My 2023 TBR (8/?)
Assorted women’s lit. I love Erica Jong. I have read a few of her poetry collections and Sappho’s Leap. I finally got a copy of Fear of Flying. I’m determined to read it before I turn 30. Her protagonist is 29 and I just love it when I can coordinate with the characters’ ages. I read Persuasion for the first time when I was 28, the same age as Austen’s heroine Anne Eliot. And I think that made the story all the more powerful for me. Persuasion is now my favorite Austen novel because of that experience.
I have been wanting to read both Anne Rice and Amy Tan for a long time as well. The Girl who Reads on the Metro was featured in one of Jack Edwards’ videos. Women in Their Beds (a short story collection) was up for a goodreads award I think within the last couple years- or it was nominated at least. I think that’s where I got it from. And I’ve heard good things about Come As You Are and it’s appeared on many suggestion lists for books on relationships, dating, and sex.

So AO3 is still down because of the DDOS attack yesterday and, while I know I have a Fanfiction.net account I think I'm actually going to get cracking on my TBR books list...first up, "Hold Me Closer Necromancer" by Lish McBride which my friend loaned me a while back and I haven't read yet

by: Jeneva Rose Published: Jul 3, 2020 Genre: Thriller, Mystery, Fiction 342 Pages, E-Book
★★★
GoodReads Synopsis:
Sarah Morgan is a successful and powerful defense attorney in Washington D.C. At 33 years old, she is a named partner at her firm and life is going exactly how she planned.
The same cannot be said for her husband, Adam. He is a struggling writer who has had little success in his career. He begins to tire of his and Sarah’s relationship as she is constantly working.
My Review: *** Spoiler Alert & Cursing ***
Let me work backward first. I wish Rose had really let Sarah stand up in her bad bitch era and really put Adam in his place. I wanted Sarah to run down her resume of all the things she did for that mediocre, half-twit of a man, and then say that she did what she did because he had her fucked up! Because he did!
Adam thought he was just going to run away with the waitress from the coffee shop! Sarah bought you a lake house. Sarah put herself through law school. Sarah put up with your lackluster career. Sarah financed everything about your life. And above everything else, Sarah put up with your mother! Adam, you really had her full circle fucked up.
There are so many characters that take your eyes off what is really going on. The sheriff's department is inadequate and everyone should have been fired. The way they all botched the case, overlooked evidence, blatantly ignored evidence, and didn't look into any viable suspects -- infuriated me. No police force should be that dumb. Of course, Adam is going to jail!
Oh and Adam! Top 5 dumbest characters of all time. The fact that he is an imbecile makes what I said earlier, much sweeter. He was the weakest link in this whole story and frankly again, he had Sarah fucked up.
The whole last chapter should have been summed up with, "Adam had the IQ of a peanut and I did what needed to be done." The End. I hated that she ended up with Bob... BOB?! Anne was pointless, could have kept that story too. Then Bob and Sarah have a daughter, Summer and she doesn't want Summer to depend on a man like her mom - boooooooo, tomato tomato tomato.
Sarah, you're a serial killer. You have three bodies on you.
Any why did Rose focus so heavily on the expensive labels when it came to what Sarah and Eleanor were wearing?
Speaking of Eleanor... I would have knocked that old lady's dentures into that little dangling thing that swings in the back of her throat (word to Cardi B). Eleanor also had Sarah fucked up.
One-Word Summary: Exhausting
Other Jeneva Rose books I've reviewed: One of Us is Dead

3.3.2023. Finished my classics quota for the month!
Where the heart is really attached, I know very well how little one can be pleased with the attention of anybody else. Everything is so insipid, so uninteresting, that does not relate to the beloved object! I can perfectly comprehend your feelings." - Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen.
For all that it makes for a great gothic satire, this might be my least favourite of Jane Austen's works. It is also my least favourite romantic austenian leads/pairing.
Individually, Mr. Tinley makes for a great character, He is delightfully jaded and worldly, with his biting sarcasm and his ability to charm the socks out of anyone in the room. Catherine, though, is a dull caricature of a naive schoolgirl; the quintessential heroine of a gothic romance. She is extremely sheltered and innocent in a way that just comes off as daft sometimes. Their relationship is very much skewed in his favour. I can't really bring myself to ship them in light of their uneven dynamic.

My 2023 TBR (5/12)
These are all classics I have yet to read (other than Wuthering Heights- this is one of my new copies). I included this copy of Wuthering Heights because I want to reread it next year since I might be doing my master’s thesis on it.

New year, new TBR list! But this year I've decided to be more reasonable about it (if that's even possible). I set another reading challenge on Goodreads for 50 books but unlike last year, I already have a few books that I would like to read.
The first part of my TBR list consists of books that are catching dust on my shelves for a long time and I would very much like to finally get to them:
1. Colleen Hoover - It Ends With Us
This book is constantly popping up on my Instagram. The overall controversy surrounding this book is probably the main reason why it's the first book on the list.
2. John Wray - The Lost Time Accidents
I have honestly no idea how this book ended up in our household. It's not a genre I usually read but I like to explore other genres so be it.
3. Laura Bates - Men Who Hate Women
I've already read a few chapters but since it's not an easy topic to read about, I have to take breaks from it. But even from those few chapters I was able to learn a lot and the world kind of makes... more sense.
4. Richard Osman - The Man Who Died Twice
Who doesn't want to read about seniors solving a crime? Twice?
5. Sarah Hogle - You Deserve Each Other
Okay, I know how I got this one. It was in a hurry in front of the cashier who said I can take one book from a selection of books on sale. And this one captured my attention. It still has my attention two years later after it sat untouched on my nightstand.
6. Lucinda Riley - The Seven Sisters
My mom loves this series. And she says I'll love it too.
7. Harlan Coben - Long Lost
I have the French translation so it will be a different kind of challenge. But I love Harlan Coben's books so hopefully, a different language won't stop me.
8. Christian Jacq - Ramsès
Again, it's in French. I'm taking my French class very seriously.
9. James Nestor - Breathe
I love educational books with a touch of personal history.
10. Elizabeth Gill - Nobody's Child
This is probably a book that I have the longest from those I mentioned in the list. I got it from a relative when I finally had enought courage to read in English.
11. Gail Honeyman - Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine
I loved the format of this book and the pages feel like a cushion.
As you can see, there are eleven books on this list. I plan to read one book from this list a month so it's not overwhelming and that I can still read new books or books from the library (a list of those will be published shortly after this one). I also want to dive more into these books because sometimes I read one and then jump onto the next one which is not sustainable for a very long time. So I will be posting a short review for every book I read.
