ok ok I think I've vaguely figured out some of my OCs backstory for Black Myth Wukong.

She goes by the name Oz (奥兹 Àozī ) - it's not her "real" name, jsut what she prefers to be called. You can find more BMW verse info and OC fanart under the tag Cepheus Baskerville. A head's up that I've had her since 2017 and I throw her into any fandom I am obsessed with, so her backstroy gets adjusted according to my current obsession.

She is a modern OC that gets isekai'd into fantasy ancient China. Oz has met the Monkey King before as a kid, spending summer at her great-grandfather's house, and he has some random sorts of knick knacks lying around in the attic, one of them being a magic object that serves as a portal between two worlds. He was buried under the mountain by then already, she'd bring snacks and food and cake over and visit him and he'd tell her stories of the Great Sage Equal to Heaven. Also time flows differently between the two worlds, what is a day in her world sometimes it would be weeks or months or years that passes for Sun Wukong. Being the dumb 5 years old kid she is, she promises that she will save the Monkey King one day. He chuckles at the declaration and plays along with it.

And then summer ends and her great-grandfather passes away, and she grows up and forgets about the Monkey King, at this point it's just a vaguely rememebered childhood memory of an imaginary friend of a lonely girl that loved mysteries and stories about heroes and adventures. to be honest, SWK also forgets about her LOL like my guy was buried under a mountain for 500 years and he probably watched a lot of mortals growing up and passing away, she was just another one of them albeit an odd one out. Thinks she is already pushing up daisies by the time he got out under the mountain and journeys west

Fast forward to when she turns 2X years old and inherits her great-granfathers house and everything that is inside, finds said magical portal object again and what dya know, time to fullfill her promise and """save""" Sun Wukong, or help his reincarnation on his journey to obtain all artifacts.

As to why her great-grandfather has a magical object like that - maybe her ancestors were from that other world and escaped into this one through said object (probably because the Celestial Court is being a dick) and settled down and got married and had kids. Maybe there is some magic in her blood that has been dormant for centuries and with being back in fantasy ancient China, it slowly becomes active again? I can imagine that sometimes when they bump into Celestial Court members they'd be like "you seem awfully familiar your face but idk why and I don't like that feeling". probably gets called a traitor by the court a lot because of the actions of her ancestors LOL

Greetings! I hope you're having an at least decent weekend. Is it just me or is Stephen Chow involved in a lot of jttw/swk centered media? & do you have anything to say about any of Stephen Chow's jttw/swk centered work?

Stephen Chow WAS Sun Wukong in what could be considered the most iconic Sun Wukong that changed the game. I'm not kidding that there could be a butterfly effect on how Stephen Chow's Wukong in the Chinese Odyssey became such a classic we see how it has affected games, shows, and movies even years later. Dare I say it but I think Stephen Chow could have been just as influential to Wukong's development in modern media as much as even Liu Xiao Ling Tong with how IMPACTFUL his Wukong was.

I have to say that Stephen Chow does have a certain scene of humor that you see in all his movies, not just Journey to the West. He can be raunchy, violent, and nonsensical so I would say that his style of movies might not land with everyone but Stephen Chow undoubtedly always puts a lot of heart into his characters which is what really makes people connect with his movies. He is a master of incorporating meaningful connections through the most ridiculous and insane situations that humans could find themselves in and that is part of his charm seeing both the humor and the tragedy in life as they often go hand and hand. I would suggest reading more about his style here since I think it puts into words how his art form is expressed.

But there can be a fascinating conversation to say just HOW much his Sun Wukong has influenced even modern Journey to the West media. Chinse Odessey was nearly 30 years ago and yet its impact is still being seen today in movies that are directly related to his films, versus movies and shows that he is directly or indirectly involved in today.

Even in movies that he is NOT involved in like Monkey King: The One and Only (2021) 大圣无双 where the Wukong actor is basing his performance clearly on Demon Strikes Back (2017) Wukong. Not to mention nearly EVERY SINGLE Wukong x SO plot line where the SO dies in the end could be traced back to Chinese Odyssey. If you hate how much Wukong's love interests are killed off in media, you can somewhat blame Stephen Chow, not for doing it first, but for doing it WELL and then dozens of directors for years to come trying to recapture that magic but falling short of what made people love that tragic romance in the first place.

Chinese Odessey was made in 1995 and led to the light novel Bio of Wukong which was made in 2000 and at least 4 more movies and its own TV show. The Bio of Wukong was so popular that it led to the inspiration of Asura Online game based is the story and its own movie Immortal Demon Slayer. Stephen Chow continued to make his own movies Conquering the Demon and Demon Strikes Back. He also goes on to help produce Monkey King 2023 and even makes plans to help produce an entire TV series based on his own universe. Asura Online was worked on by Game Science who continued to work on the creation of Black Myth Wukong. This isn't even to mention the spin-offs, sequels, and prequels to Chow's movies and still how they are influencing directors today.

I can't express how much Chow has impacted the very image of Sun Wukong from being a fighter to a tragic hero. I even took from an ENTIRE CHPATER from Transforming Monkey: Adaptation and Representation by Hongmei Sun bout the CULTURAL impact that fans had with Chinese Odessey and how it became such a cult classic. He was the one to really reshape what Wukong could mean to people, not just a hero in an action movie, but a tragic figure that is forced to give up his individualism for the sake of saving the world because no one else can. That the burden of being 'Sun Wukong' can be relatable to anyone and anyone can see their own struggles with how Wukong tries not just to fight demons, but also fight himself.

I have so many feelings on the intricacies of how Wukong's character changes throughout each generation and each audience across countries and what he means to each new audience but never loses what makes him so beloved and keeps him still going strong after 400 years. And I think that Stephen Chow plays a huge and critical part in how Wukong has changed yet again in the public eye. Wukong going from a pure heroic figure to now a tragic hero who has all the power in the world but still finds himself falling short of what he desires in life. I think that this was a vital step in show the complexity and having more directors and the audience toy with the notion of Wukong's internal battle with his identity versus him always just fighting physical battles.

I will say that Chow's influence did lead to the popularity of the Journey to the West Conspiracy Theory which I am not personally a fan of. It is not that it can't be fun or interesting but moreso I believe that this theory has been drawn out far too long in the past 20 years and that it is time for a new nuance perspective to take its place. Genres have waves of new tropes and cliches and I do believe the 'heaven bad, yaoguai misunderstood' has been played out a tad too long to be charming anymore. I think this was a vital step in Wukong’s and Journey to the West adaptions but I also believe that now more can be built upon this premise to allow for more creative ideas that reflect a more modern audience.

I think that the audience that has grown up with Chow's work (Chinese Odessey at least) is now at the age where they can produce and create their own material and we are still seeing how this audience is echoing the same statements of Chow's Tragic Hero standpoint. I don't know what else I can say that I haven't said before but the sheer magnitude of changing a character's image is shocking and I hope that we see what new form Sun Wukong shall take!

Plum just keeps finding Mihou listening to "Jenny" by Studio Killers in the dark and is like "oh dude, deja vu."

Meanwhile with the SWKs;

Shihou: "What does love feel like?" Peach, eating: "Feels like you wanna sit on the beach and eat fruit together forever." Smokey, dramatically: "That your very heart has been stolen from you and you hesistate to retrieve it." Dasheng, chuckling: "Like you would walk into Diyu just to see them smile." Ace: "Like you would die for them. Kill for them. Either way what bliss." Starfruit: "They can make you feel the best and worst things like UGH!!" *frustated loud groan* Cherry, tail curled into a heart: "Like you wanna burn heaven together while smooching." *giggles and kicks feet in air* Sugar: "When the thought of being two and us makes you smile!" Shihou, face red and determined: "I feel all those things about Mihou!!" *gets kinda sad* "But I don't think he feels the same way." All the SWKs who've seen Peachbuds interact: "Odds are; HE DOES."

Most of the LEMs overhear this convo and are like "Aww!!!"

And oh gosh the actual Peachbuds confession would be so awkward and messy. They're teenagers after all.

Mihou & Shihou: *about to have a dramatic kiss moment* Ginseng, interupting: "C'mon! I dont want to see that - not today. While you two were professing your love for eachother, I found the Havoc Demon's cave."

Also the comparison to Jumanji 2017 is making me think of the "Baby I Love Your Way"/Dance Fight scene but with Mihou as Martha. He sees all his alternates as these beautiful warriors, femme fatale-esque fighters, or charismatic idols, and he's feeling like "oh... I'm just me." :(

All the other LEMs disagree full-heartedly. They think Mihou has figured things out a lot better than they did at his age. A big feelings/self-esteem talk happens where the LEMs talk about aspects of themselves they don't like/praise the "flaws" the others see in themselves.

Which versions of SWK do you think would get along with each other and which would throw hands?

OKAY so of the Monkey Kings I remember off the top of my head I think that the 1986, 1964, and 1592 SWKs would get along great on account of being communal grandpas who love their monkey families very much (they spend the majority of their time showing each other wallet photos of all 47,000 of their grandchildren), the 2017 and 2021 SWKs are sitting together at the edgy cool kids tables snarking at each other and maybe gearing up for a fistfight but neither one wants to be the loser who lets the other's words get under his skin, 1999 and the other 2021 SWK are kevetching but also talking fondly about the joys and trials of being a mentor to a quasi-deity, and 2015 SWK is acting as a dramatically stressed babysitter to 2009 SWK but they both end up having a great time.

Talking About Huawei Exposure

We try to keep up with current events here at Calcbench, so we saw the news earlier this week that U.S. prosecutors have indicted Chinese telecom giant Huawei Technologies on charges of stealing intellectual property and violating trade sanctions against Iran and North Korea.

Corporate disclosure geeks that we are, immediately we then asked: What are U.S. companies disclosing about their dealings with Huawei? Could any of those companies somehow be sucked into the legal and geopolitical vortex swirling around Huawei?

Turns out, more than a few companies do have something to disclose about Huawei. Here’s what we found.

Micron Technology ($MU) received a comment letter from the SEC earlier this year, where SEC staffers were asking about Micron’s exposure to Huawei. Since Micron sells its chip components to Huawei, and Huawei stands accused of selling its products to Iran, Syria, and North Korea — how does Micron work to ensure its products don’t end up in those places?

Micron’s response on 3 July 2018—

With respect to Huawei, the Company sells products that are incorporated into some of Huawei’s mobile phone products for the consumer market, server products for the enterprise market, and other products. Micron requires that Huawei sign and abide by the Company’s “End User Certification and Agreement to End Use Restrictions”... Micron has no visibility into the sale of the millions of Huawei products that are sold worldwide. However, Huawei is required to comply with the Terms and Conditions of Sale as well as the provisions in the End-user Certification and Agreement to End Use Restrictions.

So that is one potential issue for U.S. companies: Are their export control compliance programs addressing Huawei exposure effectively? If not, that could lead to future issues with the Justice Department.

Meanwhile, Cisco Systems ($CSCO) disclosed on 6 Sept. 2018 that it agreed to pay $127 million in legal and indemnification costs to T-Mobile, which was in patent litigation with Huawei. The disclosure:

On January 15, 2016, Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. (“Huawei”) filed four patent infringement actions against T-Mobile US, Inc. and T-Mobile USA, Inc. (collectively, “T-Mobile”) in federal court in the Eastern District of Texas. Huawei alleged that T-Mobile’s use of 3GPP standards to implement its 3G and 4G cellular networks infringed 12 patents. Huawei's infringement allegations for some of the patents were based on T-Mobile's use of products provided by us in combination with those of other manufacturers. T-Mobile requested indemnity by Cisco with respect to portions of the network that use our equipment. On December 22, 2017, the Eastern District of Texas court dismissed Huawei's four lawsuits after the parties reached settlement, and T-Mobile's indemnity request was subsequently resolved.

During fiscal 2018, we recorded legal and indemnification settlement charges of $127 million to product cost of sales in relation to these matters. At this time, we do not anticipate that our obligations regarding the final outcome of the above matters would be material.

Qualcomm ($QCOM) lists Huawei as one of its customers (along with ZTE Corp., another Chinese telecom giant already sanctioned by the feds in 2017):

Further, the majority of the leading handset and other wireless device companies (including Huawei, LG, Microsoft, Oppo, Samsung, Sony, vivo, Xiaomi and ZTE) have royalty-bearing licenses under our patent portfolio…

Skyworks Solutions ($SWKS) also lists Huawei as a customer, and in Skyworks’ segment reporting discloses that Huawei accounted for 10 percent of the company’s revenue in 2017 — that is, roughly $365 million of Skyworks’ total $3.65 billion in revenue that year.

We’re more curious about whether corporate disclosures related to Huawei (or ZTE, for that matter) will change in the future. For example, Micron isn’t the only company that sells goods to either of those companies. If the SEC starts asking more questions about export controls, U.S. filers will need to respond with more information. If companies rely heavily on Huawei for revenue, how might they respond if U.S.-China relations strain those business ventures?

Is there any adaptation where SWK does stay happy with his love interest?

There is surprisingly not a LACK of SOs that do end up with a Wukong but just that you have to be willing to accept it as "Wukong" so to speak.

In most circumstances, adaptions that would have Wukong with an SO and have the circumstances where they are able to get together are without a doubt going to be more Alternative Universes where the setting is completely different or Appropriations where they are more character-inspired than anything else.

This is all the one that I am AWARE of at the moment but as you can see a lot more Retellings/Continuations are where Wukong's SO dies and this is mostly for the case of keeping the status quo and moving on with the original plot. They are more like additions of the OG story that let Wukong have his character moment.

It is far more with Alternatives Universes or with other Continuations that there are more 'alive at least' SOs, some in the case of reincarnation or being in a different setting for the plot otherwise. Some of them don't even end up WITH WUKONG (most likely save their lives).

Just depends on what you are watching but traditionally Wukong does not have alive SOs for the sake of the plot/character development, while in other he has them alive where he is less Sun Wukong or is it taken out of the xiyouji context.

If you have any more please let me know cause a lot of plot summaries just DONT include any mention of a romance subplot. I can only imagine WHY.

Internet's latest conspiracy theory: April the pregnant giraffe is just an April Fools' joke

It just can't be a coincidence that April the Giraffe, the perpetually pregnant and viral video star, is named April and that April Fools' Day is coming up.

The internet's latest conspiracy theory involving the upstate New York zoo's giraffe and its much-watched livestream of her very, very long pregnancy (she was due in mid-February and giraffes gestate for about 15 months) is that it's all an elaborate April Fools' joke.

With the pranksters' holiday of April Fools fast approaching, April the Giraffe could be a really long joke that duped everyone. Come on, look at her; she seems to just be chilling — so don't discount this as an epic prank yet. 

Hundreds of thousands of viewers have been watching the zoo's livefeed daily for weeks, so this would be a massive prank if so. This can't just be an innocent #GiraffeWatch phenomenon.

Not to mention the Harpursville, New York-based Animal Adventure Park, which is closed for its off-season, has been raking it in. They now have sponsors — notice the Toys R Us logo on the bottom of the stream. And the "learn how to sponsor" button on their dedicated April the Giraffe website. Different companies are vying for a spot on the boring as hell spellbinding video that everyone is glued to.

The April Fools theory's premise is simple: April isn't pregnant. We've been watching this feed for nothing. April Fools! April totally got you!

So there's that. Except Wednesday the zoo gave an update that made it sounds like April's delivery day could soon be upon us. Maybe. The team posted on Facebook that they couldn't confirm active labor, but "we do have discharge that would suggest the count down to calf has begun! Mammary development is on point."

The vet and her caretakers are on standby (duh), but they said it could still be a matter of hours or days. 

This isn't the first conspiracy theory April has sparked. With so many viewers' eyes glued on a small zoo's giraffe pen since February many have suggested this is all just a social experiment, a fake video on loop, or the now-famous trolling incident about whether April would give birth to an egg or a calf.

Update

So it's 1/26/2017 and a lot happened in the last week... Apparently I lost my job 3 weeks ago... i was told they would hold it for me but a couple days ago I got an exit survey... I am treasurer of the social work organization at my school (yay) I have an interview tomorrow morning for a placement at START which is a child abuse recovery/prevention center. 2 of my profs this semester are on the board of directors at said agency? One of the swk faculty at my school is the president (literally that woman does so much on top of being a fantastic mom and teacher she's on several boards and is a social worker at a local er) and the other guy actually teaches the graduate counselling program and is the vice president but he's teaching an undergrad family violence course this semester for the first time in I think 8 years? So lots of pressure but it'll be a good learning experience. To get to said intervieq I have to spend over an hour on 3 different busses but it'll be worth it, my interview isn't until 10:15 but I'm going to get there at 9:20 in case something goes wrong with the busses it gives me an hour to call him and correct the mistake.
