Tale As Old As Time

It's not surprising, frankly, that people assume Impulse is the Vex and Skizz is the Allay.

The pair of them present very clearly- a competent and somewhat egotistic redstoner and an overly enthusiastic goofball all-rounder. Impulse is methodical, Skizz is chaotic; Impulse keeps to himself and Skizz is the life of any party.

Their skins aren't much of a help, either, since they both look fully human. When asked about it, they're evasive; Impulse only ever says, "It was more convenient," and Skizz just laughs and changes the subject.

The two of them live together in what was a woodland mansion. There aren't any other occupants anymore.

What happened to them?

Well.

Imp and Skizz happened to them.

It had been Joe Hills who found the two, when the mapping of the new world began. He'd tripped over their doorstep and met Skizz first, coming in for the evening with a load of freshly mined ore. He'd been offered shelter and accepted.

After a few meetings with other Hermits adventurous enough to make the trek, and then a nether portal build, the two were welcomed into the fold. This is Impulse and this is Skizz. They live in the mansion.

Gem is the one who figures it out.

Well.

Gem is the one the pillagers lock on to when she's camping at the mansion for a couple days, helping Skizz set up a tunnel from their nether portal to the underground lake she wants to terraform.

So she is the one who sees Skizz charge through the blocks of basalt they had stacked chest high, phasing through the rock like he wasn't anything at all, one hand filling with or maybe becoming iron? Whatever happens, it is long and sharp and coldly bright.

The pillager who was closest to her never stood a chance.

The others run, or try to.

They don't make it very far.

When Skizz returns to her, his hands are bloody. She reaches out and gently touches his shoulder, watching his eyes leak from red to purple and then back to that brilliant blue.

"You okay, Gemmy bemmy?" he asks. Soft, cautious.

She summons her brightest smile as she replies, "I'm fine."

That evening, when they come back inside, Impulse is waiting. He doesn't say much, just gets them set down for dinner and when he sits beside Skizz he makes a noise.

A soft, tinkling, high noise, one that a human throat shouldn't be able to make.

Skizz drops his head onto Impulse's shoulder, and Impulse embraces him in a half-hug for a second.

Gem says nothing.

After dinner, in the enchanting room (where the comfiest couches are) Impulse sets up a jukebox. Gem watches in fascination as he loads a music disk, as Skizz comes up to him.

The moment the music starts, a change comes over them both. They dance together, steadily rising from the floor until they are at least two or three blocks up, moving in perfect swirls and arcs around one another. Impulse begins to glow and spark with blue light, and then he makes that chiming sound again.

This time there is a rhythm to it.

Singing, Gem realizes. He is singing.

And then Skizz joins him. His- voice?- isn't as fine, it has a lower more menacing quality, but paired with Impulse's, it makes beautiful music.

When the song finishes the two men float delicately back down to the floor, and Impulse says, "Better?"

"Better," Skizz says.

"Tell you what," Gem says, gratified that neither of them jump, which means they knew she was there, and they let her see, and they trust her. "Next time I'll bring my guitar."

Skizz smiles. "We'd like that, Gemmy," he says.

"I know," Gem replies. "I will, too."
