Displacement Diaries [1]:
🚨Dangerous
Between the Fear of the Unknown and the Pain of Anticipation... This is How We Prepare for Winter
Winter here is unlike anywhere else in the world; it reveals the harsh reality we live every day amid the ongoing brutal war on Gaza.
Our anxiety grows as a family of 11, knowing that our worn-out tent could turn into a nightmare if water seeps in, making our suffering even worse. The children and elderly among us are already suffering from the bitter cold, and illnesses are spreading due to the humidity.
Tumblr media
We are in desperate need of your support during these difficult times. Your donations can make a significant difference by providing Shader to improve rain protection, wood to strengthen the tent and ensure its stability, as well as warm clothing and shoes to face the freezing cold. Proper coverings will also help shield everyone from the harsh weather. Your support will have a major impact on improving our lives and giving us hope to face this harsh winter.
Shader: It is what is placed over the tent to protect it from rainwater
Don't let my family face winter alone. Be part of the relief effort that brings hope in a time of need. Every moment of delay in receiving humanitarian aid means additional suffering for us.
Notes:
The campaign is documented by @nabulsi @el-shab-hussein @90-ghost
The prices of Shader and wood in the market have skyrocketed, making them unaffordable for us.

Chapter 124
Xiang Pu was a clever one. Knowing that the master was going to Kun Ning Palace, ran back in advance, called several eunuchs and palace maids to come.
Originally were stopped outside, but Su Guifei was determined to break in, the palace maid and eunuchs below did not dare to block her, and if something happened, the Empress would certainly fine, however their own fates would be difficult to predict. So on the one hand it was really barging in, on the other hand it was pretending to barricade, and so they eventually allowed Pan'er to lead the people to barge straight into the hall.
The moment Empress Chen saw Pan'er, she sat up straight, and at the same time, she also put away the furious expression on her face. Hearing Pan'er's words, her face was just a little grim as she said, "Fu Chun, you answer Noble Consort Su."
Fu Chun busily stood straight, hands folded by her lower abdomen, her head half lowered, as if the one who hit the person just now wasn't her, this respectful posture and this mannerism could not be faulted by anyone, worthy of being a senior palace maid beside the Empress.
"Replying to Your Highness words, Bai Jie was summoned to come because not long ago she was in the house of internal affairs to receive something, in which there were some mistakes, who knows Bai Jie came over and spoke out of turn, offending the Empress, the Empress ordered the servant girl to teach her a lesson."
"Bai Jie is a person from Jingren Palace, if she received something wrongly a while ago, it was not someone from the House of Internal Affairs who stepped in to handle, but instead, Her Majesty the Empress herself had to personally deal with this matter? Besides, Jingren Palace received the wrong things, how come this palace was not aware of it, when did this happen, how come nothing was said at that time, but afterwards, you raised an accusation instead?"
Fu Chun's words were clearly a cover story, and since it was a cover story, it could not stand to be scrutinised.
But it was obvious that Fu Chun wasn't without some measures, so she didn't panic.
"Bai Jie received two purple sable skins in the House of Internal Affairs, according to the rules of the Harem, there is no superior purple sable skins in the Noble Consort's sub-regulation, only the Empress and the Empress Dowager and the Grand Empress Dowager have them, which is a usurpation, Bai Jie as a Noble Consort's Grand Palace Maiden shouldn't be unaware of this rule, that is why Her Majesty the Empress summoned her over for questioning."
This matter Pan'er actually was aware of, although the days weren't cold yet, but the palace maids below are already preparing her winter supplies. Such as household clothes, hats and shoes, unless it is auspicious clothes, usually are sent back to let the palace maids below who are good at needle and thread to make.
Bai Jie was usually prudent and proper, so Jingren Palace and the Department of Internal Affairs dealings was her responsibility, a while ago she had told Pan'er, she was going to receive the sable fur to do her hats and gloves, unexpectedly the Department of Internal Affairs received a batch of superior sable fur,and sent two of these as tribute to Jingren Palace.
Such things on the surface was a violation of the rules, but were actually a common occurrence in the palace. The Department of Internal Affairs will look at the favour of the ladies of the Palace, and will inevitably pay tribute with some of the things that are not included in the regulations.
Pan'er also did not take it to heart, after all, she received many things that were not within regulations, as Zong Cong let people send it to her to make a cloak, even items better than the first-class sable skin is not unheard of, who could have expected Fu Chun would take advantage of that.
It seemed that Kunning Palace had been waiting to catch her shortcomings, not just a day or two days, or else whether she obtained two sable skins from the Ministry of Internal Affairs was Fu Chun, a palace maid to know? But Pan'er was not without a response approach, before she came she knew that this matter couldn't end well, but she didn't care, anyway, she wasn't the one who should be afraid of making a big scene.
Pan'er didn't even look at Fu Chun and put on the noble consort's attitude: "Bai Jie, how should a servant girl speak to her master?"
Originally knocked to the ground, after Pan'er came in, Bai Jie, had gotten up and stood with her head lowered at the side, replied, "Replying to Your Highness, in order to show respect, servant girls should speak to their masters with respect, and their words should be referred to as replying to the words of their masters."
"Good then, she has offended this palace, teach her a lesson for this palace!" Bai Jie didn't hold back, and took two steps forward and yanked on Fu Chun's lapel.
Fu Chun was still in a state of shock: "You can't hit me ......"
"A servant girl, can't even address herself as servant girl, reward her with a few more slaps from this palace and teach her the rules."
"Yes."
Empress Chen sharply and angrily said, "What are you trying to do, Noble Consort Su?"
At this time, Pan'er had already gone to sit on the chair next to her, Empress Chen was in the main position on the phoenix throne, and she randomly chose a position to sit down near the end, seemingly one on top and one underneath, but she did not lose any imposing force.
"Replying to the Empress' words, this concubine originally came to find the Empress to talk about family matters, who would have thought that this Fu Chun was so ignorant of the rules, in order to avoid such things from happening again in the future, and going out to disgrace the Empress' face, this concubine will overstep her authority to teach her a lesson on behalf of the Empress, teach her the rules, lest she go out and cause trouble for the Empress in the future."
Between words, Bai Jie's slaps had already swung over.Yes, swung. This was how Fu Chun had hit her before, and now that Her Highness had risked a complete falling out with the Empress to save her, she naturally had to hit her back in the same way.
Fu Chun didn't cry out in a ghostly manner, just in the end, the slaps were very hard, and it was inevitable that she suffered pain for a while. It was Empress Chen who couldn't stand it. She was so old, no one ever dared to be so reckless in front of her, and never did anyone disgrace her face so much.
Empress Chen was suffering these two days, of course she knew that it was not wise for her to call Bai Jie over, but instead of ordering someone to go home and ask, this move gave her more room to manoeuvre.
If the Chen family did not know, but instead she asked a bad thing, is when things spread to the surface, she is no longer the only daughter of the Chen family in the palace, is not cheap surnamed Su this bitch! Chen family tenth girl died a long time ago, since her surname is Su, it is best to be surnamed Su for the rest of her life!
"You know?"
Empress Chen's eyes kind of scared Pan'er, such eyes she had only seen on Empress Chen in her previous life when she was at the end of her rope and was about to be locked up in the Cold Palace, she didn't think that she would be at the end of her rope so early in this life.
"Know what?"
With the sound of slapping in the background, such a dialogue was extremely bizarre.
"You know exactly what this palace is talking about!"
"You're afraid?"
"What is this palace afraid of, this palace is his majesty's primary wife, this palace is the empress of the middle palace, as long as this palace doesn't make a mistake for one day, his majesty won't be able to abolish me for one day, and you're just a noble consort, this palace is afraid of you?" Empress Chen laughed coldly, but something in her eyes couldn't fool Pan'er, her old rival of two lives.
"My surname is Su, not Chen. The things you fought tooth and nail for are actually not worth mentioning to others."
Saying that, Pan'er stood up with some disinterest and walked towards the door. Bai Jiu also halted in her punishment of Fu Chun and followed behind.
"I don't believe that you don't covet a prosperous family lineage!" Empress Chen stood up from the phoenix seat and hissed as she squeezed the armrest.
When Emperor Jianping first ascended the throne, he only appointed Pan'er to the position of Noble Concubine, not with the meaning that her status was too low to be promoted too high at once. His intention had only been to preserve the stability of the Empress.
Pan'er stopped her in tracks and looked back at the Empress, "Do you think that the Chen family is truly a good thing for either of us?"
If they were that great, why did Emperor Jianping refrain from setting up a crown prince all this time?
This reasoning also applied to Pan'er as well, she already had three children and the position of Noble Consort, she really didn't need the Chen family at all.
Empress Chen collapsed onto her arse on the phoenix throne. She naturally understood the meaning of Su-shi's words, it wasn't that she hadn't thought about the possibility that it was because of the Chen family that His Majesty hadn't been appointing Duo'er as the crown prince.
The Chen family already had a Prime Minister, a Minister of Rites, and an Empress, if there was also a Crown Prince, in a few years, would this kingdom be surnamed Zong or Chen?
But what could she do?
The Chen surname for her was a boon and a constraint, if not because of the surname Chen, she would not have been chosen as the Crown Princess, in the same way had she not been surnamed Chen she may have long been suppressed by Su-shi.
Her surname can only be Chen, and that's all she's known as.
--
The road back was very quiet, although as they walked the long distance, the palace maids and eunuchs quietly glanced at eachother, but did not dare to speak.
When they returned to Jingren Palace, Bai Jie said, "If it were not for this servant girl ......"
Pan'er shook her head, smiled and said: "Sooner or later this day would come, I have no intention of recognising the Chen family as my maternal clan, this will avoid making the emperor suspicious, and it is probably better to simply speak the truth."
In fact, Pan'er was deliberately saying the words publicly, she had been waiting for this opportunity for a while, and hadn't thought that the opportunity would come so soon.
"Quickly go and let Xiang Pu rub some medicine on you, in the end you are a girl, don't ruin your face." Xiang Pu pulled Bai Jie away, and deliberately made jokes with her.
Bai Jie didn't say anything but her eyes softened a lot when she looked at Xiang Pu. Today if it were not for Xiang Pu alerting their mistress to come barge in to save her, then her fate could only be one of death, fortunately, Xiang Pu was once again 'meddlesome'.
Pan'er also did not go to the Qianqing Palace, waited until the evening meal to see Zong Cong had not come, she was relieved, thinking that he must be very busy with political affairs, temporarily unable to care about this small matter, but also to give her some buffer room, giving her time to think about how to explain the matter.
So she let someone pass the meal, and the three children ate together with her. As the homework in the study is getting heavier, Zong Yue does not come to Jingren Palace for meals every day, and the girls' school in the East Palace was moved to the palace by Zong Cong, into the Princess' Courtyard near the Ning Shou Palace in a long row of courtyards.
Now that Wan Yin were getting older, the lady teacher instructed her, in addition to teaching her to read and write, even embroidery and qin, chess and painting had also been put on the schedule.
Wan Yin did not dare to say that she would not learn, but with the experience of having her fingers pierced before, she is now reluctant to learn those things. She was very interested in painting, which was surprising to Pan'er.
As for Zong Lin, he was about to turn five, and once he turned five, he had to enter the upper study room, so he was moved to the southern third house in advance. However, since he was old enough to know things, he loved to pester his elder brothers and sisters, and lived in Pan'er's palace less often, so as soon as he heard that he had to move to a new courtyard, he was happier than anyone else, which made Pan'er, as his mother, sigh with the feeling that her children were no longer small.
Usually, they never had a quiet meal together, but today, somehow Zong Yue and Wan Yin didn't talk much, and even Zong Lin, who was always rowdy, had very few things to say.
"What's wrong, why are you children acting like this?"
Zong Yue looked a little worried and said, " Son heard that Mother and the Empress had a conflict because a palace maid violated the rules in Kunning Palace?"
The news has travelled really fast, even Zong Yue has heard about it.
Pan'er looked at both Wan Yin and Zong Lin, and it was clear that these two knew about it as well.
"It's nothing much, it's just that your Empress Mother had detained Bai Jie, and Mother Consort went over to ask for her back."
"Then why did she detain Bai Jie, the people of our Jingren Palace are not people that her Kunning Palace can just arbitrarily detain!" Wan Yin said indignantly.
Pan'er tapped her forehead: "Look, Mother spoiled you, what words can be said, what words can not be said, you are also not young, you should be well aware? Although I understand your heart, you can't talk nonsense, the empress as the head of the six palaces, the supreme power of the harem, it's only natural for her to call a maid for questioning, but it's only because Bai Jie is mother's personal maid that mother went through the trouble her to ask for her return."
"Then she knows that Bai Jie is mother's personal palace maid, and she still arbitrarily detains her, it is clearly bullying mother!"
It wasn't unreasonable for Wan (婉婤) to say that, but it was hard to say who was bullying who this time.
"Mother is as helpless as you say, casually being bullied? Besides, there's still your father, the Empress wouldn't dare to bully me as she pleases. Well, this is all grown-ups' business, you guys are only how old and you worry about grown-ups' business, you're not afraid of aging before your time. I'm fine, you should not be bothered with these matters, it would be better to pay more attention to schoolwork, don't be mischievous please, the rest will be dealt with by Mother."
This naughty and mischievous person was naturally Zong Lin, who was quite unconvinced, and his little mouth deflated. As for Zong Yue and Wan Yin, they exchanged glances and didn't say anything else.
After dinner, they stayed behind to accompany Pan'er, and deliberately joked and entertained her.
In the end they were still small children, who could not hide their thoughts, often looking out of the window, probably wondering why Father didn't come today, but they didn't say it openly.
When Pan'er told them to go back to rest, Wan Yin even gave Zong Lin a wink, so that he could stay to sleep with his mother because he was small, but Zong Lin was a person who didn't know how to wink or what it meant, and asked his big sister what she was doing by squeezing her own eyes, and whether she was uncomfortable with her eyes.
Wan Yin got angry with her ignorant younger brother, and Pan'er was in tears trying to contain her laughter as she drove them away, just at that moment Zong Cong arrived.
"Father."
Zong Cong sat down, looked around at the children, and looked at Pan'er, only to say: "It is this late, why have you not gone back to rest, Zong Yue still have to go to the study tomorrow, in the morning, but will you even be able to get up in the morning?"
Zong Yue grinned and scratched his head and said, "Accompanying mother consort to talk for a moment and forgot, son will immediately return."
The three children left together, Pan'er specially instructed someone to light more lanterns on the road back so they didn't fall.
After the children had left, she asked Zong Cong if he had had dinner yet. Sure enough, it was he had not.
"The border was inadvertently attacked by the Jin people at the Guanwai Pass, although fortunately they did not break through the line of defence, but the General Hu Bingcheng was seriously injured, and now the border is in a state of chaos, how would I have the heart to have dinner."

Note
In the morning Daisuke will find two things placed just so inside his shoe locker: a small box tied closed with a frilly ribbon with a bubblegum pink envelope placed on top. An assortment of chocolates lays inside the box; white chocolate, milk chocolate, and dark chocolate. Each one is meant to look like a heart, though some are more successful at it than others. A letter lays inside the envelope. Glittery stickers frame the handwritten note.
' I wanted to give these to you in person, but then I thought: shouldn't I do it the proper way instead? It's double the fun if you get chocolates and celebrate the holiday at the same time, right? Since you like each flavor, I made all of them! I even tried to make one with cherry filling, but it's much harder than it looks, so don't tease me about the shapes okay :( Anyway~ What I also want to say is that I'm glad we've gotten to smile and laugh together. Sometimes my cheeks hurt from smiling so much. Let's spend more time like that together! I want to see more of your other expressions too. Speaking of smiling, I smiled a lot while making these and I hope you can taste that in them. I think sometimes my mom used to say food made with care tastes best. Okay, see you later! - ♡ Shi Qingxuan ♡ '

Tumblr media
the locker opens , and it's with a hitched breath and grimace that daisuke nearly slams it right back shut . what was that ? what the heck was that ?! it's far more glitter and bright color in the small space meant for his shoes than he's bargained for ( that being none , mind you , ) to the point that it's dangerous --- his hand lifts over his chest to count out every growing beat ; his head frantically swivels about to make sure there weren't any sort of witnesses .
--- geeze , that had been close !
of course he'd recognize the shape of a letter and chocolate box even by just a glance , but what in the world was something like that doing in his locker ?! it wasn't a misplaced valentines , was it ?! year after year , his winter-springs had gone absent of anything like this . there's no guess as to who it could possibly be from until he timidly reaches out for it and peeks inside , just one eye opened in a pulled back wince .
well , it probably wasn't a prank , at least ... or a lovingly planted bomb and flashbang hoping to keep him on his toes . the chocolates looked just fine . hardly a professional's handiwork , but what did anyone like the niwa ever care when the sight of them alone made his heart soar ? ( keep it together ! don't get your hopes up too high ! ) setting the checked box aside , daisuke quietly slips out the letter and runs his finger along the seal of it . come to think of it , this sort of presentation felt a bit like ...
ah . it really was from shi qingxuan .
it's getting harder to smother the pounding sense in his chest . daisuke can't help but let out a breath that he hadn't known he was holding , relief rushing in with every warm sense of familiarity . everything feels like an eruption : his own happiness , and the simultaneous bliss of being able to be recognized , as well as to properly recognize someone as a friend .
a proper way : did something like that even exist ? he might have loved to be able to tell her that just like the flavor of chocolates , any method of delivery was just fine . whatever she could come up with , no doubt his own family would have put him through worse , if not more absurd . of course , he never would have teased her over her hard work either . neither through return letter nor in person --- he well understood just how difficult making chocolates could be .
Tumblr media
rather , feeling both his cheeks and his blood starting to burn , he would have only ran away just like now in the overwhelming flush of the moment . it's happiness ; it's too cute , too cute , he can't take it . it stings and aches ; it's tight and a little painful in his chest , he can't help but feel guilty . a burst into the school's restrooms precedes a phantom flash across the mirrors ; a tall , dark figure locking itself behind a door .
his other expressions . his other self and second face . there was no way that she understood the ways truths and a curse like his could evaporate every smile and round of laughter in an instant . but the scent of chocolate and the faintest graces of shi qingxuan's recognizable perfume remain sweet and linger on the smooth , cold tips of his hands . thieves' palms cross reverently over themselves , a little like a prayer --- all the more when the ball of his combined fist lifts to his lips , a second heart's swell curing him of all monstrous form .
wasn't it enough to imagine her happy ? no , she had to truly be content as well . someday , in front of him , even if only for as long as he could bear to stand before it . whatever his answer and the shape of his feelings , he had a month to create it . both his gratitude and desire : his every wish to smile at her without sharp teeth , black wings ; neither of them turning terrified .

Fictober22- Day 10
Prompt: “It’s my name on the line”
Original Work, Mature (I guess because of the implications), tw depression, tw implied suicide
“It’s my name on the line,” He said aloud, sadly.
It should be a chilly day in mid October, as mid October days go, but he couldn’t properly tell. He watched the tree line of oaks and the way the sunset leaves danced on the tree branches. He could see there should be a breeze to move them but couldn’t feel it. The sun wasn’t out, hidden behind a gray shrouded sky and that didn’t surprise him. He was used to its warm bright face being more absent than not this time of year. It had been difficult in previous years once the sun started to set earlier. He started trying new vitamins and bought a “happy lamp”. He tried going for more walks and keeping his hands busy. Some days, like October, were better than the rest. Others, he just didn’t get out of bed. Everything felt heavy and he was just so tired.
Brown crunchy leaves skittered over the shoes he was wearing. They were shiny, freshly polished. He didn’t remember putting these shoes on today but it was nice that he was wearing them. They were black and were the same style of business shoes his dad wore. He remembered standing on them, when he was small, holding his dad’s hands and dancing with him to his favorite song. A somber one about putting time in a bottle. “But there never seems to be enough time To do the things you want to do once you find them,” his dad had sung.
His hands were in his trouser pockets and he had unbuttoned the suit jacket. He can’t remember the last time he was in a suit but he liked it.  He felt fancy. “I should wear more suits,” he said aloud.
“You always looked great in them. Like a proper gentleman,” his dad said from the side of him.  He nodded, smiled and chuckled to himself, feeling good carrying that compliment. Dad could always get him to smile.
“Thanks Dad,” he said, he turned and looked at his father. His dad was wearing what looked like a matching suit with a marigold in the breast pocket. It was a black two piece with a blue button down. Where his was a three piece suit with a daisy in the breast pocket. He had always wanted to wear a three piece suit. He opened the jacket and admired the vest. Black as well and snug. A thick strong fabric which should feel warm to stave off the upcoming winter chill.  There was a gold chain linking up to something in his vest pocket. He pulled the chain out and a small round gold pocket watch slid into his hand. Odd. This isn’t his pocket watch. He doesn’t have a pocket watch. He clicked the release. The watch hands were stuck and silent. Peculiar to have a watch that didn’t work. He read the inscription on the plate.
“I was going to give that to you…later,” his dad sniffled. “But there never seems to be enough time.” He sang the inscription in a weak voice of remorse, “If I had a box just for wishes, And dreams that had never come true, The box would be empty, Except for the memory of how they were answered by you.” Tears streamed down his dad’s face when he finished the verse. His smile broke into a crushing grimace of pain. His dad stumbled. He put his hand out to steady him. He touched his shoulder and his dad felt so solid, like an anchor or a rock. His dad was warm and bright, the sun he had always been chasing in the dark months.
“I’m sorry Dad,“ he whispered. He smiled weakly and went to hug him.
His dad was gone. He was alone and it was grayer than it had been moments ago. A mist was coming in. It would be hard to see anything soon, he knew.  He could faintly hear his dad’s soft voice singing his favorite song elsewhere but it was far away. He sighed and gripped the pocket watch to himself trying to anchor again.
“Hey. You shouldn’t do that,” she warned as she emerged from the mists, her voice strong. Annoyed, he turned to her ready to tell her off. She was young. Younger than him, lithe and pale. Her eyes were dark but not unfriendly with hollow gray circles below them. She wore an old woman’s nightgown. It’s collar went up to her chin. The cuffs and hem had a matching frill. There was a faint lily pattern on her nightdress.
“I’m not-I don’t know what else to do. It’s my name on the line!” he barked, gesturing towards the squat rectangular marble in front of them. She nodded sympathetically and threw a thumb behind her shoulder.
“I know. Mine’s back there in the older section. I’ve been here a long time,” she said, her voice like a whisper through the trees, “And you don’t have to do much of anything but you really shouldn’t keep replaying that moment. It’s not..It’s gone. It’s past and so are you.”
“That sounds like my dad’s favorite song,” he sniffled. He felt calmer and let the pocket watch slide back into the vest pocket. “I didn’t want him to be sad. I didn’t think-I was just so tired.”
“It happens,” she shrugged and smiled. “If you’re still “here”,” she gestured to the space around them and the faded silhouettes of the stones in the mist, “You probably have something that you have to do before you can move on to The Next. But you don’t have to stay “here” you know?”
“I think, I’m waiting for my dad,” he suggested.
“Noble,” she replied. She clucked her tongue and tried again, “Most don’t stay “here”. They go…elsewhere.”
“Where would I even go?” He pouted. She tapped her foot.
“It’s October so the waystations are easier to reach. Find a nice place to stay with kindred spirits while you wait. Time works differently for us so the wait might not be that long,” she offered.
“How will my dad know where to find me? What if I miss him?”
“Your dad loves you very much, James. He used to visit you quite often. He’ll find you the way you keep finding those pocket memories,” she said sincerely. He nodded and smiled back at her nervously. “Go. Have a good time until The Next. If you follow the beacons through the mist, look for a friendly face. It’ll get you to where you need to go.” She made a shooing motion with her hands.
“Hey waitaminute, what about you? Why do you stay?” he asked. She smiled again as if knowing a secret he wasn’t privy to. He didn’t feel awkward about not knowing but he knew that secret wasn’t for him. Her eyes lit up brightly, like two torches on a dark night. Elsewhere, beyond the stones, it sounded like far away dogs barking.
“I stay to offer counsel, a sympathetic ear, and to guide those on to The Next or wherever it is they need to go. Follow the beacons. They mark the way to one of my sisters’ houses. Goodbye James,” she called after him, her voice a strong wind moving him onward.  He was on his feet, without realizing it, moving away from his name on the line.
He followed the soft glow of what he could only assume were her beacons, small gourds with carved faces. It reminded him of something. It was on the tip of his tongue-”Jack o Lanterns,” He said, coming into the clearing and admiring the trail of them.  Before him was an old farmhouse that appeared from the ether and on the porch was a friendly face.
Writers Note: Verses and lyrics mentioned are from “Time in a bottle” by Jim Croce.
I missed the days 5-9 because I was on vacation. I’m going to make all those up later because this beast is becoming an anthology and they are all going to be slightly related. I may go into November with this.  Thank you to whoever reads my work and a great thanks to whoever likes it.

Tungnath Trek Best Time: Tackle the Weather Challenges Like a Pro!
Tumblr media
The Tungnath Trek is more than just a journey to the highest Shiva temple in the world; it’s an adventure that offers panoramic views, spiritual solace, and an unforgettable mountain experience. Nestled in the heart of the Garhwal Himalayas, this trek is ideal for both beginners and experienced trekkers. But to truly enjoy this breathtaking journey, you need to plan it around the right season. Let’s dive into the details of the best time to visit, the Tungnath trek height, what you can expect in terms of weather, and how to prepare for an incredible trek.
Understanding the Best Time for the Tungnath Trek
To make the most of your Tungnath trek, it's essential to plan it during the ideal season. The Tungnath trek best time falls between April and June or September and November. During these months, the weather is pleasant, with clear skies that offer stunning views of the snow-capped peaks. Avoid the monsoon months, as heavy rains can make the trails slippery and difficult to navigate, and the winter season, when the trek is usually closed due to snow.
Facing the Altitude: Tungnath Trek Height
The altitude is one of the highlights of this trek. The Tungnath trek height reaches 12,073 feet (3,680 meters), offering trekkers stunning vistas of the surrounding mountains. The high altitude also means that temperatures can drop significantly, especially early in the morning and late in the evening, so it’s essential to carry enough warm clothing. Despite the trek’s elevation, it’s considered moderate, making it accessible to most adventurers.
Chopta Chandrashila Tungnath Trek: A Weekend Escape
If you're seeking a quick getaway into the mountains, the Chopta Tungnath weekend trip is the perfect option. The trek begins at Chopta, often referred to as the "Mini Switzerland of India," and covers around 4 km to Tungnath, with an additional 1.5 km climb to Chandrashila. The weekend trip is ideal for those looking to escape the chaos of city life and spend some peaceful time surrounded by nature, with the bonus of visiting the highest Shiva temple.
Choosing the Right Tungnath Trek Package
Choosing the right Tungnath trek package is crucial for a smooth and hassle-free experience. Most packages offer transportation, accommodation, meals, and a guide. Depending on your starting point, you can find a variety of packages, whether you’re travelling from Rishikesh or opting for a Delhi to Tungnath package. Be sure to pick one that fits your comfort level and adventure goals, as the experience can vary greatly depending on the amenities and services included.
Delhi to Tungnath: The Ultimate Road Trip
If you're planning the trek from Delhi, prepare yourself for a scenic and exciting road trip. The Tungnath trek from Delhi starts with a 12-hour drive covering about 450 km. The route passes through Rishikesh and picturesque hill towns before reaching Chopta. The journey itself is an adventure, offering views of lush valleys, charming villages, and the first glimpses of the towering Himalayan peaks. It’s the perfect way to unwind and get into trekking mode before your ascent.
Weathering the Storm: How to Prepare for the Trek

Triund Trek: Is It Accessible in Winter?
Tumblr media
The Triund Trek is a beloved adventure for trekkers visiting Himachal Pradesh, offering stunning views and a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. But as winter sets in, many adventure seekers wonder: Is the trek still accessible? Can one experience the magic of Triund under a blanket of snow, or should the trek be postponed until warmer weather returns?
Let’s explore the nuances of trekking to Triund during winter and see if this trek remains a viable option when the mercury drops.
The Allure of Triund Trek in Winter
Winter casts a spell on the Triund Trek, transforming it into a pristine, snow-covered paradise. Located at an elevation of 9,350 feet, Triund offers panoramic views of the Dhauladhar range, which are particularly mesmerizing when the peaks are dusted with fresh snow. The sight of the sun rising or setting behind these snowy peaks is enough to take your breath away.
For those willing to brave the cold, the Triund height provides an opportunity to witness the Himalayas in a way that few others do. The trail, which is already known for its scenic beauty, becomes even more enchanting in winter. The forests of oak and rhododendrons are covered in snow, and the crisp winter air adds an element of freshness to the trek.
Winter Challenges: What to Expect in Triund Trek
While the beauty of Triund in winter is undeniable, it’s important to acknowledge the challenges that come with it. The Triund trek height means that temperatures can plummet, especially at night. During the day, the temperature hovers between 2°C to 10°C, but it can drop to sub-zero levels after sunset. The cold can be biting, and the snow-covered paths can make the trek more difficult.
The Mcleodganj trekking community often advises extra caution during winter treks. The snow and ice can make the trail slippery, increasing the risk of falls. Trekkers need to be well-prepared with the right gear, including proper trekking shoes with good grip, warm clothing, and trekking poles. It’s also advisable to carry crampons for added safety on the icy patches.
The trail, which is typically easy to moderate in difficulty, becomes more challenging due to the snow. The trek from McLeodganj to Triund, which normally takes around 4–5 hours, can take longer in winter due to the slower pace needed to navigate the snowy paths. The Triund trek length of 14 kilometres feels longer in the cold, and the altitude can make the climb more strenuous.
Safety Considerations for Triund Trek
One of the biggest concerns for winter trekkers is safety. Is the Triund trek safe in winter? The answer is yes but with precautions. The trek is accessible year-round, but during winter, it’s crucial to check the weather conditions before setting out. Heavy snowfall can sometimes lead to the trail being temporarily closed or certain sections becoming inaccessible.
Trekkers are advised to go with a guide or in a group. The presence of an experienced guide can make a significant difference, as they are familiar with the terrain and can help navigate tricky sections of the trail. Additionally, having a guide means that help is available in case of an emergency.
It’s also important to note that amenities such as food stalls and overnight campsites may be limited during the winter season. Trekkers should be self-sufficient, carrying enough food, water, and emergency supplies.
Why Triund Trek in Winter?
Despite the challenges, many trekkers consider the winter trek to Triund to be an experience of a lifetime. The solitude and tranquillity of the mountains, combined with the stunning snow-covered landscape, make it a unique adventure. The Mcleodganj adventure of trekking to Triund in winter is not just about reaching the top; it’s about the journey itself, the thrill of braving the cold, and the satisfaction of completing a challenging trek.

Preparation Tips for a Successful Winter Triund Trek
If you’re planning to take on the Triund trek in winter, preparation is key. Here are a few tips to ensure a safe and enjoyable trek:
Check the Weather: Before setting out, always check the weather forecast. Avoid trekking during heavy snowfall or if there’s a forecast for a snowstorm.
Pack Warm Clothing: Layering is essential. Carry thermal wear, fleece jackets, a down jacket, woollen socks, gloves, and a beanie. Don’t forget sunglasses and sunscreen, as the snow can reflect sunlight and cause sunburn.
Gear Up: Invest in good quality trekking shoes with a firm grip. Carry trekking poles for balance, and crampons for navigating icy sections.
Stay Hydrated: It’s easy to forget to drink water in the cold, but staying hydrated is crucial. Carry a thermos with hot water or tea.
Hire a Guide: For safety and convenience, consider hiring a local guide. They know the terrain well and can help in case of an emergency.
Start Early: Daylight hours are shorter in winter, so start your trek early to ensure you reach Triund before it gets dark.
Final Thoughts on Triund Trek
Trekking to Triund in winter is not for the faint-hearted, but for those who seek adventure and don’t mind the cold, it’s an experience that will stay with you forever. The Triund trek in winter offers a chance to see the Himalayas at their most majestic, with the added thrill of navigating a snowy trail. So, if you’re up for a winter challenge, pack your gear, prepare well, and embark on the Triund Trek — you won’t be disappointed!

How Difficult is Harihar Fort Trek?
Tumblr media
The Harihar Fort Trek, located in the Nashik district of Maharashtra, India, is renowned for its unique rock-cut steps and panoramic views. However, it is also known for its level of difficulty, which can be challenging for many trekkers. Here’s a detailed look at the difficulty level of the Harihar Fort Trek:
1. Trekking Route and Terrain:
Steep Ascents: The trek involves steep and narrow rock-cut steps, which are almost vertical in some sections. This requires a good balance and a head for heights.
Rugged Path: The trail is rugged and can be slippery, especially during the monsoon season. The rocky terrain demands caution and surefootedness.
Sharp Edges and Narrow Pathways: Certain sections of the trek involve walking along narrow ledges with sharp drops on one side, making it a bit risky for those who are not experienced.
2. Physical Fitness:
Endurance: The trek is physically demanding and requires a good level of endurance. It is advisable for trekkers to have a decent level of physical fitness and stamina.
Strength and Agility: The steep climbs and descents, particularly the near-vertical steps, require strength, agility, and a good grip. Upper body strength is also beneficial for pulling oneself up during the climb.
3. Experience Level:
Not for Beginners: The Harihar Fort Trek is not recommended for beginners due to its challenging nature. Prior trekking experience, especially with steep climbs, is advisable.
Guided Treks Recommended: For those who are not very experienced, it is recommended to go with a guided trekking group. Experienced guides can provide assistance and ensure safety during the trek.
4. Weather Conditions:
Monsoon Challenges: The monsoon season (June to September) makes the trek even more challenging. The steps can become very slippery, increasing the risk of falls. It is advisable to avoid the trek during heavy rains.
Winter Trekking: The best time to undertake the Harihar Fort Trek is during the winter months (October to February). The weather is pleasant, and the path is relatively dry, making it safer and more enjoyable.
5. Safety Precautions:
Proper Gear: Wearing appropriate trekking shoes with a good grip is essential. Carrying a trekking pole can provide additional support and stability.
Stay Hydrated: Carry enough water to stay hydrated throughout the trek. Snacks and energy bars can also be helpful to maintain energy levels.

Exploring the Magical Crystal Cave for Winter
Tumblr media
Crystal Cave located in Iceland
Wandering under the deep blue ceiling of an ice cave is an otherworldly experience. Nothing can prepare you for how blue the ice is in real life. Before visiting, I’d seen so many photos and always wondered if the colour had been photoshopped. It hasn’t! It really is that remarkable. There are several different ice caves you can visit in Iceland, depending on which areas you’re visiting. We opted for the incredible Crystal Cave, also known as Sapphire Cave, which is located on the Vatnajökull glacier, very close to the Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon. Normally we’re all about independent travel, but all ice caves in Iceland must be visited with a guide.
We’re sharing exactly what to expect on the Crystal Cave tour, from difficulty level to how busy it gets.
Tumblr media
What to expect on the Crystal Cave tour
Difficulty
Before we get into the details of the walk to the cave and the experience inside it, I wanted to cover how difficult it is. I’ve had a few glacier walking experiences and sometimes I’ve found it quite easy and sometimes much less so!
The Crystal Cave tour was the easiest glacier walk I’ve ever done. I think partly that’s due to the fact that you don’t have to wear what I would describe as ‘proper crampons’.
Rather than big boots with spikes, you are given a set of chains attached to a rubber band that wrap around your own shoes. This is the first time I’ve been able to wear my own shoes and I found it 100 times easier, and there was never a single moment I thought I might slip.
In addition to the fact the ‘crampons’ are really easy to walk on, you’re almost never actually walking on ice. The walk to the ice cave was on snow and rock up until the last couple of metres.
To enter the cave, you need to walk on ice steps, but it’s not difficult, and once inside there is some ice around, but never anything that felt remotely slippery.
I was surprised and relieved at just how easy it was, particularly as I’d struggled a bit with my last glacier walk!
So conditions aside, the other thing to know is that the walk is almost entirely flat. The terrain underfoot is uneven, but there is only one short section where you have to walk over a couple of rocks. Otherwise it’s straightforward and the lack of hills makes it a breeze.
If you do one of the longer ice cave walks it might be different, but the short tour to Crystal Cave is easy.
The walk
Distance:1.9 km each way
Elevation gain: 7m on the way and 22m on the way back
As you can see from the stats, the walk to reach the cave is almost entirely flat. It took us 25 minutes each way, but we were going at quite a pace because a snow storm was due to roll in a few hours later.
Normally the walk would take around 30-40 minutes and you’d stop for chats about the glacier along the way.
Right from the moment you leave the car park, the scenery is stunning. We’ve done quite a few snowy walks, but this one was on another level. It felt totally wild, with the dark volcanic rock and the pure white snow.
It was absolutely beautiful and I would have wanted to do the walk in and of itself. The fact it leads to a natural blue ice cave is pretty mind blowing, but that’s Iceland for you!
Tumblr media
The terrain underfoot is uneven, but it’s small rocks and not difficult to walk on. The route is pretty clear, but as you’re with a guide anyway, it doesn’t really matter.
For the most part you’re walking alongside the stunning volcanic mountains and shortly before you arrive at the cave, you’ll cross a small metal bridge over a crystal clear stream.
This is the only part of the track where you had to walk over a couple of slightly bigger rocks, it’s not hard, but the guide waits to offer a hand if anyone needs it.
Just before you enter the ice cave there is around a minute’s walk on the glacier where you’ll hold onto a rope.
It’s still easy, but this little bit is icy, so I guess that’s why the rope is there - but honestly it’s not in any way like you’re average hike where you know it’s got a bit sketchy when you see a rope!
To enter the ice cave, you need to head down a few steps cut into the ice. There’s a rope here too and you’re walking between the tall icy cave walls.
You’ll be told to sort of stamp your feet into the ice, but again it’s easy and nothing like other much more slippery glacier walks I’ve done.
After you come down the staircase you’ll walk straight through a short tunnel made of dark ice and into the cave.
Walking inside the cave can be a little uneven in places, but easy.
Inside the incredible blue ice cave
Tumblr media
Your first view of the ice cave is incredible, but it only gets better the further in you go. There’s a big opening to the left which looked like a proper winter wonderland on our visit.
You’ll have about 30 minutes inside the cave and you’ll visit three sections: the opening, the mid-section and the otherworldly blue section.
After enjoying the first section and having a chat about the glacier and how the ice cave forms, we crossed over a small metal bridge. It’s here you’ll be standing under your first section of blue ice.
It’s an incredible place and unlike anywhere I’ve ever been. The one downside is that as this is a tour you don’t get to stay for hours like I normally would in a place this beautiful!
Everyone is given a chance to have a few photos here before you progress further into the cave.
There’s a little dark section to walk through before you reach the most atmospheric part of the cave. It’s completely magical, with deep blue ice across the whole ceiling.
It glows like bioluminescence above you and it’s hard to believe that it’s real!
You get quite a decent amount of time in this section before you retrace your steps back to the larger chamber.
From here you follow a slightly different exit route, under blue ice that looks like waves. It’s breathtaking, and the ceiling is quite low in places, so you feel really close to it.
I could happily have spent hours taking it all in, but you don’t actually walk too far inside the cave, so most people will probably feel it’s long enough.
You exit the cave via a big opening rather than up the staircase again, and then you follow the same route back to the car park.
How easy is it to take photos inside the ice cave?
Tumblr media
This is the tricky bit. As we’re normally used to doing things ourselves, we usually have heaps of time to take photos and tend to visit places early in the morning before crowds arrive. Obviously on a tour this isn’t possible and it does make photo taking harder; more so if you’re really keen on photography, or are a content creator.
If you just want to get some pretty photos of you and, or the ice, it won’t be a problem. Most people are considerate inside the cave, so you can get a picture with no one in it (more so in the bigger chamber).
When it comes to trying to get different compositions etc, it’s not easy because you are limited on time. It’s more like snap what you can, aside from that the bigger chamber where you can take a some pics and everyone basically waits for each other. The photos in this guide are a good representation of what you can realistically take on a group tour.
If we’re lucky enough to visit Iceland in ice cave season again one day, I’d love to return and would look at doing an extended tour, or a photography tour - although these are more expensive of course!
Photography tips for inside the ice cave
Firstly, the weather will make a difference. Whilst you may think a sunny day is ideal for photos, the huge hole in the large chamber will create shadows that make editing difficult. Having cloudy even light will mean you can get good photos without harsh shadows. In addition to this, the final part of the cave with the exceptionally blue ceiling is also best on a cloudy day. Again it’s about the uneven light - luckily cloudy days are pretty common in Icelandic winter!
Secondly, to get the full scale of the cave, you will want to shoot with a wide angle lens. This can be 0.5 on your phone, or a lens on your camera that is ideally between 16-25mm. This will help take in more of that glorious icy blue ceiling.
Finally, the cave is surprisingly dark in a lot of places. Be prepared to take photos in a way that will minimise shake which will cause blur. We didn’t use a tripod because we didn’t think there was really time to set it up. We used a shutter speed at 1/60th second or higher, with a low aperture and a high ISO.
Crowds inside Crystal Cave
Tumblr media
Crystal Cave is one of the most impressive ice caves in Iceland and relatively easy to access, so it’s naturally a popular place to visit. The fact the walk is easy and the tour only lasts between 3-4 hours means it will also fit into most people’s schedule.
Depending on which tour operator you use, groups can be small or large, and multiple groups are likely to be in the cave at the same time. I would advise only booking with a company that offers smallish groups. We went with Local Guide, as they try to run at a time that avoids the big bus tours and we asked them ahead of time about crowds.
They’ll be really honest with you and tell you how many people are booked on each tour. If you tell them you want to go at the least busy time they can advise which tour has the most spaces still available (which is what we did).
It was busyish inside the cave by my standards, but that’s because we’re almost always alone at places. I think most people would probably think it’s not overly busy - but a storm was coming the afternoon we visited so some tour companies had less visitors than usual.
Basically my advice would be to ask the tour company ahead of time for the least busy time slot and hopefully it won’t be too crowded.
You can take private tours and if funds allow this would be an amazing experience! Although you won’t necessarily get the cave to yourself as various companies operate tours to the cave, you would have more flexibility and you wouldn’t have to wait for anyone in your own group to take photos.
You can check prices & availability for Local Guide’s tour below:
The jeep ride to the ice cave
The first five minutes of your journey to the ice cave will be on a paved road. After that you’ll enter the volcanic landscape on a dirt track, which goes for about 20 minutes. I was kind of nervous about this bit because I am not a fan of really bumpy rides - dune bashing is basically my idea of hell!
Luckily the journey isn’t bad at all. The guides drive really slowly and though the vehicle rocks a little at points, it’s never like it sometimes is on sand dunes when you feel like the car might go over. It always feels stable and the scenery is gorgeous.
What to wear inside the ice cave
I wore my standard hiking gear plus a few extras. However you could wear a normal top as it’s not very exerting, so you don’t really need special hiking gear. Don’t wear jeans though as you want quick drying clothes that won’t leach your body heat.
For Iceland in winter, I’d recommend buying a good down jacket. If you get a lightweight version like I have, you’ll definitely need a good set of thermals.
Thermals
I’d also recommend thermals and we’ve used Icebreaker for years. Having good quality merino base layers is a worthy investment - I have used cheap ones before, but you do get what you pay for!
I wore a thermal top and bottoms which made a big different and combined with my down jacket, I was actually toasty and the temperature was -7C. By the time I got to the cave I had to take my hat off because I was overheating!
Hand and feet warmers
The real game changer for me though was hand and foot warmers, something I only recently purchased, specifically for Iceland. I can normally keep my core body really warm with thermals, but my hands and feet suffer even with gloves. Hand and foot warmers were amazing and really kept me warm the whole way through.
I only needed my Icebreaker glove liners with the hand warmers, instead of big marshmallow style gloves that I would otherwise have needed in these temperatures.
Other items
Otherwise you’ll want a decent pair of shoes, I wore hiking trainers and a waterproof coat might come in handy (although I didn’t need mine).
The tour company will give you the crampons and helmet. If you don’t have hiking boots or a rain jacket you can rent them (or you could with Local Guide anyway!).
Crystal Ice Cave logistics
The ice cave tours tend to run from October to the end of March, but as they are natural formations it can vary slightly year by year. The season was set to run into April when we visited.
The short tours like the one we did last for about 3-4 hours, but you can do a 6-7 hour tour, which includes more time on the glacier.
Our cave tour began at Jökulsárlón, which is roughly 5 hours from Reykjavík and 2.5 hours from Vik. There is an option to do an ice cave tour from Vik as well, which I’d like to try one day, but based purely on my research, it didn’t look quite as good as the cave at Jökulsárlón.
Most companies tend to have two tours a day in the height of the season, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Based on companies we spoke to, they do try to avoid having overlapping and having too many groups inside the cave at any one time, but some overlap is inevitable.
Tours start at around USD $135 and up. You might find something cheaper, but this seemed relatively standard from companies I looked at.
Where to stay near the Crystal Cave
Hali Country Hotel
We stayed at the Hali Country Hotel. It was the only hotel we stayed at which didn’t have self catering facilities - but I actually couldn’t find one that did close to the ice cave area. The hotel was really nice, with a big comfy bed and good shower. We also had a great view over the frozen bay.
At the end of the corridor you have a hot drinks area where you can make free tea and coffee. We will admit to also making pot noodles here to cut down on the cost of eating out : ) We actually got caught in a snow storm in this area and had to extend our stay, so also ended up eating at the restaurant. The food was good, but does cost upwards of USD $30 a main.
The staff are very friendly and the brekkie is included in the room rate. You’re a 12 minute drive from the lagoon and ice cave tours.
One downside is that inexplicably they keep external lights on outside the hotel at night and the curtains aren’t thick enough to completely block all the light. This bothered me, but didn’t bother Joe, so it depends how sensitive a sleeper you are!
Special thanks to Local Guide of Vatnajökul for inviting us to join them on this tour. All opinions in this guide are our own as always and we would recommend this trip to friends and family, which is our benchmark for anything we recommend in our blog.

North Star ✶ Chapter 8
A Levi Ackerman x oc slow burn
Previous Chapter | Next Chapter | Series Masterlist | AO3
The Jul holidays bring an unexpected guest...and unexpected feelings begin to emerge for you and Levi.
Tumblr media
You can’t recall the last time you’d actually celebrated Jul.
Was it five years ago? Six? You’re fairly certain it was well before Martin died, as the last years of his life were typically spent abroad fighting for Marley. It had never felt right to celebrate without him, and as you had no other family, the day was often spent quietly at home, a fire burning in the hearth as you knit or read. Someday, you thought, when Martin and I  have children and the wars have ceased, we’ll have a proper Jul, just like we’d had with his family when we were children.
When you had a family again.
After The Rumbling, you’d resigned yourself to the fact that you’d never experience those types of family celebrations again. To do that would mean that life was normal, and the world was anything but. Even now, almost four years later, Humanity was still rebuilding and picking up the pieces. Holidays, music, art - the very things that gave enjoyment and meaning to life - felt like frivolous indulgences.
But little by little, you saw people in your community beginning to celebrate traditions again. People were singing the old, familiar Jul songs and visiting loved ones in other cities and towns. Just the fact that Mursa held the bridge ceremony and chose a glevora showed that some things couldn’t be taken away, and that culture and beliefs could hold steadfast, even amidst such an upheaval.
Without the coldness of winter, we wouldn’t treasure the heat of summer.
Life keeps going, so maybe you should too. Martin had told you to live, but is it really that easy?
And first, you had to recover. The last few days since Levi brought you down from Mount Aspe have felt like a blur, a fever dream. You remember flashes of time: Levi’s arms around you as he held you close next to the fire of the cave, his worried face as he carried you into the house, his voice telling you to drink. Through it all, he had been there, and you’re not sure you would have survived if not for him.
How do you repay someone for that?
Last night, he’d let you cry on his shoulder until you’d exhausted yourself. He held you in his arms as you sobbed, your own arms reaching around him and gripping the back of his shirt. He didn’t say a word - he didn’t need to. Just his presence alone was all you needed.
When you wake up the following day, you are tucked in tightly in your bed, layers of blankets on top of you. You slowly emerge from the covers, not even sure what time it is, but knowing that you need to talk to Levi; you want to thank him for all he’s done for you and tell him that you treasure his friendship.
Suddenly, you can hear voices and a clatter in the kitchen.
You put on a cardigan over your pajamas and slip your feet into your house shoes, slowly ambling down the hallway and through the corridor. You recognize Levi’s and Mathieu’s voices, but there is someone else with them, someone female.
It can’t be..
You open the door of the kitchen to see Levi taking out various pots and pans while Mathieu unwraps a rack of lamb ribs. Then your eyes glance over to the other person who seems to be orchestrating the scene.
“Annika..” you say with surprise.
The tall redhead is quickly in front of you and pulling you in close. She smells like the outdoors, evergreen trees and fresh snow.
“Oh thank god, you’re alright,” she says, hugging you tighter.
Your arms wrap around her, feeling like you’re embracing a ghost. “I haven’t seen you in ages…”
“…since before this whole world went to hell, I know.” She releases you from her embrace and looks at you sincerely. “I’m sorry I haven’t been back sooner. It’s been difficult to get up here from the south these past few years. With the train tracks rebuilt, I was finally able to come back to visit Mother and Father for the Yul and New Year, but when I heard what had happened I came straight over to check on you.” Her piercing green eyes shoot over to Levi. “But when I got here, this guy,” she points at Levi with her chin, “wouldn’t let me go in your room.”
Levi is unfazed by Annika’s annoyance. “She needs her rest. And you’re seeing her now.”
It surprises you that Annika would listen to Levi at all, but lately he’s been giving off a stronger aura of authority. Could it be for you? You don’t linger on that thought too long as you notice the two glaring at each other, so you decide an explanation is in order. “Annika has been my friend since childhood. She moved to Southern Marley before The Rumbling.”
“We know, she’s told us all about it.” Levi replies as he places the skillet on the stove. “In fact, she hasn’t stopped talking since she got here.”
Mathieu speaks up before Levi can say anything else. “You, Annika, and Martin were inseparable back in the day. It’s good to see you two together again, after so long.”
“I can’t believe you’re actually here!” you exclaim as you hug her again. With the shock of seeing Annika, you’d barely noticed the activity in the kitchen. “What are you three up to?”
“While I was waiting for you to wake up, Mathieu just happened to also come by and I found out that neither of these men had planned a Yul dinner. So I’m putting them to work.”
“It’s not like I know any of this stuff.” Levi defends, walking over to you and giving you a mug of ginger and cinnamon tea, which he’d brewed during all the excitement. “Here, drink this. It’ll warm you up.”
“Thank you,” you say as you take the mug. You don’t see the smile that forms across Annika’s face as she looks at you and Levi, noticing that his voice and demeanor change when he interacts with you.
“I wasn’t going to cook for just myself, so I welcomed the invitation.” Mathieu adds as he lays the rack of lamb on a pan. “And a customer had given me some sausage and lamb - it’d be a shame for it to go to waste on just me.”
Maybe it’s the sentimentality of the holidays, or maybe it’s because you're mentally and physically exhausted, but seeing Annika, Levi, and Mathieu making Jul dinner brings a few tears to your eyes. You bite your bottom lip to keep from crying. “You all don’t have to do this.”
“You’re right, we don’t,” Annika responds, “but we want to. And besides, we all need to eat.”
She takes your arm. “Now let’s get a bath started and get you ready for dinner; Gentlemen, I’ll leave you to it until I return. The recipes are on the table there.” Annika whisks you out of the kitchen and into the bathroom, where she starts drawing you a bath.
“This all feels so unreal, having you here.”
“I know, we have so much to catch up on,” she says, cupping your cheeks with her hands. “But first, a bath. I’ll be back in a few to help you dress.”
Annika leaves to join the others in the kitchen while you disrobe, stepping your legs out of the flannel pajamas you wear in the winter months and into the warm bath water. It’s an instant balm; the water relieving your muscles, still sore from the days on Mount Aspe. If you could, you’d stay here all day, because even though you appreciate the kindness of your friends and you want to catch up with Annika, there’s reluctance in your heart.
It’s Jul, a time to fellowship with friends and family and to celebrate the bonds you share with others. But the person you love most (Loved most? Do you use the past tense now?) isn’t here.
Annika, however, is here; and although you’re eager to catch up with her, you’re nervous too. Are you the same person you were when you two were the best of friends? Is she?
Are any of us the same people we were before The Rumbling?
——- ✶ ——-
Annika makes quick work of organizing the kitchen and setting the men to work chopping, peeling, and blending. To Levi, she looks pampered and spoiled - not at all the kind of person who can handle themselves in the kitchen. And not at all the kind of person he gets along with.
“If we time everything right, we can have dinner ready in the next hour,” she says, quickly chopping some onions and throwing them into a bowl. She sees Levi cutting turnips and glances at his hand. “Do you need help with that?”
At first, he’s confused as to what she means. He's gotten so used to working with three fingers, that he forgets sometimes. He bristles at the realization of her comment. “I can cut a turnip without needing help. I’m not a damned invalid.”
Annika puts up her hands in surrender, “I didn’t say that you were. No need to be prissy about it.”
“Prissy?” Levi has been called many things in his life, but never - never - prissy. He sets the knife down. “What’s that supposed to mean —”
Before he can finish his question, Annika has grabbed his hand, studying the area of the two missing digits. “A clean break at the first joint…that’s surprising for such an injury. The impact must have been fast…and intense.” She sweeps her fingers against the scarred tissue. “And whoever stitched you up clearly knew what they were doing. Incredible…”
Having his hand touched in such a way shocked him at first, which accounted for why he let her hold it longer than he felt comfortable. He finally draws his hand back and glares. He wants to curse at her so badly, tell her to fuck off, but since living with you, he’s been trying to be better at how he speaks to others.
Because even though he could give two shits about what other people think, he cares what you think. And Annika is your friend.
Mathieu realizes that he’ll need to play referee as long as these two are in a room together. “Annika, you must still be studying to be a doctor.”
His comment takes her attention away from Levi. “No longer studying. I’ll be Doctor Annika Warnod as of this spring.” Her face beaming with pride. “I’m actually thinking of staying here in Mursa and working with Dr. Egli.”
“Well, we’ll have to toast to that at dinner!” Mathieu remarks. “You and Catherine have grown to be such fine, remarkable women.”
“Speaking of which,” Annika adds, “who’s been administering care for Catherine as she recovers from her hypothermia?”
“I have,” comes Levi’s reply.
“You started her on a liquid-only diet?”
“For the first day, yes. And once her body temperature was up I gave her warm baths.” He glares at Annika again. “I know what I’m doing.”
She raises an eyebrow at Levi. “You gave her baths?” She smirks. “Hmm..It seems there’s more to you than meets the eye.”
Was that a fucking eye joke? Before Levi can respond, Annika is out of her apron and walking toward the door.
“I’m going to go help Catherine get dressed. I’ll leave the rest to you two.” She winks, before leaving.
“Good riddance,” Levi replies, under his breath.
——- ✶ ——-
There’s a knock on your door and Annika enters while you’re in your underthings and a robe, brushing your hair. “Is everything ok in there?” you ask. “I should come help..”
“No, no. You’ve done enough the past week. Let us do something for you.” She walks around the bedroom and sees the altar with your wedding picture and the delicate baby booties. “Oh Catherine..”
You look and see what she is referring to. “It’s been a difficult three years.”
“For all of us, but for you to lose the baby too..I should have been here.”
“I actually thought you were dead for the longest time, and your parents hadn’t seen or heard from you until last year.” you stop brushing your hair, memories flooding back of those dark times.
“I know. I’m sorry I didn’t write. It was nearly impossible to get letters out here. The postal service is a wreck.” She goes to your closet and looks through your clothes, eyes intensely focused on each item, as if attempting to not look at you.  “And I guess I was ashamed that I wasn’t here to help Mursa through all this. To help you.” Her hands suddenly stop skimming the fabrics.
“We’ve all just been doing what we need to do to survive and rebuild. Nobody holds anything against you, Annika. Especially not me.”
You both hug each other again, the kind of embrace shared between two long lost friends. Annika sighs. “You’ve been here all alone.”
You shake your head. “No, not really alone. Opening up the house to tenants has made it less lonely, and certainly busier than I imagined. It’s been good.”
“Speaking of tenants..tell me about this Levi Ackerman.”
Levi has opened up to you quite a bit about his life before coming to Mursa, but you’re not sure how much he wants others to know. You decide to keep that information to yourself. “He just showed up here this summer. He’s a veteran, I think.”
“He’s got an attitude and seems insufferable. I’m not sure how you put up with it.”
“He can be abrasive at first, but once you get to know him, he’s actually quite kind and considerate. He helped me get into Fort Salta when I wanted to communicate with Martin, and when I was stranded on the mountain during the blizzard, he came up to get me. I would have probably died if it wasn’t for him.”
Annika pulls a dress out of your closet and gives it to you, a smile on her face. “Sounds like he’s fond of you.”
“What? No, he’s just…” you take the dress and move behind your dressing screen, suddenly tongue tied, “..kind, like I said. He’s my friend, nothing more.”
“Maybe nothing more for you, but I saw how he was looking at you.”
“He’s concerned about my health.”
“He cares for you, I can tell that much.” You move out from behind the screen and she pulls you to your vanity mirror. “And that’s ok, you know, for you to see other men. It’s been three years and the mourning time is over. Martin would want you to find someone.”
Your body goes tense. You don’t want to have this conversation again. “I don’t - I’m not ready for that. I’m fine on my own.”
Annika sighs, then starts brushing your hair. “Suit yourself. But you’re too young and pretty to be languishing in this house by yourself. And surrounded by all these men day in and day out,” there’s a click of her tongue, “what a waste,” she laments, as she pins your hair into a low bun.
You had always admired Annika’s brazen honesty and carefree personality. She was strong-willed and adventurous, the exact foil to your meek and introverted nature. To everyone’s surprise you became fast friends as children and into adulthood; proof that opposites can attract in friendship as well. The two of you were really a perfect balance for each other: you kept her grounded and she gave you the courage to take more chances.
She was also beautiful: fiery red hair and bright green eyes that matched her lively personality. She’d had no shortage of suitors in the past, but was determined to leave Mursa and make a way for herself by going to medical school, which you supported fully. She seemed perfect to you: well-spoken, well-bred, and always well-dressed.
So it’s no surprise that she’s looking through your closet to find your nicest dress, or putting your hair up and gliding makeup over your face. She’d always thought about these little details, whereas you’d never been one to care much about it.
Annika sweeps some blush over your cheeks and eyelids, and it instantly makes you look more alive and healthy. Looking in the mirror, you smile at the change.
“How are you feeling?” Annika asks as she swipes a berry-colored lipstick on your lips.
“Tired, but good. Levi has been taking good care of me.”
“I’m sure he has,” your friend teases.
“Annika!”
“What? I mean that in the purest of ways.”
“Annika, you’re terrible,” you say as you nudge her shoulder teasingly.
“Ugh, speaking of terrible, I have to tell you all about this awful date I had with a man I met from Hizuru..”
——- ✶ ——-
Levi can hear the two of you laughing from the kitchen. Although your friend annoys him, he’s relieved to hear your laugh and to see your eyes brighten again. He hates to see you so sad and broken, for you to think that you’re a failure because you couldn’t finish the ceremony on your own. It frustrates him that you can't see your own strength.
“Levi, I think you’ve mashed the turnips enough,” Matthieu chides. “Keep doing that, and you’ll pound them straight into the ground.”
Matieu’s voice snaps Levi back to reality. He stops mashing the turnips, and transfers them to a serving dish, a slight blush on his face.
Mathieu laughs. “Your head must be in the clouds.” Levi doesn’t respond, but continues putting the finishing touches on the dish. “If you’re worried about Catherine, she’s going to be ok, thanks to you. You did a good thing going and getting her off that mountain, and then taking care of her these last few days.”
“I know, but..” Levi can feel himself getting nervous just talking about you to someone else. He busies himself with preparing the dishes, avoiding Mathieu’s knowing gaze. “..I wish she wouldn’t be so hard on herself about this whole glevora thing. She should be proud of what she accomplished.”
“I’ve known Catherine for a long time and she has always been overly critical of herself. Despite the unconditional love Martin’s family and Martin himself gave her, it always seemed that because she was an orphan she considered herself ‘less than’ everyone else. It’s a pity she can’t see herself the way the rest of us see her.”
Levi hums an agreement. He can understand that well enough: the feeling of needing to be more, to do more. Perhaps your friend’s return will help you physically and emotionally. If that’s the case, Levi reckons he can tolerate her a bit longer.
Little by little the kitchen fills with the smells of holiday cooking, which eventually spreads to other parts of the house.
“Ladies! Dinner is ready!” Mathieu shouts jovially.
“Coming!” replies Annika, as the two of you walk, arm in arm, through the house and into the dining room, singing a traditional Yule song.
Hearing your laughter, Levi pushes the kitchen door open that links to the dining room and stops immediately upon seeing you.
Your berry-tinted lips smile at him and your hands straighten out the creases in your cream colored blouse, the lace collar framing your collarbone like snowflakes. The waistband of your skirt is cinched with a black leather belt, which accents the curve of your hips. Levi swallows. You look..
“…Beautiful..” Mathieu says, as he kisses yours and Annika’s cheeks. “I don’t think I’ve ever had such lovely Yule dinner guests in all my life.”
“Nice apron,” Annika says to Levi, her eyebrow cocked and a smirk on her hips. He had put Catherine’s apron on to protect his clothing while he cooked, and had completely forgotten to take it off before entering the dining room. He unties it quickly and yanks at the frilly shoulder straps before throwing it in the kitchen.
There are few times that Levi has felt embarrassed in his life. This is one of those moments. But then he sees you smiling at him.
“No, no, Levi, it looks good on you,” you joke, your face beaming, your laughter captivating. He suddenly forgets about any embarrassing feelings merely by watching the joy on your face, as your eyes dart from him to the food displayed on the table.
A rack of roasted lamb ribs is served as the main course and displayed in the center of the table. Around it are the other staples of a traditional Jul dinner in Mursa: roasted potatoes coated with butter and herbs, mashed turnips, an array of sauces and spreads, pork and elk sausages, and breads and cookies Annika made and brought from her family home. You can’t remember the last time you’d had such a feast.
“We need candles!” Annika exclaims as she takes out the old candelabra from the hutch and lights each candle, but one. She lowers the lights as everyone finds their seat at the table, Levi sitting across from you.
You sit down with your friends, in awe. “Having you all here, celebrating with you..I feel a hundred times better. I’m truly speechless.”
Mathieu’s hand slaps Levi’s shoulder. “In my life, I’ve found that there isn’t much that good food and good friends can’t mend.” He then gestures toward the candles. “Shall I do the honors?”
“Please,” you respond.
Mathieu lifts one of the lit candles out of its holder and lights the candle in the center. “May the light of these candles remind us that even on the darkest of nights, there is always light.”
Levi stiffens as Mathieu takes his hand, then he notices that everyone is linking hands, you reaching across the table, waiting for him.
He places his hand in yours, your delicate fingers curling around his. In all the physical situations he’s been with you these past few days, he’s never felt the warmth of your hand, the softness of it.
Everyone bows their head as Mathieu clears his throat. “This Jul, we remember those loved ones we’ve lost to this world and who are waiting for us in the next. May their light and their love someday lead us to be together again.”
You squeeze Levi’s hand and look up to see his brows knitted, concerned.
“Are you ok?”
You feel a wetness on your cheek. Without realizing, a few tears are running down your face. “Oh goodness..yes, I’m fine.” Noticing that all eyes are on you, you quickly wipe the cheek and change the subject. “This all looks so delicious - let’s eat!”
——- ✶ ——-
With the meal eaten and stories told, Mathieu and Annika help clean up and prepare to leave, the evening coming to an end. You walk them to the door and hug them both.
“Thank you - both of you - for all of this. It means so much to me.”
“I’m just glad to see that you’re alright,” Mathieu says.
Annika gives you a kiss on the cheek. “I’m in town until New Year’s Day, so I’ll be by again soon.” She looks over to Levi, “That is, if your guard dog will let me see you.”
Levi just scowls, leaning against the stairway bannister as the two say their farewells and trudge through the snow. With just you and Levi in the house, it’s suddenly very quiet. The two of you linger in silence for a few moments, the awkwardness of being alone together finally setting in.
“Well, I guess I’ll go to bed.” Levi says, plainly. “Goodnight,”
“Wait..could you stay up with me? Just a little longer.” Your hand reaches out to touch his arm.
Even that small gesture makes Levi’s heart skip a beat. “Sure. I’ll put another log on the fire.”
“Maybe I should go change. I feel silly with all this on.” You touch your face and hair.
“You looked great –” he shakes his head, “--look great. Healthy, I mean.”
Shit, why can he not talk all of a sudden?
He walks awkwardly over to the fireplace, grabbing some logs and placing them on the fire. “What I mean is, you look happy. And content. It’s good to see you like that.”
“You’re a big part of that.” You sit down on the sofa. “I don’t know how I can properly thank you, for all you’ve done for me this week.”
“You don’t have to thank me.” He almost sits next to you on the sofa, but thinks better of it, and sits in a chair across from you.
“Thanking you is the absolute least I can do. If it wasn’t for you, I would have died, Levi.” You stare at the fire, sparking to life in the fireplace. “I thought I was prepared, that I was strong enough.”
“You didn’t know there was going to be a storm. If that hadn’t happened, you would have been fine. I did for you what any person would do for a friend.” He glances at you, seeing the guilt on your face. “I’m impressed with you, to be honest. I was trained in winter survival, but winters here are on a whole other level.”
“You know, I’ve never really liked winter. Ever since I was small, I loved growing things - flowers, vegetables, indoor plants. To plant a seed, nurture the soil, to find out what it needs to thrive…and the excitement of seeing all your hard work come to fruition when it blooms, or begins to produce - this was the greatest thrill for me. So when the first hard freeze would kill everything, and I had to clean out all the dead leaves and vines, I would actually cry. “Why does winter have to come?” I’d ask Martin’s mother. And I’ll never forget what she told me: ‘Without the coldness of winter, we wouldn’t treasure the heat of summer.’  When I was young, I had no idea what that meant.”
You smile a bit to yourself, sadly, reminiscing. “But I understand now. It’s all a cycle, isn’t it? Birth, growth, death,” you pause, “rebirth. Truly living is to accept all these things, knowing that one doesn’t happen without the other.”
“I guess I’ve never thought about it much before,” Levi lies. Of course he’d thought about it, every time he had to put a comrade in the grave, when he had to choose Erwin or Eren, when he saw Hange sacrifice themself to save them all. He would wonder: Is this all there is to life? Just a never ending cycle of death?
He’d never really been able to appreciate life and all its moments. But Hange had told him, he’s not dead yet. He’s still here. He’s alive. It’s not over.
Hange had said, “…your time on this earth is a gift…” Life before this has never felt that way, but now - maybe - with you, here in this place..
Silence has overtaken both of you again, the fire crackling and burning. He doesn’t want the evening to end like this, so he shifts in his chair and decides he might as well just spit it out.
He clears his throat. “Speaking of growth..”
Fuck, he thinks, this is already awkward.
“It’s, uh, my….birthday….today.”
Your head jerks towards him and he can feel his face getting hot. “I mean, this is when my friends decided to celebrate it. I don’t really know my actual birthday.”
“Levi..you’re just telling me now?”
“It’s not a big deal.”
“IT IS a big deal!” You stand up and immediately head toward the kitchen. “Don’t go anywhere, just wait a minute.”
Levi hears clattering in the kitchen and then silence. A few moments later, you walk into the room with half a walnut bread from earlier in the evening and a slightly used candle.
Levi can’t help but let out a small, breathy laugh. “What’s all this?”
“Well, I don’t have any cake, so bread will have to do for now. And for some reason I can never bring myself to throw away half used candles after someone’s birthday, so here you go.” You giggle, despite yourself, then place the platter in front of Levi.
He just looks at it, confused. “What am I supposed to do now?”
“You don’t do this in Paradis for birthdays?” To which Levi shakes his head. “First, you make a wish, then you blow out the candle.”
Levi just raises an eyebrow. “Really?” But when he sees the smile on your face, the first real smile you’ve given him in so long, he can’t help but comply. “Fine. I wish…”
“No, silly! You think about the wish! It has to be kept a secret or it won’t come true.” You laugh, and it’s like music to him.
“Ok..” Levi is silent for a moment while thinking about what to wish for, then with one puff, blows out the candle.
You cut two small slices for each of you, then lift your piece up towards Levi.
“To life,” you say, before taking a bite.
“…to life,” Levi replies, a faint smile growing across his lips.

Across the Kashmir Valley and over the famous Zoji La pass lies Ladakh, the Land of High Passes. It is a magical land, so completely different from the green landscape of some other parts of the Himalayas. It is nature at its extreme. A land of freezing winds and blazing sunlight, Ladakh is a cold desert lying in the rain shadow of the Great Himalayas and other smaller ranges. Little rain and snow reach this dry area, where the natural forces have created a fantastic landscape.
Ladakh forms part of the state of Jammu and Kashmir in India. Parts of Ladakh are under the illegal occupation of Pakistan and China. The border of Ladakh touches those of Afghanistan, Pakistan, China, the Kashmir Valley (India), and Himachal Pradesh (India). This region is made up of two administrative districts — Leh District, with its headquarters at Leh, and Kargil District, with its headquarters at Kargil –and covers a total area of about 59,000 square kilometers.
Ladakh is at an average elevation of 2,700 m to 4,200 m. The aridity of this region is due to its location in the rainshadow area of the Great Himalayas, elevation, and radiation of heat from the bare soil. The most striking physical feature of Ladakh, however, is the parallelism of its mountain ranges. The region is extremely dry, with annual rainfall as low as 10 cubic centimeters.
In Ladakh, large rivers and their tributaries have carved deep gorges far below their steep banks. However, their water is not of much use as the terraced fields lie high above the gorges.

The LIFE HUB Winter Shelter for adults experiencing homelessness in the city of Wheeling is set to close on Saturday, March 16, after the last night on Friday. The LIFE HUB Winter Shelter served over 360 unduplicated guests this winter at its shelter location in the former English Lutheran Church, 35-16th Street in downtown Wheeling. “Ohio County is blessed with several social service agencies and faith-based communities dedicated to providing resources within their mission to assist the poor and homeless. Collaborative efforts are important for the low barrier shelter to operate during the winter and beyond,” stated Melissa Adams, the City of Wheeling Homeless Liasian. Meals were provided throughout the Winter by LIFE HUB Community Partners the Catholic Neighborhood Center, the Soup Kitchen, and HoH-Share at their locations. Street Moms provided street outreach, The Greater Wheeling Coalition for the Homeless provided services, and partnering agencies offered showers and laundry. The current church building will undergo renovations and the construction on-site of a new shelter building in the near future that will include showers and laundry facilities. Helping Heroes coordinated shelter services for Veterans. YWCA Wheeling housed victims of domestic violence. Families were sheltered at partnering organizations or in hotel rooms when needed. Project Hope made regular rounds and provided care for medical needs. “It takes an entire community to ensure those in need have the proper care and coordination for wraparound services. The LIFE HUB is so grateful to all our community partners. We cannot thank them enough for their partnerships,” stated Joyce Wolen, Wheeling Housing Authority Executive Director. John Moses, LIFE HUB Winter Shelter Director, stressed that the LIFE HUB will continue collaborating with community partners to coordinate homeless services beyond the shelter and to ensure basic emergent needs are addressed quickly and efficiently. Housed individuals and families needing rental assistance or utility assistance can continue to call 211, another community partner through the United Way of the Upper Ohio Valley. “We are grateful for all of the individuals, organizations, foundations and faith-based organizations that have supported our efforts through financial and In-Kind gifts over the last 14 years,” said Moses. “We thank them for their continued support this year. The LIFE HUB and its winter shelter would not happen without these generous benefactors. “I also want to thank the hard-working night staff and maintenance for providing a safe, warm environment each night this winter. This would be very difficult to do without their care coordination.” “We are also so grateful to the faith-based community for their donations of time, talent, and treasure,” added Deacon George Smoulder, who is leading faith-based initiatives for the LIFE HUB. “We must remember that we are called to serve those in need with dignity and respect. Our local faith-based communities have always stepped up to assist when the need is great.” Checks may be made out to the LIFE HUB nonprofit and mailed to P.O. Box 2089; Wheeling, WV 26003. A website landing page can securely accept online donations at lifehubwv.org. Cash donations are used to purchase items such as work uniforms, scrubs, workstyle boots, shoes, and bus tokens. Donations will be used beyond the winter to prevent homelessness, get individuals and families into housing, and ensure the most vulnerable and sick people have access to shelter to convalesce. The LIFE HUB was created as a nonprofit organization in 2022, as a program of the Wheeling Housing Authority partnering with the City of Wheeling. The goal of the LIFE HUB is to operate a spacious shelter year-round for homeless adults and families. The program will also provide a variety of services under one roof to help strategically and compassionately the homeless successfully navigate through a variety of systems that include housing, employment, education, health, and mental health, to ensure a rapid response to basic emergent needs and prevent homelessness.
