I have a Gale in the closet
Well, here you have my baptism in the world of words (WoW?), after years without writing. It is a short story, just over 1000 words. I hope you like it 😊
(The Spanish version is also available. If anyone is interested in the 'original version', please write to me.)
Thanks a lot @senualothbrok for being my wonderful beta reader.
Tumblr media
I have a Gale in the closet.
The door is closed, but I can still feel his now-empty puppy-dog eyes, begging me not to turn him off. I can't see him, but I know he's there every time I walk past the door. I get the feeling that the door is going to open at any moment and his hand is going to pop out anxiously, asking for help, like when he came out of that portal at the beginning of the game. But his hand doesn't come out. He doesn't make a sound. There he is, inert, dull, gathering dust.
“What are you doing with that old thing in there?” my friends ask me. “Throw it away, it's taking up space. The new models out there do everything! Mine even gives me a Thai massage every night.  You should try it.”
Gale2024 has long since gone out of fashion. The poor boy had accumulated quite a few bugs during all these years of service. There were hardly any technical premises with parts to repair him. He showed the first symptoms some time ago: he stopped making croquettes. The béchamel recipe program was corrupted and there was no way to restore it. I didn't think it was important. I could live without croquettes and if not, I could always get the frozen ones from the supermarket. But he was still as tender and affectionate as the first day he saw me and recognised me as his TAV (True Amorous Vessel). Many years had passed since that moment.
I had already listened to his lectures on arcane magic a thousand times. I could recite them from memory, word for word, if I put my mind to it. He had always been such a chatterbox. There wasn't a moment when he didn't bring up a topic of conversation. It was a pity when he could no longer keep up to date with the news, with all the  literature, science and technology websites he liked. He would always find some interesting news that he would enthusiastically explain to me, down to the last detail. That was a hard blow for him.
But he didn't give up. He began to pick up the few paper books he could find, and with an archaic OCR programme he managed to read what was written, pitifully. It wasn't perfect, and noticeably slower than downloading GBytes of information directly from the net, but it was something. And it kept him going. Watching him turn the pages of those antique tomes was like looking at a vintage postcard, not without a certain charm. Afterwards, he would share those old stories with me. He looked like a granny. He even put his glasses on the tip of his nose and imitated the worn-out voice of an octogenarian to liven up the peroration. He used to make me laugh.
Now he doesn't say a word.
He was always so attentive and kind. Many people soon got bored of Gales and started to provoke them or even ‘mistreat’ them, as much as you can mistreat a being who feels no pain. Or at least that's what they said. Although I know he did feel it. Many Gales ended up mangled and mutilated in the most varied ways. All to see how far he could take it, what his limit was, what he could do or endure for his TAV. Human beings do not deserve such goodness.
In my defense, I will say that I gave mine a kind ‘life’. Or at least that's what I like to believe. Of course, he also had to put up with my grumpy days and my blue days. But he was always there for me. Patient. Supportive. Listening. Sometimes you don't need much more.
On the other hand, there were many good moments of joy and laughter. We enjoyed the time together as if each day was a new opportunity to celebrate life (or almost ‘life’). There were times when I doubted whether he was really a human person. He was certainly much more ‘human’ than many humans I know. But reality always comes through, like the sword of Damocles, swinging over our head, threatening. Little by little his technology was becoming outdated. New models appeared, with better finishes, with more features. Until they discontinued Gale and stopped updating him.
I didn't care. I didn't need more features. He was already everything to me and more than I could ever hope for. What I needed. What I wanted.
One day, coming home from work, I found him looking out of the window, pensive. He was watching the people passing by, the new models chatting with their humans. He was so absorbed that he didn't hear me approaching. Noticing my presence, hugging him from behind, he turned to me. I had never noticed that expression on him before.
'Are you going to trade me for one of those? I don't see Gales on the streets anymore,’ he said, his eyes glazed over.
'Never.'
I hugged him tight. Well, as tightly as you can hug an android. He responded with his gentle embrace, full of love and fear. He was trembling. I had never seen him like that.
***
My psychologist says it's good for me to write these things down, that it's not good to depend so much on machines, that I have to relate more to humans. The truth is that I miss him a lot.
The day of the disconnection was horrible. Already his deterioration was flagrant. His mobility was erratic, his knees failed him often, and he was falling and hurting himself more. His speech was defective. He could barely focus on the letters in books, making it impossible for him to read. The only thing that remained intact was his unconditional love for me, for his TAV.
I took him to several technical services and the only option they offered me was a complete formatting of his memory together with the replacement of the personality module. That was to alleviate the software problems.  The hardware ones... that was another story.
'Am I going to die?'
'Androids don't die, my love.´ I said, trying to comfort him with a bitter smile.
Everyone had told me what to do. I knew what I had to do. It was so heartbreaking to see him like that. How he would fall, how he would struggle to get to his feet, how he would crawl. How he would try to chat and lose the thread of the conversation.
There was a little red button on the back of his neck hidden in the root of his hair. The beginning and the end. Something so simple, but so painful at the same time....
I gave him a last hug and, in tears, my hand slid to the back of his neck. At that moment, he looked at me and I saw in his eyes that he was aware of what was about to happen. He tried a plea or a thank you, or both, as the energy left him, leaving that body immobile, rigid, inert.
***
I have a Gale in the closet. Now I'm in it too. A little red button on the back of his neck makes his eyes come alive again. I hug him, and he hugs me back with his sweet embrace. “You are all I could ever want in this life. I want nothing more. I need nothing more. I'll be here with you forever.”

First conceptualized by The Lucky One’s Jung Jisoo in 2020, gathering trainees to form a group with a “global’ look, the group soon to be titled SLASH performed in their first showcase in late 2021. The first rendition of the lineup consisted of Chinese Neverland contestant Zheng Hui, company nepo-baby Na Sebastian, the ever ambitious Sasha Flores, and dazzling Thai trainee Lalita Suwannathat. Marketed as Lucky’s little siblings, their unique concept and captivating performance generated excitement for the group.
Tumblr media
The buzz only continued to grow as cryptic posters began appearing around Seoul, featuring QR codes directing curious viewers to an almost empty website only showing largely blacked out and blurred profiles of each member and a link to an Instagram account, @ bloodyvalentine, which infrequently posted behind the scenes film photos of the trainees with no captions but their names in a hashtag.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The building anticipation only made Jung Jisoo more ambitious, adding trainees Spencer Shu-Bellamy, Shin Doa, and Freddie Ahn (now known as BAM!’s Kiho) to the lineup to make it a 7-piece group. Teasers and posters only increased in frequency leading up to October 2022, when they were originally set to debut according to Prismatic’s leaked plans for the quarter.
Tumblr media
However, 1 week before their set debut date, Lalita suffered a debilitating ACL injury in practice. Rather than allow the group to debut without her, the debut was delayed altogether. Many argue that Lalita received special treatment from Jisoo and the group’s management, and was intended to be the star of the group.
The group lay in limbo from that point on, waiting for Lalita to fully recover from her injury and a new debut date to be set. Within this time Sasha appeared on HYBE’s Dream Academy, barely being edged out of the final debut group while Hui appeared on Boys Planet 999 placing 8th and becoming an official member of ZEROBASEONE, exiting the trainee group to make his debut.
Suddenly a 6-piece unit, a new debut date was finally set for January of 2024, nearly 2 years after their original debut date, before the sudden acquisition of BAM! and other Sixth Sense Media trainees. In the quick and unexpected turnaround for the group’s debut, SLASH once again suffered the loss of a member and the postponement of their debut date. However, beginning to face pressure from both the members of the trainee group and their families, the company sent the group to America to continue training in a new environment and act as a distraction as they attempt to gather their resources. Two trainees were added to fill out the lineup; longtime trainee, Neverland contestant, and budding producer Chase Park, and Hwang Taebin newly acquired from Sixth Sense.
Tumblr media
The 7 trainees lived in a beach-side condo in Los Angeles as they continued their training in renowned dance academies and vocal studios. The Instagram was still posting the trainees lives behind the scenes, although just as cryptic as ever. A new teaser video was posted to once again generate buzz surrounding the group and satiate the members and those backing them. However, one member would not return from America. The bloodyvalentine account inexplicably stopped posting photos of Lalita after her face took up a majority of the account’s feed previously.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Many believed that she simply left the unpredictable group setting to pursue her own ambitions, but an unknown source within Prismatic Entertainment leaked information regarding the alleged true nature of her disappearance to a forum of SLASH fans who have been around since the very beginning. According to this source, Lalita left a note in the group’s condo one night stating that she was tired of the purgatory of trainee life and ran away to experience freedom traveling across America. She has not been heard from since. The source also noted that her family planned to take legal action against Prismatic citing negligence.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Despite this, SLASH seems to finally be getting the debut that has been dangled in front of them for years, set to debut once again in late August 2024. After such turmoil and so many unanswered questions, SLASH’s future still remains shrouded in mystery. Will they be able to make it passed all of the struggles that may weigh them down?

The reason why I'm sure this Taennie thing is PR is because Elle and Billboard news had pieces ready to go about the rumours based upon an unconfirmed Tiktok / IG reel.
Vogue couldn't even get Lisa's name right on an article and put Jennie's name instead... Suddenly Lisa, who's a Celine and Bulgari ambassador and probably the most famous Thai woman in the world, isn't important enough to be named properly ? But apparently random paparazzi reels of Taennie are important enough to be spread as overnight news?
And for the 'other members are dating too' anon. Well if Taennie apparently are so careless that they do lovestagrams, wear matching clothes, post photos together online AND have photos of their supposed relationship splashed all over the internet and on Western websites, you really think there's not a single tabloid that wouldn't dig into Tae and Jennie's lives in SK? There's not just Dispatch y'know. Taehyung antis tried to make Joanna Chun happen from a bunch of coincidences, you think if they had real compromising evidence they wouldn't take advantage of this to splash it all over DC gallery?
This whole Taennie narrative is very controlled and it's only Kpop stans that can't see that.
Hi anon!
Very insightful!
I think Kpop fans are so confused, because they haven’t seen this before. I have an anon in my inbox claiming this doesn’t happen in SK, well.. times are changing and Kpop is going more and more the western side. Both BTS and BlackPink do extremely well all around the world. Why wouldn’t they adapt some of their marketing tactics? But also, just because it’s never been noticed, doesn’t mean it’s never happened before. Pr relationships do not limit themselves to romances, there’s also pr platonic friendships. Celebrities duo’s who are publicly said to be best friends, but are they? All businesses use some form of pr and marketing, it’s just that the levels at which they play differ in intensity.

Reblogging to add things I've learnt transcribing images of text (only on laptop though) and describing images:
If you right-click on an onscreen image while on Google Chrome – you can search for that image, and Google will automatically recognize the text contained in it (including other language fonts, like Thai, Chinese, Tamil, Korean, Japanese, etc.). You can select the text and copy it directly using Google, which means you can also tidy it up and format it in MS Word, or even in Tumblr directly before posting.
If you right-click somewhere on the screen that is not part of the image, you can draw a window over the part of the image (or anything else onscreen) to let Google know you want it to search for what's specifically in the window, which is useful for transcribing only the text part of an image. (To draw the window, click and hold down the mouse button, then drag to open a window over any text you want Google to search for and/or transcribe.)
Doing either of the above means you can go directly from screen to text without needing to save the image and uploading it into an OCR website.
Sometimes if a post has many reblogs, I often try scanning through the reblog list to see if anyone else has already described it. If there is already a described version, I'll leave a like for the person who reblogged the (undescribed) post on my dash, but then go on reblog the described version instead. The time this saves can be put to use describing other posts. Of course, scanning the reblogs in the notes is tedious, so I'll only spend a minute or so doing that, less if time is pressing.
If you can't find an already described version of a post by scanning the reblogs, you can also search for it by pasting any transcribed and copied text into a Google search. You can then reblog any described version that Google finds. It's surprising how successful Google can be at this. (This only saves formatting time since you already have the text transcribed and copied, but to me that's the tedious bit and I try to avoid it if I can.)
Transcribing and searching for textposts this way is especially useful for tracking down Twitter posts that were put on Tumblr as images. You can then copy the text directly from the source (useful for long threads on Twitter). If I'm not up to it, I will link directly to Twitter by pasting the tweet's URL into Tumblr, whereupon the link will automatically appear as an image with ALT text (in dashboard view). This also attributes the source of the text, which is the correct thing to do anyway.
If I can find the Twitter post, I like to add the UTC time and date of of the post as well, so that it is anchored in time. The time and date on a Twitter post is your local time and date, so I usually ask Google what the time and date would be in UTC.
When typing out a Twitter handle, I use a zero width non-joiner after the '@' so that Tumblr does not automatically turn it into a link, which sometimes happens.
When typing out timestamps and dates, it's better to keep certain blocks of text together for better legibility. For example, you don't want Tumblr to break up '3:00PM UTC', with '3:00PM' at the end of a line and 'UTC' at the beginning of the next line. Nor do you want '5 April 2024' to be broken up as '5 April' on a different line from '2024'. To prevent this, replace the original spaces with no-break spaces.
To keep hyphenated words together, use the non-breaking hyphen instead.
I think the Internet may be divided on this, but if an image already has ALT text I prefer to leave it undescribed in the blog text. I read somewhere that folks who use a text-to-speech reader find having both ALT text and the image description in the blog text to be highly annoying, because they have to listen to essentially the same thing twice.
How to Keep Doing Descriptions (from someone who does a fuckton)
Plain text: How to Keep Doing Descriptions (from someone who does a fuckton)
This is a list aimed mostly at helping people who already write IDs; for guides at learning how to do them yourself, check my accessibility and image description tags! I write this with close to two years of experience with IDs and chronic pain :)
Get used to writing some IDs by using both your phone and your computer, if you can! I find it easier to type long-form on my laptop, so I set up videos and long comics on my phone, which I then prop up against my laptop screen so I can easily reference the post without constantly scrolling or turning my head
I will never stop plugging onlineocr.net. I use it to ID everything from six-word tags to screenshots of long posts to even comic dialogue! On that last note, convertcase.net can convert text between all-caps, lowercase, sentence case, and title case, which is super helpful
Limit the number of drafts/posts-to-be-described you save. No, seriously. I never go above 10 undescribed drafts on any of my four blogs. It doesn’t have to be that low, but this has done wonders (italics: wonders) for my productivity and willingness to write IDs. If I ever get above that limit, even if it’s two or three more, I immediately either describe the lowest-effort post or purge some, and if I can’t do that then I stop saving things to drafts no matter what. No exceptions! Sticking to this will make your life so much easier and less stressful
My pinned post has a link to a community doc of meme description templates!
Ask! For! Help! Please welcome to the stage the People’s Accessibility Server! It’s full of lovely people and organized into channels where you can request/volunteer descriptions and ask/answer questions
I make great use of voice-to-text and glide typing on my phone to save my hands some effort!
Something is always better than nothing!!! A short two-sentence or one-sentence ID is better than no ID at all. Take it easy :)
If you feel guilty about being unable to reblog amazing but undescribed art, try getting into the habit of replying to OP’s post to let them know you liked it! This makes me feel less pressured to ID absolutely everything I see
This is a sillier one, but I tag posts I describe as “described” and “described by me.” When saving to drafts, I never preemptively tag with “described by me,” since for some reason that always makes me feel extra pressure and extra stress. Consider doing something similar for yourself if that applies!
I frequently find myself looking at pieces of art which feel like they need to be considered for a bit before I can write an ID for them, and those usually get thrown into drafts, where the dread for writing a comprehensive ID just builds. Don’t do that! Instead, try just staying in the reblog field for a bit and focus on the most relevant aspects of the piece. Marinate on them for a little; don’t rush, but don’t spend more than a handful of seconds either. I find after that the art becomes way easier to describe than it initially seemed!
On that note, look for shortcuts that make IDs less taxing for you to do! For example, I only ever describe clothes in art if they’re relevant to the piece; not doing that every time saves a lot of time and energy for me personally
Building off of that, consider excusing yourself from a particular kind of ID if you want to. Give yourself a free pass for 4chan posts, or fanart by an artist who does really good but really complex comics, whatever. Let it be someone else’s responsibility and feel twice as proud about the work that you can now allot more energy to!
As always, make an effort to find and follow fellow describers! It’s always encouraging to get described posts on your dash, and I find that sometimes I’m happier to ID an undescribed post when the person who put it on my dash is a friend who tagged it with “no ID”
TL;DR: To make ID-writing less stressful and more low-effort, use different devices and software like onlineocr.net and voice-to-text, limit the amount of work you expect yourself to do, and reach out to artists and other describers!

Sweeping Vietnam internet law comes into force
Tumblr media
Bangkok
New Vietnamese internet rules requiring Facebook and TikTok to verify user identities and hand over data to authorities came into force on Wednesday, in what critics say is the latest attack on freedom of expression.
Tumblr media
Under "Decree 147", all tech giants operating in Vietnam must verify users' accounts via their phone numbers or Vietnamese identification numbers and store that information alongside their full name and date of birth.
They must provide that data to authorities on request and remove any content the government regards as "illegal" within 24 hours.
The new rules came into force on Wednesday, state media VNExpress said.
All social media sites had been given 90 days to provide data on "the total number of regular visits from Vietnam" and the number of regular users per month to authorities, the website said.
Tumblr media
"Decree 147 will be used to publicly suppress those with different viewpoints," said activist Dang Thi Hue, who writes about politics and social issues on her Facebook account, which has 28,000 followers.
The decree was "the latest sign of infringement of basic freedoms... with a vague line between what is legal and what is not," said former political prisoner Le Anh Hung.
"No one wants to go to jail, so of course some activists will be more cautious and afraid of this decree."
Vietnam's hardline administration generally moves swiftly to stamp out dissent and arrest critics, especially those who find an audience on social media.
Tumblr media
In October, blogger Duong Van Thai -- who had almost 120,000 followers on YouTube, where he regularly recorded livestreams critical of the government -- was jailed for 12 years on charges of publishing anti-state information.
Decree 147 builds on a 2018 cybersecurity law that was sharply criticised by the United States, European Union and internet freedom advocates who said it mimics China's repressive censorship of the internet.
The decree also says that only verified accounts can livestream, impacting the exploding number of people earning a living through social commerce on sites such as TikTok.
Aside from the ramifications for social media firms, the new laws also include curbs on gaming for under-18s, designed to prevent addiction.
Tumblr media
Game publishers are expected to enforce a time limit of an hour per game session and not more than 180 minutes a day for all games.
Just over half of Vietnam's 100 million population regularly plays such games, says data research firm Newzoo.
A large proportion of the population is also on social media, with the Ministry of Information and Communications estimating the country has around 65 million Facebook users, 60 million on YouTube and 20 million on TikTok.
Tumblr media
The force of the decree was yet to be felt at a small online gaming cafe in capital Hanoi, where around a dozen young people were glued to their desktop screens.
"I don't know anything about a time limit for the games," said one 15-year-old boy who said he had skipped class to come and play. "I just keep playing, and as you see, it still works."
Tumblr media
"I never have to show an ID or student card to enter a game shop or for my game account online. I don't know how (the decree) will work, let's see."
The owner of the cafe, who charges around 30 cents for an hour of gaming, was similarly nonchalant.
"I have no idea what this decree is about. I don't know if it will work or not. My business is still going normally. They pay and we let them use the desktop for their gaming. It's simple."

Learn the SECRET HACKS to See the World on a Shoestring BUDGET
Tumblr media
Traveling the world is often painted as a luxury reserved for the wealthy, but what if I told you it’s within reach—even on a tight budget? With a few insider secrets and strategic planning, you can unlock the door to globe-trotting adventures without draining your bank account. From finding cheap flights to saving on accommodation, here are the ultimate hacks to make your dream of world travel a reality.
1. Be Flexible with Your Plans
The number one rule for budget travel? Flexibility is your best friend.
Dates Matter: Flight prices can vary dramatically depending on the day of the week or time of year. Use tools like Google Flights or Skyscanner in order to find the lowest cost when booking flights.
Destination Deals: Instead of fixating on a specific location, let deals guide you. Apps like Hopper and websites like Scott’s Cheap Flights highlight low fares to destinations worldwide.
Pro Tip: Use the "Everywhere" search feature on Skyscanner to discover affordable destinations you may not have considered.
2. Leverage Points and Miles
Credit card points and airline miles are the holy grail of budget travel.
Sign up for travel rewards credit cards that will reward you with significant welcome offers. After completing the minimum spending requirements, cards such as Chase Sapphire Preferred or American Express Platinum could give you sufficient points for a free flight or hotel stay.
Use apps like AwardWallet to track your points and make the most of loyalty programs.
Pro Tip: Even if you’re not a frequent flyer, many cards allow you to rack up points through everyday purchases.
3. Embrace Alternative Accommodation
Hotels are great, but they’re not always the most budget-friendly option.
Hostels: Modern hostels provide individual rooms, community kitchens, and social settings at a fraction of the cost of a hotel. Check out websites like Hostelworld for options.
Airbnb and Short-Term Rentals: Renting a room or an apartment can save you money, especially for longer stays or when traveling with a group.
House-Sitting: Platforms like TrustedHousesitters connect you with homeowners looking for someone to care for their property while they’re away. It’s free accommodation with a dash of responsibility.
Pro Tip: Consider couchsurfing for a truly budget-friendly (and often culturally enriching) experience.
4. Eat Like a Local
Dining out could use up quite a bit of your cash, but there are ways to enjoy local food without going overboard.
Street Food: In many countries, street food is delicious, authentic, and incredibly cheap. Think pad Thai in Bangkok or tacos in Mexico City.
Local Markets: Stock up on fresh produce, bread, and snacks from local markets.
Cook Your Own Meals: If your lodging includes a kitchen, preparing part of your meals can help you save money.
Pro Tip: Treat yourself to one fancy meal at a local restaurant and balance it with budget-friendly dining the rest of the time.

5. Master the Art of Cheap Transportation
Getting around doesn’t have to break the bank.
Public Transit: Learn the local bus, metro, or train system—it’s almost always cheaper than taxis or rideshares.
Walk or Bike: Exploring a city on foot or by bike not only saves money but also lets you soak in the sights.
Discount Passes: Many cities offer passes for unlimited travel on public transit for a set number of days.
Pro Tip: Use apps like Rome2Rio to find the most cost-effective way to travel between destinations.
6. Travel During Shoulder Seasons
Peak travel times mean peak prices. Instead, aim for the "shoulder season," the period right before or after peak season.
Airfare and lodgings are less expensive, there aren't as many visitors, and the weather remains pleasant.
For example, visit Europe in late September or early October instead of the summer months.
Pro Tip: Research shoulder seasons for your destination to find the sweet spot between affordability and enjoyable conditions.
7. Say Yes to Free Experiences
Not every memorable travel moment has to come with a price tag.
Free Walking Tours: Many towns provide free walking tours guided by experienced residents. (Remember to tip your guide!)
Museums and Attractions: Some museums have free admission days, and many parks, beaches, and landmarks are completely free to explore.
Cultural Events: Look for festivals, parades, or live performances happening during your visit.
Pro Tip: Check out Meetup or Couchsurfing events for free gatherings where you can mingle with locals and other travelers.
8. Pack Smart to Avoid Extra Costs
Overpacking can lead to unnecessary expenses, from checked baggage fees to buying forgotten essentials.
To avoid baggage costs, travel with only carry-on luggage.
Pack versatile clothing that can be layered and worn multiple times.
Bring a reusable water bottle, travel adapter, and other essentials to avoid last-minute purchases.
Pro Tip: Learn how to do laundry on the go—handwashing in the sink can extend your wardrobe without adding weight to your suitcase.
9. Work While You Wander
Budget travel doesn’t mean draining your savings—earning money as you travel can keep your adventure going longer.
Teach English online or abroad.
Freelance in writing, graphic design, or other skills.
Volunteer in exchange for accommodation through programs like Workaway or WWOOF.
Pro Tip: Digital nomad visas are available in several countries, allowing you to legally work remotely while traveling.
10. Stay One Step Ahead with Travel Apps
Technology is a traveler’s best friend. Download apps to find deals, navigate cities, and manage your itinerary.
Skyscanner and Google Flights for airfare.
Booking.com and Airbnb for accommodations.
XE Currency for real-time exchange rates.
Pro Tip: Use VPNs to access region-specific deals on flights and accommodations.
Start Your Adventure
Traveling the world on a budget isn’t just possible—it’s exhilarating. By staying flexible, planning smart, and embracing the art of frugality, you can turn your travel dreams into a reality without sacrificing quality experiences.
Remember, the journey is as much about the memories you create as the money you save. So, pack your bags, hit the road, and discover just how far your budget can take you.
