I haven't seen anyone talk about how all of the characters turned into "puppets" in arcane season 2 that we see are disabled people or those who are addicted to shimmer... it really feels like people are just glossing over that. ESPECIALLY given almost all the disabled characters in Arcane die or are in that situation Jinx is in. What do you think?
It does feel kinda iffy I will say. The whole bit with Viktor and his whole "achieving glorious revolution" is that it's a symptom of his internalized ableism. I think it was always partially there, perhaps more as a response to how Piltover treats disabled characters and a quiet, silent longing that would only surface in darker times, but it became more noticeable as time progressed and he eventually "cured" himself of his illness AND limp by injecting shimmer into himself. That whole process was more akin to rotting himself from the inside out and that boat scene is a false victory but I digress. I wouldn't have too terribly large amount of problems with this even if it is the whole "magically healing disabled character" trope since it didn't come from a place of internalized ableism so much as his degenerative disease is killing him and he wants it gone. From there though he then starts going way downhill. He wanted to then begin curing people of their ailments and disabilities. It's a quality of his character that is also present in his LoL counterpart, where he again believes that ascending beyond human form and shedding your weak flesh is the only way to live (but now I guess Arcane Viktor is canon now). He was always kinda destined to be a disabled character who eventually becomes a villain
The thing is that Viktor does indeed only heal disabled characters. I recall a character from a scene early on who was presented in a wheelchair, only for them to be shown later as being without it and walking just fine. Shimmer addicts will go directly to him and be healed and regrouped. The vibe of it that the show gives off is that Viktor is helping and healing these people who are hurting and need to be cured which....beeughhhh...... Like the show doesn't exactly frame the commune as being iffy outside of that one scene in E5 where Vitkor is possessing Salo and then being fully bad and evil when Viktor goes off the wall and starts fully converting people to weird puppet mannequin things
The thing that bothers me is mainly that the show never really discusses nor talks about Viktor as in he's in a bad light for this only to disabled characters nor is it questioned whether or not to give those people accommodations as opposed to fully curing them. It kinda waved it off as being a product of his internalized ableism at the very end, but it's certainly not an overt theme. It's certainly giving off the vibes of "Yayayayy yayaay Viktor is helping the poor disabled people but NOOOO now he's EVILLL because he wants them to be erased of everything and become mindless puppets!!" while is more of a lame outlook for the show for me
The thing with Viktor in S1 was that his disability was thematically tied to how Zaun is oppressed by Piltover (namely in how it caused his disability by the Grey)(Grey? Gray? I never know how to spell it because I'm not American). Viktor's narrative was deeply woven in how he's managed to claw his way out of Zaun and reach the highest of Piltover, yet still manages to be seen as little more than a filthy Zaunite. This is displayed in scenes like where Mel, Jayce, and Viktor talk about turning Hextech into weaponry, something Viktor is staunchly against both as a caring man who loves life and as a Zaunite himself. When he tries to voice his complaints, Mel talks down to him. It's both a scene where Mel shows that she knows that Viktor is far less easy to manipulate, yet also thematically relevant as a metaphor for Piltover's higher class looking down on Zaun AND as political discussion for how able-bodied people dismiss disabled people immediately. They do not see them as being things to be concerned about. Making Hextech into a weapon for destruction would without a doubt lead to the suffering of Zaunites, especially those already ravenged by disability. They do not care, as they see their suffering as a means to keep to keep them silent and obedient
What I'm saying is that S1's writing with disability used to be better. Sure, some characters like Sevika namely have Magical Badass Prosthetic Arm Syndrome, where her arm (especially in S2) is mainly treated as a cool ass weapon than like...a proper prosthetic. I wish it was focused on more as an actual prosthetic outside of it being destroyed twice. It's still got the usual hallmarks of disability being used for cosmetic purposes (ex: Jinx's finger). But Viktor used to actually mean something before primarily just fucking off and turning into a husk of who he was character-wise and then becoming mega evil
If S2 was more coherently written, I think it would be called out more that Viktor is doing this as a symptom of his belief that disabled people need to be cured now as well as a result from Piltover leaving disabled Zaunites to fend for themselves. It shoves addicts to the depths of the area and leaves the disabled hurting and in pain without any accommodations. Viktor instead is only seen as bad in like a cartoon villain way where he gets carried away with his whole wanting to achieve glorious evolution and at the veerrrryyy end the show goes "btw this is about internalized ableism didn't you know?" without putting the effort or anything to actually display it
The majority of Zaun is disabled. They simply are. They're mentally or physically disabled, traumatized by the sheer horrors that Piltover has put them through. I think the problems arose when the story became less about Piltover and how it denies Zaun of everything and more took a "well both sides are bad!!" approach, ultimately making Viktor's narrative about how internalized ableism corrupts and destroyed muddled and not exactly spectacular. They needed a sensitivity reader or something for this season god

thinking about a parallel universe where furries with big useless bappy paws exist IRL, but so does that one dumbass apple mouse that has no buttons, a charging port on the bottom, and a shape that is extremely uncomfortable to use if you have normal adult human hands

After 30 years of searching for his lost brother through demonic rituals and summonings, Ford has become a bit of a notorious demon collector over the years. He's made a LOT of deals with MANY different demons over the years; from minor and harmless little entities to big and powerful overlords. Most of the time, these deals aren't really a one-way situation, so a lot of demons have a strong grip on him just as much as he does on them. It often ends up being a mutual sort of destruction, as in: "I know I'm but a mere mortal trifling with things I couldn't begin to fathom, and I know you will destroy me eventually; but I don't care as long as I get to destroy you too." He just needs to live long enough to find his brother.
The red hands are essentially pieces of himself (his soul, you could say??) that he wields as his method of restraint to the demons he has "tamed" so far. They act as a leash to contain each demons' powers, and he can loosen or tighten his hold on them as much as he wants. The number of hands required to contain a demon really depends on their individual strengths, but 3-4 hands are already very energy consuming.
YES, I gave all of his demons stupid names. SUE ME.

i cannot stress this enough: if your reasoning for clowning on the mcu is "they overwork their cg artists and animators" i 1000% guarantee that a show or movie you have been stanning for years also abused their artists and you just haven't heard about it because the production companies aren't in the spotlight like mcu productions are. that cartoon for kids? that incredibly animated movie? that non-marvel superhero movie? i've seen people declare their hatred for the way the mcu treats their workers and then turn around and gush about a show that i know for a fact was hell for the artists attached
and no this is NOT me saying "this means you should stop hating on the mcu uwu" it's me saying you gotta be aware that this shit is an INDUSTRY WIDE PROBLEM. you CANNOT "fix" it by refusing to watch mcu movies and feeling good about it. you have to be aware that it's EVERYWHERE. why do you think so many animation and vfx productions are sourced in canada? in india and the phillipines? we are not unionized.
i know it's hard to face the idea that your favourite show might have been made unethically especially when you've spent so much time hating the mcu for doing the same thing. you don't have to start hating your favourite show. just like...be aware. don't be smarmy about it. don't claim without research that a beautifully animated movie Must mean the animators were not working 16 hour days and weekends. i do think we can fix this 👍 but we can't fix it if 90% of us don't even realize what the problem really is

if yall ever want like serious advice from me about how to solve burnout as a creative it's like...
literally ignore it. stop pushing. go do something else, enjoy your life, fill it with other things, do what brings you joy in the moment if you can.
go to the gym, take a walk to touch grass and look at dogs and smell flowers, cook dinner, watch tv with your friends, talk about your feelings as needed with ppl you trust, take a drive and blast your music, do the chores you need to do, the job hunting slog you need to do, read books that aren't for research, stop cordoning off your brain for The Craft or The Draft or whatever the fuck
forget about the project, stop thinking about it for as long as it takes to be excited again.
fuckin rest, basically

I have had these thoughts bubbling away in my head for like...eighteen months or so now (it will become very obvious why shortly) but the discussion in this post has pushed me to write them down: I think societally we HUGELY underestimate how motherhood for primary caregivers, particularly first-time motherhood, can be a source of vulnerability to radicalisation.
There is obviously huge cultural variance here, but for a lot of cis women becoming primary caregiver to an infant in a capitalist Western society represents a time of immense vulnerability because in general you are:
Incredibly sleep-deprived (which has well-documented knock-on effects for your judgement, mental health, etc)
If you gave birth, recovering from a significant challenge to your physical health (even in the best-case scenario)
Isolated from your previous networks and communities of people in full-time work
Completely separated from the context of your prior career goals and achievements
Under huge amounts of stress to learn how to care for an infant (don't get me started on breastfeeding)
And on top of this, you are also be experiencing a huge amount of messaging about how all this is natural, wonderful, something you're meant to do, something you should love doing, and something that you must do for the welfare of their child. It's a huge amount of pressure and life change even when everything goes right and there's very little cultural space to express negative feelings about it.
Any group of people who offer community, support, and affirmation to cis women in this situation are going to have a really good shot at radicalising them into some very weird and dangerous headspaces and in fact we see this happen all the time - think antivaxxers and TERFs. It flies under the radar because of the hazy positive glow that associates with motherhood and babies and also because we don't take the radicalisation of women seriously I guess because they rarely shoot anybody, but...yeah. It is such a vulnerable time!

A guy who just wake up from a coma -> what did i miss?
Pomefiore was the last plot i follow before real life made me forget about our silly boys. How bad has the plot become now for our gang? Also who is that Gojo looking guy?
anon, I am so sorry and I mean this in the best way, but I do think episode 5 is the absolute funniest place to have stopped following Twst because shit starts escalating SO fast after that. episode 6 literally starts with a secret government shadow agency breaking down our doors and kidnapping students. zero to a million instantly.

and like...that's not even the zaniest thing so far? Ortho's hacked into the collective human unconscious. there's time travel (sort of). "Crowley might be Malleus' long-lost father" is a serious theory. if you'd told me any of this back pre-episode 6, I would have asked for the link to this unbelievable but highly intriguing fanfic.
also, episode 7 gave us (and then immediately took away 😔) the best character in the whole story:

I am begging people to be normal about completed fics, and in particular one shots.
I am begging people to stop demanding more from authors, and insisting that one shots need to be longer or have sequels.
I don't think yall understand how many fanfic authors are one more "where's the rest of it?" comment away from throwing out any plans they might have had to continue an idea.
Unless an author like specifically says they might write more for an idea, just-- assume something marked as completed is complete, and respect it as it stands, please.

being in pet owner groups sucks because you can be like “my dog is reactive due to past negative experiences with other dogs” and someone with a dog named Woodchips that’s eaten three floorboards and part of an interior wall and is a threat to society will tell you how you’ve failed to manage your dog and clearly you don’t understand training 💕

i think honestly the craziest thing abt transmisogyny isn't like the active moments of hate but the complete unwillingness and uninterest in anything we have to say — this assumption that if a trans woman is talking it's not worth your time and you can just scroll past. and then you'll have fuck terfs in your bio like nothing happened! wild
