STAR chapter 14; Adam, the Hunter

~ Star is a Hybrid raised by Brown Wolves deep in the rainforests of 30th Century Earth, a time when cities stretch ever upward instead of outward in an attempt to preserve what remains of the planet's wilderness, which, when left to reclaim what humanity took from it, has become a virtual labyrinth of dangerous fauna and even deadlier flora, working to take their revenge on the concrete and metal and plastic that once brought them all to the edge of extinction.

The elder wolves often speak of the time before the Silence, when the cities finally stopped expanding and began the climb to the sky instead, and these stories leave Star and their wolf-sister, Storm, unable to sleep for days at a time. Neither of them ever want to venture close to the human settlements, but what Star doesn't know is that leaving the rainforest could be the very thing that saves them and their friends.

In the city, Celeste is the daughter of an illegal animal hunter, who has his sights set on the nearby wolf pack, and the strange human-like creature that seems to be living with them.

The rainforest isn't safe anymore. The humans are venturing beyond their cities to cause destruction once more. And Star needs to know who they can trust and who they can't in a world they've only just begun to understand.

Chapter description: Dr. Forsythia is only mildly enraged at the loss of his newest potential test subject, but when her father shows up saying he is going into the rainforest to search for her and bring her back… he is presented with the perfect opportunity to renew his dreams of experimenting on a Hybrid.

the fact that i'm no longer the same age as the protagonists of novels and films i once connected to is so heartbreaking. there was a time when I looked forward to turning their age. i did. and i also outgrew them. i continue to age, but they don't; never will. the immortality of fiction is beautiful, but cruel.
