It's A Treasure Hunt
For many years, we were taught that in early societies, men were the hunters and women the gatherers. It made some logical sense, given the strength disparity between us. It also fit in nicely with religious narratives that delineate gender-based roles. Cue the mental imagery of strong men hurling spears, and docile women picking berries.
But that old assumption has increasingly been debunked of late, with studies showing that in those early societies, most women hunted too. Gathering, it turns out, was left for those unable to hunt, which could just as well have included some men, especially the elderly. Labor specialization was more important in the evolution of humans than prescribed roles.
And there is perhaps no better place to see female hunting instincts and acumen than at TJ Maxx and its family stores (TJX Companies, Inc. $117.48). The company sells name-brand merchandise at bargain prices, with a constantly changing array of items on racks and shelves. In other words, each visit is different, and you better visit often, lest you miss out on the really good stuff.
TJ Maxx reports that 93% of its customers are women, who are equally likely to shop for the men in their lives. That doesn’t mean that men cannot shop there; it’s just that we will be a distinct minority.
While it would be easy to describe the TJX experience as the thrill of the hunt, the company prefers to view it as a treasure hunt. And at a time while “trading down” because of inflation often conjures images of highly distressed merchandise, TJ Maxx manages to attract customers from low, middle, and upper income strata alike. This is not Ross or Burlington, nor Big Lots and Ollie’s, the latter two of which leave me feeling like I need to bathe after departing.
That’s golden for TJX, because their stores have cachet. You don’t shop there because you have to. No, you shop there because you want to.
To their great credit, TJ Maxx keeps the most desirable brand names off its website. This helps insure there is no dilution for those brands; you have to find them in-store, and what you find, you get to wear or carry with all the badge value you would have accrued had you bought it at Macy’s or Dillards. If they put everything online, then everyone could see that bag, dress, or shoes, and where you got them.
This works well for both TJ Maxx and its vendors, many of whom post-COVID found themselves with inventory out of kilter as they scrambled to over-order in hopes of averting supply chain issues. The result was that many ended up with too much inventory, and TJ Maxx was more than happy to help liquidate it.
The company didn’t start out this way, though, as it once acted like its main competitors, where you go to find blemished products, manufacturer over-runs, or last season’s flops. Those competitors still retain that look and feel. TJ Maxx, though, has cleaned up its act considerably, erasing those memories of cluttered shops with garments and other merchandise strewn haphazardly. Turns out you can merchandise those treasures a lot better, and laugh about it all the way to the bank.
My wife will serve as Case Study #1. Her two favorite stores are TJ Maxx and HomeGoods, and she loves going early to have first crack at whatever had been stocked overnight. It’s the early bird thing all over again, but she ain’t shopping for worms. The thrill of the hunt is just as much an adrenaline rush for her and other women, as are other activities for the guys.
It’s about this time I realize that my love for grocery shopping—like my Dad the Accountant before me—really means I am just a gatherer. I’m not hunting at Walmart; no, I am replenishing all the things that have been consumed. I may as well be picking berries and putting them in a basket. That mental image is little different from me pushing a shopping cart.
It’s funny sometimes how our old stereotypes and assumptions are shattered with new evidence. It’s even better when a company can leverage this to great profit. If I—or you—had bought their stock at the beginning of the year, we would be enjoying a growth rate of about 26%. Not bad for a little less than 10 months.
I’d like to gather some of that kind of wealth.

As someone who used to work at Marshalls (one of TJ Maxx's sister chains, for those who don't know), and who is also autistic? I would have also rethought my purchase. And then sent an email to corporate HQ explaining why Autism Speaks is not an organization worth supporting.
I just got asked if I wanted to donate to Autism Speaks at checkout at T. J. Maxx. I instantly rethought my purchase. My reaction shocked the poor cashier. I'm sure she had no idea what Autism Speaks actually does. She also had no idea that I am autistic.

4 Trade Ideas for TJX: Bonus Idea
TJX, $TJX, comes into the week at an all-time high. It is also pressing to the top of a short term consolidation zone over the past 2 weeks. The Bollinger Bands® have squeezed over June and are now opening higher. There is a short term Measured Move on a break higher targeting 114 as a starting point. The RSI is strong and slightly overbought in the bullish zone with the MACD leveling after a reset lower in the positive range. There is no resistance above 111.75. Support lower sits at 110 and 107. Short interest is low at 1.3%. The stock pays a dividend with an annual yield of 1.34% and will start to trade ex-dividend on August 15th.
The company is expected to report earnings next on August 21st. The July options chain shows the biggest open interest at the 105 strike on the put side. On the call side it is biggest at 110 then 105. The August chain has biggest open interest at the 110 put strike and the 120 call. The August 23 Expiry, covering the earnings report, gives no information as the is 1 contract in open interest (not a misprint). The September chain has its biggest open interest at the 110 and 105 put strikes and the 115 and 125 call.
TJX, Ticker: TJX
Trade Idea 1: Buy the stock on a move over 112 with a stop at 109.
Trade Idea 2: Buy the stock on a move over 112 and add an August 23 Expiry 109/102 Put Spread ($1.60) while selling the September 120 Call ($1.02).
Trade Idea 3: Buy the August/September 115 Call Calendar ($1.55) while selling the August 105 Put (42 cents).
Trade Idea 4: Buy the August 105/115/120 Call Spread Risk Reversal (50 cents).

After reviewing over 1,000 charts, I have found some good setups for the week. These were selected and should be viewed in the context of the broad Market Macro picture reviewed Friday which with the first week of July in the books, saw equity markets showing strength from the large cap and tech focused S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100, but continued churn from the small caps.
Elsewhere look for Gold to continue its consolidation in the uptrend while Crude Oil consolidates in a tightening range. The US Dollar Index continues to drift to the downside in consolidation while US Treasuries move lower in their downtrend. The Shanghai Composite looks to continue the short term move lower while Emerging Markets remain in broad consolidation.
The Volatility Index looks to remain very low and stable making the path easier for equity markets to the upside. The charts of the SPY and QQQ look strong, especially on the longer timeframe. On the shorter timeframe both the QQQ and SPY have reset momentum measures and both are also looking strong upon reversing. The IWM continues to be dead money, going on 30 months now. Use this information as you prepare for the coming week and trad’em well.

So I fucked up my elbow earlier by banging it into a pole really hard, and then about 20 minutes later had a panic attack while up on register and had to slip away while there were still customers in line because I started crying and spent 10 minutes in the bathroom sobbing.
Fun day it’s been.
#i feel a lot better now#but i can not keep doing this#either i’m going to have to be taken off register completely#or i think i’m going to have to leave this job#i love the merchandising (provided it’s not insanely busy and i’m not struggling to make room on the floor)#but the customer interactions are incredibly stressful#i know it’s like that anywhere#but other stores aren’t quite as bad#tjx is notoriously bad#up there with walmart

I think Meghan’s frustrated because her level has some pretty popular people already. It’s crowded. To be honest I think the Gaines have a large % followed by a few other target brands. She’d rather be a target brand not a tjmaxx because tjmaxx buys left over inventory that doesn’t sell. Target is still affordable and I think those in her circle are far more willingly to say they go to target than Walmart to tjmaxx. That’s what bothers her.
I also don’t think she was prepared to launch when she did. It was a quick rash reaction that felt more like turning lover an “I’m open for business sign” than anything else. Her ego got the best of her .
Yep, that's the other pitfall of being so focused on immediate gratification: you have beer goggles on. You don't see your competitors for who they really are - you only see what they have that you don't or their flaws that you think you can do better.
If Meghan really cared about Roop, she'd have paid attention to the market research that her partners (and yes, she has partners, even if no one will admit it) and WME did. That market research would have told her exactly who her competitors are, that she has one shot to get this right, and precisely what shot to take and when to take it.
And let's be honest. Her competitors aren't Gwyneth Paltrow (Goop), Reese Witherspoon (Kohls), and Martha Stewart (Macys, Penneys, and Amazon). They aren't even the Gaines/Magnolia (Target), Pioneer Woman (Walmart), and Rae Dunn (TJ Maxx/HomeGoods).
Her competitors are all the other socialites out there launching their own wellness and lifestyle brands. Bravolebrities. Tiktokers. Instagram influencers. People who have such a niche fanbase from 5 minutes in the spotlight with print-on-demand merch. In effect, personality-driven brands that lack substance.
And those brands don't usually do well, because they always overshoot their market and target the wrong audience. There's nothing wrong with being a TJX brand or a department store brand or a "Middle America" brand. Plenty of people have made really good fortunes and livings from it, but only because they were realistic and clear about their expectations and knew it would take time to get the empire they wanted.
And since anon mentioned The Gaines, I have a feeling that's who Meghan intends to come after. They're in Texas (where the Sussexes have been spending time). Tall, leggy, thick-bouncy-dark brown/black hair-for-days, biracial homemaker guru wife with a doofus goofy ginger husband. Their brand (Magnolia Home) is a kind of rustic, vintage, comfort memory that ARO/Roop's video mimicked. They've got that kind of ordinary everyday Americanness that (kind of) competes with William and Kate's kind of ordinary everyday Britishness that Meghan couldn't break.
But here's the thing about Chip and Joanna. They didn't just pop up out of nowhere. I know it feels like they did, but they didn't. They put 10 years of blood and sweat equity into the Waco (Texas) home construction and design world before HGTV even knew that they existed. What has Meghan done that's even comparable? Sure, she got her own doofus ginger but that's it. That's where the comparisons end. And honestly there's no comparison between Chip and Harry either, because Chip comes out ahead by a million points by just being able to replace his own burnt-out lightbulb.

The next time you walk into a T.J. Maxx, Marshalls or HomeGoods, you may notice something different about some employees that you'd typically only see on police officers: body cameras.
John Klinger is CFO of TJX, which owns and operates the retail chains, and he said on a company earnings call last month that workers at some stores in the U.S. will start being equipped with body cameras. He said the move is an effort to combat shrink — a term used to describe losses in inventory from things like shoplifting and theft.
"When somebody comes in, it's sort of, it's almost like a de-escalation where people are less likely to do something when they're being videotaped," Klinger said.
He added that while TJX is "highly focused" on addressing shrink, the company is also looking at how to "balance protecting the goods with making sure that the customers can shop easily ... while also maintaining safety in our stores."
TJX isn't the only retail company looking to use video surveillance as a way to combat theft. According to a 2023 survey conducted by the National Retail Federation, more than 1 in 3 (35%) major retailers in the U.S. said they were considering the implementation of employee-worn body cameras.
In addition, 11% of survey respondents said they had already begun testing the technology in their stores.

After reviewing over 1,000 charts, I have found some good setups for the week. These were selected and should be viewed in the context of the broad Market Macro picture reviewed Friday which with the March FOMC meeting in the books, saw equity markets showed strength moving higher despite the continued tone of rates staying higher for longer.
Elsewhere look for Gold to continue its consolidation in a bull flag at the highs while Crude Oil continues the messy uptrend. The US Dollar Index looks to drift to the upside in consolidation while US Treasuries consolidate in their downtrend. The Shanghai Composite looks to continue the short term uptrend while Emerging Markets consolidate in a broad range.
The Volatility Index looks to remain very low and stable making the path easier for equity markets to the upside. Their charts look strong, especially on the longer timeframe with the SPY at a weekly high and the IWM and QQQ consolidating the recent moves higher. On the shorter timeframe both the QQQ and SPY also look strong making fresh all-time highs Thursday before dropping toward filling gaps Friday on profit taking. The IWM looks to have established a higher range. Use this information as you prepare for the coming week and trad’em well.

I see you have some pretty big stuff, so can I ask the best way to conceal if I were trying to get a comforter set?
I would just throw it in a tote bag or just walk out with it in my arm.. ( also know your timing )
also to note in my area, the bedding section might have one camera or none. I just turn muly back towards the cam and conceal on the spot and pick another one off the shelf at the same ,then i turn around towards the camera and put it down showing I change my mind. If that make sense.
Do your research or scope out the area. I listed a few stores by difficultly. Easy to hard. IKEA is very stupid easy if u don't want to conceal it just toss it over the gate and walk to the other side and recover the item.
EASY
IKEA , the bay ,crate and barre and l Barnes and noble and winners tjx depending on your area.
