Special Winners!

Happy Holidays everyone! It's that time of year and you know what that means! Time to announce the winners for the DTIYS Replica Holiday Special Cover!

I received so many wonderful submissions. Far more than I had anticipated! They were all so unique and creative and it was an absolute joy to look at each and every one of them! I really underestimated however how difficult it would be to choose with them all being so unique from each other. In the end, I decided to gauge the top picks on how well their cover captured the "essence" of what this Special is going to be like! Without further ado, here are the winners.

HONORABLE MENTION - @matchstique

Buddy! I love this piece so dang much! It has so much character and perfectly displays the wacky hijinks we can expect as well as the huge amount of stress our poor boys are under during these trying, pregnancy times. The movement and colors work so well and make me excited for what comes next! Seldom do I see pregnant females shown as the badasses they are, but you have gone and turned Cassandra into an absolute icon with this piece! Bless you!

3RD PLACE - @thegunnsara

Sara, the shear amount of craft you put into your art is STAGGERING. Every scuff on Raph's shell and wisp of smoke screams of a quality I can only hope to attain someday. I literally want to be you when I grow up! That said, the concept of this piece is also fantastic. One of the things I'm must excited about for this Special is getting to see Raph and Casey as they were and witnessing the strong bond they share. I love them dearly and this cover captures their strength and tenacity so perfectly. Gods among men.

2ND PLACE - @cupcakeslushie

Slushie, this cover is so damn fun and dynamic that I can't stop looking at it! Your attention to detail and composition are masterful and the fact that you could fit such a bombastic battle into such a limited space speaks to how crazy talented you are! You also do a wonderful job of retaining both the intensity of the apocalypse but also that playful edge that Rise always manages to retain! It's definitely the cover that would catch my eye on a shelf and make me want to turn the page to see what happens next!

1ST PLACE - @abbeyofcyn

Cyn, the moment I saw this cover, I gasped! It's funny because this is both a piece I could have totally seen myself doing had I done the cover, yet crafted in a unique way I could have never come up with on my own! On top of that, this slick composition scratches my little designer brain juuust right. The use of the hands motif is such a great element because to me, it encapsulates the conflicting themes of family/parenthood with the drama of what it means to be human. On top of that, having each character as one of the digits both connected to and encircling Casey is such a wonderful touch that really drives the symbolism home. Somehow, you managed to peer into the future and perfectly capture how the finale of this special is going to feel. Thank you so much Cyn for such a wonderful piece!

Now that I think about it, looking back on these winners as a set, all four them actually do an amazing job as individual covers for each of the four "acts" that will make up this special. That was not at all my intention, but it kind of worked out perfectly for that. Gets me all emotional!

I also definitely want to put a spotlight on the other amazing submissions, many of which made it SO close to the top slots! I was going to post these pieces individually but I was worried people wouldn't then go to their blogs to view the covers, so instead have a compilation and links to the full versions! Please check out everyones amazing covers and give them some love. They all worked really hard and it means so much to me. Thank you everyone!

This is gonna be a very weird color meta on Eddie, so strap in, I guess🫶

Okay, so, during season 7 Eddie didn't have a lot of color attached to him, while he is usually in neutral tones, he had no color except for a few specific color theory moments (the green to match the blue with Buck during 704 and 706, the pink from the bachelor party) until 707 and the Kim of it all, where he gets some color until 709 when we see him having that release of feeling moment with Shannon's ghost with the white shirt, he's mostly in black, he is in white/off-white on the dates with Marisol, but it is still technically no color.

Then in 710 we see him in 4 different outfits, 2 blue ones, a maroon one and a green one.

A while back I tried to offer the possibility that the show is using maroon for Eddie in the same way they use green for Buck (you can read more about this here) and I also have this running theory that the thing Eddie is chasing is color.

When you look at Eddie's relationships after Shannon died, the women aren't really allowed color, unless the context is attached to Christopher. It was worse for Marisol than it is for Ana, Ana was allowed some baby blue shirts, Marisol was trapped in a greyscale, except for the chaperoning date and the lunch Eddie was daydreaming Shannon.

But why is he chasing color? Shannon had a very bright and warm color palette.

And when contrasted with Eddie's earthy tones, that color attached to her stands out. The show goes as far as making Shannon a point of color in the room during 213. The orange she's wearing makes her stand out. And I think in some weird metaphorical way, Eddie has been looking for that since she died.

I have a running theory that the same way Buck found his blue during his coming out arc, everything about it is blue and yellow, but Buck himself is blue, all leading to the coming out scene, because the blue he is wearing there makes for an extremely harmonic composition. (you can read more about that theory here and about the blue and yellow in general here and here)

But to make a really long theory short, considering the colors in the coming out scene and the way that Buck matches the background, and Eddie is front of a yellow background while in a color that absorbs all colors and doesn't allow him to reflect anything, I am making the jump that Eddie is gonna find his yellow.

But here's the thing, yellow is attached to tragedy in Eddie's life through the people he loves. Shannon died in yellow, Chris is in yellow during the tsunami, during the breakdown and when he leaves.

So, it's not like the warmth he's seeking here has a great connotation when it's detached from him, but if the goal here is to make him okay with himself, to lead him to a place where Eddie is the yellow, could have some fun color theory implications.

But how did I get here? Because of the white in 709 and party hats. First the white. A few noticeable moments Eddie is wearing white is in 218 when his parents try to convince him to go back to Texas, 301 when he drops Chris off with Buck before the tsunami, in 511 before the breakdown, and in 709 when he's talking to Shannon's ghost through Kim.

And when you think about white as a color of innocence or hope, and the way the show puts Eddie in white as shit hits the fan, the use of white with Eddie is very interesting in this context too. Because these are all situations where Eddie is in a bad place and thinks he's doing the right thing that eventually leads to something awful, so the white leaves that positive connotation of "I hope I'm doing the right thing" straight into the coldness, emptiness, isolation idea. White is used a lot as a color of change, to signify the ending of a cycle or the beginning of a new one, it's why some cultures have white as a color for births, some have for funeral, why we use it at new years, so I think the white in 709 was kickstarting something.

And the hats, or maybe more than the hats.

I talked about this with @dangerpronebuddie but I never made a post about this possibility because it is a bit of a reach even by my own standards. We established Buck found his blue.

Chris is red, in a sense, his glasses are red, his crutches are red, the color Eddie picks for his party is red. (Buck is also very red when it comes to emotionally vulnerable moments, but that's not really relevant right now lol)

Eddie is greenish in general. I feel like a lot of us associate him with army green and it would make sense. But green is not a primary color. Not unless you are talking about physics and light.

Red, blue, yellow. Chris is the red, Buck is the blue. And I think on some level, Shannon's death is the yellow. Things that define the way Eddie lives his life. But, well, he can't exist as a secondary color.

Okay, but what does this have to do with party hats?

He is in 2 colors that have red as a base, orange and a very reddish brown, a representation of the thing he misses, while also learning into someone else who's red.

Because it is interesting to break down that orange into the base colors Eddie is trying to make up for, the fact that he cannot give Chris Shannon back or get Chris to come back. Especially with the way Buck is red and he's trying to make up for the space Chris left.

All of this to say, I think there's some real intense color theory going around here, because the cupcakes were a combination of blue, yellow, red and orange, and we saw Ryan in what's presumably an sandy yellow Eddie outfit. And I think he will work towards some sort of honey/gold yellow as he finds himself, to mirror the colors of Buck's coming out scene.

Finished all eight episodes and well, that was underwhelming. Here are my main impressions.

Clothing was too clean and looked like it came out of a cosplayer's closet instead of being actual, lived-in clothes (if there's one thing the failed movie did right, it was the clothes)

Zuko was decent

Sokka had an a+ personality but was missing some nuance

The Sokka and Suki meeting was boring and had typical teen romance cliches galore

Appa and Momo were cute

Not sure how I felt about them starting with 100 years ago, and the cut between that time and the present day was jarring, I feel like the title card should've been there instead to break it up. And just the title card, none of that weirdly glowly, oddly-colored narrative with the bending examples and stuff, it looked so odd

If Katara were a spice, she'd be flour, if she were a book, she'd be two books, where the heck was her fire and spunk and generally just. differentiating traits because I didn't see any and it was so boring to watch her

Like honestly! She didn't have her motherly/parental role thing going on, even in a toned-down way, and she was missing her passion, I just. What else is left

Bumi was scary af man

Lots of the compositing was blurry as shit and it was distracting, probably a lot of newbie, abused comp artists with pay cuts given dneg was working on it

Aang revealing himself all mystically with the intense music, then two seconds later the music stops and he slides down on the ice with a thump made me lol, and I don't think that was the intended reaction

They're in the arctic and you can't see anyone's breath, why is that, tell me

Suki removes her makeup in like 2.4 seconds without missing a single bit of it, teach me your ways gurll

Momo is actually cute and not a demon, praise raava

The fire nation armor is pretty brutal, the shoulder pads are like obvious cardboard that isn't even trying to look like metal (I still can't really tell if it's supposed to be metal? That's not a good thing fam)

Way too much exposition and 'telling, not showing', some of the convos dragged on for wayyy too long

The fox thing was unnecessary, but I liked Yue's added motivation to help Aang as well as her people

What the f did they do to Azula, the foundations of her character are totally different from the og show and she barely even feels like a villain. Some of her lines about being inadequate or 'not good enough' felt really contrived too

Lots of strange cuts and camera work, more than a few times there was a person talking and the camera was looking at their waist or something else for no reason lol, and there wasn't an establishing shot when there needed to be, so things were just disorientating a lot of the time

Lots of things happened but the show just. didn't give any time for them to marinate. Sokka telling Aang he abandoned his people, he knew it, blah blah in one of the early episodes? It's poignant but it lasts like five seconds before the scene totally changes, I got major whiplash, fam

The lion roaring sound effect every time someone firebent, please stop I beg

Azula being defiant was interesting and the lightning scene was cool but I still miss Daddy's Pet Azula

Sokka screaming on Appa was funny

My favourite scene was probably the dude going 'but we're the forty-first!' and Iroh telling them, 'and you're all alive because of his sacrifice'. Like dang that hit hard and I loved it. I liked how they added that

Avatar Roku was like ?? um. I know he and Sozin were goofballs but cmon man

The shots with Koh capturing Sokka and Katara were cheesy as shit especially with the sound effects lmao, it looked like horror movie jumpscares from a b-movie

Some of the acting was hammier than a ham sandwich. Even Zhao gave me that impression at times especially with the dang spirit fish scene

Pippinpaddleopsicopolis the third

I know they had to condense a crap ton of episodes, but it really felt like the show was just checking off boxes at times instead of (like I said earlier) letting anything marinate

The opening scene with the earthbending and firebending was cool, it's a shame the rest of the show didn't live up to that

The bending vfx looked good. The choreography did feel a bit disconnected though, and not as martial arty as I would've liked

I felt like I could blatantly see some of the reasons the og creators left the show

Grumps tbh I'd give it like 4/10.

THIRTY ONE

very happy with this years inktober. i ended up doing a lot of stuff straight up out of order cause that was the only way for me to get it in it time, and i think hat was the right choice. its very confusing but helped me work on what i wanted to instead of feeling obligated to do x on x day. definitely doing a lot of pose studies this year helped..ive just beeen drawing people and being like "dang that looks good since when could i do that"

goes for environments as well.. in the past i used to be a charas only guy, now i'm really into foliage. i love drawing plants. on 29 actually had a more zoomed in, complex steve riding a strider but i changed it to have all the focus on the environment, not just because i didnt like the original sketch, but because i knew i liked the compositoin and i wanted to have fun drawing it.

i think getting a big chisel sharpie also let me have more fun with the colors....."colors." i got to have just, really huge fields of black and white which made for some banger compositions like in the outisders one. overall ive used a lot less hatching since i feel like it can look muddy, plus it takes mf forever with so little benefit. i did use my super huge dry sharpie as an airbrush a lot tho. its really hard to control but looks so good when you get it right. plus it dries out the more you use it sooo

i think some of the compositions are janked up though. lot of times i didn't have enough hours in the day to make a good idea so mine was totally skewed or something.

for this one i was really interested in the idea of something being broken apart, too ripe, sort of the idea of gore but in a plant which is cool to me. originally it was on a vine but that was too hard to draw ooop. while i was working on it im really glad i noticed that in one of my refs, the shadow space behind the pumpkin guts looked like a mouth.. so i tried to lean into that making it look both gorey and screaming. which i think i achieved !i think i could have made some more guts but it sells itself pretty well. im also proud of the shading

i guess thats another thing i did relating to the crosshating, i tried to use a lot more really solid blacks for cellshading instead of something more subtle

another another thing i did is copy a lot more from refs.. hasnt been bad yet !!

Does Grim prefer any gendered compliments based on form or just takes any, any time? Cause just thinkin their chitin is very pretty. Like a beautiful beetle (bugs are good okay this is a good compliment!) or freshly cooled magma (of an unknown specific mineral composition cause dang uniformly nice color!)

AJ ruminated briefly and then nodded her head. “Y'all done been right so far. It really do look like you was havin' fun. So what's it take fur me ta start that, what you calls it? Saddle Arabian dancin'?”

Kin held out her arms and answered, “It starts right here, AJ.”

As AJ nestled into Kin's light hug, she snorted, “Lots o things start here with you, Kin! All good ones, now Ah gots m' head on right. Thanks fur what Ah already done got.”

By the time that she was done speaking, Kin was done too.

As she was finishing with donning her dancing dress, she did a luxurious stretch. “Dang! Rare, you made this here? It even fits mah big ol' upper deck!” She had put on the stockings and dance slippers as if she had done it all her life.

“So, what's we do first?”

Pinkie clattered her zills and then pointed to Kin. “Just follow her lead, AJ! It really is like remembering something that you never knew before! You will see!”

Just like Rarity and Pinkie before her, as she followed Kin's starting position, a look of complete understanding settled on her face. As the music began, she started both her zills and her hip lifting steps like she was born doing them. In fact, she had her tail into the act without coaching of any sort. With her hips, lower back and tail all moving smoothly in the precise sort of movements demanded by the dance, she got a thoughtful look, ears forward in both interest and concentration, lips pursed slightly, she began both shoulder lifts counter to hips, and the shimmying of her amazing tits all at once!

Without stopping any of it, she stepped into a spin, flaring her skirts out in an almost horizontal river of colors! She slowed her spin and ended with one leg out of her skirts, knee bent, only the tip of her hoof touching the floor. The other leg was also flexed some, allowing the hip lifts to continue as she began a series of belly rolls.

She broke into another spin, in the opposite direction and suddenly she was swirling the front half of her skirt in front of her! She came to a pause, still undulating to the music as she peeked mischievously over the top of the veil! In front, it only hung as far down as the tops of her stockings! She swooped the veil in an eyecatching set of swirls while her tail matched the movements of the veil in front!

All was done so smoothly and with such attention snagging motion that it took a second to realize that her magnificent mamaries were now both nearly bare, framed by active fringes and sparkling coins!

She undulated back into motion, her boobs now actively bouncing in time to shoulder lifts as she passed through several arched poses, the better to show off her body.

Pinkie was watching in utterly floored admiration. She whispered to Rarity, “If she does much more of that, my tail is going to be too stiff to use in dancing!”

Kin was dancing along with AJ but letting the tan mare have the moment, being the star, as it were. And there was more!

AJ went back to hip lifting, butt shaking, tail swirling, breast shimmying action for a little and did another dancing spin, her skirt lifting and then rising up in her hands! She entered into another set of dazzling veil work, swooping it high and low and spinning about! When she let it fly, she was dancing in nothing but a garter belt, hose slippers and a sexy frame about her tits!

With a serene expression, she slowed her dance without stopping it, coming to face the front door as Kin's magic opened it on Foamy, Clarice, Princess Twilight, Princess Luna and Princess Celestia!

With a chuckle, Luna commented, “We all peeked at the window! Not how it's done in Saddle Arabia! I like your way far better!”

Celestia snickered, “We came here for a briefing on Kin. Looks like there is a lot that I want to learn!”

Foamy was simply demanding, “We have to see that again, maybe several times, so that we can figure out the choreography! Pinkie! Why did you hold out on us! This HAS to go into the show!

Clarice was just a bit more thoughtful as she said, “I don't think that Pinkie was holding out on us, Foamy.” She extended a finger at Kin and added, “THERE is the epicenter of this ponyquake! And my Celestia, were they shaking!”

Pinkie nodded, “She sure is! None of us but her even knew what a zill was or any step of these dances! She fixed that! Only took a couple of minutes for each of us and after that, it's like remembering the dance steps and reflexes. Only takes a few minutes to get it all to kick in.”

Princess Twilight nodded thoughtfully. “I have been keeping track of your rehearsals and I don't believe that you are using my two side stages, are you?”

Pinkie, brow furrowed, answered, “Nope. Not big enough for the set pieces and I was trying to keep the focus forward, to the main stage.”

“I see. May I suggest to the producer, two Saddle Arabian dancing mares on each side between the big sets? Put concession stands at each end of the side stages. That is already set up with kitchen access. If you are worried about music conflict, sound isolation is a simple and basic spell. I use it a lot around the palace.”

Pinkie nodded, “That could work out really well. We would have to train a number of dancers, but if I know them, our problem will be too many wanting in on it.

“Thing I don't know is if any of the music is legal. Copyright can be a bitch.”

Kin offered, “The music that I know is all traditional. I last heard any of it over a thousand years ago. I am pretty sure that it is safe.”

Celestia stirred the conversational pot a little more by asking, “Foamy, Clarice, it is lovely to see you guys again but why did you leave the Royal Ballet?”

“My foal Barrel Racer was sick. Needed the horsepital. Impre told me to get him a bottle of chest lineament and I could have a day off at half pay. Any more days would be at no pay.

“I was born over near Bleatin Hallow and had friends in Ponyville. Some of them were dancers at Ponys At Night. The mares raised half of what Racer needed for the horsepital. The owners of the club found out and put up the rest. I even got a free place to stay while Racer got better.

“To say thank you, I scored them some strip dances and drilled them for it. Got to say, they were skeptical at first but my choreographed dances pulled in near twice as many tips. The same owners that paid Racer's horsepital bill found out about that and tried me on some other dancers. Then they put me on full time at near three times what I got from the Royal Ballet.

“I mirrored Clarice and she took a few days here, got hired and quit the Royal Ballet. We had to test some of our own choreography and wound up as Headliners. We score dances for all five of Ponyville's clubs.”

Clarice snorted, “When Foamy mirrored me, my rent had just gone up by two silver a month. Impre told me that I should quit eating so many asparagus salads, as if I could afford even one! Got a good deal here and a lot of respect from the dancers and club owners too.”

Hi! I just wanted to say, thank you so much for making the Red & Wolf comic. I just found it by accident and read through the whole thing in one night, I am seriously loving it so far. I'm autistic and I've always had a strong interest in wolves, specifically Little Red Riding Hood versions of wolves, and always wanted to read a story about the wolf having a sort of redemption or it being more than just "big bad wolf is evil and wants to eat the girl". There's hardly any content for me to dive into in regards of even just the fairytale itself, most stories are very gruesome, the short films online are incredibly dark and uncomfortable since those are the adaptations of the original grimm telling, or all of the red riding hood movies are horror films instead of fairytale adaptations. Or some sort of like... idk love triangle thing where it's all modernized or something for televesion where Red is wearing jeans and the Wolf isn't even a real wolf? But yours... this is like finding gold. I was hooked immediately and I couldn't stop reading.

Your story of Scarlett and Leikos... it's just so gorgeous, your art work has such clean lines and the way you draw eyes and hands especially is so beautiful. The design for Leikos' hair is my favorite!! Just... the vulnerability of these two growing closer, like... augh clutching my heart when Leikos is like "no don't cross the path you're gonna get hurt :(" and she's like "but I want to dance with you :)" like!!! she trusts him and he refuses to hurt her even when instincts kick in!! HIS BACKSTORY? BRO? I'M IN SHAMBLES?? Ugh your art is so GOOD and this STORY is so GOOD and I am just so thankful to be able to dive into a Wolf/Red story that has action, romance, suspense, all the good stuff. It's so perfect.

Thank you for working so so hard to make this comic. I'm an artist as well and I could never have the patience to upload one comic page, let alone several. Laying out panels is difficult and time consuming and not to mention you're shading and coloring the entire thing. Your poses are always fluid, never stiff, you have good perspective and composition, most ppl who make comics can easily just draw one single pose and one facial expression for 20 panels, but you've always had the expressions and body language shift and change and the camera view as well... and you gotta draw all those damn trees omfg. The flower meadow in the first chapter must have taken forever to draw too! Your hard work really shows in your art and I am so happy to have stumbled upon your comic. If you make any more merch for Red & Wolf on your Etsy, whether it's prints or charms or stickers or really anything, I would be more than willing to throw some money your way.
