Y'all can keep complaining about the lack of queer representation in anime, and the fact that when there is, it's usually censored. I mean, it breaks my heart to see that in 2022, a certain studio felt the need to cover up a kiss scene with a very convenient shot of a sword (Requiem of the Rose King, I'm looking at you!) Hell, I'm all for demanding more from these studios. It took us a while to get to Yuri On Ice where we had a gay relationship at the forefront (which, might I add, also had a kiss scene that was censored, a choice made outside of the creator's hands), and only about 5 years ago did Bloom Into You get adapted, plus Given shortly after that. Yeah, it's taken way too long for progressive anime to enter the limelight. Sure, there are a few wonderful queer series out there today (ex. Stranger by the Shore & Sasaki and Miyano) but when another series takes a step back from where we are, it's disappointing to say the least. That doesn't mean we should give up hope though. I believe it's important that we're grateful for what we have, and remember that anime won't always spell it out for us (cough cough SK8: the Infinity cough cough), and that's something we're unfortunately going to have to live with. Have hope, my friends. And if you're looking for a pick me up, a David Wald dub is always the way to go!

…Eddie’s Elegy…

Two years ago today, my family and I binged the entirety of Season 4 over the course of 12 hours. In the days after that, these two slowly overtook my 3 year long TF2 hyperfixation, and have since been the catalyst for my journey in writing and drawing. To commemorate this, I’ve taken to redrawing the very first Steddie fanart I ever made, based on Eda’s Requiem from The Owl House (and have steadily redrawn less and less tbh-)

Context: One of my first ever ST headcanons was that Steve did orchestra before he was allowed to do sports. In this scenario, he found an old violin in the Creel house and stole it. He then stayed behind with Eddie and Dustin to accompany Eddie’s performance. And bc I was still bitter about Eddie’s death, Steve also kept Eddie from the self sacrifice, both of them agreeing to stop trying to fight alone.

Koumajou Remilia II: Stranger’s Requiem launches December 14

Koumajou Remilia II: Stranger’s Requiem will launch for Switch and PC via Steam on December 14, publisher CFK and developer Frontier Aja announced.

In Japan, physical standard and limited editions will be available for Switch for 4,400 yen and 7,700 yen, respectively. The latter will include a special box featuring a new illustration by Banpai Akira, 36-page art book, two-disc original soundtrack (36 tracks), and an acrylic plate featuring the new Banpai Akira illustration. The digital edition will cost 2,980 yen.

Koumajou Remilia II: Stranger’s Requiem is a side-scrolling 2D action game featuring characters from Touhou Project, a popular franchise loved by fans around the world, and a direct sequel to Koumajou Remilia: Scarlet Symphony. Building off of the previous game, Koumajou Remilia II: Stranger’s Requiem is a substantial upgrade to the previous title in more ways than one, featuring better graphics and gameplay, an original story centered around a new protagonist, and a richer lineup of characters. Embark on an adventure with Chief Maid Sakuya Izayoi as she finds herself in search of spring, which has disappeared along with her friends from the castle.

Story

“No way! Back then, I’m sure the Scarlet Devil Castle was……” After the incident surrounding the Scarlet Mist covering Gensokyo, Sakuya Izayoi, chief maid of the Scarlet Devil Mansion, notices something else amiss. The people she called family back at the mansion have gone missing and an unwelcome guest mentions that “Spring still hasn’t come.” Sakuya immediately sets out toward the site of the obliterated Scarlet Devil Castle in search of why that may be, only to find a sight she can’t believe, the castle standing there once more…

Insane to me how Eda must've said yes to Luz asking to stay with her at the Owl house, because she could relate. Because at her exact same age, Eda also struggled with a mother who meant well, but was ultimately doing something that hurt her out of misguided intentions. And because she felt betrayed and didn't want to go along with that plan, Eda also ended up running into the woods outside her home, only to stumble across the portal in the ruins of a Clawthorne ancestor’s home, and go through it despite what her mother had planned. And in doing so, she found independence and began her journey into discovering herself.

So no wonder Eda let Luz do the same. Even if she didn't know her whole story yet, Eda must've picked up on a couple details with Luz deeply resonating with her "Us weirdoes gotta stick together" motto, as well as encouraging the Conformatorium prisoners that nobody should be punished for who they are. The way Luz said that, Eda must've realized she was projecting/relating to them hard. So Eda saw all she needed to, and that's why she let Luz stay.

Her telling Luz to go back to her "real" family in the season 1 finale hurts even more because of this, because I wonder if Eda missed her mother at the moment too. So she wanted Luz to have a good relationship with her mother that she couldn't have. She wanted Luz to treasure that while she could still have it. And at the same time, I wonder if Eda felt as if she was betraying herself by being a hypocrite, telling Luz to stay with her mother when Eda herself hadn't done so and would continue not to.

But then Luz stays for Eda's sake, and she helps Eda get back her relationship with her mother. And Eda helps Luz in making a new portal so she regain her relationship with HER mother. All while lamenting, at one point, that Luz is going to go back to her real family in Eda's Requiem. They're both going back to their biological mothers, so they don't need each other anymore as a substitute. Besides, even if Eda's morals made sense to her at the time, she might've regretted letting Luz in and allowing her to be hurt by the coven.

But Luz and Eda's familial and found relationships aren't mutually exclusive, either!!! And Eda has to remember what she told Luz in Separate Tides, that her life changed for the better meeting this girl! Maybe Eda thinks that she needs Luz, but Luz didn't need her. But she really needed another parental figure, not unlike Manny, to give Luz another perspective to work with, so she could eventually go back to Camila and explain in better terms what she needed. And by the time Luz reunited with her mother, she wasn't able to articulate how she felt, due to a number of other factors outside of Eda's control that made her feel too guilty to ask for that.

Eda meeting Camila was so tense on her part, because she likely though of herself as an irresponsible stranger who kidnapped Camila's child and got her so terribly hurt and traumatized; At least, she couldn't blame Camila for thinking that way. Eda probably felt that way about herself, sometimes. But Luz needed her moms to get along, it'd mean so much to her, so Eda brushes aside the self-pity and presents herself as Luz's other family; Similarly, Camila has already opened her mind to the Boiling Isles because she can tell how much this place and its people mean to Luz. So even if they had different ideas on how to help Luz, they've since made their consensus by listening to Luz herself, and have gotten together over this mutual love.
