Tales Of Kenzera: Zau Developer Surgent Studios Announces Layoffs
New Post has been published on https://thedigitalinsider.com/tales-of-kenzera-zau-developer-surgent-studios-announces-layoffs/
Tales Of Kenzera: Zau Developer Surgent Studios Announces Layoffs
Surgent Studios, the developer behind Tales of Kenzera: Zau, has announced it is laying off just over a dozen employees. This follows the release of its first game, Tales of Kenzera: Zau, back in April, which launched to good reviews.
Surgent doesn’t explain why; it says it’s focusing on supporting those affected, continuing work on Tales of Kenzera: Zau, and looking ahead to future projects.
Here’s the studio’s statement, in full:
“Unfortunately, Surgent has joined the growing number of games studios impacted by layoffs this year with just over a dozen people affected. It’s a difficult time in the games industry, but we remain incredibly proud of our entire team’s work on Zau, and of the praise it has received from critics and players alike. Our focus now is on supporting those affected, continuing our work on Zau, and looking to the future with our next creative projects.”
Studio head and founder Abubakar Salim, who also voiced the titular Zau in the team’s first game, released his own statement addressing the layoffs:
“Thank you so much to those who have checked in. This hurts deeply. This isn’t the news I wanted to share today. I am so proud of what that team have achieved over the course of these 4 years. When things got tough, every one of them stood so strong, it was inspiring. So to be delivering this news today really sucks. I know we’re not alone here, but that doesn’t make it easier.
“The focus now is to continue supporting those affected in anyway we can. I will be replying to this with links to posts from our affected team members. If you have any opportunities available or know of any going, please consider these incredible talented people.”
Surgent Studios grows an unfortunately ever-growing list of studios affected by layoffs in 2024.
Last month, Paradox Interactive closed its Paradox Tectonic Studio the same week it canceled its first game, Life by You. Earlier that month, Dead by Daylight developer Behaviour Interactive laid off 95 employees. Fae Farm and Dauntless developer Phoenix Labs laid off the majority of its staff and canceled its in-development games back in May, and that same week, Square Enix announced it will begin layoffs as part of “structural reforms.”
In May, Xbox closed four Bethesda studios, including Hi-Fi Rush developer Tango Gameworks and Redfall studio Arkane Austin. Take-Two Interactive closed Rollerdrome studio Roll7 and Kerbal Space Program 2 studio Intercept Games alongside major layoffs to its indie-publisher Private Division label. That same week, we learned Deliver Us Mars developer Keoken Interactive had laid off nearly its entire staff.
Elsewhere in the year, EA laid off roughly 670 employees across all departments, resulting in the cancellation of Respawn’s Star Wars FPS game. PlayStation laid off 900 employees across Insomniac, Naughty Dog, Guerrilla, and more, closing down London Studio in the process, too. The day before, Until Dawn developer Supermassive Games announced it laid off 90 employees.
At the end of January, we learned Embracer Group had canceled a new Deus Ex game in development at Eidos-Montréal and laid off 97 employees in the process. Also in January, Destroy All Humans remake developer Black Forest Games reportedly laid off 50 employees and Microsoft announced it was laying off 1,900 employees across its Xbox, Activision Blizzard, and ZeniMax teams, as well. Outriders studio People Can Fly laid off more than 30 employees in January, and League of Legends company Riot Games laid off 530 employees.
Lords of the Fallen Publisher CI Games laid off 10 percent of its staff, Unity will lay off 1,800 people by the end of March, and Twitch laid off 500 employees.
We also learned that Discord had laid off 170 employees, that layoffs happened at PTW, a support studio that’s worked with companies like Blizzard and Capcom, and that SteamWorld Build company, Thunderful Group, let go of roughly 100 people. Dead by Daylight developer Behaviour Interactive also reportedly laid off 45 people, too.
The hearts of the Game Informer staff are with everyone who’s been affected by layoffs or closures.

War of Shadow Realm ~ Origins of the Ink Demon Part 10 ~
"During the Black Arms Invasion - 6 Years ago"
Shadow (in his super form) : Only one thing left to do.
[The Messiah - Yutaka Minobe]
Black Doom : Shadow, what are you doing?
Shadow (in his super form) : Now to put the past behind me. Chaos...CONTROL!
(teleports the Black Comet outside of earth, where it becomes ARK's target)
Black Doom : Shadow! Don't do this to me! I'm the only relative that you've ever got! You wouldn't do this to your own father, would you?
*DBZ SFX : ENERGY POWERING UP*
Black Doom : No, shadow! Shadow, please! No, Shadow, no! No, no...NOOOOOOOOOO!
*DBZ SFX : ENERGY BLAST*
*DBZ SFX : LOUD EXPLOSION*
"6 years later..."
Shadow : So with Black Doom, being only the relative in the family, fueling his hatred against Mobius, The Death God Grim manage take his soul away and sent him to the inferno, just to believe that the villains in our universe were always full of stubbornness since the ancients arrived on the planet. But with the Black Arms Invasion coming to an end, who's responsible for this madness that harmed Mobius to fuel the hatred between humans and Mobians, and even intergalactic beings?
Sonic : You alright there, Shadow? What's bugging ya?
Shadow : Oh, nothing bothers me. I was thinking about the incident since the Black Arms invasion. That "other" incident.
Sonic : What? You talking about the Gizoid incident back in 2003? That incident was Eggman using Emerl to put Mobius in danger after his weapon on the death egg was destroyed. But I now remember that I realized he was reincarnated into that Gizoid back in 2004. It hasn't been like this since the Dreamcast era ended in 5 years.
Tails : Hardly to tell you guys, now you thinking about these incidents we're starting to kicking it up a notch. But in the real world AU, the Space Colony ARK is in really hot water right now, when this declaration of war is going to destroy the world, but we do know is that the Real World AU is being collided with the Ohkuboverse and it could really rip through the fabric of space time. However, that's only a facade.
Knuckles : A facade? Heh, what is this, Neo Contra from 2004? All I'm saying that this Soul Eater nonsense is blowing everyone's mind since their show had failed due to the unknown circumstances at Square Enix. We don't know what was Japan thinking that not all Japanese animation we're failures, but the studio did a pretty good job on the reboot of Fullmetal Alchemist. In fact, I got the voice of that Flame Alchemist Colonel Roy Mustang. What new voice did you get?
Sonic : I got Roger Craig Smith, that did Batman and Chris Redfield from Resident Evil.
Knuckles : Well, I guess Egghead still have his voice since 4kids had him dropping the balls of being the Mike Pollock guy. No wonder his old voice sadly passed on since he voiced in one of those games in the old days.
Sonic : Way to hang it. It's been like this since the Olympic Games with Mario to defeat our respective foes to save Canada and London. I wonder what's he up to now? (Mario appears on the screen)
Mario : Good evening, Sonic. How is my rival/smash fighter friend doing on stopping the conflict?
Sonic : Oh, hey, Mario. Yeah, yeah, there's a war going on. What's the sitch? How's everything going on in the war zone?
[Tense - Kenichi Tokoi]
Mario : Not to worry. You see we had a problem back at Nintendo in 2009. But since you made the agreement of becoming a Smash Fighter along with Snake, we decided to give you information on that Square Enix representative. This Maka Albarn we interrogated with, isn't appeared what she used to be. Turns out that she was actually a disguised form of someone that looks alike her. (Shows a photo of Bendy and his lover Inky Albarn in a black dress)
Sonic : Who is that?
Mario : This one on the left is cartoon legend Bendy the ink demon, and over on the way right here is his ex-lover, Inky Albarn, or should I say the Demon Queen of his world!
Sonic : So, the protagonist of Soul Eater is...(flashing images of Inky wreaking havoc and attacking people)
Tails : A fake! So the protagonist of Soul Eater was actually the queen in disguise? How did you know she was Bendy's former love?
Mario: Because the bratty teenagers from Soul World were bamboozled by this imposter who was trying to conquer the real world in inky darkness and enslave all of mankind. But poor, poor, old Bendy and friends could not take his lover's evil ways anymore. So to put a stop to the queen's reign of terror, he helped the technicolored toons Cuphead and his companion Mugman to defeat her instantly and therefore imprisoning her underneath the studio that is responsible for the creation of Bendy's world and was remained sealed away. Until now...
Sonic: So, a couple of colored toons managed to defeat her and eventually saved the world of toons and the real world itself. So what happened after her himprisonment?
Mario : However, not all things were going great in Real World AU. So, since her defeat, the queen discovered that a man named Atsushi Ohkubo wanted a new Japanese manga after Shotaro the Dokeshi's tale has mysteriously reached his end and named the title Soul Eater, a title that he got it from the weapon wielded by PSO NPC Kireek.
Sonic : That's not how it happened, you know what really after her defeat, Inky Albarn had stood underneath the Studio of Bendy's World for a long time, but before the 21st century hits, the queen had an idea of getting the perfect disguise, by becoming the hero of Soul World as we all know it!
Shadow : And not to mention it, the queen had framed the "real" Maka Albarn in her demon form to cause the incident that took place back in the 2000s. But to prove her innocence, Grim the mobian death God had no choice but to help her out and set out on a request to find the queen to put up her wicked ways against humanity!
Sonic : I gotta agree with it to you, Shadow. It's much more than that to stop a demon's reign of terror that could easily destroy the world, the real world.
Mario : So, do you agree with terms of using the powers of the Chaos Emeralds? And I will offer you a smash ball if you don't mind.
Sonic : So much for shadow of being a stuck up assist trophy. And I only have one arrangement song for Angel Island that Senoue always forget, but you're absolutely right about that, we'll use the power of the emeralds and take down the queen itself!
[SA2 (ver.B+C) - Jun Senoue]
Tails : Meet us there!
Sonic : Come on guys, we got some baddies to take down, stopping their reign of terror, and kicking their butts!
Knuckles : It's only a matter of time before Neo Metal Sonic plans to take over the real world, we don't have much time left before the planet is done for! Then I'm right with you guys!
Silver : Don't forget about me!
Sonic : Silver, you're going with us too?
Silver : Look, back in rivals, I just wanted to apologize how harsh I was back then, and I had to help you defeating Solaris, that turns out to be a science experiment that went out of control.
Knuckles: Hey, remembered Espio helped you out on defeating the ifrit? That monster released by Eggman Nega was it? Grim manage to help you and Epsio to track down that nasty descendant of his, who knew capturing Chao to feed the Ifrit was about committing Chao genocide? That Eggman Nega fella sure knows his place.
Sonic : Mario, you got yourself a deal. We'll put an end to this conflict once and for all! Just leave the world to the fastest hedgehog there is!
Shadow : Well then, LET'S GET MOVING!

🎮 Where's My Controller?
I've been trying to get my hands on Pokemon Scarlet & Violet, but my usual physical game importers have seen delays due to weather and customs issues. I have since returned to Pokemon Brilliant Diamond in an attempt to catch a Totodile.
I tried out Evil West, and while it was a fantastic feeling game with solid battle mechanics, I ultimately could not stand the horror aesthetic. But it receives recommendations from me.
A message to you all
Today's newsletter is the 52nd since I started the Void0 Weekly Digest. It has been quite challenging at times. I severely underestimated the amount of work required to create a weekly newsletter. I must admit, though, this probably has been one of the few things I've truly stuck with. I want to take this opportunity to thank all of you who have gone out of your way for the past year to read this newsletter every week. I am grateful for your continued patronage.
Over this past year, I've only created three new videos for the YouTube channel. It took me almost a year to write and then make the video review for Blue Reflection (Article/Video). Obviously, this wasn't the intention. I still have my Yakuza 0 video that I've been editing and editing. Yakuza 0 was a much more involved experience for me personally. As a result, I've been trying to get all my thoughts and feelings about the game out.
Earlier this year, I wrote my thoughts and ideas for videos and articles. I came up with a few exciting things. These things are still, unfortunately, in the pre-planning/research stage.
Void0Media isn't where I wanted it to be when I started on the 26th of May, 2018. My first video reviewed the indie game "Zero Ranger" (Video). I remember playing that game and thinking to myself, I have to talk about this game. I previously had another YouTube channel that also focused on games, but not in a review capacity. Over the next year, I continued to review Indie games because I felt like indie games did not get the press that many of them deserved. It would be in September 2019 that I would rebrand the YouTube channel as Void0. I would then infrequently upload videos, reviews and the like over the next two years. In January 2021, I began becoming more and more active. At this point, the form of Void0Media you now know began to take shape. That brings us to today.
This is not a goodbye. It would be nice to give some lore to those who have been around for a while. There are things I would like to do for Void0Media in the future. I won't disclose those things here or make grandiose promises. I hope to continue offering you value for your time in the future.
I don't know what is in store for me personally, professionally, for Void0Media, or any other projects I am working on. All I know is that I have to try.
The Void Called, and Thank you to Those Who Have Answered.

Sleeping Dogs
A problem we’re having with massive, big budget games is that they try to cram in too much and create a sort of game design soup. All of these things you like from other things are in here, so you must like it, right? Often, these games fail to make their own sort of identity, and now we’re at a point where many major releases feel like they’re all using the exact same foundation and it’s holding them back. The key seems to be having a unique hook and balancing out all the various mechanics to create a cohesive whole, and that’s not something many can do. It’s odd that United Front Games, the people who brought you *checks notes* ModNation Racers managed to do that in 2012 with Square Enix’s “sleeper” hit (heh) Sleeping Dogs.

Games to get a free PS4 upgrade to PS5:
I talked to you about the idea of Cross Gen games that are issued between two generations and the idea of a free upgrade, which is simply followed by Xbox through the principle of Smart Delivery. As for Sony, it leaves the issue of the current generation games on specially developed copies for the next generation in the form and free upgrade in the hands of the developers, more information about each You can find this dilemma here:
Playstation has announced some games for PS4 that are free for PS5 if you buy them on the current generation, and they are:

The Game Awards 2020 Nominees
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
The Game Awards return in 2020 to celebrate the best titles of the year. The ceremony will take place on Dec. 10 and will be hosted once again by executive producer and presenter Geoff Keighley. Gamers will be able to watch the festivities via live stream.
Due to restrictions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, this year’s ceremony will take place across multiple cities instead of one venue. According to a press release, the event will be streamed live in “4K UHD from studio locations with no in-person audience in Los Angeles, Tokyo and London. The three host cities for The Game Awards will be digitally connected for an innovative celebration with live award presentations, musical performances, and spectacular world premiere game announcements.”
Favorites at this year’s award ceremony include The Last of Us Part II, Hades, Ghost of Tsushima, Half-Life: Alyx, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, and Final Fantasy VII Remake.
“In 2020, video games have connected and comforted us more than ever, and that makes the 2020 edition of The Game Awards our most important show ever,” Keighley said in a statement earlier this year. “Our team is working hard to deliver an innovative and thoughtful program that celebrates excellence, previews the future, and amplifies important voices that are shaping the future of this medium.”
The Game Awards 2020 will also kick off “a weekend of instantly playable game content, in-game drops, demos, and live streams that celebrate the exciting future for video games across PC, console, mobile and mixed reality experiences.”
Fans should expect “Game Award Sales” on various digital marketplaces. It’ll probably be a good time to buy those games you’ve been putting off all year.
BAFTA and Emmy nominated composer Lorne Balfe is returning as the Music Director and conductor of The Game Awards, and will be conducting the world-renowned London Philharmonic Orchestra from London’s famous Abbey Road Studios.
“Being a part of The Game Awards is truly a wonderful experience ,and I’m thrilled to again be celebrating the incredible games of 2020,” said Lorne Balfe in a press release. “There is nothing quite like music in video games and with the phenomenal talents from the London Philharmonic Orchestra, I look forward to bringing the scores from this year’s ground-breaking titles to viewers around the world from the legendary Abbey Road Studios.”
And of course, the ceremony wouldn’t be complete without some HUGE announcements regarding upcoming games. Last year’s event brought us the reveal of the Xbox Series X. How will The Game Awards top that this year? Fans will just have to wait and see!

‘But They’re Covered In Nipples’: The Story Of Destroy All Humans - Quill’s Scribbles
Another E3 has come and gone. There was some good announcements. Square Enix unveiled their Avengers game, Keanu Reeves came on stage to give us the release date of Cyberpunk 2077, Ubisoft are making another Watch Dogs set in London, and... um... what else happened?
Oh yeah!
DESTROY ALL HUMANS IS BACK!!!!!!
Yes, the cult classic Destroy All Humans is returning next year, developed by THQ Nordic and Black Forest Games. This was quite possibly the nicest surprise I’ve ever had. When the teaser trailer came up on my YouTube recommendations, I practically screamed the house down. It’s a level of excitement I felt when 20th Century Fox announced they were finally making a Deadpool movie.
Yeah. That excited.
Destroy All Humans was my favourite video game series growing up. I played the first two games non-stop on my PS2 and I even bought a Nintendo Wii and PS3 just so I could play Big Willy Unleashed and Path Of The Furon (yeah, we’ll get to them). Unfortunately, while the series was reasonably successful, it never quite broke through into the mainstream, and it ended up having a very short lifespan, making it one of the most underrated franchises of all time.
So, to mark the return of Crypto and Pox, I thought I’d take a retrospective look at the series as a whole. Analysing each game in the franchise and talking about what made them so good, whilst also looking at how it faded into obscurity and how THQ Nordic and Black Forest Games can hopefully avoid this fate with their remake.
Radioactive, Exploding, Zombie Cows
The first Destroy All Humans was developed by THQ and Pandemic Studios (the latter probably most famous for making the original Star Wars Battlefront games. You know? The good ones that weren’t overloaded with loot boxes and microtransactions) and was released in 2005 on the PS2 and Xbox. You play as a Furon warrior called Cryptosporidium 137, or Crypto for short, who is tasked with harvesting the brains of humans in order to extract pure Furon DNA from them. His leader Orthopox 13, or Pox, explains that the Furons are at risk of cloning themselves into extinction as they are unable to reproduce naturally due to a lack of genitalia and the DNA in their cloning banks are starting to degrade. Fortunately the Furons visited prehistoric Earth on their way back from destroying the Martians and took the opportunity to ‘let off some steam’ with the natives. As a result, humans possess a strand of Furon DNA that can hopefully restore the Furons’ reproductive organs. Unfortunately a secret government organisation called Majestic (a sort of cross between Project Blue Book and the Men in Black) have caught wind of the Furon invasion due to Crypto 136 crash landing in Roswell 10 years earlier. So Crypto 137 will have to be extra cautious in his quest to take over Earth.
The game was released four years after Grand Theft Auto III, which had completely revolutionised gaming with its open world sandbox. As a result, other companies were attempting their own open worlds and putting their own spin on them. While Destroy All Humans didn’t quite have the same scale as GTA, it made up for it with quality over quantity. The game offered six small open world areas for players to have fun in and its central premise was utterly captivating. After countless games where you had to fight alien invaders, Destroy All Humans allowed you to play as the alien invader.
Pandemic Studios completely embraced the alien invasion premise, giving the player a vast number of weapons and abilities to wreak havoc on planet Earth. You had access to weapons like the Zap O Matic, Disintegrator Ray and Anal Probe (no, really, there’s actually a gun called the Anal Probe and it’s as funny as it sounds) as well as mental abilities such as Psychokinesis, Hypnotism and the Cortex Scan, which allowed you to read the thoughts of humans and was also used to help maintain your Holoblob disguise in stealth missions. And if that isn’t cool enough, you also get your own flying saucer, which you can use to destroy buildings and landmarks. The game gave you a lot of freedom, essentially dropping you in a small destructible playground and telling you to go and enjoy yourself.
But the thing I loved most about the first game was the writing. The plot itself is actually pretty good with plenty of twists and turns as the military and Majestic become more and more desperate to stop you. And the humour, my God the humour! Honestly Destroy All Humans remains to this day one of the funniest games I’ve ever played. It’s use of satirical humour and 50s pop culture references never failed to make me chuckle. There was one moment that I’ll always remember where I scanned the mind of a police officer and it revealed that he was thinking about forming the Village People. If only he could find a cowboy, an Indian and a construction worker.
The game’s main source of comedy mostly came from poking fun at the culture and attitudes of the time period. 1950s America was of course gripped by ‘the Red Scare,’ which the game mocks frequently as we see Majestic and the US government try desperately to cover up alien activity by blaming the death and destruction on communists, to the point where it just gets more and more absurd. At the end of each mission, a newspaper headline is shown, often blaming recent events on freak weather or communist propaganda. Yes, that should explain perfectly why people’s heads are exploding and why the cows are glowing green. It’s all perfectly normal. No aliens here. What’s that? A little green man in a flying saucer is blowing up ice cream trucks? Damn you commies!
The game also pokes fun at 50s sci-fi B movies, often parodying and lampshading the tropes and gimmicks one would expect in a low budget sci-fi flick. For example, the game ends with you fighting a giant robot that houses the President’s brain. It’s fully aware of how ridiculous and stupid it all is and clearly revels in it. Killer robots, mind control, radioactive animals, mad scientists and secret government conspiracies galore. Destroy All Humans is very much a love letter to cheesy sci-fi.
But by far the biggest draw was the main characters. Crypto and Pox. They’re both such funny, wonderfully realised and likeable characters. Pox is voiced by Richard Steven Horvitz, who you may remember from Invader Zim, and he gives the character a maniacal glee. I honestly could listen to his rants all day. He’s the quintessential evil genius. Crypto meanwhile is voiced by J. Grant Albrecht, who gives the character a Jack Nicholson-esque voice. Unlike Pox, Crypto is crass, crude and craves destruction, which often puts him at odds with Pox, who favours more subtle styles of invasion such as mind control. The two characters often bicker and squabble, which never fails to be entertaining, and yet there is an underlying respect and fondness for each other that helps ground the relationship. It’s the perfect double act.
Destroy All Humans was a good game, but does it still hold up? Well there are a few issues. Controls can be a bit clunky at times and missions can often get repetitive. Destroy x number of farmers. Collect x amount of DNA. That kind of thing. Also, annoyingly, there’s no checkpoints, which means if you die or fail the mission, you’re automatically sent back to the Furon Mothership and you have to start the mission all over again. But the writing, humour and entertainment value more than make up for it.
Hot Monkey Love
While the first game wasn’t what you’d call a hit, it was successful enough for THQ to commission a sequel. Destroy All Humans 2 was released in 2006 on PS2 and Xbox, just one year after the first game, and this time Crypto was going international.
Set in the 1960s, ten years after the events of the first game, the KGB in Russia learn about the Furon’s takeover of America and plan a counterattack. They nuke the Furon Mothership, killing Pox, and try to assassinate Crypto 138, who is posing as the President of the United States. The assassination fails and Pox’s mind is able to survive in hologram form. The two then embark on a global adventure, seeking revenge against the KGB and uncovering a massive conspiracy that puts the entire Furon invasion at risk.
Destroy All Humans 2 is an ambitious sequel that increases its scope from the first game. No longer confined to America, we see Crypto terrorise San Francisco, London, Tokyo, Russia and even the Moon. Our arsenal of weapons are also expanded. The original weapons from the first game return as well as some all new ones such as the Disclocator, which fires a purple disc at a human or vehicle and sends them flying around the map, the Burrow Beast, which summons a Tremors-esque space worm to cause carnage, and Meteor Strike, which I think speaks for itself. We also get a few new mental abilities such as Transmogrify, which allows you to turn objects into ammo, and Free Love, which causes everyone in the general vicinity to start dancing, allowing you to make a quick getaway while they’re distracted. The saucer too has some extra features, including a cloaking device and the ability to drain vehicles of health using your Abducto Beam.
This sequel pretty much takes everything that worked from the first game whilst tweaking the things that didn’t. The GTA style Alert system got a complete overhaul. If you want to raise or lower the Alert level, all you have to do is bodysnatch a cop or a soldier and make a call using a police box (you can also make prank calls from them, which is good for a giggle). Holoblobbing has been replaced with Bodysnatching, which works so much better and it does away with the annoying Concentration meter, so you can PK cars and humans to your heart’s content. There’s also a lot more stuff to do now. There are numerous collectables such as Alien Artefacts, which unlocks the Burrow Beast weapon, and FuroTech Cells, which are your main currency that can be used to upgrade your health and weapons. Missions have greater variety than in the first game. There’s a lot more side missions, including Odd Jobs and my personal favourites the Cult of Arkvoodle missions, where Crypto brainwashes humans to worship the Furon God Arkvoodle of the Sacred Crotch.
As you can tell, the humour is still just as wacky and ridiculous as ever. Destroy All Humans 2 lampoons and ridicules the 60s mercilessly, taking aim at the Cold War and the hippie counterculture movement. It also pokes fun at 60s sci-fi films, spy films and Japanese movies like Godzilla. In fact there’s a boss fight that involves you fighting a Godzilla-esque monster and it’s honestly the best boss fight in the series. It regains health by destroying buildings, so you have to destroy them first before you can kill the monster. It’s a great premise.
Story-wise, Destroy All Humans 2 is a worthy successor, raising the stakes and expanding the lore. We’re introduced to the Blisk, the Martians that were presumed extinct by the Furons millions of years ago. It’s a brilliant conflict and ostensibly allows the developers to make commentaries on America and Russia at the time using the Furons and the Blisk respectively as stand-ins. Crypto and Pox are well written, funny and likeable as ever and we’re also introduced to an assortment of new characters, including the Russian spy Natalya and MI6 agent Ponsomby (voiced by none other than Anthony Head from Buffy). The game is engaging and rewarding, but it crucially never takes itself too seriously. For example there’s one instance in Tokyo where Crypto learns about the battle between the White and Black Ninjas and he guesses that the conflict started because of the cliche student betraying his master type origin, but it turns out that both groups of ninjas were originally Grey, but then they ran out of grey fabric and disagreed over which colour they should be instead. There’s so many great comedic moments like that and they pretty much hit bullseyes every time.
That being said, there was one aspect of the game I didn’t like and that was the crude sex jokes. Crypto 138 is the first clone to have pure Furon DNA, which means he now has genitalia. As a result, this new incarnation of Crypto is far more randy than 137 was in the first game. This mostly takes the form of Crypto constantly trying to hit on Natalya, despite her showing no sexual interest, which I personally found pretty gross. Worse still, the game ends with Crypto cloning Natalya and ‘making a few adjustments’ so she will consent to have sex with him. The word ‘creepy’ doesn’t begin to cover how I felt about this. If THQ Nordic and Black Forest Games ever decide to remake the second game, I really hope they consider rethinking that ending because... Jesus!
On the whole, Destroy All Humans 2 was a brilliant sequel. It was also sadly the last Destroy All Humans game to be developed by Pandemic Studios before they were bought by EA and eventually shut down in 2009. Unfortunately this would have a severe impact on the future of the series going forward.
Limp Willy
The next game in the series was a spinoff for the Nintendo Wii, released in early 2008 and developed by Locomotive Games. A PS2 version was also planned, but was scrapped due to budget cuts (remember this. It’ll become relevant later).
Destroy All Humans: Big Willy Unleashed was... underwhelming, to say the least. Set in the 1970s, six years after the second game, Crypto and Pox have opened a fast food restaurant called Big Willy as a way of disposing of the corpses left behind during Crypto’s missions. However a rival fast food chain, run by Colonel Kluckin’, is stealing their business and socialite Patty Wurst is threatening to expose Big Willy (smirk). So it’s up to Crypto to protect Pox’s Big Willy (haha) and maintain their cover on Earth.
Now you’re probably thinking this sounds quite tame compared to the previous two games, and yeah, it is. But it’s a spinoff, so I can understand to a certain extent. However there are a few narrative discrepancies. The big one being Crypto has retired from being the President. No explanation given as to why and we have no idea what Crypto is doing instead. When we first see him, he’s watching TV. He doesn’t even know Big Willy exists until Pox brings it up. So what’s going on exactly? Are they still trying to invade Earth or have they gone native? Also, compared to the grand conspiracy stories of the previous games, Crypto protecting a fast food restaurant sounds a little beneath him.
Gameplay is virtually unchanged from the previous game. There’s some new guns such as Ball Lightning and the Zombie Gun, but nothing special. The biggest addition is Big Willy, the restaurant mascot that’s actually a Furon battle mech in disguise. It’s... fine. Not that much different from the Saucer really. We also get some new locations. Harbor City, Fairfield in Kentucky, Fantasy Atoll (a weak parody of Fantasy Island) and Vietmahl (a painfully obvious homage to Vietnam). None of these locations are particularly interesting however. There’s also a multiplayer mode, which... exists.
Honestly the game as a whole is just lacklustre. The story just isn’t as good as the first two games and the humour doesn’t have the same wit or intelligence. Most of the comedy surrounds the fact that Pox has called his restaurant Big Willy and isn’t entirely aware of the double entendre, which admittedly is funny for the first few missions, but by the time you’ve finished Harbor City and move on to Fairfield, the joke gets old real fast. There’s less of an effort to actually satirise the culture or films of the time, instead merely making 70s pop culture references without ever actually doing anything with it. It’s like the Family Guy school of comedy. Take Fantasy Atoll for instance. A pisstake of Fantasy Island, but instead of Mr. Roarke and Tatoo, we get Mr. Pork and Ratpoo. That’s the level of humour we’re talking about here.
What’s worse is that J. Grant Albrecht and Richard Steven Horwitz don’t return as Crypto and Pox. Sean Donnellan and Darryl Kurylo voice the characters instead and it’s just not the same. It doesn’t feel like Crypto and Pox. So from the very first cutscene, we’re already off on the wrong foot.
And then there’s a bunch of other stuff that I find really questionable. The most obvious being the revelation that Colonel Kluckin’ makes his chicken wings from the corpses of the Vietmahl (Vietnam) war, which just seems in very bad taste to me. If there is a satirical point being made here, I can’t find it for the life of me. There’s also some side missions where Crypto finds out that he and Natalya have a son, which goes absolutely nowhere and doesn’t feel like something that should be in a Destroy All Humans game.
Overall, Big Willy Unleashed was a massive dud meant to tide us over until Destroy All Humans 3 came out later in the year. Honestly the one aspect of it I thought had potential was the side missions involving Crypto and Pox being assessed by a Furon Efficiency Expert called Toxoplasma Gondii. Considering what happened in the second game, including the destruction of the Furon Mothership, the return of the Blisk and the Furon operation on Earth being jeoprodised, this could have been a great premise for a sequel.
Instead what we got was...
Disco Inferno
Oh boy. Where do I begin?
Path Of The Furon was developed by THQ and Sandblast Games and released in December 2008 on the Xbox 360 in North America. The PS3 version was cancelled because Sandblast (and Locomotive Games) was closed down before development was finished due to THQ’s financial problems at the time. However the PS3 version was released in Europe and Australia, so either THQ got another studio to complete it or, more likely, they just released it in a broken, buggy state.
Fans really didn’t like this game, myself included, but before we go tearing it a new one, lets look at the few positives the game has. First off, J. Grant Albrecht and Richard Steven Horwitz return to voice Crypto and Pox, which is great. As a result, the original chemistry is back and they help salvage the game when the writing fails to deliver. There are a few cool new weapons, like the Black Hole Gun and the Venus Human Trap, which creates a giant man eating plant. The Saucer’s weapons have been tweaked, so now they affect the environment as well as destroy buildings. So if you fire your Death Ray at the ground, for example, you can create scorch marks. PK now has its own dedicated button, which means you can pick up and throw objects whilst using your guns simultaneously. There’s also the titular ‘Path Of Enlightenment,’ which upgrades your mental abilities significantly as well as allowing you to freeze time.
That’s the good stuff. The bad stuff is... pretty much everything else.
The humour is, again, quite poor. Rather than satirising 70s culture, the game continues to make references to 70s films like The Godfather and Star Wars, but not actually doing anything with them. Just making the reference. The writing as a whole is quite substandard as the plot pretty much recycles the plots of Destroy All Humans 2 and Big Willy Unleashed, except instead of the Big Willy restaurant, it’s the Space Dust casino and instead of the Blisk, it’s Nexosporidium warriors, who are basically Furon cyborgs. Things do threaten to get a bit interesting when Crypto and Pox discover someone has been manufacturing synthetic Furon DNA, but nothing ever really comes of it. Instead the game focuses mainly on the Master.
Ah yes. The Master.
In an attempt to recapture the magic of the second game, Path Of The Furon tries to spoof kung-fu movies just like how DAH 2 spoofed spy films. Unfortunately this leads us to a slew of unfunny gags, cultural appropriation and some of the worst racial stereotyping I think I’ve ever seen. The Master is a Furon who crashed on Earth a hundred years ago and embroiled himself in Eastern culture, enhancing his PK abilities. This is what he looks like:
YYYYeah.
Oh and if that’s not awkward enough, he also speaks in an over the top ‘ah so’ accent. It’s incredibly cringeworthy and made me want to crawl out of my body and hide in the darkest corner I could possibly find. How anyone involved in this game’s development could look at this deeply racist and downright embarrassing excuse for a character and think this was okay, I don’t know.
And before anyone tries to excuse it by saying that he has been living in China for a hundred years, so he’s bound to pick a few things up, please note that Nolan North is in this game playing the Furon Emperor Meningitis, who also has an over the top ‘ah so’ accent. Now I suppose some could argue that the game is satirising how Asian people were portrayed at the time, but if that’s what the game is going for, they’ve failed miserably. See, the problem with that argument is that replicating something doesn’t count as satire. By recreating over the top racist caricatures, you’re not making fun of them. If anything you’re just reinforcing them. The first game’s satire of the Red Scare worked so much better than this because there was an actual point behind it. It comments on how paranoid the people of the 50s were at the time by using Majestic to exploit the threat of communism in order to cover up alien activity, and everyone willingly buys into it because of that sheer paranoia. Now yes, admittedly the humour in Destroy All Humans isn’t the most sophisticated in the world, but it used to be a LOT better than this. Not only do I find the racial stereotyping in this game deeply offensive, it’s also frankly beneath this franchise. And it’s not just limited to the Chinese either. The final act takes us to the Furon homeworld (which was pretty underwhelming after four games worth of buildup) and we meet another Furon called Endometriosis whose only characteristics are that he has an Italian accent and wears a beret. It’s these broad strokes and general laziness that makes this game such a disappointing experience.
Path Of The Furon is subpar in every way imaginable. The writing, the humour, the gameplay and even the graphics. The first two games looked so much better than this and they were on older consoles from the previous generation. It’s shocking.
It’s hard to blame Sandblast Games for this considering they were shut down before development was finished. It was THQ’s mismanagement and financial woes that killed off this franchise and indeed themselves. The company went bankrupt in 2012 and their various IPs were sold off to other studios, with Nordic Games buying the lions’ share, including Destroy All Humans, which briefly reignited hopes that we might get another game, but that seemed unlikely considering the franchise has never exactly been a mainstream success. There was even talks of doing an animated sitcom based on the games for Fox, to be written by the same guy who did King Of The Hill, but that never went anywhere.
No. It seemed like Destroy All Humans was gone for good and fans reluctantly made peace with that. It was fun while it lasted, but perhaps it was time to move on.
Oh The Furonity!
I’m not going to lie. I was pretty sure we were never going to see Destroy All Humans return. Not just because of its lack of mainstream appeal, but also because game development studios and publishers in recent years have become more and more reluctant to make single player, mid-tier games. Instead pivoting toward massive triple A releases and ‘live services’. So it came as a rather pleasant surprise when Nordic Games, now named THQ Nordic, released Darksiders III in 2018, a sequel to a series of games that were also not very mainstream but still had a significant cult following. This briefly reignited a small flicker of hope within me that maybe, just maybe, we might see our favourite Furon return.
And as you already know, I got my wish. A new Destroy All Humans game will be released next year by THQ Nordic and Black Forest Games.
So what can this remake learn from the franchise’s past? Well thankfully the writing and voice acting is going to remain the same, so story, characterisation and humour won’t be an issue. They’re also incorporating elements from the sequels such as Transmogrify from Destroy All Humans 2 and giving PK its own button like in Path Of The Furon. There’s also a few new additions that I’m excited about such as the ability to dodge and strafe using the jetpack. That should make combat much more exciting and dynamic. I know a few people have a problem with the new cartoony designs of the humans and the world, but I honestly don’t mind. In fact I think it suits the tone and setting quite well. Hopefully people will eventually get used to it. The big question mark hovering over all this is whether they’re planning to remake the other games in the series. I for one would love to see a remake of the second game. As for Big Willy Unleashed and Path Of The Furon, I think it’s best to leave them firmly in the past. The big dream would be to see Crypto and Pox have further adventures together beyond the first two games. Hopefully even have enough sequels to get the characters to the present day. We’ll just have to wait and see what the future brings. My only word of advice for them would be to never forget what made the first two games so good and so beloved. Big Willy Unleashed and Path Of The Furon lost their way, as its writing and humour grew lazier and lazier. If we are fortunate enough to get more games, the developers will need to remember what it was about the first game that made it so special and build off of it.
This is a second chance. Not a lot of franchises get this. Don’t waste it. Here’s hoping the remake will provide the definitive Destroy All Humans experience and that it will gain the success it deserves.

PlayStation Games Nominated for The Game Awards 2019
2019 was another big year for PlayStation at The Game Awards. Sony’s first-party titles were well-represented among the nominees, with 3 PlayStation exclusives nominated for a total of 12 awards. This year, the winner of every non-mobile video game category is on PlayStation, solidifying Sony’s comfortable position as King of this generation. What were the PlayStation games up for an award at The Game Awards 2019? Who won big and who walked away without a statue of an armless lady? Read on to find out!
Death Stranding
Kojima Productions/Sony Interactive Entertainment
If there’s any one game that PlayStation was betting on to make a splash at TGA 2019, it would be Kojima Productions’ Death Stranding. Marketed as an open-world supernatural action-adventure title, Death Stranding confused many gamers with its strange, borderline-obsessive focus on the physical mechanics of walking. Boasting a star-studded lineup starring the likes of Mads Mikkelsen and Norman Reedus – even Guillermo del Toro makes a cameo in the game – this bizarre post-apocalyptic package-carrying simulator took home awards for Best Game Direction and Best Score/Music.

Blood & Truth
SIE London Studio/Sony Interactive Entertainment
Blood & Truth is an unbelievably cool first-person shooter experience designed exclusively for the PlayStation VR. This high-stakes corridor shooter is an immersive virtual reality experience of a quality unparalleled in the landscape of largely amateur VR offerings. Propelled by a cast of well-acted characters, this intense spy drama isn’t just one of PSVR’s best titles, it’s one of the best VR titles period.

Best VR/AR Game
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice
FromSoftware/Activision
FromSoftware has built a reputation for developing action-adventure games that are hard-as-nails but greatly reward the patient and skilled gamer. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice follows in this tradition, offering a challenging swashbuckling experience in the vein of Dark Souls but with a greater emphasis on speed and verticality. It follows the tale of shinobi known as Wolf, sworn guardian indentured to the young lord of a powerful clan. When his master is stolen away in the dead of night, Wolf sets out on a journey to rescue his liege and get revenge on the people responsible. Its battles are quick yet cerebral, pitting you in deadly combat against all manner of beast and monster inspired by Japanese mythology in a number of breathtaking locales and stages. It’s a standout title in a year full of amazing releases with gorgeous visuals, magnificent character and stage design, and a beautiful soundtrack, and so it comes as no surprise that Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice won TGA 2019’s Game of the Year and Best Action/Adventure Game.

Control
Remedy Entertainment/505 Games
Playing Control is like stepping into the shoes of the protagonist in a Syfy supernatural horror series, but with better writing and likeable characters. It’s set in a frightening paranormal realm contained within the Oldest House, a towering, faceless Brutalist structure in New York City. The mysteries contained with the Oldest House are so enticing that curiosity keeps you marching ever forward. The excellent writing, wonderful cast of superb actors, and some of the most amazing world-design we’ve ever seen make this a horror game to remember.

Resident Evil 2
Capcom
This game single-handedly redefined what a remake is and what it can be. Rebuilt from the ground up, Resident Evil 2 is a modern re-envisioning of the PlayStation classic, taking the same premise and characters and adopting them into a modern game engine. The remake also eschews tank controls, fixed cameras, and pre-rendered backgrounds in favor of a more action-based third-person experience, making this 2019 hit a completely different beast from its mid-90s inspiration. It’s also an incredibly thrilling and fun horror shooter that earned universal praise from both critics and players. The only thing keeping it from reaching absolute perfection is the fact that the original’s iconic voiceover sadly didn’t make the cut in this new version.
Nominated for
Game of the Year, Best Game Direction, Best Audio Design, Best Action/Adventure Game
The Outer Worlds
Obsidian Entertainment/Private Division
With The Outer Worlds, Obsidian has shown once again why they’ve been a leader in story-driven RPGs for decades. It’s a Fallout game that’s better than actual Fallout built atop stellar world-building and a level of care for character development and story writing that’s unparalleled in the industry. It takes an approach to games development completely contrary to the Bethesda method. Instead of creating massive open worlds filled with repetitive side quests, serviceable-though-generic characters, and relying on world design to carry it through, the Outer Worlds is a shorter but significantly more packed adventure. Here’s hoping we see more games like it.
Nominated for
Game of the Year, Best Narrative, Best Performance (Ashly Burch), Best Role Playing Game
Outer Wilds
Mobius Digital/Annapurna Interactive
Outer Wilds (not be mistaken with The Outer Worlds) is a co-operative first-person adventure like no other we’ve played. It’s based around a time loop; every 22 minutes the galaxy explodes, throwing you back in time to exactly 22 minutes before critical mass. What you do to fill those 22 minutes is up to you. Perhaps you’ll explore the caves and locales around you, maybe you’ll spend it reading text logs or listening to tapes left behind by a mysterious alien species. The adventurous among you might even try to find a way to stop the galaxy from exploding. You have very little power to change things, a concept foundational to cosmic horror, but Outer Wilds isn’t Lovecraftian Groundhogs Day. It’s a beautiful and often hilarious exploration into what time means when you’ve got none of it – and all of it – left.

Fortnite
Epic Games
What can be said about Fortnite that hasn’t been said before? It’s still immensely popular months after its wave of “trendiness” has passed, and it continues to see updates, patches, and seasonal expansions that keep it fresh for long-time players. Epic Games’ cash cow is designed to have a long tail and we wouldn’t be surprised to see it at the TGAs for many more years to come.

Apex Legends
Respawn Entertainment/Electronic Arts
Apex Legends released seemingly out of nowhere, immediately capturing a massive audience thanks to its compelling combination of Battle Royale and class-based, character-driven squad shooters and, of course, its immeasurable streamability. For a few months near its release, Apex Legends dominated Twitch, with professional streamers both old and new riding the crest of its wave of popularity for weeks on end. It might not be nearly as popular as it was at release, but Apex Legends continues to be supported by its developers, with new characters, maps, and game modes introduced all the time.

Destiny 2
Bungie
It’s difficult to imagine Bungie, the studio behind Destiny and Halo, as an indie studio, but this year they broke off their relationship with Activision and decided to go solo with Destiny 2’s development. This year we also saw Destiny 2 go the free-to-play route, with players able to play through the content of previous seasons without spending any cash. Having spent uncountable hours blasting Vex in the Vex Offensive, we can attest to the addictive and fun qualities of Destiny 2.

Final Fantasy XIV
Square Enix
Final Fantasy XIV is a shining example of what a game can become if its developers are willing to reflect on their mistakes and take a second chance on a failed product. Without going too deep into its history, put simply the Final Fantasy XIV we have today isn’t the same game that we got at launch – it’s much, much better. It’s been a long six years since the game released, but it’s still going strong with a large and stable playerbase and constant, world-changing expansions that keep the game from getting stale.

Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege
Ubisoft
Rainbow Six Siege made it past rocky beginnings and has cemented its position as a multiplayer powerhouse that sits comfortably in Steam’s most popular games every month for the past several years. It’s a tactical class-based 5v5 shooter that’s endlessly fun and requires tight teamwork on top of immaculate shooting to win the day. It’s also one of the most watchable esports around, so fans of games with a healthy balance of action and strategy should give it a go. It’s good to see Siege getting the attention and praise it deserves after its poor launch.

Best Ongoing Game, Best Community Support
Disco Elysium
ZA/UM
Disco Elysium is an excellent RPG that tells the tale of a balding cop afflicted by a drink-induced amnesia. Like Planescape: Torment, interactions revolve around the game’s robust dialog system, with every choice you make branching off into a thousand different alternate paths. It’s the first game we played since Planescape where your decisions really had an impact on the world, not only with regards to how the plot develops, but also on how characters treat you and how your character treats others. Any self-proclaiming fan of RPGs should play Disco Elysium and see why it won this year’s Best Role Playing Game award at TGA 2019.

A Plague Tale: Innocence
Asobo Studio/Focus Home Interactive
A Plague Tale: Innocence is a gritty and dark game about two siblings, a sister and her younger brother, as they flee from a mysterious gang of bloodthirsty murderers who want to see them dead. It’s a dramatic thriller that thrives in its ability to create tension from thin air. It’s a stealth game that’s built around a complex system of interactions, allowing for creative solutions to the problems you face. Through it all, you’re responsible for the safety of the younger brother, Hugo; some of the most frightening and stressful moments in the game are when a noise or person distracts you and you lose track of him. It’s arresting and creates a constant sense of danger that’s stressful but absolutely memorable.
Sayonara Wild Hearts
Simogo/Annapurna Interactive
Sayonara Wild Hearts is an arcade game of a kind we haven’t seen since the age of coin-op game machines and Saturday morning gaming sessions in our pajamas. It’s set in a dream-like, neon universe thrown into chaos by the breaking of a woman’s heart. There’s dancing, swordfighting, motorcycle racing, skateboarding – every 90s kid’s sandbox fantasy put together. It’s also insanely stylish with a visual and audio flair that sticks with you long after you’ve finished playing.

Best Art Direction, Best Score, Best Mobile Game
Devil May Cry 5
Capcom
Devil May Cry 5 still has all the over-the-top action and ridiculous cutscenes characteristic of the series, and the combat is just as frenetic and electrifying as it’s ever been. The new playable character, V, is a brave departure for the series, a non-combatant who summons animal familiars to do his bidding. There are massive changes with how Nero handles in combat, Dante has a cool new wizard hat, and V is character unlike any we’ve ever seen in the series, but Devil May Cry 5 is a declaration by Capcom – the King is Back! it’s good to see Devil May Cry back in the hands of Capcom after the disappointment that was DmC. More please.

Kingdom Hearts III
Square Enix
A month before Kingdom Hearts III’s release, we decided to catch up with the game’s tale and get up to speed with the adventures of Sora, Donald, and Goofy to prepare for number 3. It’s a rabbit hole of plot twists, weird naming conventions, lots of puns revolving around hearts and darkness, and multiple characters with the same name. When you start Kingdom Hearts III, you’ll probably have little idea what’s happening. Once you’ve finished, not much will have changed, but you’ll know that you love the characters and you love its Final Fantasy-meets-Disney concept, even if you don’t understand what the heck is going on.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
Infinity Ward/Activision
The original Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare has a special place in the hearts of gamers who were around to play it. Beautiful set pieces? Check. Drop-dead gorgeous visuals? Check. An interesting story? Absolutely check. That first Modern Warfare was a special, special game. 2019’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare reboots the franchise, bringing back the series’ most-loved characters and throwing them into an all-new conflict with different stakes. It might never be the game-changer that Cod4 was, but the new Modern Warfare is a damn good game and one of our favorite shooters of the year.

Borderlands 3
Gearbox/2K Games
Borderlands 3, much like Metro Exodus, has been unfairly judges by the decision by its producers to make it a temporary Epic Game exclusive. A lot of hubbub has been stirred about what timed exclusives mean for PC gaming. So much, in fact, that we all had to remind ourselves that Borderlands 3 is a great game. It’s the pinnacle of loot shooters by the team that helped define the term, offering everything the first two games gave us but blown up and multiplied by 1000.

Tomb Raider Reloaded Blasts Onto Mobile This Month
CDE Entertainment and Emerald City Games have finally revealed the release date of the anticipated free-to-play roguelike arcade adventure Tomb Raider Reloaded, which falls exactly on Lara Croft’s birthday, February 14th! The game will make its way to Apple and Android mobile devices, as well as Netflix’s own games service, in which subscribers will be able to play without any ads or in-app purchases.
Alongside the announcement, the team shared a brand new trailer featuring our beloved heroine in cinematic action sequences and snippets of gameplay footage.
youtube
Tomb Raider Reloaded takes players on an action-filled adventure as they jump into the boots of groundbreaking hero Lara Croft on her swan-diving, cliff-climbing, back-flipping quest to obtain the ancient Scion artefact, clearing ever-changing rooms filled with new and familiar enemies as well as hazardous traps and puzzles. Along the way, they’ll acquire run-specific boosts alongside permanent rewards, like XP modifiers, runes that improve Lara’s stats, and manuals used to unlock and upgrade her outfits, such as her fan-favorite bomber jacket.
As players progress through each level, they can stack perks to enhance Lara’s abilities, and even craft weapons to upgrade her arsenal.
As a love-letter to the franchise, the game is set to delight old and new fans of the saga as it features iconic Tomb Raider locations, namely the City of Vilcabamba, the Lost Valley, and St. Francis’ Folly; memorable characters, from the likes of Winston, Kurtis Trent, Anaya Imanu, and Werner Von Croy; along with artefacts, outfits, and more.
Also making a return is the lovely Keeley Hawes, the British actress that lent her voice to our adventurer in the LAU trilogy and the two spin-offs—Guardian of Light and Temple of Osiris. If that wasn’t enough, it was revealed back in the 25th anniversary celebrations that the legendary voice actresses Shelley Blond (Tomb Raider), Judith Gibbins (Tomb Raider II, Tomb Raider III), and Jonell Elliott (The Last Revelation, Chronicles, The Angel of Darkness), will be reprising their roles as Lara and players would be able to chose their favourite between them all.
This connection to the series’ long-lasting legacy is reinforced by the game’s soundtrack, which includes orchestral recordings of classic Tomb Raider themes, spearheaded by musician Tina Guo—who made her solo debut in Peter Connelly’s The Dark Angel Symphony album.
Tomb Raider Reloaded will be available worldwide on the Apple App Store, Google Play Store, and Netflix Games Service on February 14th. For a limited time after launch, all players will receive an exclusive golden version of Lara’s iconic dual pistols, like the ones you can see above.

Paradox Interactive Closes Tectonic Studio The Same Week It Canceled Its First Game, Life By You
New Post has been published on https://thedigitalinsider.com/paradox-interactive-closes-tectonic-studio-the-same-week-it-canceled-its-first-game-life-by-you/
Paradox Interactive Closes Tectonic Studio The Same Week It Canceled Its First Game, Life By You
Earlier this week, Paradox Interactive announced it was canceling Life By You, a simulation game meant to rival Sims in development at Paradox Tectonic. With Rod Humble, a lead designer on The Sims 2 and The Sims 3, leading Tectonic, fans were hopeful about Life By You, which was set to launch into Early Access earlier this month before an indefinite delay.
That Early Access launch never happened as Life By You was subsequently canceled, and now, in the same week, Paradox Interactive has announced it is closing Tectonic, as reported by Game Developer.
“This is difficult and drastic news for our colleagues at Tectonic, who’ve worked hard on Life By You’s Early Access release,” Paradox Interactive CEO Fredrik Wester writes in a press release. “Sadly, with the cancelation of their sole project, we have to take the tough decision to close down the studio. We are deeply grateful for their hard work in trying to take Paradox into a new genre.”

As previously noted, this studio closure is happening shortly after Paradox Interactive canceled development on Life By You. Wester said at the time, “For a long time, we’ve held hopes for Life By You and the game potential we saw it in it, but it is now clear that the game will not be able to meet our expectations. A version that we’d be satisfied with is too far away, and therefore we are taking the difficult decision to cancel the release.”
In the span of days, Life By You was canceled, and the studio behind it, Tectonic, closed. This is another blow to an industry bleeding developers and studios left and right, and Tectonic’s closure joins an ever-growing list of disheartening closures and layoffs in 2024.
Earlier this month, Dead by Daylight developer Behaviour Interactive laid off 95 employees.

Peter Connelly announces Tomb Raider: The Dark Angel Symphony
Legendary Tomb Raider™ composer announces fan-driven Kickstarter campaign to bring beloved videogame soundtrack to life!
London, August 27th, 2018.
2019 marks the 20th anniversary of composer Peter Connelly’s first work on the Tomb Raider™ franchise. To celebrate this landmark event, Connelly is announcing today that he is launching a crowdfunding campaign (via Kickstarter) to produce a studio album featuring the music from Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation, Tomb Raider: Chronicles and, most excitingly of all, Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness. This campaign has been organised entirely by a dedicated group of die-hard Tomb Raider™ fans and features world-class names within the music industry.
For nearly 20 years, Connelly and Tomb Raider™ fans have dreamed of hearing these beloved musical scores on a fully mastered studio album. Now, thanks to the crowd-funding power of Kickstarter, they have their chance to realise this dream. This campaign will be launched on the 1st October 2018.
The album will not be a direct copy of the original Tomb Raider™ games’ scores, although it will remain faithful to those classic soundtracks. The music will be transformed and rearranged using techniques and personnel that were simply not available or within reach 15–20 years ago. Connelly intends to bring the musical compositions and recordings up to date and provide the listener, not only a sense of nostalgia, but with a whole new experience of this familiar and much-loved Tomb Raider™ music.
The original versions of Connelly’s pieces will also be made available, properly remastered and beautifully presented, to tie-in with the new orchestral album so that fans can enjoy the original scores in the best possible quality.
Tomb Raider: The Dark Angel Symphony has been in development for about two years. This project is – uniquely – driven and arranged entirely “by the fans, for the fans” and sanctioned by Square Enix Europe and Crystal Dynamics.
Tomb Raider: The Dark Angel Symphony treats old and new fans alike to the finest musicians, sound engineers and arrangers in the world, including:
Dr Richard Niles – Orchestrator / Arranger / Musician. "One of the most versatile men in modern music", who has worked alongside such musical legends such as Paul McCartney, the Pet Shop Boys (“Left to my Own Devices” http://bit.ly/29fgxMk), Ray Charles, Cher, James Brown, Kylie Minogue, Tears for Fears (“Sowing The Seeds of Love” http://bit.ly/1iybTmN), Tina Turner, Cat Stevens, Grace Jones, Swing Out Sister, Take That, and Grammy- and Ivor Novello Award-winning producer Trevor Horn CBE (“The Man Who Invented The Eighties”).
Isobel Griffiths – Orchestra contractor. A frequent collaborator of Richard Niles, she has also worked with Hans Zimmer, Howard Shaw, and James Horner (to name but a few) in hand-picking musicians for orchestral ensembles.
Martin Iveson (Atjazz) – Musician, Composer, and Audio Production/ Mastering specialist with a long history of working in videogames and the music industry.
More special guests to be announced soon!
The studio album will be recorded at the prestigious Air Lyndhurst Studios, London. This state-of-the-art studio has the perfect facilities to achieve the album’s production requirements.
Artwork, promotional material, pledge rewards, websites and social media feeds, pamphlets and miscellany are also being produced by Connelly’s team. Backers of the Kickstarter campaign will have the chance to obtain rare and sought-after Tomb Raider™ merchandise and exclusive memorabilia.
