Before the Bat Family, before the Justice League, Batman’s partner and ally was James Gordon
Tumblr media
One thing that the Batman: Telltale games made me appreciate more is the relationship between Batman and Commissioner James Gordon.
During the Dark Knight’s early years, Jim was one of the few allies he had. Their shared sense of justice and morality was what brought them together. Batman respects Jim for his determination to uphold the law and admires his work as a cop. Despite the man’s initial reluctance to work with him, he progressively gained Gordon’s trust as well.
Their partnership further solidified itself over the years. While there were still some at the GCPD who mistrusted or hated Batman, Jim always stood up for him, even when the odds were against him. Despite the vigilante’s unorthodox methods and overall appearance, Jim trusted him to get the job done. In his eyes, Batman, regardless of the man behind the mask, was someone who was willing to go out every night to protect the city and its citizens. Jim voices this belief when he fervently defends Batman against Amanda Waller, who knows his partner’s secret identity:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jim understands Batman completely, and remains steadfast and loyal towards him. Knowing who Batman is as a person matters more to him than knowing the person who is Batman.
This is why I think their dynamic is such a fundamental part of Batman’s story. Their partnership, as well as their mutual friendship adds to the complex layers of the character.

What if Telltale’s Batman characters played Life Is Strange? (Sorry couldn’t resist asking this ghfkfhf)
Bruce - Bruce takes the game WAY to seriously. In a moment of a calm where Max is peacefully sitting against a tree he's like "How can you rest when Nathan is still on the loose?! You need to focus on making sure he doesn't hurt anyone else ever again!" He's also the one character I'm 100% sure would sacrifice Chloe. Batman's whole thing is wanting to save the city, I think he'd project his feelings about Gotham onto Arcadia Bay.
John - I feel like he'd get super attached to Max and Chloe's bond. I actually think he'd be the biggest Pricefield stan out of any of the characters, and side with Chloe for....all of the choices, honestly. I also think he'd taken by the lighthouse, and how it guides Max throughout the story. I feel like that would be the thing he really does a lot of analyze on. Also, he'd figure out the Mark Jefferson plot twist like...five minutes in. He's deductive like that.
Harley - She would play the game for two minutes, get bored from the lack of violence, and then immediately be drawn back in when Nathan talks about blowing up the school. I feel like she'd end up liking the game despite how mostly "quiet" it is, as there's a lot to psychoanalyze from every character. I think she'd find that aspect interesting.
Selina - She gets more attached to Max than she would have expected. What can she say, she relates to a women who likes to go through other people's things. She ends up enjoying the game a lot, though it does cause her more emotional distress than she'll ever admit. Especially because she likes Chloe a lot.
Tiffany - She's SUPER into the investigation portions of the game. She might be the only person who kinda sorta enjoyed finding the bottles and doing the clue board. She also sacrifices Arcadia Bay, and she is a hardcore "Bae over Bay" defender.
Alfred - Alfred would play a little and then decide that A: This game is geared toward people far younger than him. B: He doesn't need to play any more of it because Bruce puts enough stress in his life. He can't be worrying about fate of video game characters as well.
Amanda Waller - She has the most strategic and analytical playthrough you've ever seen. Her every decision is methodical, which is why she's disappointed that Max acts like a teenage girl instead of a manipulative, jaded, secret agent. (However, she is intrigued by the mystery elements more than she wants to admits.)

in no particular order of reasons why i despise batman the telltale series season 2 the enemy within:
(spoilers lol)
if bruce decides to remain batman, alfred quits his job and LEAVES GOTHAM. that's not alfred. that's an impostor.
the riddler only shows up for a single episode before getting killed off
they kill off the real GOAT, the real MVP: lucius fox : (
jokerharley, but make it REVERSED. joker is a lovestruck dweeb now. harley is abusive now.
the joker is there. yes, that's enough of a reason, bc i hate him.
after all the juicy reveals from the previous season irt the waynes, suddenly it just doesn't matter anymore and everyone's just fine with bruce wayne and wayne enterprises again.
they didn't make bane hot : (
everyone is so fucking underdeveloped. un-fleshed out. backstoryless.
matt mercer is there for like... 10 minutes. also, he voices mister freeze. bad casting.
they thinwashed amanda waller : (
still not even a mention of scarecrow, and hush, and black mask-
they kill off regina zellerbach : (
still not even a mention of the court of owls
where's vicki vale? good question! you will never know <3

A prologue of sorts:
There’s a man in her office, uninvited. Amanda Waller doesn’t have uninvited visitors. It’s one benefit of her office being located in the heart of one of the most secure prisons in the world. She doesn’t let the presence of the stranger startle her though, as she straightens the cuffs of her blazer. The other benefit to running a max security facility is that nothing surprised her anymore.
As she steps into the stark room, she amends her first assumption. There’s a boy in her office, slumped against the arm of one of the stiff black leather chairs. He can’t be more than 18. He doesn’t stir as she walks around her desk. Her finger hovers over the emergency switch in her pocket.
She knows every inmate in this facility. Knows their face, their story, their capabilities. This boy is not one of hers, has never been. So what the hell was he doing here? There had been no alarm raised, no warning. So either he was a misguided hero, a new emissary of the board (unlikely, given his whole deal, but appearances could be deceiving), or he’d somehow broken in to Belle Reve.
No option was comforting.
Waller sits behind her desk and folds her hands in front of her. Here she felt more comfortable, with two panic buttons and three pistols in quick reach. But she wouldn’t relax until she thoroughly catalogued the unknown sitting in front of her.
As she sat he looked up at her through a mop of shaggy black hair. His clothes were similarly shabby- travel worn and filthy. He looked gaunt. Defeated. Haunted. But there was a sharpness to his cold blue eyes as he studied her face, sizing her up the same as she was to him now.
She lets her silence ask her questions for her.
Predictably, he speaks a moment later.
“It doesn’t work.” His voice is scratchy with under use. She doesn’t understand what he’s talking about till he tugs a finger under the collar on his neck.
A power dampening collar. One issued only to inmates. The light on it glows green- active.
“I assure you the system is entirely functional.” Of that she’s certain. All hell would be breaking loose if it wasn’t.
“Then why isn’t it working for me?”
“Are you certain it isn’t?”
“How else would I have gotten in here?”
She doesn’t like the strain in his voice, the hint of desperation. He hasn’t been hostile yet, but she knows how quickly that can change with the people that come through her door.
“Why don’t you tell me why you’re here.”
“This is where they lock up people who have dangerous powers, right?”
“That’s one way of putting it, yes.”
“Well.” He sighs. “Here I am.”
“Is this a confession? Have you committed a crime?”
“No. Well, not yet.” He looks askance, eyes losing that sharp focus in favor of a haunted sheen. “But I could.”
“Look kid. I jail criminals. I’m not running a free housing program. I’m not putting you away for something you haven’t done.”
“I broke in here though. Doesn’t that count?”
“I do want to know how you did that. But even so, it’s hardly a reason to put you here with—“
“Please.”
He stands abruptly. Just as quick, her pistol is out and pointed at the center of his chest.
He looks so young with the surprise on his face.
“Here’s what’s going to happen. First you’re going to tell me how you got in here. Then you’re going to give me my collar back. And then you’re going to get the hell out of my prison until and if your ass gets sent back here for real.”
“Okay. Okay.” The surprise is gone, replaced with a calculated stillness.
It happens fast. First, a flick of his wrist and her gun hand is encased in ice. Then he takes two strides toward her- through the desk like it wasn’t there- and plucks the pistol from her grip. Then he vanishes, and she would have believed herself alone if she didn’t feel the telltale pressure of a gun to her temple.
“That’s how I got in.” His voice is steady. She keeps her breathing even. The panic button under the desk is inches from her fingertips.
Then the pistol lands with a thunk on the desk next to her. The kid reappears, leaning against the side.
He taps the collar again. The collar that should have prevented that whole little display. “Like I said. Doesn’t work.”
She studies him. He looks tired. But if that show of power wasn’t a fluke, she could be looking at the strongest meta Belle Reve has ever seen.
And as of right now, nobody but her knows about him.
“Tell me. Why do you think you belong in Belle Reve?”
“I’m capable of terrible things. I’ve seen it. I don’t- I can’t trust myself. In here I can’t hurt anyone. Or, well, at least you would try to stop me.”
She looks at him and sees a pathetic helpless child. She looks at him and sees a powerful, one of a kind asset.
She makes a decision.
“What’s your name?”
“Danny.”
“Alright Danny. I’ll let you stay in my prison. Under one condition,” she says, “You answer to only me. Your situation is unique, but don’t expect special treatment from anyone. Nobody else can know about this arrangement.”
Her hand comes to rest on the gun on the desk between them.
“But most importantly- I ask you to do something and you do it. No questions. Do that and I promise I will keep you safe.”
She looks at him. Poor stupid kid. If she plays her cards right (and she always does) he will be a spectacular pawn.
He looks back at her with something like relief. His shoulders sag.
“Do we have an agreement?”
He meets her eyes. Still tired. Still defeated. But, perhaps, most notably, completely devoid of any fear.
He might prove to be even more interesting yet.
“Deal.”
Danny’s on the Suicide Squad. He’s the defacto team moral compass and ray of sunshine. He plays the role of the camp counselor that keeps everyone in line. He’s not afraid of working with even the gnarliest of baddies.
Everybody on the team wonders how he ended up locked up with the villains- he never talks about what he did to end up behind bars no matter how much they pester him. Then one day they’re out on a mission and Harley or somebody is caught and tortured. Danny snaps. It’s the opposite of brutal- he takes down everyone in the room with clinical, dispassionate efficiency.
After it’s over and the team is safe he comes back to himself and is almost sheepish. He radios Belle Reve.
“Whoops. Add another couple notches on my power dampener collar, would you Waller?”
“Can’t, it’s already at max.”
“Ah. Well. I’ll have a look at strengthening it when we’re back then.”
The team just stared at him slack jawed. Good thing he’s on their side.

I stg sometimes the vigilante route makes no sense because if John's "known issue" was holding grudges. Why didn't he hold a grudge against Harley???? He barely acknowledged her existence in the entire Episode??? He hated Riddler but didn't kill him.
(I know Riddler implied that John was supposed to alert the Pact about his plans but didn't. Therefore letting him get arrested. But I honestly think that was retconned cuz it was never explained later. You didn't even have the option to ask John about that.)
Even after that John didn't interact with Riddler's Corpse at all so... no pettiness there.
I know Waller tried to Shoot him, but John legit doesn't care about getting hurt. Willy tried to stab him and they're still freinds in the Vigilante route. Harley gave him a black eye and he still has Mad Love for her in the Villain Route. Don't even get me started on Bruce.
I think they realized DC Comics would be pissed if The Joker actually became an ally/sidekick for Batman, -
[Look up Gotham's Joker/ The Valeska Twins debacle TLDR: DC flat out refused to let Gotham have the rights to the name Joker so they had spend the entire show calling the Proto-Joker something else. DC can be very weirdly stringent with their characters]
and/or they didn't want to write a season 3 with John as a sidekick. So, they gave him a crappy reason to "go insane" and decided that Waller was the only person who could send John back to Arkham.
TLDR
So basically what I'm saying is, John was acting OOC during the Vigilante Route. I will die on this hill, bite me Telltale Games. I know I'm right cuz I've done the Vigilante Route 100 times and it still feels contrived.

This was also the plot of Telltale Batman Season 2 in the first episode. Riddler provided Batman with a puzzle box that turns into a record vinyl disc, and after the recording played, the disc started creating a "signal pulse".
Bruce gave it to Lucius to figure out, which ended in his death by explosion. Batman later finds out that its a homing beacon for missiles, and Lucius had been hit. He also found a list of phone numbers belonging to Amanda Waller's agents, and put together that Riddler was going to call each individual agent and play that sound on the other end to lure the missiles to them.
Idk how many medias have this exact plot, but i do love it. I just hope it doesn't get overused.

Amanda Waller is very interesting character. Confident, cunning, and an iron will. But also ruthless. So so ruthless. Can't wait to learn more about her.
