Avelin isn't meant to get so close to the action.
He's never the man on the front line, never the one locked in enemy sights-- a side effect of his nature, harder to pin down than the breeze itself. He keeps himself back, avoids making himself a target, and when tables turn, he's the first to cut and run.
He's always prioritized self-preservation, no matter whose side he leaves behind in doing so.
So then, why is he close enough now to smell the burnt flesh of Alwin's arms, bite wounds scorched into cauterized scarring by the flames of the root hounds' jaws? Why is he close enough to see the tearstained faces of the family ushered out from the cottage on which Ankita perches, eyes fixed upon the smoldering horizon as something lumbers closer, sending tremors through the earth beneath them?
A mighty creeeeeak, groan, CRACK fills his ears. The last tree standing in the way between them and whatever monstrous thing is storming towards them sways, bows, and pitches forward, just narrowly missing where Avelin stands with its collapse--
And why, in all the Hells, is he close enough to feel the shower of sparks and embers seer across his skin when it does?
Time seems to grind to a halt as the bard finds himself bathed in the massive shadow of the creature. Its burning, vacant eyes fix upon him, the only target directly within its reach, and his stomach drops. He urges himself to breathe, to move, but he can't-- dark smoke is too thick in his lungs and his time has run out.
The corrupted titan raises an entire tree aloft in its enormous claws, like a club aimed straight for where Avelin stands. His legs go weak, his grip on his bow going slack as every song he's ever drilled into his head flees his memory. He can already feel his bones breaking, can already feel his chest caving in, and the downswing hasn't even begun--
When he hears Ankita's voice carrying from behind him. A rush of magic washes over him towards its target, taking hold in the earth beneath this monstrosity's feet. The grease spell seems to take it by surprise and its hind claws scrabble for purchase to keep it standing, but right before Avelin's eyes the spell seems to thicken. More of the magically conjured substance rises up to slick grass and stone and the twisted colossus falls.
The rest of the battle passes by in a blur of blades and arrows, but even after Alwin deals the finishing blow, after they all work together to quell the fire, even after they nearly get arrested at the city gates, Avelin is stuck back in that moment.
It's not until the group is making their way back to the Emerald Herald with the spoils of their good deed in hand does Avelin manage to form what he truly wants to say.
The bard falls into step beside the wizard, dragging one of his painted nails along the neck of his new mandolin, eyes fixed upon the grain of the wood, the gleam of the strings in the last light of day, anywhere, really, save for straight at Ankita.
" I want you to know that you were... incredible, back there. " The words aren't light, the way Avelin would usually try to make them. They weigh as much as they should, and there's no telling if he's ever meant anything he's ever said to the other man more than he means this. " I know you would have done as much if it were anyone else in my position as well, so don't think I'm reading into things. I've no illusions that you cast with my sake in mind especially, but... I also know that I'd almost certainly be dead if you hadn't. "

[ // ] Vasi's usual manner of speaking revolves around a few different things: the vernacular of Eorzea, slang she picked up from its locals ("Seven hells!" is a particular favorite of hers), formal phrasing from her time as an Immortal Flames officer, and her first language, that of the Au Ra Xaela.
[ // ] The first two parts of that list are of a rather special case, as well. Shortly after her arrival in Ul'dah, a rather charitable Elezen woman found Vasi aimlessly wandering its myriad streets, and decided to take her into her home out of fear for her safety. Between being left to the mercy of cutpurses and having nowhere to stay, the Au Ra agreed to stay with her new guardian. As it turned out, this was the same person who would later provide her with her second surname: a certain Floremence La'dair.
[ // ] For a time, it was by Floremence's teachings that Vasi came to know the essentials of Eorzean common. She also became the woman's errand girl, of a sort, which allowed her to mingle with Ul'dahn citizens and better express herself over time. Before long, her characteristic enthusiasm and shining attitude became well-known, which earned her the attention of First Sword Mylla of the Gladiator's Guild, and later on, the one and only Raubahn Aldynn.
[ // ] Nowadays, as a fully-fledged adventurer and an elite amongst Ul'dah's military, Vasi still finds some time on occasion to thank her dear 'Auntie Flora' for her services and kindness, and to send her gifts she finds on her travels. After all, language is one of many paths of discovery, and it's thanks to such generosity that she has come so far.

11th Century Greek Grammar Lesson Poem
Michael Psellos (often latinised erroneously as Psellus) was a monk, philosopher, courtier and one of the most distinguished scholars of the Byzantine Empire. Among a lot of other works, he composed a group of educational poems for young heir Michael Dukas (1050-1090), son of Emperor Constantine X Dukas, teaching him on a variety of sciences. As he notes:
«Τοῦ αὐτοῦ Ψελλοῦ Σύνοψις διὰ στίχων σαφῶν καὶ πολιτικῶν περὶ πασῶν τῶν ἐπιστημῶν γενομένη πρὸς τὸν εὐσεβέστατον βασιλέα κῦριν Μιχαὴλ τὸν Δούκαν ἐκ προστάξεως τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτοῦ καὶ βασιλέως, ὥστε διὰ τῆς εὐκολίας καὶ ἡδύτητος ἐνεχθῆναι τοῦτον εἰς τὴν μάθησιν τῶν ἐπιστημῶν.»
“Synopsis by Psellos himself in comprehensible and political (?) verses about all the sciences, made for the most devout king* Lord Michael Dukas at the command of his father and emperor*, so that he will be initiated in the study of sciences easily and with pleasure.”
*Notably Psellos uses the term βασιλεύς (Greek for “king”) for both the emperor and his heir.
This post features a poem about Greek grammar. However, it is not about the technicalities or the grammatical rules but it is instead a very brief guide to help the young heir tell the various Greek dialects apart. By Greek dialects, Psellos does not refer to the local Greek idioms that were spoken across the empire at the time. He counts five dialects: Ionic, Attic, Aeolic, Doric and Koine Greek. The first four were the main dialects spoken by the Ancient Greek tribes. The last one, Koine (Common Greek), was the lingua franca and official language of the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire, believed to have evolved from Attic specifically with some additional influences from the other ancient dialects. Psellos seems to believe that Koine is the aggregate of all previous four equally and even though he considers it "overused", he still thinks of it as superior to the ancient four.

Translation in English:
"Let grammar and dictation be your concern; that is the first foundation and basis of sciences. It is, however, not of one kind nor is it common and the same, but it comprises tongues and idioms and five dialects, Aeolic, Ionic, Attic and Doric and the usual, common and hackneyed; and each dialect has its own sounds. And the common, even though it is an aggregate of the four, it is nevertheless also of one kind, different in comparison with the others. But the five have to be shown to you by way of example. For the inflection ‘Πέρσης Πέρσεω’ happens to be from the Ionic speech (for the speech they called Iōnikè, I shall now call it for you Ias, for Ias derives from Iōn; the appellation consists of two names). As the form ‘Δημοσθένεος’ is the way in which the genitive is conveyed in Ionic as well as the form ‘Περσέων’, thus is also the form ‘νυμφέων’; but if one altered it and said ‘νυμφάων’, he spoke the Aeolic dialect, not the Ionic. But if one says ‘θάλαττα’ or ‘τεῦτλον’, he speaks Attic. But if one names in turn the Muses ‘Μῶσαι’, he speaks in the Doric fashion and talks in the Doric dialect. And the Aeolic dialect adds a beta to the rho, saying the word ‘ῥάκος’ as ‘βράκος’, the word ‘ῥυτήρ’ as ‘βρυτήρ’. But if one says ‘θάλασσα’, ‘ῥάκος’ and ‘ῥυτήρ’, he spoke the common or the most customary dialect. Follow this one alone indeed, and look down upon the others. But know this indeed and may it not escape you: many tenses are lacking in some of the verbs and also plural persons of the common dialect, but they are filled up by other dialects. This happens to be the third part of grammar, the explanation of ‘histories’ and various tongues. For each dialect comprises numerous tongues. For the Doric dialect comprises the following tongues, that of the Argives, that of the Corinthians and that of the Syracusans; and the Aeolic that of the Boeotians, but also that of the Lesbians**. The grammarian is obliged to know also the idioms, for ‘πίσυρες’ [derives] from Ionic, but [also] from the Syracusans."

Id like to compliment your hebrew song choices for translation, if youd like no criticism stop reading here and סופ״ש נעים
If you dont mind, id like to note that the approach you seem to be taking prioritises approximating a 1:1 ratio between the original lyrics and your translations rather than conveying the meaning and imagery more eloquently. I feel that a lot of the beauty of the original text is lost when you go about it like this, maybe you should read english prose to get a feel for a natural and smooth lyricsm. Much love.

second of all, you are VERY right, this is a very deliberate choice, and it has its downsided
For the monolinguals: any complicated text CANNOT be actually translated one-to-one. all translations flow between "literal text oriented" and "meaning oriented", between "original grammar following" to "translated grammar following", and how much the meter and rhymes are kept.
My favorite example is the second verse of Ecclesiastes. In hebrew it goes like this:
"הבל הבלים אמר קהלת, הבל הבלים הכל הבל"
How would you translate it?
Let's start by writing the text in english letters, so the problem is more easily shown:
Hevel Havalim amar Kohelet, Hevel Havalim haokl Hevel
Now let's tackle the easy words
Hevel Hevels said Kohelet, Hevel Hevels everything is Hevel
Now there are 3 stuff to tackle
Kohelet: it is used as a name, but most scholars agree it's a title for Solomon, meaning something like "He who gathers a crowd". should it be translated as a name or a title? maybe as the name of the book in the christian world, Ecclesiastes?
Hevel: It's a very complicated word, it represents a fleeting breath, but also fleetingness itself, and also meaninglessness itself. many choose meaningless or meaninglessness in this verse, but another verse the author calls childhood Hevel, should we believe that the author means that childhood is meaningless? maybe it should be fleeting in this context?
<x> <x>s: a hebrew expression meaning "The most something of something", for example "king of kings" would mean "The most king of the kings" or "The most important king of the kings" or "The king over all the kings". Should it be translated in the simplest way (king of kings) or with added interpretation (the king over all the kings)?
How did the official translators handle it? they didn't Here are a few options they chose:
I could continue for ages, it seems like every single translation translated these lines differently
Add to that the fact that even though I read english prose and listen to english songs, my vocubulary is obviously smaller than a mother-tongue speaker, and the choice becomes very easy
I translate as literally as I can (most of the time). I often add context in (red brackets), but no more than that. The reader can use their imagination to find the english version (or native language for a double-translation mess) they think fits the most, but I will make a very literal translation
That is with one main exceptions: phrases that mean different things in hebrew and english. for example, the hebrew לעשות חשבון does have a literal translation: doing math. but in english, doing the math means something like "adding one plus one", and not at all the hebrew meaning of "caring about what people think of you". In cases like these, I try to add a bit of interpretation, and sometimes write the original in red brackets
These are not strong rules by any means, I am doing this for fun after all, sometimes I get lazy, sometimes I forget that something is a phrase and automatically translate the meaning etc. But this is the reason
If someone else wants to go after the translations and add more interpretation so it sounds poetic, I'd be ecstatic. But to do that, I'd need to be able to write english songs and prose myself, and I am not of that level yet
If someone wants to see what that approach to translation looks like, may I recommend the amazing translation of "hallelujah" to Yiddish. it translated the meaning to Yiddish, and then the literal text to the english subtitles, showing exactly what it looks out

In Byzantine rhetoric, a basilikos logos (Greek: βασιλικòς λ��γος, literally "imperial word") or logos eis ton autokratora ("speech to the emperor") is an encomium addressed to an emperor on an important occasion, regularly at Epiphany.[1]
The parameters of the genre were first set out in a treatise attributed to Menander Rhetor of the late 3rd century. The encomiast should praise the emperor's origins, his physical beauty, his upbringing, good habits, feats in peace and victories in war, philanthropy, good fortune and practice of the four cardinal virtues. He identified the presbeutikos, a speech of supplication given by a city to an emperor, as a subgenre of the basilikos logos. The panegyric of Constantine the Great delivered by Eusebius of Caesaria established a new convention of depicting the ideal emperor rather than the actual. The Christian basilikoi logoi dropped references to good fortune (tyche) in favour of piety. The term presbeutikos also shifted in meaning to refer to an ambassador's report.[1]
The delivery of a basilikos logos could be used as an occasion to subtly advise the emperor, becoming a sort of "mirror of princes". This is the form it took when Agapetos praised Justinian I (6th century) and when Basil I his son Leo VI (9th century). The surviving biography of the Empress Theodora (9th century) may originate in a basilikos logos addressed to her during her regency.[2] John the Oxite wrote and presumably delivered an unconventional logos that was highly critical of the policies of Alexios I Komnenos (11th century).[3] Michael Italikos (12th century) wrote a logos for the Emperor John II Komnenos based primarily on his deeds and another for Manuel I Komnenos that was more conventional.[1]

Their pae poʻo (bodyboards)[24][note 1] as well as kikoʻo and alaia surfboards were made from koa; however, olo, the longest and heaviest surfboards, were made from the lighter and more buoyant wood of the wiliwili, and were used exclusively by the nobility.[25] Heiaus are Hawaiian places of worship where sacrifices were offered, they include actual temples as well as natural objects or features of the landscape. Every activity in Hawaiian culture was associated with a cult devoted to a deity or the activity itself, such as surfing. Using clinical observation, the article explores the poet syndrome hypothesis and offers direction for an alternative drug treatment paradigm. Personality disorders and particularly antisocial personality disorders (APD) are quite frequent in opioid-dependent subjects. They show various personality traits: high neuroticism, high impulsivity, higher extraversion than the general population. Previous studies have reported that some but not all personality traits improved with treatment. In a previous study, we found a low rate of APD in a French population of opioid-dependent subjects. For this reason, we evaluated personality traits at intake and during maintenance treatment with methadone. Methods - The form A of the Eysenck Personality Inventory (EPI) was given to opioid addicts at intake and after 6 and 12 months of methadone treatment. Results - 134 subjects (96 males and 38 females) took the test at intake, 60 completed 12 months of treatment. After 12 months, the EPI Neuroticism (N) and the Extraversion-introversion (E) scale scores decreased significantly. The N score improved in the first 6 months, while the E score improved only during the second 6 months of treatment. Compared to a reference group of French normal controls, male and female opioid addicts showed high N and E scores. Demographic data and EPI scores of patients who stayed in treatment for 12 months did not differ significantly from those of dropouts (n=23). Patients with a history of suicide attempts (SA) started to use heroin at an earlier age and they showed a higher E score and a tendency for a higher N score at intake. Discussion - The two personality dimensions of the EPI changed during MMT, and the N score converged towards the score of normal controls. Opioid addicts differ from normal controls mostly in their N score. The EPI did not help to differentiate 12-month completers from dropouts. Higher E scores in patients with an SA history might reflect a higher impulsivity, which has been linked to suicidality in other patient groups.

You mentioned in the tags of one of your posts on Mercutio's (non-existant) sexuality that you're partial to the idea that he may have been inspired by Kit Marlowe; I want to hear all about this lol.
Also, do you have an Marlowe recommendations? I've heard good things so I would like to read some of his plays.
Oh, yeah, my Christopher-Marlowe-may-have-been-the-inspiration-for-Mercutio theory! Glad to talk about it.
So I’m definitely not the only one with this theory—some scholars have mused as much and I did come across them. But the case for Mercutio-as-Marlowe stands roughly as follows:
One of Marlowe’s nicknames was Mercury (!!). Now, Shakespeare clearly did not come up with the name, as he got it from his source material in Brooke et al. But as the Mercutio there was just some random courtier, I have no doubt that Shakespeare got an eyeful of that name in the Brooke poem and just 😏 and seized that golden opportunity to honor his friend in this way
By all accounts Marlowe was charming, erudite, intellectually edgy (an avowed Arianist and homosexual), with a nasty bit of a temper. Mercutio is much along those same lines
Marlowe and Shakespeare may have been friends as well as theater rivals, with similar backgrounds but (I suspect) opposite personalities and sensibilities—the iconoclastic Marlowe with the much milder Shakespeare. You see that same push-pull dynamic in Romeo and Mercutio’s relationship.
Mercutio was killed during his duel with Tybalt. Marlowe was killed while fighting with his fellow spies at a tavern/government safehouse in Deptford. So Shakespeare making Mercutio’s death off-stage may be a reference to Marlowe’s out-of-London death (and perhaps how Will came to find out).
So yeah, not much evidence, come to think of it. Just general vibes. Mercutio does have lines about dreams that are a reference to Thomas Nash, who was also friends with Marlowe and perhaps Shakespeare as well. But of course Shakespeare would make Mercutio a composite of his friends and not just limit himself to any ~one thing.
Against this is the fact that there is no clear evidence that Shakespeare and Marlowe knew each other. That said, the theater world was tiny and Marlowe wrote for Strange’s Men; Shakespeare may have been a player for them at the time. But it’s logical for many fangirls scholars to believe they knew each other and were friends/rivals and so forth.
As for recommendations, I’ve only ever read Marlowe’s Doctor Faustus, which even got a Globe performance, and his Hero and Leander, a narrative poem along the lines of Shakespeare’s Venus and Adonis. I’m ashamed to admit that in class I mistook a passage from Hero for Shakespeare’s, an ignominy that will live in me forever until my dying breath.
But while Marlowe was never as great at character as Shakespeare, his verse was very good (if a little too regular with the masculine endings) and nigh indistinguishable from Shakespeare’s in the beginning. Also, Marlowe is 1000x gayer, even writing about Edward II and his forbidden romance with his favorite Gaveston. Hence his popularity in fangirl circles. If you like Shakespeare but feel he could have been more violent, political, and gay, Marlowe will be right up your alley. There have been tons of fanfiction about him, some notable ones of which are:
The Marlowe Papers (Barber)—author is a stupid anti-Stratfordian, but her verse is legit
A Tip for the Hangman (Epstein)—not feeling the main romance, but it was fun and well-researched
The Secret Life of Shakespeare (Morgan)—actually focusing on Will/Anne, but this version of Marlowe is my favorite. He is just as I’ve envisioned him

Hi, my sibling in Christ!! I am so glad you like my blog hehehe. Though this is *technically* my sideblog it has sort of become my main blog since I post most over here. The url thing is soooooo hard. "Idylls of the Divine Romance" is actually the name of a book of poetry I wish to write and publish. 117 poems inspired by every singly verse in the Song of Songs, my favorite book of scripture (I'm a hopeful mystic and hopeless romantic so you know lol). My other ideas (god-speaks-in-thunder-and-poetry and something i cannot remember) were too long and tumblr didn't like them too much T-T
My advice though: pick a favorite book or theologian or church father or church mother or mystic or scholar or poem or psalm or proverb or whatever lol. Find something/someone about the faith that you love and turn that into your url.

Ryo’s Gun & Jane Austen
It’s hard to see, but in the OP Ryo’s gun (and it is Ryo’s gun, I made the mistake in a previous post of thinking it was Kazuki’s, whoops! But I have noted that correction in a reblog, so definitely check that out - I’ll link it below) has a quote on it from, what Google is telling me, is Jane Austen. The quote is:
I want nothing but death.
Those were her last words.
Seeing those last words on Ryo’s gun in the OP with the current situation and the Episode 11 preview and everything - it can certainly seem scary.
But, I’m going to focus a bit on Jane Austen as a writer, what her styles and themes are, and what that might mean for Buddy Daddies or how it might be reflected in Buddy Daddies. Since Kazuki’s VA did mention that we should think about what message the director is sending in this last act.
So, let’s take a look. I think the main two ways that Jane Austen’s style and themes can be seen in Buddy Daddies, is how her writing was considered realism and with a lot of emphasis being placed on “the everyday” that was accompanied by comedy:
Text: Jane Austen's (1775–1817) distinctive literary style relies on a combination of parody, burlesque, irony, free indirect speech and a degree of realism. She uses parody and burlesque for comic effect and to critique the portrayal of women in 18th-century sentimental and Gothic novels. Austen extends her critique by highlighting social hypocrisy through irony; she often creates an ironic tone through free indirect speech in which the thoughts and words of the characters mix with the voice of the narrator. The degree to which critics believe Austen's characters have psychological depth informs their views regarding her realism. While some scholars argue that Austen falls into a tradition of realism because of her finely executed portrayal of individual characters and her emphasis on "the everyday", others contend that her characters lack a depth of feeling compared with earlier works, and that this, combined with Austen's polemical tone, places her outside the realist tradition.

We see aspects of this with Buddy Daddies. In Episode 4 we have a critique being made about the ridiculous levels of paperwork and prep work that needs to go into sending a kid to daycare.
While we get depictions of everyday aspects like Kazuki cleaning or Rei and Miri playing games together.
Another aspect of Jane Austen’s writing style is about character’s growing to become “better” and more moral versions of themselves.
Text: Her plots are fundamentally about education; her heroines come to see themselves and their conduct more clearly, and become better, more moral people. While Austen steers clear of the formal moralizing common in early-19th-century literature, morality—characterized by manners, duty to society and religious seriousness—is a central theme of her works. Throughout her novels, serious reading is associated with intellectual and moral development.
We see that happening in Buddy Daddies as well, through scenes like Rei’s thoughts on how he just mindlessly killed in the past:
Or with the discussion and prevalence on change:
There are other elements and themes to her writing as well, like the focus on women, of course. But I don’t think we can really speak on that aspect too much until the series is said and done.
Of course, the quote is likely also there due to Ryo’s curiosity with death, final words, and the reason for why humans exist. But, I would like to think that this quote wasn’t picked solely for that reason either.
Also, I’m not super well versed in Jane Austen stuff (I know some of my moots are though! Berkeley: Institute of Buddhist Studies, 1994. 80 pp. One of the earliest treatment of Shinran’s life in English by a Western scholar. Scholastic in nature but this monograph can be enjoyed by non-specialists. The author raises many intriguing questions, for example, 1) why did Shinran enter the monastery, 2) why did he leave, 3) what were the specific charges against him, and 4) what prompted his return to Kyoto.

On 19th August 1560 the Scottish scholar and poet, James Crichton, was born.
Soldier, scholar, poet and athlete, he was a graduate of St Andrews University and a tutor of King James VI. James Crichton, known as the Admirable Crichton, was a Scottish polymath, a latin term that translates to “universal man”, basically he was good at everything!
Crichton wasnoted for his extraordinary accomplishments in languages, the arts, and sciences. One of the most gifted individuals of the 16th century, James Crichton of Clunie Perthshire, was the son of Robert Crichton of Eliok, Lord Advocate of Scotland, and Elizabeth Stewart, from whose line James could claim Royal descent.
At the age of eight Crichton’s eloquence in his native vernacular was compared with that of Demosthenes and Cicero. By fifteen he knew “perfectly” Latin, Greek, Hebrew, Arabic, and Syriac; and commanded native conversational fluency in Spanish, French, Italian, “Dutch”, Flemish, and, oh, “Sclavonian”, don’t worry I looked it up for us, it’s basically Slovenian.
That was the mere beginning of Crichton’s admirableness. He was also a champion athlete, a horseman, a fencer, a dancer, a singer of rare voice, and the master of most known wind and string instruments. His St. Andrews professor, Rutherford, a noted commentator, judged him to be one of the leading philosophers of the era.
After sucking all the available education to him in Scotland, it was only natural he should start on mainland Europe, he studied in France at the College of Navarre at the University of Paris. Here the young Scotsman cut a broad swath, though according to his jealous fellows his arenas of greatest activity were the tavernia’s and the whorehouses, rather than the lecture hall. Young Crichton did like the ladies, who in turn found him most–admirable.
He may have been liked by the ladies, but nobody likes a big heid, and that is how Crichton must have come across to many, nowadays he would have been one of the Chasers, or an Egghead on our TV screens, but back in the 16th century there were no such outlets for Crichton to show his big heid off, so he had posters printed up declaring that on a day six weeks hence, at nine in the morning, in the main hall of the College of Navarre, he intended to present himself to dispute with all comers all questions put to him regarding any subject. He had these put up on all the appropriate notice boards and church doors, before disappearing into the red light district to prepare himself for the contest. His adversaries had to quit laughing when on the appointed day Crichton appeared as advertised and bested the greatest local experts in grammar, mathematics, geometry, music, astronomy, logic, and theology.
The Crichton Show, having conquered Paris, moved next to the Italian peninsula. The young Scot performed memorable feats of academic disputation first in Rome and then in Venice. There he became fast friends with the famous scholar-printer Aldus Munitius, who is a credible witness to some of his more amazing intellectual performances. One of his ways of showing off was giving off the cuff instances of Comedic verse, a sort of Stand Up routine, but with that Crichton twist, the odes he told were in Latin!
Tradition has it on the street in Mantua one night he was accosted by four swordsmen, with superb sword play Crichton disarmed them all and forced them to show their faces. One of them, their leader indeed, turned out to be one of his pupils and prodigy, Vincenzo Gonzaga who was the son of The Duke of Mantua. Crichton was in the Duke’s employ and the youngster was jealous of the Scot, Crichton was also romantically linked to Vicenzo’s ex mistress. On seeing Vincenzo, Crichton instantly dropped to one knee and presented his sword, hilt first, to the prince, his master’s son. Vincenzo took the blade and with it stabbed Crichton cruelly through the heart, killing him instantly. James Crichton of Cluny was then in his twenty-second year.
There have been many accounts of Crichton in literature through the years since, mostly fictional but with hints of the story, the most famous is arguably the J M Barrie play, but the title of the play is the only semblance to the story of the Scottish Polymath.
