ok someone please correct me if i'm wrong but am i weird for thinking those 'audiobooks don't count as reading' posts are ableist as fuck????
#ramble#my first thought was like: how is this even a debate what about blind people. not every book comes in braille but MOST have an audiobook#or dyslexic people#you still enjoyed the book!! you still absorbed it!!! you got EXACTLY the same thing as people who read the words!!!#how does it not count????#i guess you miss out on the 'learning new vocab' you get through seeing the words but also#i don't really do audiobooks but i do a lot of podcasts esp fiction podcasts#and i have ABSOLUTELY picked up new stuff from there that helps with my writing#someone please explain how this is even an argument of COURSE it counts????#idk in my opinion finishing a book means 'i put the words in my brain and i thought about them and i enjoyed a story'#not 'i held a stack of paper in my hands for a bit'#i'm v lucky that i do have time to sit and read. and whenever i commute anywhere it's public transport so i CAN bring a book with me#but if i didn't have the free time or had to drive for hours everywhere i would be STOKED to still get to enjoy books#it's been REALLY bothering me lmao idk why i feel so strongly#for some reason it's giving the same energy as like. being told you can't take a comic or manga from the library bc it's not a 'real' book#of course it's a real book it's a story somebody wrote down#i can see this spiralling into 'if you have a kindle you aren't reading'. you have to sniff the paper. feel the papercuts

Me: hm, I want something to put on the TV as background noise... Huh. Looks like YouTube is recommending something called The Last Unicorn. That's perfect, it's probably some old shitty animation that has aged poorly! I can watch it ironically!
Me, 2 hours later as the credits roll: *crying, cheering, buying the book, composing the songs*
Me, 2 weeks later: So I have compiled all of the quotes from the book that I think could make good tattoos, and also, HOW HAVE I NEVER LEARNED ABOUT HOW THE LAST UNICORN FUCKING SLAPS??? This gay-ass little fairytale fed my soul! Watered my crops! Transed my gender! Can't believe I heard of this story from youtube recommendations, of all places!!
#original#the last unicorn#tlu#peter s beagle#molly gru#schmendrick#schmendrick the magician#two of my favorite characters in anything right there in the center of the story! and I'm glad I saw the film first!#my reading ability has diminished due to trauma disability etc. but it seems like having a visual reference actually really helped!#no wonder i only ever want to read fan fic! turns out reading is not actually Superior to other types of Storytelling. it's just different.#to say otherwise is snobbishness I have been eminently guilty of in my life!#but like it is easier for me to consume tv and movies and that is fine actually. also that's why I'm doing a graphic novel lol#because i wanted to make something i would actually be able to read if i found it at a library. altho the audio book IS gonna be bomb#the audiobook is for visually impaired readers and anyone who wants or needs it! accessible stories for everyone! yeah!!#my gender was already transed but now I've gained an ADDITIONAL gender! which one? I'll never tell 😘#i am so powerful i have so much fuckin gender. my wife has no gender. and she is equally as powerful.#and also she has STUDIED THE BLADE#mostly zoro's blades from One Piece#normally YouTube recommends me shit movies like idiocracy or smth this is like if every day ur cat brought you a piece of rotten food and#then one day it brings you a BEAUTIFULLY ANIMATED TALE FEATURING MY BELOVED TWINK FUCK-UP WIZARD FRIEND AND MY ALL-TIME HOMEGIRL MOLLY GRU#and also it's soft and beautiful and funny and fucking weird!! i wrote melodies to the songs in the books on my ukulele

I've done it I found all the books I'm free 🥹
I put them all in my little house, also the copy I found of volume 5 is significantly larger than the rest and doesn't fit on the shelf??
#I listened to an audiobook some time ago so I was already familiar with the story#thinking of it since I have Tharael living with me is it disrespectful to have these books about Qalian lying around.......

The Evolving Truth of Ever-Stronger Will
YA contemporary in 2nd person
a teen’s abusive mother dies and they have to figure out how to heal and survive the final year before they turn 18 to stay out of the foster system, without CPS finding out
when they’re cleaning out their mother’s room, they find letters from their old foster parent who was planning on adopting them before their mother claimed them back - who is still searching for them, and they’re desperate to find her again
autistic, agender, demiromantic acespec MC, genderfluid love interest, SC with tourette’s
#The Evolving Truth of Ever-Stronger Will#aroaessidhe 2024 reads#great YA contemporary about healing and learning to accept help#I thought the 2nd person POV was a great choice and loved the audiobook narration by vico ortiz#I was hoping it wouldn’t have a romance bc it’s the kind of story that doesn’t need that#(like the author’s other book - the LI shows up after JUST long enough for me to have been enjoying the fact that it doesn’t have it lol)#I liked the the exploration of will and hannah (who’s more privileged in a lot of ways)’s friendship - falling apart & getting closer again#though again I would have loved it that were more of a central focus#but that’s a me thing; the romance was very sweet and I enjoyed it!#I always like an aspec character who’s already figured out their identity before the book starts but then it’s still explored a little more#maybe at times some of the stuff felt - overdramatic? like with the drug dealers/guns/etc or raz being uncontactable#and just generally the way it’s like LOTS of trauma then LOTS of everything turning out okay - I think that might not work for everyone

The AuDHD inner turmoil of "listening to audiobooks=real reading" and "listening to audiobooks=LISTENING bc there's a difference between listening and reading" battling for dominance in my head
#how do I say “audiobooks are valid forms of experiencing stories” without battling for the the literal definition of “reading”#like there's “reading” and there's “reading” and I have a hard time reconciling it#audhd#autistic#adhd#actually audhd#autistic things#autism#actually autistic#actually adhd#neurospicy#neurosparkly#neurodivergent

For a book I’m writing, I am wondering if Hemet-Nisut is the correct title/last name for an ancient Egyptian handmaiden?
Hi there, thanks for the ask! ḥmt nswt means king's wife so it would not be an appropriate name for a handmaiden. It's a title, not a name. The ancient Egyptian's didn't have last names, it was a case of "[Name], son/daughter of [Name]". Here is a list of given names: [X] and another one [X], many names included the name of a god/goddess and they all have a meaning e.g. Ahmose = born of the god Iah (the moon god). If you need any more help, please let me know!
#answered#ask#listen to the audiobook or read the book death comes as the end#it is a great fictional story set in ancient egypt#24 hours in ancient egypt is also a wonderful book to get into the time period#that's also available as an audiobook#15pantheons#sorry i only saw this ask once i logged on with my laptop

Listening to me read a chapter from Time To Orbit: Unknown. We're all enjoying Auntie DOOM's Story Quarter-Hour at bedtime. I started recording it at Chapter 14; if anybody would like I can go back and do the first chapters too. They're on the @derinthescarletpescatarian fan discord, but I'm happy to put them anywhere handy.
[*] CAUTION: This story has a reputation for deeply enthralling people who used to read voraciously, but can't focus on reading like they used to. Extremely enjoyable, but hard on the daily schedule.

This is my most gen z opinion but it takes wayyy too long to read. I have so many books that look interesting but I'd have to set aside 5-8 dedicated hours to read them. And you can't do anything while reading like you can with movies, so those really are dedicated hours. I should be able to absorb the contents in my brain.
#i cant do audiobooks bc i zone out and have a hard time understanding audio anyway#personal#this is why poetry and short stories and essays are nice#but im feeling compelled to read actual books bc of my library job#i need a list of book recommendations for the end of the year#and everything i have read we dont have on our shelves (see: stone butch blues)

He was kind-hearted, in a way. You know the sort of kind heart: it made him uncomfortable more often than it made him do anything; and even when he did anything, it did not prevent him from grumbling, losing his temper, and swearing (mostly to himself).

pspsps other animorphs fans: if you want Another heartbreaking children's series to blast through you should read the How To Train Your Dragon books. the first 3-4 are silly romps and then 5-8 gripping plot with deeper emotional cores and 9-12 all break my heart
#how to train your dragon#the books are very different from the movies its a completely diff story (though i also love the movies as their own thing)#animorphs#the books are short also the first several only 3-4 hours of audiobook time / faster on paper tbh#how to train your dragon books#httyd books#OH THIS DID NOT POST TO THE CORRECT BLOG god i’ve been so bad at that lately#well#this has nothing to do with bioware but uh take the rec if you like anyway

as someone who doesn't even personally use audiobooks, i will die on the hill that they count as real reading. and i'm willing to kill on this hill too
#i personally think it's super ableist to say it doesn't count as reading#and it's also ableist to say it only counts IF you have a disability that make reading physical books impossible#especially bc the latter opens up the perfect shit storm of forcing people to have to disclose their disability(ies) in order to#not he harassed by assholes#and honestly why do people get some fucking judgemental about how someone consumed a book?#it's the same exact story my guy. same words. same world. same characters. get over yourself#also in case it comes into question: i don't read via audiobooks bc they just don't personally work for me#i have a hard time retaining information that's been given verbally#text post

me, stupidly and weirdly resistant to listening to audio books vs reading a physical book for no real reason: man i wish there was a way to like, read a book while i crochet like i do with tv shows and movies and podcasts
#toy txt post#my reasons are irrational you dont need to try to talk me into it. i KNOW#its very silly of me#imagine how much reading i could get done. but alas. Feels Bad#even listening to a more. uh. Story type podcast or fiction like nightvale was a bit difficult to start for me. i like nightvale now i#listened. but i worry that is clocking in my brain as an Exception 😔 maybe it would be easier if i tried some nonfiction books? scary#i also struggle with single host podcasts apparently even tho im also ehhhh on the kind where the structure is the host Interviewing a#different person everytime? maybe it would be okay with a nonfiction audiobook tho cos it would be getting read by a narrator and not sound#so much like a guy ranting into a mic which makes me feel a little insane. altho propaganda doesnt necessarily always sound like a guy#ranting into a mic so idk. i could probably make it through if i can find a nice book about like. parasitic worms. i could tolerate#feeling like im falling into sigma male affirmations videos for worms i think. wormffirmations are allowed#*to clarify i dont listen to those but listening to better offline makes me feel like im morphing into the kinda guy who does and i hate it#which feels unfair cos he is RIGHT and the podcast is good but i need there to be like a cohost there to break the tension of the Ranting#sometimes he has guests on? but its not quite the same#i think the format i like best is either like 2 or 3 regular cohosts discussing things within a specific topic#OR. 1 host whos like infodumping to the other host who knows nothing about the subject. OR. 2 hosts info dumping to each other about#different aspects of the subject. OR. 1 host who brings on fun guests to infodump to them about a subject. and then obviously the subject#needs to intrigue me. ex. sawbones well theres your problem (I HATE THAT THIS ONE IS BEST EXPERIENCED ON YOUTUBE😭 I WANT THEM TO JUST DUMP#ALL THE SLIDES INTO A BIG BLOG POST SOMEWHERE AND I CAN CHECK IN AND FOLLOW ALONG THAT WAY WITHOUT HAVING TO HAVE MY PHONE SCREEN ON THE#WHOLE TIME!!!!!!!!! but. im listening for free so its unreasonable to demand more of them BUT ALSO I FEEL LIKE JUST COPYPASTING ALL OF THE#SLIDES INTO A BIG BLOG POST ISNT THAT MUCH MORE EFFORT THAN EDITING A WHOLE YOUTUBE VIDEO? WAAAAAH. THEY DONT NEED TO BE TIMESTAMPED OR#ANYTHING JUST THROW EM IN ILL FIGURE IT OUTTTTTT#anyway. also more than 3 hosts is really pushing my ability to keep track of voices.#anyway: sawbones wtyp tpwky behind the bastards scam goddess#(which is true crime adjacent but focuses mainly on scams and isnt copaganda and laci is funny and cool)#common descent pod completely arbortrary maintenance phase if books could kill#deep sea podcast has more bringing ppl in to interview them about shit than i personally enjoy but i put up with it cos i do like the hosts#and the subject

Hey y'all! I am considering trying listening to podfics, but I have no idea where to start. Like, I read a lot of fanfic, but idk how one goes about listening to them? Is it like an app, or a download it kind of thing, or what? Do you have any advice or specific recommendations? In the past I have really, really struggled with books on tape because I cannot focus on just listening, but I like listening to like sort of documentary-ish videos while sewing and that's just a person talking, so probably I would be able to focus on audiobooks or podfics now?
#the person behind the yarn#I have nothing against audiobooks or podfics I think they are excellent!#It's great to have options and everybody has different accessibility requirements and preferences#I think part of my strong dislike for listening to them myself though came from my oldest sibling's high school reading#they did not like reading the assigned books so our mom got it on tape and it meant the only thing playing in the car#for like WEEKS was The Old Man and the Sea#but I was not in the car every time they were! So I couldn't follow the story! and I hated only getting bits of it#and then the next audiobook was on a road trip and it was...one of the robinson books I think#swiss family robinson or robinson carusoe? one of the stranded on an island classics#but the environment of the island made absolutely no sense#and the animals they described as native to the island could not reasonably exist in the same environment#and when I (age like 11 or 12 maybe) expressed that everyone else in the car thought it was funny#but I was genuinely very upset about the book's unrealistic depiction of animals lol#anyway none of that is relevant here I just want to try listening to stories again
