I had a difficult time bring the list to just ten books, so this year it’s eleven. This year held a lot of difficult moment for me, and I wanted this list to feature the books that brought me comfort and made me forget the difficult…

Midnight Pals: The Hell Candidate

Masterton: if satan was president of the US, he could do all sorts of evil things! Masterton: could you imagine? the very engine of government, turned toward evil! Masterton: why, it might commit genocide or institute slavery! King: wow, scary stuff! King: glad this is only a story

Masterton: imagine a world where the prince of darkness himself runs to be president of the united states King: i don't have to imagine it! King: I lived under DONALD DRUMPF!

King: eh? eh? King: see, the joke is that drumpf sounds like- Dan Simmons: JEEZ steve why'd you have to go and make it POLITICAL

Masterton: so the devil himself runs for president Masterton: and you what would happen if satan became president? Masterton: why, he'd probably pass all sorts of crazy laws!

Masterton: like he could make it illegal to pet dogs! Dean Koontz: no no no! stop it! Koontz: steve make it stop! King: it's ok dean don't worry King: satan couldn't really be president King: he'd never be able to build a working coalition

King: satan could never get the votes to become president Koontz: b-but what if he did??? King: well don't worry about that dean King: even if satan did somehow manage to become president King: he'd still be constrained by checks and balances

Koontz: steve, i can't sleep Koontz: i just keep thinking what if graham's story was real?? Koontz: what if satan could become president? King: well, steve, let me tell you something i told my boy joe when he had that same fear…

King: if that happened we'd just stage an assassination attempt and when the media saw the candidate using a child as a human shield, his whole campaign would collapse Koontz: oh phew! Koontz: thanks steve that makes me feel a lot better :)

i feel like i havent read enough horror novels to give recs bc my only advice is try a book or two from ~5 of the most popular horror authors (imo) and then rip through the author’s entire body of work for whichever is your favorite rinse and repeat until youre out of those 5. Then start reading at random i guess or just die

for the AMA: what compels you most in a fictional character!

rage as a trauma response.

it compels me when a character spits in the face of god. when the response isn't "why did you let all this happen" but "how dare you let this happen." something about the assertion of agency in the wake of un-meaning. something about "there was never a Purpose, the point is what you make of it." this is undoubtedly because i was raised evangelical and continue to struggle with what i believe vs what i want to be true. pero also i think i was denied anger for so long (and even now my reflex when i'm hurt is to divert/repress/hide/sublimate anger) that it's cathartic for SOMEONE to get to be mad at the powers that be.

misogyny means it's usually (white) male characters who get these narrative arcs. this is evident in my blorbos: astarion from bg3, the corinthian from sandman, will graham from hannibal. (my immediate first thought was actually emilio sandoz from the sparrow, very literal autistic brain serving me well here lmao, what does it mean to be god's whore.) but my favorite female and genderqueer characters have this, too. saga anderson from alan wake 2 (LITERALLY tells both the in-game narrative force and the meta "fuck off, i'm done with other people writing my story"). essun from the broken earth trilogy (everyone who says they can't connect to her...i need you to examine yourself for misogynoir). vic from nos4a2. eurydice from hadestown. erica slaughter from something is killing the children. jade from my heart is a chainsaw.

(horror is obviously a huge medium for this...the final girl is a figure of righteous anger, the avenging angel, the woman who mows down the ultimate horror with a baseball bat or a butcher knife and she's right, she's in the right, she's the monster slayer, fuck you fear me.)

Broke Horror Fan presents Creepshow: Animated Special & Holiday Special on limited edition, fully functional VHS! Our latest tape goes on sale next Thursday, October 26, at 12pm EST/9am PST via Witter Entertainment.

A Creepshow Animated Special features segments based on short stories by Stephen King and Joe Hill. It's directed by Greg Nicotero (The Walking Dead) and stars Kiefer Sutherland (The Lost Boys) and Joey King (The Conjuring).

A Creepshow Holiday Special is written and directed by Greg Nicotero. Adam Pally (Happy Endings) and Anna Camp (True Blood) star, with a special appearance by Lil Yachty.

The two episodes arrive on VHS together with two variants: a standard slipcase and a book box edition with a flip-open cover and a yellow tape (limited to 100). Both versions feature artwork by Graham Humphreys and Devon Whitehead.

For optimal VHS viewing, the episodes have been cropped from their original aspect ratio to 4:3 full frame. It is officially licensed from RLJE Films and Shudder.

Two animated tales of terror: “Survivor Type,” based on the short story by Stephen King and adapted by Greg Nicotero, stars Kiefer Sutherland as a man determined to stay alive alone on a deserted island no matter what the cost. “Twittering from the Circus of the Dead,” based on the short story by Joe Hill and adapted by Melanie Dale, stars Joey King as a teen whose family road trip includes a visit to the gravest show on earth.

In the holiday-themed "Shapeshifters Anonymous," fearing he is a murderer, an anxious man searches for answers for his "unique condition" from an unusual support group. Starring Anna Camp and Adam Pally, the special is written and directed by Creepshow showrunner Greg Nicotero, based on a short story by J.A. Konrath.

Jones: so one day she thinks she might be in the middle of her own slasher movie Jones: and she thinks oh shit this rules Jones: people are just gonna get murdered left and right Jones: this fucking rocks

King: so why’s she think she’s in a slasher movie? is there a killer on the loose? Jones: oh it’s cuz this hot virginal girl moves into town King: King: wait so not because anyone gets murdered? Jones: no just cuz this hot girl moves in Jones: i mean that’s usually the first indication that a slasher is around right? King: to be honest, it’s not usually the first thing I’d think of Poe: yeah that could indicate a lot of different things

Jones: so this hot but very pure girl moves into town King: and somehow that makes the slasher-obsessed girl think that she’s in a slasher movie come to life? King: but why would tha- Joss Whedon: [shrieking] SHE’S THE FINAL GIRL!!! Whedon: LET ME TELL THE STORY! Whedon: I KNOW ALL THE TROPES!

Jones: see, this girl knows the rules of a slasher movie Jones: so she knows how to- Joss Whedon: OH! OH!!! Whedon: OH!!!!!! Whedon: PICK ME!! PICK ME!! I have thoughts on this!! Jones: there’s a summer camp that was once the site of a slasher-type massacre. It was on the other side of the lake, up the road with the gas station, you know, the one  old man McGee ran? He used to sell sodas in cans, not with the pop tops. With the pull tabs. They don’t make those anymore, you can’t even get them. King: so about that massacre Jones: this is what we call local color

Jones: so i had to take the ferry over to terra nova. so i tied an onion to my belt, as was the style at the time. we didn’t have white onions on account of the war Koontz: [crying] when are we gonna get to the massacre

When you start to hyperfixate on something with a really small fan base and little to no new content, leaving you with that sort of restless kinetic energy feeling until you find something new that gives you the same dopamine rush<<<<
