Crafting Comments on Fics

So with Comment Fest approaching - and with the possibility of bot-generated comments undermining the value of reader-writer engagement - I thought it might be helpful to provide a short explanation of some different approaches I use in crafting comments, in order to identify a few places to get started for anyone who has wanted to leave more (or more detailed) comments but who feels unsure how to get going. 

This is far from an exhaustive list, and the categories are designed to allow for a mix-and-match construction with varying levels of development (from basic to more elaborate). At the heart of it, I think of commenting as a practice of paying attention to what I notice in a story and then crafting language to share those observations with the writer. So each of these categories starts from something we might notice when we read.

1. Affect: how the fic affected you/made you feel

This is a great place to start if commenting feels intimidating, because you’re drawing from your own emotional responses. A basic template might be something like “_____ made me ________.” You can pick a particular moment (the scene with the tooka infestation, the kiss in the Denny’s parking lot, the moment we realize character x was dead the whole time, etc.) or focus on the fic as a whole; and you can describe the effect in simple terms (made me cry, smile, laugh, feel soft, etc.) or extravagant ones (made me want to roll myself into the sea, made me feel like I had ascended to a new astral plane, shook me so deeply it registered a 10.3 on the Richter scale). The idea is to take one or more responses you had to the fic and let the writer know what they were/what about the story produced them. 

2. Memory: what from the fic has stuck with you

If a story has an especially strong effect on you, you might also let the author know what particular moments, lines, or images are going to linger in your mind after you finish reading. After identifying the detail(s) you want to flag (if you were going to bookmark this fic with a note to remind Future You which one it is, what image or scene or plot premise or line of dialogue would go in the “the one with the ___________�� slot?), you can describe the way it’s sticking with you in general terms (I’m still thinking about it, chewing on it, rotating it like a Hot Pocket in a microwave), or you can point to some of the reasons why it’s sticking with you (it captures character x’s whole deal so well, it reminds me of y moment in the film/tv show/comic, it crystallizes a larger theme in the story so effectively). 

3. Appreciation: what in the fic seems beautiful, artful, striking

In this approach you’re giving a writer a sense of what stood out to you aesthetically about the story: the moments that made you feel like “put a frame around that fucker because I want to keep staring at it.” This category can feel tricky because there might be terminology specific to the form that we’re not familiar with, so it can feel hard to describe what exactly makes a moment strike us as well-crafted. But we might think about the appreciation approach as having a basic template: “_____ is so ________.” The first slot can be either general (the whole story, a larger scene, the way the author writes dialogue or description or a major character) or very specific (copying and pasting a particular line or passage, identifying a pattern of imagery, pointing out the way the author narrates a specific kind of experience). And the second slot can be just one adjective (beautiful, visceral, unsettling, powerful, stunning, lyrical) or a more elaborate evaluation (so effective at conveying emotions, so hard-hitting after the slow build-up, so vivid I feel like I’m actually there). 

4. Discovery: what the fic showed you/made you think about

Sometimes you read a fic that makes you think about the media/the ship/the characters in a new way, and that’s a really powerful thing to share with the writer. As with the other approaches, you can frame this in terms of the fic as a whole or pull out particular lines or plot points, and you can either describe the effect on your thinking in general terms (this changed my brain chemistry, this blew my mind, this is canon for me now) or in specific ones (I’d never thought about x moment in the film that way before, but now I’m going to think about it that way every time; the line where character x says y was like a lightbulb moment for me - it clarified so much about x’s motivations; I would never have thought about this show as being about z theme, but after reading this fic, I’m seeing z everywhere).

So there you have it: a non-exhaustive list of things we notice about stories and some ways to talk about that. I hope it’s helpful. And of course, when in doubt or when pressed for energy, a string of emojis, a keyboard smash, or an all-caps “I LOVED THIS!!!” are also wonderful ways to share a little love with fic writers.

Annibirthday Comment Fest

It's our comm annibirthday on Monday - the be_compromised livejournal was created 6th May (first post 7th May) 2012. We are 12! Inspired by the Zero Comment Challenge and a chat on our comm discord, we'd like to gift comments to creative works with zero (or few) comments, hopefully spreading some joy, appreciation, and encouragement in our corner of fandom.

How Does Comment Fest Work?

From the 6 to 31 May, to comment on creative works with zero, or only a few, comments. (We're not setting a limit on this but maybe 12 or less in keeping with the theme if you're the kind of person who likes a guide.) We'd like to focus on clintasha works, or works featuring Clint and/or Natasha to support our corner of fandom. One way of doing this is to search works on AO3 for clintasha and sort by comments, but we're all ears for other ideas. We appreciate recs of any works featuring Clint and/or Natasha which will boost those comments! You can leave recs in a comment to the DW post, on the comm discord recs channel, or link to a rec on tumblr and we'll reblog on the comm tumblr.

Of course if you're inspired please feel free to comment on works that could use more comments in any fandom, and to keep going after May! Those just won't count towards...

The Comment Fest Challenge

We know poeple like fun, no pressure challenges, so (inspired by the tumblr April fools boops) the following comment fest achievements are up for grabs:

- comments on 12 creative works - recs for 12 creative works, of those you've commented on during the fest - a daily comment throughout the fest or comments on 26 creative works in total

These are on the honour system. Comments on all creative works counts, not just fic. Please free to put forward other achievements, suggest fun achievement titles, create badges, and otherwise have fun with this!

Suggestions For Leaving Comments

If you're feeling stuck here's some suggestions for leaving comments. Feel free to share guides and other top tips!

If you reached the end of a fic, lingered looking at fan art, or replayed a fan vid, then just simply saying that you liked it will very much be appreciated! If you'd like to expand on that, you could add one/a few things that stood out that you liked. And if you liked it enough that you decided to bookmark it to view again, the creator would love to hear that too.

> I really liked this! / I really enjoyed this! / Thank you for writing this! > I liked when... / I especially liked... / I loved the bit where... Could be with a brief explaination of the part you mean, or you could just copy and paste your favourite line(s). For art and other creative works maybe you liked the colours, the way the character's hair was drawn, the timing of the music and the visuals in a fanvid. > This part made me laugh... / Argh, it was so sad when... Creators love to hear your reactions. That can be copy and pasting lines and then adding 'I loved this!', 'ARGH', Clint, no. I AM DETEREMIND TO FINISH THIS DAMN CARD BY THE END OF THE YEAR THO yes I only have a month SHUT UP I CAN DO THIS Arcane season 2 powers me

Rec list time below the cut! Also including one of the fics from the first bingo I got cause I remembered it, lol. (Also, if you haven't watched Act 1 of Arcane, season 2, some of the fics included here will hold spoilers for Act 1! So be wary!)

"Of Atreus and Calliope" by ArlenianChronicles Slams fist, swiftly followed by my head, on table. Inhales sharply, lifts head- THIS. FIIIIIIICCCCCCCCCCCCC- Have you ever wanted to read a fic starring protective big bro Atreus with little sis Calliope going on a cross country/... continental road trip with a healthy dose of family drama, angst, fluff and sibling bonding, followed by a slice-of-life style with the first three seasonings mentioned above coming in spades? Maybe some Sindri grappling with his feelings and trauma as a side dish? And some Atreboda for the sauce? THEN BOY OH BOY DO I HAVE THE FIC FOR YOU! Essentially, it's exactly what I just described. Atreus more or less accidentally kidnaps Calliope from Elsyium which brings her back to life (Kratos' kin are just built different, ig) and the two end up going on a cross country AND continental journey through Greece and the Roman Empire as they try to get back to Midgard, making friends and enemies along the way. Once they do, Calliope learns how to adjust to life in Jotunheim, gets to create a Calliope Found Family Collection, meets a still very angry Sindri and Atreus... Atreus gets to try and figure out how to tell his dad "hey, your daughter's back!" without sending his old man to the grave for the... what, 10th time? I'm really oversimplifying it, but this is already long enough, lol.

Keep in mind, this was written before Valhalla came out, so that's why some things might seem a little off. Also, it's set in the God of War universe. There's a decent amount of canon typical violence in it (also, istg everyone in the cast needs therapy, lmao). It's so good, guys, it's so. GOOD. URGH

"don't do anything you'll regret" by Perfectharmonyloveschaos Have you ever wondered how you make the saddest and most horrifying part of a thing, whether it be a video game, movie, TV show, book, comic or whatever else, EVEN MORE horrifying and sad than it already is? No? Well, too bad, I'm introducing a fic to you that managed to do that anyways. I was left SPEECHLESS when I finished reading it, all I knew was that felt the jumble of emotions I did when Brok died but WORSE. And honestly, that's a pretty damn impressive feat.

Uh, in regards to TWs... Well, how many of you know the myth where Loki gets his mouth sewn shut? Cause, uh... Odin does that to Atreus. And it's violent. Also Brok still dies, so.

"Nightmares Everlasting" by tinycrown So good so good so good so SO good, holy shit- (this can be applied to ALL of their GoW fics, lol) Basic plot, Atreus has a vision of the prophecy where his dad dies at Thor's hand, and DOES NOT LIKE IT. Featuring good dad Kratos caring for his son during the aftermath of the vision. My GODS the way this person writes Atreus scratches an itch in my brain SO WELL

"Burnt Primrose" by fayeerie A very good fic following Freyr and his experiences with fire. He doesn't like it very much. Featuring a little study on his relationship with Freya pre marriage to Odin.

Freyr gets set on fire here, and while it's not terribly graphic, it could still be quite uncomfy for some, so tread carefully!

"serendipity" by quoichiant A Yone/Aphelios slowburn AU, with extremely overworked and stressed out college student Aphelios, and a honestly done with life producer!Yone. So, funny story. I remembered I commented on this one for the rarepair spot not long after I uploaded my first bingo, lol. Then I wondered if they actually count as a rarepair, so I decided to check. The League of Legends fandom on AO3 has 19,515 works (at the time of checking). Of those works, the Yone/Aphelios pairing has 56. Yeah, I think they count, at least for me and my tastes, XD

"Got Your Heart In A Headlock" by GerardRay_15 A CaitVi fic. A very good, very tender, very loving CaitVi fic. I sorely needed this, lmao.

It's implied that Vi has a past of sexual abuse in this one, so tread carefully!

"If you want me to, I'll share my heart" by N3VERAGOD Just a sweet, fluffy CaitVi fic that I DESPERATELY needed after the gut punch known as episode 3 of season 2 (iykyk)

It's implied these two fucked the night before the fic takes place, and they're both naked, although nothing is ever explicitly stated (minus some kiss attacks)

"Of the Northmost Winds and Skies" by xxiyu I feel like this is one of the more famous HiJack fics out there, lol. And for good reason! SUCH a good fic, always happy to come back to it if I need a pick me up. Another 'Jack gets yeeted back to the past' fic, but this time with Jaime and Baby Tooth along for the ride! And not only do they meet the Berkians, but they also meet an enemy I think Jack would've liked to have never met for the rest of his life, lol. Also, if you like slowburn, HERE YOU GO! YOU GET... good, lord, I think like, 19-ish chapters of pining?? I think halfway through it I started yelling out loud, "oh, would you just kiss already, you dumb gay fucks(affectionate)??", if that gives you any idea how well it was written, lol.

Aaaand, that's it for this round! With Arcane season 2 here, I'll probably be satiating myself between Acts with fics, so hopefully I'll be able to finish the last four spots in quick succession! Still super happy I decided to do this challenge - my confidence needed it, and I think it's even been helping a little with my social anxiety?? Who knows, lol

I like seeing this!) but it makes me think about how the culture around fandom has shifted since I started writing back in 2009. I'll share my thoughts in a readmore, but before I can color your opinion: POLL TIME!

down bad by praise_lilith/ @lightyaoigami (lawlight) college au in which light and L have a drunken hookup at a college party. features bad sex and a particularly sharp character study of light. praise_lilith has a number of excellent aus but i have selected this one bc i love it & think about it daily

white note by @oloreandil a retelling of death note as snow white. i love this very deeply

throw me in the deep end, watch me drown by @zenyteehee (lawlight) canon divergence, in which light has an eating disorder and L has various addictions. huge fan of this. i'm looking you in the eyes and telling you 20k is a short fic ik ik but i promise it's worth it. i don't usually like recovery stories but this one spoke to me

kind of long so either learn to read as as fast as gevanni can write or just leave a comment on the first chapter idk it's fine the hinterland doctrine by halfpromise (lawlight & others) this is such a classic but that doesn't mean everyone on earth knows about it, which is a tragedy and a shame. light is a politician; everyone is absolutely horrible; i want to eat the prose with a spoon.

oleander by @gigantomachy1916 (lawmane, some lawlight) yotsuba-era au in which L decides to focus on misa instead of light. this makes me feel insane because it feels more natural and sensible than the actual polot; also some of the best characterizations of misa and L in the universe

It's a fantastic fic that I'm dying to see completed. Stopme is a fantastic writer and I'll die on that hill.
