Crafting a Stable Bucket Pantry
I fill buckets like this one with dry staple foods. I have a room filled with canned goods that I home-canned. Most of these were foods that I obtained locally, or we grew ourselves. In another location, I have buckets of staple foods, most of which will last me many months. Here is what I store in my stable dry food bucket pantry. Oatmeal- There’s nothing like a bowl of hot oatmeal in the…

How do u like to make ur rice and beans? What kinda beans?? Ngl it sounds good but I’m just imagining a can of baked beans 😅
omg. its pretty basic! i make mine in an instant pot but i saute onions and jalapeños, then use brown rice, black beans, diced tomato, cumin, chili powder, garlic, salt, pepper, lime juice, and vegetable stock. after its cooked i mix in fresh green onion and cilantro, and then garnish with more fresh cilantro, green onion, jalapeño, and lime as needed when i serve it up ^_^

because i know you have food opinions and i am thinking about it being in the carolinas this weekend. opinions on barbecuing?
my personal taste preference leans towards a dry rub on the meat and a vinegar based sauce. i like the way the acid pairs with the fattiness of the meat. but i also think the meat itself should taste really good on its own. i don't like when the meat comes pre-sauced when it's served, i prefer to dose sauce out myself, cause i want to be able to taste the meat on its own too. and because i think pre-saucing everything up front might be a way to try and hide what might be a bland or dry or otherwise not preferred piece of meat. i'm not a huge fan of the thick, sweet sauces that are based on molasses or tomato. i tend to find them too sweet and gloopy, and i generally avoid store/chain brand bbq sauces for that reason, but i won't outright turn up a house made sauce without trying it first. i think pork is my favorite meat for barbecue because it's got good flavor and lots of fat to stay juicy, yet it's not so strongly flavored that strong spice or sauce covers it up. though i prefer a cut like shoulder to ribs. beef brisket is good barbecued, i think that's a texas specialty, but i've had some really dry smoked brisket before, and also i'm very partial to brisket prepared other ways like braised or cured into pastrami. and as far as chicken goes, it CAN be quite good, but for me it's gotta be dark meat and it's gotta be cooked competently. i've had too much "barbecue" chicken that is either just plain roasted chicken drowned in mediocre sauce or overcooked so badly it's like chewing on linen fibers. but a nice, simple, salt cured/brined and dry rubbed chicken leg quarter smoked and served with a good sauce on the side? now that's a great dinner. gimme some cornbread and fried okra to go with. yummy

googled substitutions for it because i dont wanna fuck up and every american blog is telling me i can make it at home with staples that are guaranteed to be in my pantry. well guess what, i dont have molasses.
so now i want to cry.
This is the one I always make btw.

""Patriotic" Thieves Take Victory Bonds," Montreal Star. May 7, 1943. Page 3. --- BURGLARS broke into the Atlas Dry Goods Company store at 2038 St. Lawrence boulevard last night, smashed open the safe, and stole $700 in cash and $1,200 worth of Victory Bonds.
The thieves entered an adjoining vacant house and first tried to pierce a hole through through the wall between the two buildings. Unsuccessful, they next broke through a skylight to the roof crossed to the Atlas Building and chopped an opening to the second floor. It was then an easy matter to reach the safe and smash it. The theft was only discovered at 9 a.m. today.

they spent ten minutes in this adventuring party talking about how much they dont like salads, and describing the most dry, unappetizing version of a salad, only to follow it up with everyone agreeing that 'as soon as you start putting stuff that tastes good in there its no longer a salad'

Good grief. I live inside a city in order to have the benefits of living INSIDE a city. Honestly, it was a real step down for me moving from a major world class city to a … uh … extremely isolated regional city.
And over the years Gaslight City did indeed grow and become more “city like”
But this whole pandemic situation coupled with the end result of inflation and higher interest rates too has ended up regressing the whole region into sleepy, suburban-esque, and everything shuts down way too early. Nothing is open on ‘Murican holidays because everything is all very very American pie and wonderbread.
Look. Maybe I am being really cranky and snotty here but ffs, this downgrade to my life is now downgrading even further.
I gotta get out of this place.
