(Starting off strong with three fics by the same author, lmao)

"Casting Rain", "Phantom Pains" and "A Good Ol' Fashioned Hell-Raising" all by SilverSkye13 If you can't tell, I found and proceeded to fall head over heels in love with SilverSkye13's Undertale writings. Go check out their works, they're such a good writer! Onto the fics I'm highlighting here-

Casting Rain Walks in Crumples to the ground Sobs This fic. Omfg this fic. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH- An Undertale Wartime!Grillby fic, follows our favourite fire boy's experiences from towards the end of the war all the way up until just after the barrier is created, and it is SO GOOD. Gaster's also there! It's not a Grillster fic, they're just friends, but I feel like they can be read as queerplatonic/platonic life partners (I certainly do, XD). And honestly, who can blame them, because HOT DAMN THESE BOYS GO THROUGH IT. This fic is so fucking beautiful. It goes on the list of fics, a very short list, that have been able to make me cry, there are so many ups and downs to it, the characters go on so many interesting journeys (both physically and development wise), and the author's notes are also a really fun read. THERE'S ALSO CHAPTERS WITH MUSIC TO SYNC IT TO, AND LIKE?? THE SELECTION IS SO GOOD?? Seriously the music just ELEVATES the reading experience so much (personal favourite is Chapter 63, can't listen to or think about that song without the section it's meant to play in Casting Rain happening in my head, XD. A close second would be Chapter 74) It is a LOOOOOOONG fic (90 CHAPTERS, OVER 400K WORDS, HUH), took me a week to get through it, but let me tell you it's so worth it.

It is also DARK. Chapter 48 onwards it just keeps getting darker and darker (ha). Not to say that the other 47 chapters previous aren't dark, but it's ESPECIALLY there after Chapter 48. There's gore, there's violence, there's a lot of death, there's a lot of grief and really dark headspaces, there's war and it's NOT sugarcoated, so be wary! Also, don't be me and ignore the "Character Death" tag. Cause it's there for a reason. And it drop kicks you in the face. Distant wailing

Phantom Pains Best way to describe this one is; don't fuck around with a timeline cause holy shit you do NOT want to find out. Decided to save this one for later halfway through Casting Rain (since, fun fact, Casting Rain was created to expand on the Wartime!Grillby headcannons Phantom Pain touches on, although they're perfectly able to be read independently of each other), and like, oh my god I'm so glad I did?? It's so good, SO GOOD.

Like Casting Rain, this fic gets DARK. Sans isn't doing well mentally (neither is Papyrus, honestly... which, tbf, considering their situation, can't say I blame 'em, lol), and this fic doesn't sugarcoat it. So be careful! Trigger warnings for especially dark headspaces are in the top author's note at each appropriate chapter, but it's be a disservice if I didn't warn you guys about that. I will admit, Sans' characterisation might not be for everyone (listen, early day Undertale fandom, give it a break, XD), but I say it's justified in the context of the story, especially as you learn more about said context as the story goes on. And! Papyrus' characterisation is definitely quite a world's difference from the characterisations of other Paps around during that time (I say it'd be more accurate to his canon counterpart, actually!) Also, Grillby is a BAMF, absolute MVP (Sans and Paps BOTH would be so much worse off without him, XD), and has zero shits left to give. Which, if you do what I did and read Phantom Pains AFTER Casting Rain, it makes a lot of sense, lmao.

A Good Ol' Fashioned Hell-Raising WE'RE GOING TO THE WILD WEST WITH THIS ONE, FUCKERS! Grillby is a retired outlaw just trying to make an honest living in a small town, but his life gets turned upside down when his old partner (in more ways than one-), Gaster, shows up out of the blue, with trouble from their old life close at his heels. God, I love this fic SO MUCH. Also, when I had to take breaks from it for life, consistently ended up with my internal monologue having a southern drawl to it, XD.

There's a lot of violence in the one (obviously), so be wary of that!

"Nightfall" by Leletha SUCH a good fic, good LORD Hiccup gets kidnapped by Cloudjumper along with Valka as a baby and ends up being a feral dragon boy who's probably (read; definitely) platonic soulmates with Toothless. SO. GOOD. URGH The way Leletha handled dragon speech, behaviour and intelligence in this is SO GOOD and also a take I haven't ever really seen in the HTTYD fandom?? It's so animalistic but also not?? It's hard to describe and honestly best to experience yourself. ALSO THE WAY THE HUMAN CHARACTERS ARE TREATED WITH SO MUCH GRACE AND RESPECT (poor Stoick and his absolute mess and how that is handled is arguably my favourite, XD)?? Chef's kiss BEAUTIFUL! I need to reread it soon, lol. It's also part of a series! Bunch of little off-shoot stories, alongside a re-writing of both HTTYD2 and THW! I need to get around to reading those two, honestly.

This fic gets violent, and can be a mild mind bend at first in Hiccup's chapters (thanks to the way he acts and speaks and thinks, I love him, lol), but you get used to it. So be wary around the violence!

Aaaaaaand that is it! Probably start the Old Bingo card soon-ish (hopefully before the end of the year, but who knows, lol). Anyways, happy holidays to all, no matter what you celebrate, and I hope you all have a safe and warm (or cool if you're in Australia like me, lol) holidays! <3

Alright in the beginning we can see Jay, Cole, and Kai complaining to Wu and saying that Zane was weird.

I honestly love Wu's wise response:

"What is weird? Someone who is different? Or someone who is different than you?"

We then get a few flashbacks where Zane acts a bit odd. Okay... not that big of a deal as of rn.

The scene then shifts to the group at dinner. Zane comes walking in with a delious-looking turkey, wearing a pink apron.

As expected, the group laughs. Even Master Wu (totally not responsible and kind of u, Wu) joins in with the laughter.

After clearing up that mess they decide to have a food fight. Now on the surface, nothing seems wrong about that. (except for the fact that they're wasting food. my asian parents would never allow that in our house, loll)

But pay close attention to Zane.

He isn't smiling. He isn't laughing.

He's upset.

When Jay throws a piece of food at him, he FLINCHES!!! In his mind, all the time and love he spent making the meal is being wasted and underappreciated as his family throws it around as if it's nothing. They're all playing around and joking, but he isn't laughing...

And when he goes outside and sees the stars, look how happy he is!

This is one thing I love about Zane: he finds happiness in the most simplest of things.

When he sees the falcon fly away to an unknown location. He hesitates. He looks back at the monastery where you can STILL hear their laughter. His smile fades. Then he looks at the falcon and decides to follow it. And he follows the falcon with a SMILE.

Time skip, we see Zane and the team find Lloyd's treehouse. (a pretty impressive treehouse, ngl)

Just so I don't spoil the entire ep to you, I'm gonna ignore all the fighting scenes. When the ninjas come back, they see that their monastery is destroyed. And what do they do?

They yell at Zane. They blame him.

And what does Zane do? Nothing.

He doesn't retaliate. Doesn't try to put the blame on others. He does nothing. He takes all the blows.

He leaves and we later find out it's because he saw the falcon.

But... Y"ALL! When everyone apologizes, he doesn't act smug or try to rub it in their faces-- he asks them why they were apologizing.

In his innocently, pure mind, he doesn't take anything into account. He forgives them.

This is such a pure action, that's so simple but still so deep. He loves his team so much and nothing they ever do will affect that love he has for them. (im crying y'all)

AND THE LAST SCENE!!!! 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

OH MY GOSH!!! I WAS SQUEALING WHEN I WATCHED THIS!!

(first of... Jay and Kai run really weirdly... why are their arms flapping around!?!)

And lastly... look at this wholesome scene.

Here we can see a huge contrast to the beginning scene. Here Zane initiates the throwing of food. And here, everyone is laughing.

It's only a joke if everyone is laughing. It's only funny if everyone is smiling. It's only "playing around" if everyone is okay with it.

I know that this review was a bit deep, but I'm only in the 2nd ep of season 1 and I'm absolutely loving it!! I'm so glad I decided to rewatch Ninjago!

Maybe they're going to bite our face off if we approach. Or maybe they're super drunk and need to pee, and are waiting for us to walk away so they can have some privacy. Either way, best thing to do is keep right on walking.

I agree! The building with the clear and visible bauble in it is the best place to hide, for reasons that are 100% because of safety and not at all about wanting that bauble! Let's go that way!

Kurumi, don't over-exaggerate. We passed like four zombies on the way here and only two of them were even geographically near each other. One was behind a fence.

Also, none of them were aggressive. I don't think these "zombies", which we are now officially calling them, are active hunters. Each one we saw was standing around, unresponsive to anything around it. That one guy that tried to bite Yuma only did so because Yuma got right up in his personal space. When we were standing ten feet away discussing him, he made no response.

As much as you two are panicking about it, he didn't chase us either. We had to manually activate him, and he stopped caring about us as soon as we left his space. That's not so much zombie in the conventional sense as it is... delirium, I suppose. These people are like 98% catatonic.

If you check your inventory, you should have a Combat Knife and maybe the game's first Handgun to start. Though often times you have to find the Handgun in a tutorial area much like this one.

In any case, while you two scrounge around, I have a bauble to get to!

And what a Bauble! I could sure use some Halara time right now, that's for sure.

i feel like he might question his own gender identity a little as well sometimes, especially due to what people say online (like calling him “pretty”, the edits some people make, praising him for breaking stereotypes, etc.)

so, he probably understands a bit deeper than some of the other members might.

in that same vein, i think it might make him a little bit emotional to hear your story !!

over the years, i think it’s plain to see that he’s become more comfortable with expressing his more feminine attributes, which has always comforted you as his friend.

he understands the feeling of being uncomfortable with the gender roles one is expected to follow, so he empathizes with you.

in terms of his actual first reaction, i think it would be pretty similar to what i suggested in the other version of this.

he also seems like the type to be super, super diligent with adjusting to whatever pronouns you feel comfortable using or words you’re okay with him using to refer to you.

(maybe it’s because we know he was a good student and he’s diligent with practicing his english. training his brain to correct itself would be like studying for him lol)

for example, instead of calling you “pretty” or “handsome,” he might even try simply pointing out a part of your appearance that he thinks looks especially great !! something like your eyes, your hair, your outfit, etc.

I’ve gone and fucked it up mate Fem! Reader Warnings: A little ‘hehehe’ with the descriptions but not really

It's the end of the month and you spent all your money on basic necessities, and when payday- or I suppose, allowance day- came, Crowley forgot to give you the bloody money to continue living, so you had to scrounge up some money. And hey hey hey, there was a spot open in Monstro Lounge, so you took it. Azul, ever the businessman, took an opportunity on your gender (fem!) and dressed you in a typical maid skirt, ones you'd find in your café anime. 

You've dreamed of wearing one, to be honest; the short skirt, the frills, the open neckline that showed off your collarbone, the white ruffles on the top portion, the cute buttons, black tights that stop just below the skirt, the headband, the tie around your neck, everything. It was everything you wanted and more, really. Well, you didn't HAVE you wear it... but Azul promised a fine, a much finer pay then what you'd usually get if you wear it, and you're desperate for the cash, so...

You began pulling your skirt down. "Senpai, um..." "You can always go back if you want, but..." Azul shot back, an evil smirk placate on his face. He knew what you wanted, and he's going to take advantage of it. "Tch..." You sigh, sitting on the couch, your skirt draping flawlessly. Now the only problem was that there was Maid and Butler Day (yes, that's an official holiday in this world, and you don't question this world's oddities) and according to custom, maids and butlers must give out a Special Treatment consisting of lap pillow, an ear clean out and feeding, which is... hmmm, it’s interesting... no you’re not interested bullshit that’s BULLSHIT Yes, alright, yes, you SO SO want to do it- you crave the attention and WANT IT- but seriously, you thought you'd have a bit of practice first! You're pretty grateful that your friends decide to spare you some of the harassments that'll eventually come.

*Ace* "Hey, prefect." Ace greets coolly, already snickering. "Nice getup." You acknowledge him with a nod and start your act- or was it just an act?  "Welcome, master." You smile at him, grinning cheekily. "What can I get you?" You hand him the menu, your eyes looking directly at him. "Um..." Ace swallows his dry throat, taken aback at your appeal. "I-I'll get the A3." "Of course, master. Please wait a minute." You stand up, taking the menu with it and tugging down your skirt. Ace sits down on the coach and swears. "Fuck." He looks up at your figure, the image completely plastered in his mind. 'Oh god...' - You return, plate in hand. "I'm back, master." You sit back down gently, making sure the plate doesn't fall. "A3, just as you ordered." Ace mutters a thanks, taking the food from you, but you resist his hold. "Master, please let me feed you." You say. He has the gal to laugh, then say: "What, like couples? Aww, I didn't know you wanted me THAT bad, Y/N~" A light blush colors your cheeks, but you answer back: "Well, you know now, master. Now come," You take a scoop of the food and lift it to chin-height. "Say ah~" Now it's Ace's turn to blush, not expecting that. "A-ah..." He swallows the food, temporarily forgetting the situation. "Is good!" "Monstro Lounge serves good food." You agree, breaking character just a bit. Ace seems to collect his nerves, because the next thing he does surprises you. He openly gazes your form, from top to bottom, stopping at certain parts to admire it more. You blush at the sudden attention, but don't say anything- you love it, after all.

- He finishes the meal and sighs in glee. "Mhm, its good." You nod in agreement, a smirk making its way on your lips. It's time for the lap pillow- ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! Calm yourself, good god! You softly pat your lap, like an invitation. "Master, I bet you're feeling a little sleepy. Please feel free to use me as a pillow." Ace knows what you're going for and hey, since you're going so far as to say that, why not use the opportunity? "Sure." He simply says, crawling up to you. His warm fingers meet your warm thighs, making you slightly shift. "Hey, don't move." He grumbles, positioning himself so that he faces inwards, your stomach in front of his eyes. Ahh, you're so warm... he wonders if he can ask for this again sometime in the future... "R-right..." You let a stutter slip. You're adorable, he thinks. Yeah, he's totally going to ask for another lap pillow when this is done- that is if the other first years don't get to it. Ace 'tsk' just thinking about it, jealously flaring up in his heart. Seriously, you're not even his (yet), how can you make him feel this way?! He slowly falls asleep under you, these thoughts swirling in his head. You notice Ace's breathing slow, feeling the cold breeze hit your lower abdomen. You look down at him, happy that he finds your lap satisfying, but you haven't even gotten to the ear cleaning yet, but... You glance back at him, his chest exhaling and inhaling slowly. Maybe you'll let this one slide... after all, what maid disturbs her master when he's asleep?

Ahh, you’re so glad you spend all your times back in your world watching the blue-light screen instead of getting proper sleep- you wouldn’t get to experience THIS gem!

Sexuality Headcanon: i have no particular fixed pref, he could be straight, but i like to think he's bi throughout. I think he is a believer of fluid sexuality, so he doesn't really fits himself in a label. He goes along with whoever he likes.

Gender Headcanon: I sometimes like to hc him as a trans man (ftm). He/him pronouns. He was cultured into toxic masculinity. He has had his struggles with it. He was teased for being soft because of his anxiety issues. His tendency to be emotional and expressive. He has had been a victim of toxic masculinity constantly, even adopted it and perpetuated it further for a while before giving up. He is passionate about healthy masculinity and really understands it now. He is a fierce feminist and in for breaking the patriarchy.

A ship I have with said character: the thing is i hate Canon. I dont like the first sight first meet fall in love kind of thing they did with hunk and shay, but with what I headcanon shay as, I think she is perfect for him. He would balance her head on approach to stuff, and she will balance his tendency to ponder. He is a total simp for shay. He's a sucker for a simple calm life, while shay is on the ambitious side, and he fully supports her.

A BROTP I have with said character: hance is a given. heith! I will fucking die for this. I love thinking up stories of how Keith, despite being the one to struggle to open up, will inevitably fall for hunk. Hunk is just so approachable, so welcoming, so loving. I see hunk as also very fierce. He will stand in front as a literal physical shield to protect the ones he loves. He is dedicated when he loves and he never gives up on anyone. This is something he will share with Keith. One of the only people who will relate with Keith on a soul level on this. Punk!!! I love it. So much. Hunk is just amazing at platonic relationships. Hunk takes care of pidge a lot, they are his sibling. They simp on tech together ofc!! Even tho Shiro is everyone's dad, hunk cares for him, brings him his energy drinks and blankets all the time cause let's be real Shiro is low-key wishing death all the time and does not care for himself. Hunk is one of those peeps who scream SHIRO! NO! everytime Shiro makes a bad joke about death. Hunk's caring nature extends to everyone. Allura again is bad at taking care of herself, and he helps. He defo teaches allura samoan box braids!!! Coran too. Hunk bakes with coran sitting beside, chatting unrelentlessly but here's the thing, Hunk doesn't tolerate it. He genuinely likes listening to people and knowing them. One of the reasons he goes so well with Lance.

A NOTP I have with said character: humph he could go with anyone ngl. Shunk is extra weird to me, Shiro is a dad through and through i ew shaladins.

A random headcanon:

Despite what people think, hunk thinks he struggles with words. He uses food to express love. If he feels distant with anyone, he cooks for them.

Hunk does get tired after caring for people so much, but he has healthy nice fam around him who he lets take care of him too. He knows he needs to care for himself, and after some time of struggling with it, he now proudly take care of himself as well.

Hunk has struggled with severe anxiety. He has had panic attacks, complete meltdowns. His family was a bit pressurizing in terms of his career and all, and he has always felt responsible to get an excellent job in the stem section to make his parents proud.

He got into stem because of his parents, but he developed his love for it later too. He genuinely started finding STEM very interesting.

He contributed in making of fun robots in school's stem centres all the time. He had a teacher who was obsessed with making anime monsters, and even though hunk himself hates gore and shit he had fun making those and sometimes watched those weird ass animes and talked about how those wild ass writers were defo on weed while writing the script. He bonded over weeb stuff surprisingly with Shiro ;)

He hasn't been the smartest forever, like pidge. He actually worked his way to it. He is very dedicated, hard working and passionate.

He has undiagnosed ADD, but it hasn't interferred with him fitting in much. He has been able to do his work, and he recognized some tricks to focus early in life. His anxiety drives him to work as much as it distracts him. he just discovers his ADD later in therapy.

He makes pretty notes. He has an unhealthy obsession with pastel yellow highlighter.

Hunk is very well equipped with samoan tattoo art designs and understanding them. it's something his grandparents taught him since forever. His grandfather did tattoos and he saw them when he was little. He wants to get atleast some sort of soga'i miki. He's been always conflicted about wanting Pe'a cause its so beautiful and masculine in expression and not wanting it because it's so painful and permanent.

Because he has lived in America his whole life, he has struggled with his national identity a lot. He gets taunted by by family in samoa for being American and for speaking english better than samoan. He doenst always fit in well in america either for obvious reasons. He has struggled with feeling like he belongs. Its something he bonds with Lance on.

He is passionate about dismantling the social organization in samoa and its ill effects. He understands the systems and talks about their unfairness. This is something his distant and traditional family members get annoyed at him for.

He talks passionately about the freedom struggles of samoa and the samoan civil wars. He likes listening to stories of freedom fighters of samoa and great leaders. He is very critical of European colonization and takes no shit from europe apologists.

He is low-key a Satanist and likes to tell people about how God was super sexist to Lilith and how absolutely bullshit her banishment was,, how Satan is the coolest first feminist and made her the queen she is, and how Satan is the coolest dude for being the first rebel and equalist. He talks about how he gave us knowledge, and it created the world we are in rn or else we would still be all dumb and naked in the garden. His family is Christian and religious, he has read stories from bibles and come to the conclusions himself.

General Opinion over said character: i am horribly sad but I swear to God one cuddle from this cinnamon roll will cure me of everything

Gallifrey Relisten: Spirit

This reaction post is almost 4,000 words long, which, given the episode in question.....is very on brand for me. So here have a whole lot of ramblings, in which I go back and forth between “I love this so much” and “hmm yes I do think Spirit is overhyped by virtue of being The Romana/Leela Episode,” and back and forth between “I will be objective and not get overtly shippy about this” and “I’m definitely getting overtly shippy about this.” 

(Includes discussion of The Apocalypse Element, the rest of Series 2, Intervention Earth and Enemy Lines, also a bit about Time War 3, but only in the last section.) 

Things that are absolutely not overrated and deserve every bit of the hype:

1. The premise

Like, hold on. Hold on. Here we have an entire episode resting on the premise of “Romana wants Leela to stay on Gallifrey so badly that in spite of being y’know, the President of a planet, and specifically a planet currently undergoing major social changes and dealing with evil eldritch beings, the #1 most important thing for her to do with her time is take Leela on a private vacation off world to convince Leela why she should stay on Gallifrey.” (Hint: it’s. it’s for Romana.) 

She also then proceeds to be very bad at using her words when it comes to this premise because Romana is all into grand gesture and very little into actually talking about her feelings. Of course. But in an episode that rests on the idea of Romana as the Rational, Logic-Driven One, and Leela as the Instinctive, Emotion-Driven One, it is very good that the premise of the episode is entirely driven by Romana’s emotions. (Wait. Am I going to talk myself out of the idea that Spirit creates these overly simplistic contrasts between Romana and Leela by arguing that it also muddies them at the same time? .....I still think the “overly simplistic” thing is true to an extent. But stay tuned.)

2. The core emotional story

I’m deeply into Gallifrey for the relationships between the main characters, so Spirit is vastly appealing on that front. 

The central question of Spirit is: can Leela trust Romana? Leela’s been deeply betrayed by her husband, she feels lost and adrift and she’s doubting her own ability to judge people. (“He stood before me as Torvald, and I did not know him. I had thought myself to have a keener eye.” / “But is his the only trust I may have given in error?”) Leela’s doubting her own instincts specifically, which is why it’s so important that this episode has Romana move from being more dismissive of Leela’s instinctive, emotional approach to the world, to understanding where Leela’s coming from and appreciating her instincts and worldview. Leela needs to trust not just Romana, but also herself.

And it is 1. important to explore this! Shoutout to Gallifrey for not brushing aside the emotional repercussions of Andred’s betrayal on Leela’s close relationships in general and her own image of herself! and 2. intersects in super fascinating ways with Romana’s trust issues.

Romana gets a hard time for the “valuable asset” thing, which. Fair. But I think it is important to acknowledge the premise here — the whole vacation, everything Romana is actually doing screams “I care about you very much on a personal level,” and just because she isn’t saying that doesn’t mean she isn’t showing that. Because she has her own baggage when it comes to friendship and trust, and a lot of that does loop back around to “being imprisoned for twenty years and having no one come to save you really messes you up. on so many levels.” 

(Also I have to mention the end of The Apocalypse Element because that last scene with the Doctor and Romana really established how I looked at Romana and her close personal relationships moving forward. Because yeahhhh maybe having the one (1) person who is specifically your Friend (and not your colleague, or advisor, or anything related to The Presidency) go “yeah you can clean up this mess right! cool bye!” after you’ve gone through decades of trauma immediately followed by needing to repel an invasion of your planet....maybe that might make you distrust that anyone in the universe is actually going to care about you as a person anymore, and not see you as The President of Gallifrey first and foremost). 

Bottom line: Romana really, really likes Leela (.....we all can decide in what way....), but also has a whole lot of doubt that other people could care about her as a person, doubt that it’s even worth letting herself be that emotionally vulnerable with someone else, because what if they throw her trust and care back in her face? And so this whole episode, there’s this undercurrent of wanting to trust each other and wanting to care about each other simmering under the surface for the both of them, but they’re both having trouble really seeing and believing what each other is feeling and I love it. I love this kind of interesting, complicated relationship struggle so much, and I love how Spirit has a positive ending, where they both manage to convey to each other in one way or another that they really do want to be around each other. ( “I was so alone in the world of dreams when you left. The wildlands were dark and so quiet. I do not wish to be alone.” / “There will be a place for you with me, for always. Whatever face I wear.” ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh) 

(Sure, the later episodes of the season fuck everything up again, but we are Not Talking about Insurgency/Imperiatrix here.) 

(We are also Not Talking about Intervention Earth/Enemy Lines....okay I’ll talk a little about IE/EL, but only because when relistening to Spirit there’s this sort of elephant in the room with “There will be a place for you with me, for always. Whatever face I wear.” And that elephant is the writers deciding that when Romana regenerated, she would abandon Leela, which...hmmm. To be fair, I have lots of more complex, specific thoughts about what might have happened emotionally and literally in that thankfully jettisoned timeline, but the bottom line is that I was and still am very *side eyes* at that writing choice.) 

3. The chair scene

Oh my god. Oh my god. This scene is actually brilliant and delightful on every relisten, I want it framed please?? 

I think it’s probably iconic because it’s just so happy, and it is so so wonderful to have a moment like that, with the two of them making up a silly story to Hallan about what happened to the window and laughing about it. And it is good! It’s so good! (A side note: Romana in particular in this episode has that “audibly smiling” tone of voice so so much more than usual, in addition to her overall tone having very clearly shifted away from “presidential” for the majority of the episode and y’all.....it’s so excellent to hear, that is such a rare thing.)

Also specifically, it’s the fact that Leela is like ugh this room is too stuffy :( and Romana immediately is like “I must fix this, I need to make her happy” and does something so ridiculous and impulsive just to please Leela.......again, this episode is pulling a Romana Has Too Many Feelings and is acting on her emotional instincts thing......yes. 

“You’re a breath of it yourself in the Capital.” “Oh Romana, nice words will not make me stay.” I’m sorry but Romana’s delivery of this line is so flirtatious? (And Leela going ah no, you can’t flirt your way out of this.) 

Things that are......not good:

1. The science vs. spirituality dichotomy (and how it makes the characters look)

The whole evolution vs. creation discussion thing not only feels too simplistic for the characters, but it also feels like it’s deliberately painting Leela in a negative light? To have Leela specifically going I don’t believe in evolution when the audience is going to disagree with her and bounce off of that....yeah. It also feels like the whole exaggerated ~super in tune with nature, doesn’t know or believe things about science~ thing is leaning into the racist indigenous stereotypes her character is too often linked to.

And on top of that, it doesn’t feel in character? Classic Who episodes don’t stick in my brain that well so my memory isn’t super clear on the details, but Leela was banished from her tribe for questioning their beliefs. Plus she learned that her society’s social divisions were based on misinformation and forgotten history (having more information was important, it changed things for her world). And she was the one who wanted to leave and travel, and also has always showed a lot of interest in learning new things. To have Leela so deeply clinging to the beliefs she learned when she was young, without any of that questioning or the nuance of weaving in new things she’s learned with the old......it feels reductive. (There could be so much more nuance here re: how living so long away from the Sevateem and having to defend her background so much on Gallifrey has affected her relationship with the culture and beliefs she grew up in, but Spirit has none of that.) 

2. The mindswap’s lack of nuance 

There’s a similar issue here with the mindswap, where Leela especially comes off as over-simplified. I don’t know if this was an acting choice or a directing choice, but the over-the-topness of Lalla’s performance during the mindswap really feeds that (the way Romana’s voice sounds so different when she’s “acting like Leela”, while Leela still sounds fundamentally like herself when she’s acting more like Romana — why the difference?). Also, Romana is a lot more helpless and distressed when she has part of Leela in her mind, which again, does not make Leela come off as especially competent (even though she is). There are times when this episode feels like it’s trying harder to put Romana and Leela into these boxes than it is at trying to break down those boxes and yeah, all around I wish there was more nuance.

3. The interrupting of the vacation date, damn it, do you think I care about a “plot”?

Alright, alright this one is not in the same category as the other two. It is absolutely not a valid criticism, it is purely the “I want this audio to cater to me, personally” part of my brain getting disappointed every time I relisten when Wynter crashes the vacation. Specifically, when they’re all alone in the woods together having important personal conversations and Leela’s decided that they’re camping out for the night....maybe I just wanted to hear the overnight camping trip, y’know. Maybe I just wanted them to cuddle beneath the stars. (Also this will come back big time next episode, but I very much back away from horror of Wynter’s mutilation, I am a squeamish person and the Wynter thing is not my favorite plot.) 

Misc liveblogging things: 

“I’m sorry I had to have you dragged here to my quarters. I have requested an audience with you several times on a matter of security but have received no answer.” — It’s unclear exactly how much time has passed between Lies and Spirit, but not too long(?) and Leela’s been trying to track down Andred a lot during this time (which means that once again, Romana’s specifically taking Leela away from looking for Andred....).

Leela scathingly calling Romana “Madam President” oof. (I think this moment may have been what I was thinking of re: Leela only uses Romana’s title when she’s annoyed or angry, will have to note if/when it happens again.) 

“It is your world and not mine. Although I have lived here for many years it has never been my home. And I am unhappy.” I know I’ve said this before, but Leela’s concept of home is very much the people she cares about and hhhhh so many feelings about this throughout the series.

Oof Darkel’s got Romana pegged with the “how far will she go” thing.

Is Narvin......being nice re: Romana having a trying time? Or sarcastic? Or is he just like oh thank god she’s off the planet for a hot sec I can take a breath. 

Brax saying it was him that recommended Romana leave and insisting they don’t talk about it — he’s sooo covering for her, but also I want to know how that convo went....how exactly did Romana explain the “I’m going to take Leela on a private vacation off-world for.....personal reasons.....please cover for me slash be my emergency contact” thing? 

“So I can only conclude from your recent behavior that you’re experiencing a considerable amount of pain.” — I mean, Leela did explicitly say earlier that she was unhappy. Still, it is a really good moment here — Romana saying I see that you’re hurting and I want to help. 

.......and that’s right before “valuable asset” line. You were doing so good, Romana. (She does say friend though! I mean, she says it like it’s an ordeal, but she does immediately course correct to admit that Leela’s her friend.) Also....I’m having some kinda thought here about the “asset” line — how she compliments Leela in terms of her usefulness is icky, but I think Romana often judges her own worth based off of how useful she is to Gallifrey? I think there are several moments throughout the series that point to Romana basing her worth as a person off of her work and how successful she is at protecting her world and making it better, which is just an overall unhealthy mindset to be in (and this says something about the toxicity of Gallifreyan culture possibly but also something about the lingering trauma of Etra Prime and living for decades in a place where her life itself (whether she survived) was directly tied to her usefulness...going to mull this over more, but I think there’s something here). 

Hallan is so awful about Leela, and he goes on for a bit about how he should be watching the president at all times — aka there is definitely resentment within the Chancellery Guard towards Leela for taking the role of bodyguard to the president. And this is mixed in with nasty comments about Andred, former member of the Chancellery Guard, for marrying an alien. 

“A marriage is about maintaining the power of the chapters, strengthening alliances between houses” — it is interesting how more than once in the audios they talk about marriage as primarily a political thing in Time Lord culture (at least among the elite), with love being an exception and something disapproved of. 

The “Leela’s been on Gallifrey for twenty-five years” math......does not work. Between The Invasion of Time and the Gallifrey audios, Romana left Gallifrey, ended up traveling with the Doctor for a while, stayed behind in E-space for a while, returned from E-space to Gallifrey, became President, got captured by the Daleks and held prisoner for twenty years, and according to Square One I believe it’s been “years” since The Apocalypse Element.......and apparently only twenty-five years have passed on Gallifrey? Even if we pretend that no time passed on Gallifrey during Romana’s adventures with the Doctor and in E-space, that timeline is still questionable. Leela has to be on Gallifrey for a lot longer than that. 

“I’ve searched for [my purpose] in many places.” — It’s interesting that Romana lists off the places she’s tried to find purpose, but doesn’t say anything at all about Gallifrey — Leela is the one to say that Romana has found her purpose on Gallifrey, Romana never actually says that. (I have...lot of feelings about Romana’s very complicated relationship to Gallifrey.) 

Romana mentions Pandora predicting that she would rule over Gallifrey, and predicting that Romana would let that happen — Romana is worried about Pandora in particular, and also there’s the implication that she wants Leela to stay to help her hold onto herself and prevent that future. 

Just ahhhh the scene by the fire where Leela decides, after avoiding too much discussion about what she’s feeling, to be emotionally honest: “It frightens me to think that I have spent so much of my life with another in a trust that I believed was true and strong, one that could not sicken, and that I was wrong.”; “You are my friend. I know that, for all we disagree on. And yet, if tomorrow you grew sick, you could throw off your form like an old sheet and be a person I would no longer recognize, not with my eyes nor with my heart.” It’s a good scene!!

The whole “who is the broken man?” mystery is good on first listen I suppose, but I’ve never quite bought that they can’t ID him. Can the Time Lords not do a quick DNA test or something? (To be fair, these are the same people who missed that Andred was impersonating someone else for months, but at least here they actively know that they need to be figuring out who he is.)

The herbal remedy — “The outsiders use it when in pain or distress.” Confirmation that Leela does hang out with the outsiders on Gallifrey. 

“I’ve been inside these things I don’t know how many times and I assure you nothing could go wrong.” Post-Etra Prime Romana trying to get some sleep for once tbh (also okay she does have some healthy coping mechanisms apparently). 

“It speaks to your innermost wishes and wonders and indulges them while you dream” “There is a wild woman inside me” I’m so sorry but did they really not intend to making the sensory tanks and mindswap sound incredibly erotic because

“It is winter here.” *eyebrow waggle*

I do not like hearing stabbing sounds! (Also apparently this season has a thing for Romana kinda sorta killing people with knives.) 

Leela wakes up a bit later than Romana (she stays in the dream space longer), and she says she heard Pandora’s voice — Romana dismisses that, but I do wonder what exactly happened in the dreamspace after Romana woke and what additional things Leela might have heard/seen??

Hallan is so shitty, kick his ass Leela.

I do wonder why the subplot with Melyin and Hallan was included? Was it to introduce Hallan as a character and flesh out the side characters so we know them a bit better when they’re around with the Wynter subplot? (Personally, I don’t enjoy how earlier in the episode they keep cutting away from Romana and Leela’s really important and interesting conversation to those two sides characters, so I’m not sure they needed that storyline?) But there is this sort of interesting moment where Melyin talks about freeing herself from this place where she’s isolated and Leela sympathizes — and yet at the same time is choosing to go back to Gallifrey. There is potentially an interesting parallel here, but I’m not exactly sure what the parallel is supposed to be saying about Leela.

“And what about you? Back to Gallifrey and your husband?” “I am returning to Gallifrey, yes. It is not yet time for me to leave.” Leela expertly dodging mentioning Andred in her response or referring to him as her husband. Actually I kinda want to pay more attention to when she does or doesn’t refer to Andred as her husband. I’m pretty sure she calls him her husband after he dies because that is who she’s grieving, but in this episode she talks about wanting to confront him and hurt him or make peace with him, and in A Blind Eye she was all “my husband is dead” (and I think there are some things in Insurgency about this) —there is a question here about whether or not she still considers herself married to Andred at this point.   

How did the knowledge of events get out on Gallifrey? Brax says if people were watching his movements closely it wouldn’t be hard to put things together — but also he probably knows that Romana needs to return for Gallifrey for events to play out, so it seems quite possible that he essentially leaked the info himself (knowing that the events of Pandora are coming....oof). 

Leela talks about returning to Gallifrey avenge the broken man — in series 2 and 3, she frequently turns to vengeance as something to give her motivation and purpose when she’s unhappy and grieving, but I forgot it came up as early as Spirit ahhh yikes. 

The (shippy) elephant in the room:

As a final thing, I do want to mention that while this episode has a reputation of being really gay (because yep it so so subtextually gay)....I do always remember that it is only subtext. Specifically in a “isn’t it interesting that other ships between main characters get clearly teased as romantic possibility, but when it’s the core relationship of the show that just so happens to be between two characters played by women, they would never explicitly hint that there might be anything romantic going on there” way. (For a long time, I tried to convince myself this didn’t bother me. It does.) 

Like don’t get me wrong, I adore their friendship and I am very cool with their relationship being entirely platonic in the audios. However, my feelings are also very context-dependent, and the context is an audio drama series in which the only explicitly queer characters are side/minor characters who die horribly (and also only exist in the very recent releases). There are no canon f/f relationships or canonically queer women in the entire series (no, Leela/Veega doesn’t count, they were pretty explicit on that being not canon), in contrast with plenty of canon m/f relationships. This is also why I say that I’d be 100% unbothered if Gallifrey really was equal-opportunity devoid of romance (I really genuinely enjoy the friendship-centric narrative of this series, it’s so good) or even had significant canonically queer side characters, but when there’s such a pointed ignoring of any queer subtext and a general ‘would never ever make any main character canonically queer’ vibe throughout the whole series (I am looking at you Unity) it’s.....hmmm. It just doesn’t feel good, you know? 

To end on a lighter (ish) note, going to talk about shippy things for a sec — so I have many headcanon universes that float around in my brain, but generally speaking when I’m writing Romana/Leela fic or thinking about the possibility of their relationship being romantic at some point, I tend to go for things happening between them later in the audios (ideally post-Enemy Lines), with the early series just being endless unresolved tension. But gosh there is a part of me that’s interested in the disaster universe where they do get romantically involved with each other post-Spirit (because as far as the early series go, it does feel like it has to be post-Spirit, when Leela does make the choice to stay with Romana/for Romana on Gallifrey) because oh god that’s so emotionally messy. (It’s only been six months and change since Leela’s husband first disappeared! We’re only two episodes away from Andred’s death! She’s not in a healthy emotional space to be doing this right now, and neither is Romana, frankly! Especially given what’s going to happen in the next several episodes.....but oof wow there’s certainly a story to explore there). 

This was not a lighter note, I’m so sorry. Anyways, friendly reminder that I’m always down to go on and on about Romana/Leela, I have....so many feelings about them. Also if you’ve actually read through this entire post, wow and thank you??

"You should take a break, Buginette, I'll handle the rest," Adrien suggested, as he pried a heavy box out of Marinette's reluctant hands.

"I'm fine, Adrien, I've had to lift way heavier things than this when I worked in the bakery, you know." Marinette countered, not wanting to make him do all the work.

"That's true, but you've been on your feet running around all day. All I had to do was stand, sit, and pose. You need a break, I don't." Adrien pointed out. "Besides, it's nearly your birthday. Birthday girls deserve extra breaks."

Marinette couldn't lie, she really did need a break. "Fine, but after a half-hour power nap—or maybe an hour—I'm going to keep helping you unpack. We're a team, and don't you forget it." Raising on her tiptoes, Marinette gave Adrien a sweet peck before retreating to the bedroom to lie on their newly purchased and delivered king size bed. It was unnecessarily huge but Adrien had been adamant about purchasing it. And to be fair, Marinette did like to starfish in her sleep.

Adrien smiled and checked out her cute butt as she walked away. Those pants made her ass look divine.

Shaking away those thoughts, Adrien set the hefty box down and continued to bring the other large boxes into the living room.

After he had finished handling the heaviest boxes, Adrien decided to give his muscles a break by unpacking the ones that he had already brought in.

After emptying a few of them, he came across one that had very interesting contents.

At first, he wasn't exactly sure what he was looking at. Each item or group of items had a label on them, such as AA22, AA35, AA67.

As he puzzled over it and looked through it some more, he noticed the labels had every number from 21 to 80.

He was still a bit confused and decided to look at the items themselves, only to realize every single object had been wrapped. Some were wrapped in wrapping paper, some were in gift boxes, some were in gift bags.

So they must have been gifts. For almost 60 different people? That seemed strange.

He studied the labels again. What did AA stand for?

Plagg woke up from his nap at that moment.

Floating over towards Adrien from his napping spot on a shelf, he saw the contents of the box that Adrien had been looking into. "Hey, wow, look at all those things! Those must be the gifts that Sugarcube told me about!" Plagg sniffed the air. "She has bad taste in gifts. There's no cheese!"

"What gifts? For who? From who?" Adrien quirked an eyebrow.

"Pfft, of course you can't figure it out. You never change." Plagg rolled his eyes, but there was a tiny fond smirk on his face as he explained to his chosen, "Apparently, your girlfriend is a little obsessed with you. She made gifts for you for every birthday you have up until the age of 60!"

"Huh, but the labels go up to 80?" Adrien said absentmindedly, looking down at the gifts again.

"Guess she added more since then," Plagg shrugged.

Suddenly, what Plagg had told Adrien finally managed to register in his head.

"These are for me?!?" Adrien practically shrieked. His eyes widened when he remembered Marinette was sleeping. Hopefully, he hadn't woken her up. With a hushed tone, he asked, "Are you just messing with me again?"

"I do enjoy doing that. I should have done that!" Plagg facepalmed. "Missed opportunities."

"Plagg!"

"Jeeeez, calm down, kid. I am just messing with ya. Well, I mean, just now I was. Before I was actually telling the truth. Pigtails was, and still is, for some unfathomable reason, head over heels for you." At that, Plagg was done with the subject and flew away, likely to go find Tikki.

Which left Adrien flabbergasted. Gobsmacked. Astounded. Amazed.

"Wow. She really loves me," he mumbled to himself as if this was somehow new information to him. He felt his heart swell, brimming with overwhelming, warm love and utter bliss.

He sighed dreamily, how did he ever get so lucky?

Suddenly, he couldn't wait to turn a year older each year. He couldn't wait to see each and every birthday gift she made him/bought him (he assumed handmade, but he would still be perfectly happy with purchased gifts).

His thoughts swirled as he thought of wonderful possibilities of what the gifts could be. Then he came to the realization.

She made him gifts up until he was 80!

That basically meant she planned on spending her whole life with him!

This new revelation sent him over the moon. He was in paradise. He couldn't even remember how it felt to be sad in this moment. His girlfriend was the epitome of his happiness and well-being.

As he immersed himself in these wonderful thoughts, he failed to notice his fully awakened partner enter the room.

"Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!" Marinette screamed, completely snapping him out of his reverie and scaring the crap out of him.

"What's the matter, Mari?!" Adrien asked in alarm as he turned to look at his beautiful lobster-red girlfriend.

"Y-you! W-what's that in front of you?!" Marinette's stutter returned full force as she panicked.

"Your birthday gifts for me," he replied calmly, not seeing the issue. "Don't worry, I didn't open any of them!"

His sunshine smile did little to soothe her frazzled nerves.

"Buhhh. But! Aren't you, you know..." Marinette looked down as she quickly mumbled the final part of her sentence, "FreakedoutbyhowcreepyIam?"

"What? Why would I be?" Adrien looked genuinely confused. "The fact that you planned out gifts for the next 60 years of my life shows how incredible thoughtful you are. Not to mention, how creative you are to be able to think of what to give me at each age. Oh! And not to mention, how organized you are for planning so far in advanced!" he spoke with pure excitement.

"R-really?" she asked, still unsure.

"Definitely! And it especially makes me happy to know you want to give me a gift every year until I'm 80!" Adrien was still smiling, though it suddenly morphed into a sly smirk when he added, "Which basically means you want to spend the rest of your life with me."

Marinette squeaked but she couldn't deny it. And his smolder was paralyzing her. No one would be able to form a response when being looked at like he was looking at her.

A moment later, his sweet smile returned. "Besides, I've got a 10 page list of things that I can get you for future birthdays. I haven't purchased or made them yet, so I'm not quite as prepared as you, but I'm still just as obsessed with you as you are with me, if not more so. So don't sweat it, M'Lady Love."

He stood up abruptly and strode over to her, pulling her into a romantic kiss before she had a chance to grasp what was happening.

She melted once she had realized.

He peppered more kisses on her face and lips, finding her too irresistible to stop.

Eventually, he reluctantly pulled away and rested his forehead against hers.

"But out of all the birthday gifts in the world, my favourite will always be you."

MY THOUGHTS ON THE CLIPS: 

Clip 8:

Chloe and Lucille are holding the only conversation. Neither boy is talking or happy about them being there. In fact, the girls could have the conversation alone and it wouldn't have changed anything. Apparently, Chloe is oblivious to all of this. How god only knows. I maintain that I am worried about her lack of critical thinking skills. Because seriously she is missing some big hints.

Lucille is a bitch and horrible human being. First, she explicit told that Eliott failed to graduate, basically calling him an idiot, where the reality is probably he didn't go because of his mental illness. Then proceeds to guard his alcohol intake like a condescending parent. Storms off when Eliott rightfully tells her to fuck off.

Then when the boys leave, according to those text/DMS Chloe send Lucas TELLS A STRANGER ABOUT HIS PARTNER MENTAL ILLNESS WITHOUT HIS CONSENT TO GAIN SYMPATHY POINTS!!!!!!!!

AND CHLOE'S REACTION!! OMG!! THE ALL: ELIOTT HAS A BIG PROBLEM, POOR LUCILLE DROVE ME UP THE FUCKING WALL!!!!!!!!

POOR LUCILLE FOR WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!!

I REALLY HOPE THIS THE SHOW DOENS'T ASPECT ME TO FEEL ANY SORT OF SYMPATHY FOR EITHER LUCILLE OR CHLOE AFTER THIS!!!

EDIT: @chillisak and @fake-muggle in the notes have pointed out the texts were probably not about the mental illness. I have answered to @chillisak (but forgot to put the @ in the answer because I am on my pc and notes are weird) in the notes but I am afraid my tone was a bit harsh, So sorry about that. I wanted to thank you both for pointing this out to me. 

I am still a lot pissed at Lucille and Chloe both. And the poor Chloe still bothers me A LOT. Because to me it was clear as day that Lucille started that fight by bring up the fact that Eliott “failed” his exam when they probably both know that he skipped them because of his mental illness. Eliott probably felt like an idiot and scoleded child, plus all of that happen in front of two strangers (well yes one of them was the boy he likes, but Lucille doesn’t know that). So to me Chloe’s message still feels like a load of bull. 

Maybe I am identityfying a bit to much with Eliott, because I also had school set backs because of mental illness. And if a partner would bring that shit up to people she doesn’t know all that much I would feel like crap, like a failure. And knowing that someone would agree with them if I called them out on it like Chloe did it in the text really gets on my nerves. I feel like Eliott had the absolute right to be harsh on Lucille and say those things. In fact I think he should have broken up with her on the spot. 

So to conclude. Lucille might not have been the horrible human I thought about and revelaed his mental illeness but I still don’t think she deserves a Poor Lucille :( message or any sort of sympathy for the cheating. 

(I still wish the cheating was not there in the first place, but that is another story)

NOW onto the good stuff:

OMG!! Eliott was so adorable. I thought we'd be alone!! I DIED!!!!! Both boys are so much more forward and honest about what they are feeling for each other already!! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!! And Lucas Yeah me too right after Eliott says that!!! It's so soft and small. Like he was afraid of it but at the same time wanted Eliott to know that!!! THEY ARE SO CUTE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Clip 9:

Eliott and Lucas running and laughing together is what both boys deserve. To happy and together and away from horrible mean people!!!

Lucas is far more willing to break into strange places then Isak and Martino were. Which either means that he is super gone for Eliott already or that he is a little less of a "good boy"

Also, Eliott saying that this place is favorite because it's calm and quiet!! MY BABY, I WANT TO HUG HIM!!!!

Eliott is so smooth, like, this time is special and I don't usually take anyone here. OMG!! He has no chill!!!

Lucas was so insecure after that line like he thought that it would be weird that this handsome guy decided he should be the first to bring here!! MY POOR SAD INSECURE CHILD!!!!!

SO MUCH EYE CONTACT!!!! THE TEASING!!! THE WALKING BACKWORDS OMG!!! Eliott!!!!! Lucas is so smitten!!

Eliott is such a dork and a little shit. With all the teasing, the almost kiss fake out, then he goes under the rain. Just to recreate Polaris! I love him.

THE SYMBOLISM!!! The fact that Eliott is under the rain, but Lucas esitate, almost like he is afraid of crossing the threshold!!!

LUCAS PUTS HIS HANDS UP FOR ELIOTT TO REACH OUT AND GRAB!! THEY ARE MEETING IN THE MIDDLE!!! THE HAND HOLDING!!! THAT LITTLE MOMENT WHERE THEY ARE JUST LOOKING AT EACH OTHER AND SMILING!!!! PROBABLY THINKING HE LIKES ME TOO!! HE LIKES ME TOO!!!

And then THE KISS!!! GLORIOUS!!!!!!!!!!!! Eliott just goes for it!! The hight difference is also very clear during the kiss. Like Lucas has to keep his head all the way up!! It's so cute!!!!!!!!!!! I AM DEAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I love how the music works in this clip like it stop when Eliott first goes in the rain and then resumes when they kiss!!

And then both boys are under the rain!! Drenched!!! Finishing the symbolism, making sure that they are both on the other side!!! WOW!!!

THAT HUG AT THE END!!!!!!!!!!!! I'M DYING!!! OMG!! THEY ARE SO CUTEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
