Before officially meeting, do you think Matthew and Diana ever just casually passed each other while on campus? Cause I'm imagining Gallowglass watching from an undetectable distance, seeing Diana cross a courtyard, going in the opposite direction of Matthew and Gallowglass is just simultaneously panicking and relieved.
Gallowglass: Oh my God, it's happening! They're going to finally meet! After centuries of waiting and decades of watching, Diana will finally be- Wait! Why is she walking away? Auntie! Turn back right now! Matthew! Turn around and go meet your wife!
They both continue on their way, completely oblivious to who they just walked past.
Gallowglass, unable to decide if this was a good or bad thing: Ok, they didn't meet this time. So, I don't have to leave her yet. But it'll be sooner rather than later now. At least she'll be happy when they do meet...
#I'm really conflicted about the potential Gallowglass book cause we'll get so much more insight but the poor guy is really going to suffer#a discovery of witches#shadow of night#the book of life#diana bishop#matthew de clermont#gallowglass#deborah harkness#all souls trilogy

THIS IS NOT A DRILL
"A Discovery of Witches" is now available to stream on Netflix (geolocation limited)! (and on Sky TV in the UK)
It's one of my all-time favourite book-to-series ("All Souls Trilogy" by Deborah Harkness) productions - obvi co-starring Alex Kingston, as a witchy, sassy (hello, sweetie!), LGBT Auntie - and the entire series is just perfect?! Time travel, witches, vampires, werewolves, unrequited love, broken hearts, baddies, fab CGI, beautiful cast, great story...what more could you ask for?
CAST (some Doctor Who vets): Matthew Goode, Teresa Palmer, Alex Kingston, Lindsay Duncan (😍), Sophia Myles, Louise Brealey, James Purefoy (😍), Tom Hughes, Valerie Pettiford, Alysha Heart, Trevor Eve, Owen Teale, Paul Rhys...and on and on!
The first season was released in 2018 but there are 3 seasons altogether and it's absolutely worth the watch.
I'm on my fifth watch 🤓 since its initial release. So good!
Share your thoughts on the series by replying to this post, if you've watched/will watch the series.

Shadow of Night Read Along 2024 Ch21
"Diana is indeed a weaver.’ Goody Alsop’s words reverberated in the room, potent as any spell...
‘Diana is a maker of spells,’ Goody Alsop said. ‘We weavers are rare creatures. That is why the goddess sent you to me.’
‘I’ve never heard of a weaver,’ Matthew said carefully.
‘Few have. We are a secret, Master Roydon, one that few witches discover, let alone wearhs. You are familiar with secrets and how to keep them, I think.’ Her eyes twinkled with mischief.
‘I’ve lived many years, Goody Alsop. I find it hard to believe that witches could keep the existence of weavers from other creatures all that time.’ He scowled. ‘Is this another of Hubbard’s games?’
‘I am too old for games, Monsieur de Clermont. Oh, yes, I know who you really are and what position you occupy in our world,’ Goody Alsop said when Matthew looked surprised. ‘Perhaps you cannot hide the truth from witches as well as you think.’
‘Perhaps not,’ Matthew purred in warning. His growling further amused the old woman."
Diana's nature is revealed. Matthew is worried & throwing his cranky weight around, scowling and growling (🔥🔥🔥). Goody knows how to handle him ("Sit down, Master Roydon. My old bones no longer bend that way." 🤣🤣).

Any 'All Souls' /'A Discovery of Witches' fans on my dash? The series is one of my major hyperfixations besides IWTV and I'm currently reading the 5th book in the series that dropped 2 days ago - The Black Bird Oracle.
It's sooooooooo good 😍🙌💕

The smell of the library always lifted my spirits - that peculiar combination of old stone, dust, woodworm, and paper made properly from rags.

books I’ve read in 2024 📖 no. 086
The Black Bird Oracle by Deborah Harkness
“Home, the susurration of chestnut leaves said. Home, the bees buzzed. Home, a raven called from its perch on the ridge of the roof. Home, my heart echoed. I belonged to this place where I’d never been, and a sense of rightness settled over me as Ravenswood exerted its pull, like the moon on the tides.”

⬆️ Fan Photo Collage using extract from A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness and stills from the TV Show
My favourite book in the whole world. Ever.
I was out and about yesterday and found a well-loved copy of ‘A Discovery of Witches’ in the local train station book swap.
⬆️ A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness (p175)
Part of me wanted to leave it for someone else to discover the absolute magic (literal and figurative) of it; part of me was delighted with the connective sign from the universe and part of me grabbed it with both hands as I’ve lent my copy out and am really missing it. I delved into it straight away and got wonderfully lost for the entire train journey.
To celebrate, I edited together a little extract (p175), just for fun, which tries to capture the delectable sensory overload to be found in the writing and the show itself. Can’t really put into words how much I love it.

Can you imagine the stress Philippe was under whenever this came up?
Ysabeau: Do you think Matthew may mate with Juliette? I may not like her, but I would accept it if it would make him happy...
Philippe: I am certain he won't mate with her.
Philippe, internally: She's not Diana!
Ysabeau, a few decades later: Matthew is curious as to why he and Juliette have still not mated. I told him that if he were meant to mate with her, it would have happened long ago.
Philippe: Yes, it would have. Perhaps they should accept that and part ways.
Philippe, internally: Diana, where are you? My son is being an idiot and needs you to set him straight!
Ysabeau, a few more decades later: We've a letter from Matthew. He and Juliette are...
Philippe, taking out a piece of paper and a pen: Gallowglass, please tell me you've found some sign of my daughter!

Shadow of Night Read Along Ch1
"‘All we need is Sir Walter Raleigh and we’ll have the entire School of Night in the house.’ Matthew looked out the window at my mention of this legendary group of radicals, philosophers, and free-thinkers. Thomas Harriot. Christopher Marlowe. George Chapman. Walter Raleigh. And— ‘Just who are you, Matthew?’ I hadn’t thought to ask him before we departed. ‘Matthew Roydon,’ he said with a tip of his head, as though we were only this moment being introduced. ‘Friend to poets.’ ‘Historians know almost nothing about you,’ I said, stunned. Matthew Roydon was the most shadowy figure associated with the mysterious School of Night. ‘You aren’t surprised, are you, now that you know who Matthew Roydon really is?’ His black brow rose. ‘Oh, I’m surprised enough to last a lifetime. You might have warned me before dropping me into the middle of all this.’"
What a dark horse Matthew is 🤭 Diana is not at the end of her surprises, she better buckle up, it's going to be quite the ride!
An old painting of the mysterious Matthew Roydon...
