What would you do? HUNGER (Steven Hentges, 2009)
People who automatically flinch at the idea of cannibal movies (or cannibalism generally) give a little mental shrug when the subject turns to starvation. What would you do if you had no food, nothing containing any life-giving nourishment except other human bodies? The honest answer to that is, usually, ‘I don’t know, and I hope never to find out’. Several films considered in this blog have…

Cleveland Indians-Minnesota Twins Series Preview
8.9.24-TBA Vs. Bailey Ober (11-5) 3.69 ERA
8.9.24-Alex Cobb RHP (7-7) 3.87 ERA Vs. Louie Varland RHP (0-4) 6.58 ERA
8.10.24-Gavin Williams RHP (1-4) 4.91 ERA Vs. Simeon Woods Richardson RHP (3-2) 3.87 ERA
8.11.24-Tanner Bibee RHP (9-4) 3.48 ERA Vs. David Festa RHP (2-2) 5.55 ERA
The Indians At A Glance- The Indians have had a tough past week with five straight losses. Their lead in the division is down to 3.5 games after the Diamondbacks swept them in Cleveland. They now head to Minnesota for a huge series against the Twins this weekend. The Indians made a few minor moves at the trade deadline. They picked up Alex Cobb from the Giants and Lane Thomas from the Nationals. Jose Ramirez has been hot after the All-Star Break with a .338 average, seven homers, and nineteen knocked in. Cleveland is averaging four runs per game since the break. Tanner Bibee hs been dealing with a shoulder injury and will likely start on Sunday. Alex Cobb will try to return in one of the game's on Friday. He hasn't pitched all season due to a hip issue. Matt Boyd is making his way back from an elbow injury and Sam Hentges is on a rehab assignment with Columbus. The Indians have the best bullpen is baseball with a 2.68 ERA. Emmanuel Clase has given up just four runs over 52 1/3 innings of work. Hunter Gaddis is striking out nearly a guy per inning, Tim Herrin has been good, and Cade Smith has a 2.14 ERA.
The Twins At A Glance- The Twins had a tough time on a little road trip to Wrigley. They shutout the Cubs on the first night then lost the next two games. The team returns home for a huge homestand with the Indians and Royals. Joe Ryan left Wednesday's game with a right triceps injury and there is some optimism that it won't be a serious issue. Kyle Farmer started a rehab assignment with the Saints as he works his way back. Byron Buxton didn't play all week against the Cubs with a back injury. Steven Okert was put on the bereavement list on Monday, but should be back this weekend. Carlos Correa won't return this weekend as he gets his way back from a foot injury. Justin Topa continues his rehab assignment with the Saints and should be activated soon. Royce Lewis has four homers and thirteen RBI since the All-Star Break. Louie Varland will get called up to start one of the games on Friday. The bullpen should be well rested as Randy Dobnak and Josh Winder had long outings the past two games.
What To Watch For- The Indians have won all five meetings against the Twins this year. They won both games of a shortened series in April and all three games in Cleveland. The makeup game from the April 7th game will be on Friday afternoon. Bailey Ober is (1-2) with a 2.53 ERA in six starts against the Indians. Alex Cobb is (4-3) with a 4.86 ERA in ten starts against the Twins. Louie Varland has a 4.50 ERA in eight innings against the Tribe. Gavin Williams has a 1.50 ERA in two starts against the Twins. Simeon Woods Richardson went 5 1/3 innings and allowed a run in his lone start against the Indians. Tanner Bibee has a 2.96 ERA in five starts against the Twins. David Festa has never faced the Indians before. Both teams are at interesting spots. The Twins have Chris Paddack and Joe Ryan out for the moment and the Indians have guys like Alex Cobb and Tanner Bibee returning from the injured list. This is a huge four-game series to determine the American League Central race.

Indians Edge Twins.
Twins 3 Indians 4 W-Stephen (2-1) L-Alcala (0-1) SV-Clase (11)
The Minnesota Twins have rebounded nicely after two losses to start the road trip with a pair of wins. They looked to take the series today with ace Sonny Gray on the mound in Cleveland. Sonny Gray and Logan Allen threw up zeroes for the first three innings as another pitcher’s duel broke out. The Indians started the scoring in the fourth as Amed Rosario led-off with a walk. Jose Ramirez reached on an infield single and Josh Naylor hit a grounder to third base that stuck in Jose Miranda’s glove. The ball went around the infield and Amed Rosario ended up scoring on the play. Josh Bell followed with a run-scoring single to left to double the Indians lead. Cleveland eventually loaded the bases and walked Myles Straw to plate a run. The Indians had a three-run lead after four innings of play. The Twins got back in the game in the sixth as Jose Miranda lined a one-out single to right. Max Kepler followed and crushed a Logan Allen fastball out to right for a two-run homer. The Twins pulled within a run and kept inching closer in the seventh. Carlos Correa drilled a Trevor Stephan fastball out to left for a solo homer, which tied the game at three. The Indians answered in the bottom of the seventh when Steven Kwan knocked a Jorge Alcala fastball out to center for a solo blast. This put Cleveland up 4-3 after seven innings of play. Sam Hentges put up a zero in the eighth and Emmanuel Clase had a 1-2-3 ninth to close the door. The Indians evened the series up at a game apiece with a quality win tonight.
-Final Thoughts- Sonny Gray had one bad inning that costed him the game. He went five innings and allowed three runs on four hits with six strikeouts and three walks. His defense betrayed him a few times. Jorge Alcala gave up a run over two innings with three strikeouts. Jovani Moran fanned two in the eighth. Jose Miranda led the team with two hits on the night. The Twins hit 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position and left seven men on base. The team called up Jorge Alcala and sent Josh Winder back to St. Paul, so he can pitch more. The initial plan was a long man role, but most of the games have been close, so he hasn’t been needed. Tomorrow, Joe Ryan faces Cal Quantrill in the series finale.

Indians Take Care Of Twins 11-4.
Twins 4 Indians 11 W-Quantrill (13-5) L-Gray (8-5) SV-Hentges (1)
The Minnesota Twins finished out their frustrating season series against the Indians today. They tried to inch a little closer this afternoon in Cleveland. The Indians were ready from the start as Steven Kwan led-off the first with a single to left. Jose Ramirez lined a single to right and Josh Naylor unloaded on a Sonny Gray curveball. The ball was deposited deep into right field for a three-run homer. The Tribe had a three-run lead after an inning of play. Cleveland got back to work in the second with a Myles Straw two-out walk. He gained two bases on a bad pickoff throw from Sonny Gray. Steven Kwan tripled him home and the Tribe extended their lead to four after two frames. The Twins finally solved Cal Quantrill in the fourth with a Carlos Correa lead-off single to right. Jose Miranda doubled to right and they were in business. Nick Gordon reached on an infield single, which plated Correa. Gio Urshela hit into a fieder’s choice to pull the Twins within a pair of runs. The Twins kept battling when Nick Gordon crushed a Cal Quantrill fastball out to right-center for a solo homer. Minnesota was within a run and made things interesting. The Indians would respond in the sixth with a Myles Straw triple. Steven Kwan walked and Amed Rosario belted a Ronny Henriquez fastball. He sent it over the high left field wall for a three-run homer to give the Indians a 7-3. The Twins got a run back in the seventh as Luis Arraez was hit by a pitch and Carlos Correa dumped a single to right. Jose Miranda hit into a double play, but a run scored to pull Minnesota within three. Luke Maile responded when he smoked a Jorge Lopez slider out to left for a solo homer. Myles Straw followed with a walk and Amed Rosario lined a base hit to center. The two runners moved up on a double steal and Jose Ramirez hit an RBI single to right. A run scored on a wild pitch and Andres Gimenez singled home one more to put this game out of reach. Cleveland had a seven-run lead heading into the ninth inning. Sam Hentges finished off a seven-out save and the Indians took four of five games from the Twins this weekend.
-Final Thoughts- Sonny Gray got knocked around a bit then left with a hamstring injury. He lasted two innings and gave up four runs on five hits with a walk and a strikeout. Ronny Henriquez looked decent in his Major League debut. He went four innings and allowed three runs on four hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Emilio Pagan struck out one in a scoreless seventh. Jorge Lopez was awful and allowed four runs in 2/3 of an inning. Jermain Palacios got the last out of the eighth. Carlos Correa, Nick Gordon, and Gilberto Celestino had two hits each. The Twins hit 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position and left six men on base. After the game, the Twins head to Kansas City for a three-game series. Dylan Bundy will face Zack Greinke in the opener tomorrow night.

Indians Sweep Twins...
Indians 4 Twins 1 W-Bieber (10-8) L-Winder (4-4) SV-Karinchak (2)
Injuries and poor play are finally catching up to the Twins, who are falling more and more out of the American League Central race by the day. A pitcher’s duel broke out on a gorgeous day at Target Field. The Indians would strike first in the second inning. Andres Gimenez blasted a Josh Winder fastball out to right for a solo homer. In the third, Steven Kwan hammered a Winder fastball out to right for a solo blast of his own. The two solo homers put the Indians up by a pair of runs after three innings of play. The Twins solved Shane Bieber a bit in the fifth. Nick Gordon led-off with a double to right and reached third on a groundball. Gary Sanchez hit a grounder that went off the third base bag for a single and scored Gordon. The Twins got within a run midway through the game. Meanwhile, Shane Bieber was dominant through 6 1/3 solid innings. Sam Hentges got out of a jam to finish off the seventh and got the first out of the eighth. Trevor Stephen got the Tribe off the field in the eighth and the bats got back to work. Myles Straw led-off the ninth when Jorge Lopez couldn’t handle a comebacker for a single. Steven Kwan singled to right and Amed Rosario grounded out. Jose Ramirez was intentionally walked to load up the bases. Josh Naylor delivered a two-run double to right to put Cleveland up by three runs. James Karinchak walked two to start the ninth then struck out the next two batters to end the game. The Indians swept the Twins and might have put their playoff hopes to rest this weekend.
-Final Thoughts- Josh Winder did okay in a spot start. He went four innings and allowed two runs on four hits with a walk and four strikeouts. He would have went deeper, but the good bullpen arms hadn’t been used since Wednesday and there’s an off day tomorrow. Caleb Thielbar threw a scoreless inning, Griffin Jax struck out one in a 1-2-3 sixth, and Micahel Fulmer got the first two outs of the seventh. Jhoan Duran got out of that jam and struck out the side in the eighth. Jorge Lopez had a rough ninth, where he gave up two runs on three hits with two walks. Nick Gordon had two hits to lead the team. The Twins hit 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position and left seven men on base. Max Kepler left the game after fouling a ball off his foot in the second. The Twins get a much needed off day tomorrow. The Royals just threw Brady Singer, who shutout the Tigers on Sunday. Kris Bubic will face Joe Ryan in the series opener on Tuesday night.

Indians Stun Twins In 9th.
Indians 11 Twins 10 W-Hentges (1-0) L-Jax (4-2)
The Cleveland Indians finally caught the Minnesota Twins for first place in the American League Central last night. They looked to take sole possession of first tonight with a win over the Twins at Target Field. The Twins got off to a good start when Carlos Correa smacked a Triston McKenzie slider out to left for a solo homer in the first inning. This put Minnesota up by a run after an inning of play. Gio Urshela ignited a second inning rally with a one-out single. Trevor Larnach followed with a base hit and Ryan Jeffers hit a run-scoring double to left to double the Twins lead. The Indians came right back in the third as Myles Straw doubled and Steven Kwan tripled him in to pull Cleveland within a run. Carlos Correa got that run back when he belted a Triston McKenzie fastball out to center for his second homer of the game. The Twins had a two-run lead again and got back to work in the fourth. Gio Urshela started another rally with a lead-off triple and Ryan Jeffers knocked him in with a single. Nick Gordon singled and Luis Arraez hit a sac fly to left. The Twins had a 5-1 lead, but Sonny Gray hit the wall in the fifth. Austin Hedges led-off and hammered a Sonny Gray fastball out to left for a solo blast. Myle Straw and Steven Kwan followed with singles. Amed Rosario reached on an infield single that scored a run and a balk plated another one. Cleveland got within a run halfway through the game. Max Kepler padded the Twins lead when he took Triston McKenzie deep. The solo homer put the Twins up 6-4 after five frames. The Indians would not give in and kept rallying in the seventh. Amed Rosario smoked a Jharel Cotton slider out to left for a solo homer and the Tribe was within a run. Jose Ramirez was hit in the hand by a pitch and Oscar Gonzalez got just enough of a Cotton slider to send it out to left for a two-run homer. The Indians had a 7-6 lead, which didn’t last long. Max Kepler kept the seventh inning alive with a two-out walk and Gary Sanchez lined a single to right. Alex Kirilloff rolled a single over to elft, which scored the game-tying run. The next batter, Gio Urshela hammered an Anthony Castro fastball out to left for a three-run homer to put the Twins up 10-7 after seven innings of play. Emilio Pagan struck out the side in the eighth and things got dicey in the ninth as the first two batters reached. Josh Naylor doubled home a run and Cleveland was within a pair of runs. Oscar Gonzalez plated a pair with a bloop single to left and the game was tied at ten in a blink of an eye. Andres Gimenez bunted him over to third base and Owen Miller hit a sacrifice fly to left to put the Indians up 11-10. Emmanuel Clase had a 1-2-3 ninth and the Indians stunned the Twins for the second straight night.
-Final Thoughts- Sonny Gray was sailing through four innings then hit a wall in the fifth. He went four-plus innings and allowed four runs on eight hits with four strikeouts. Caleb Thielbar got four big outs with two strikeouts. Joe Smith got out of the sixth, and Jharel Cotton gave up three runs in the seventh. Emilio Pagan blew fastballs past hitters to strikeout the side in the eighth and was awful in the ninth. He gave up three runs and Griffin Jax gave up the go-ahead run in the ninth. Gio Urshela led the way with three hits on the night. Carlos Correa and Ryan Jeffers had two hits each. The Twins hit 4-for-7 with runners in scoring position and left three men on base. Jorge Alcala and Randy Dobnak are resuming a throwing program. Josh Winder threw four innings for the Saints in a rehab start. Tomorrow, Zach Plesac faces Devin Smeltzer in the series finale as the Indians go for the sweep.
