My entry for @creatingblackcharacters 's CBC Black History Month Challenge.

I recently watched a documentary about Nina Simone and figured she would be a perfect fit for this challenge.

I went for a simple portrait for this one since I wanted to focus less on composition and more on getting as many details as I could right.

I have no notes other than the fact that I wanted to depict her while on stage, hence the microphone. Her daughter mentioned in the documentary how she felt like she was truly free while performing and that really stuck with me.

Oh and her eyes. It was really hard for me to capture that kind of stern intensity she had in the reference picture I chose (I still don't think I'm quite there) . I think it gives her a really dignified, powerful look.
