2,000-Year-Old Painted Dog Penis Bone Found in Ancient Roman Ritual Shaft
Some archaeologists were excavating a quarry shaft just outside of London. They found thousands of animal and human bones dating back to Roman times. Among them, they found the remains of over 280 domestic animals.
Pigs, cows, sheep, horses. 70% of those animals were dogs. Among those remains they found one animal bone that stood out among the rest: a dog’s baculum bone that had been partially painted red.
For anyone who hasn’t recently brushed up on their dog anatomy terminology, the baculum is a penis bone.
ANCIENT PAINTED DOG PENIS BONE LIKELY USE FOR FERTILITY RITUALS
This rare object thought to be used during rituals was found at the Nescot dig site in the town of Ewell in 2015. The site dates back to the late first or second century CE. Of the many dog remains they found, none of them showed signs of butchery, burning, or disease. However, the dog penis bone was covered in iron oxide, which is not naturally occurring at that site.
That means someone painted red ocher on the penis bone before dropping it off in the pile of bones. You might better know red ocher as the ancient version of red paint our distant ancestors used to paint figures on cave walls. It’s also a material commonly associated with Roman rituals.
The bone probably symbolized fertility and was used to offer some kind of protection, since the penis was considered a good luck charm and sometimes used to ward off the evil eye. Researchers believe that a lot of the animals found at the site were born in the spring and summer, times that align with agricultural fertility.
Both dogs and horses are animals that were closely associated with fertility rites in Roman Europe.

Hey so did you know that the Mars rover Perseverance has an instrument called SHERLOC which is studying the composition of the soil, and an accompanying camera called WATSON that is documenting everything?
In 2024 they've been exploring somewhere called the "Beehive Geyser", except SHERLOC's cover got stuck (presumably resulting in grit affecting a sensitive instrument?)
I feel very normal about this.

I think that I've only drawn Ford like. 3 times in my entire life. so here's some Fordsy (and some Fiddsy. and a Bill I guess)
[image description: a page of drawings of ford, mcgucket, and bill cipher from gravity falls. near the top are two portraits of ford, one in the gravity falls style and the other in a more realistic style. next to that is a simple doodle of ford and mcgucket smiling and embracing with the caption "old man yaoi!" beneath them. in the bottom left is a simple drawing of a younger ford, and next to that is a drawing of bill with a speech bubble saying "i'm here too! also i'm hatless for spacing reasons". next to that is bill's hat, as well as mcgucket in an orange and brown 70s-style outfit and a braided beard, and he is sitting on the ground, lost in thought. end id]

Meteorite Strike Captured by Doorbell Camera in Canada
A doorbell camera on a Canadian home captured rare video and sound of a meteorite striking Earth as it crashed into a couple’s walkway.
When Laura Kelly and her partner returned home after an evening walk in July, they were surprised to find their walkway littered with dust and strange debris, according to the Meteoritical Society.
They checked their security camera and saw something slamming against their entrance way, producing a cloud of smoke and a crackle.
The pair reported what they found to the University of Alberta's Meteorite Reporting System and the curator Chris Herd, who examined samples of the debris to confirm its interstellar origins.
Meteorites are bits of space rock that hit Earth after surviving a trip through its scorching atmosphere.
About 43,500 kilograms of similar debris strikes Earth every day, according to NASA, but is much more likely to plunge into an ocean than onto someone's front stoop.
While cameras have captured meteors streaking through the sky, it's rare to capture the sound of a complete meteorite strike on video and this footage is believed to be a first.
The space rock, officially registered Monday, was named Charlottetown after the city on Prince Edward Island in eastern Canada where it struck.
