The others might not remember, but Phantasm does, on some level. A mysterious group of strangers passing by, one smelling of mint… is that why they can’t remember what happened that night?

No, but they don’t know that.

Phantasm half remembers Perci, and sees Ramos. They don’t handle it great.

The "Mid-Tone/Minted One" is Ramos from @vulpixisananimal . Surprising no one who has followed me the last few days, not-quite me is attacking more of her OC's.

Semi-follow up to this. No idea where in the blinding Universe this would take place in her canon if at all... but eh. Fanfic of fanfic. The cycle of inspiration and creativity continues.

Also, see here for Phantasm (and Luna's) abilities. We can't draw people, so guess you just have to guess at what Claire/ISAT-ified Ms. Hostess looks like in Realspace (hint: darkless hair, half-moon glasses, probably long sleeves and a skirt).

(Claire sighed as she waited for the cup of tea in front of her to cool. The little café was noisy, and she wasn’t really sure what she was doing here. It was more money being spent, and it wasn’t as though she had anyone with her. And as welcoming as people were here, it still felt awkward. But her head had been hurting for days now, and the idea of cooking her own food made her want to cry. Yes yes, how mature of her, but everyone burnt out sometimes, right? Her eyes scanned the menu from behind half moon glasses as she tried to figure out what to eat. Maybe crepes? Something sweet sounded good, but chamomile already was sweet. Maybe savory, then.)

(The smell of chamomile was a balm on her soul. It was a little early for the sleepiest of teas, but too late for anything caffeinated, and the only other option was mint. Normally, she adored mint, but for whatever reason, she’d developed a sudden aversion.)

(How unfortunate, then, that someone apparently stunk of it.)

<Their heart spiked as a group walked out. A large group. An older Ka Buan woman, a broad-shouldered man, a shorter one with mid-tone hair, a darkless one, a Housemaiden, a darker skinned one with a hat, and a child with an even bigger hat. Clustered together, it was impossible to tell which one of them stunk of mint or why, but it didn’t sit right.>

<Plus those faces, why did they look blinding familiar? Surely they’d remember such an odd bunch, but there was a hole in them. A hole where something had been ripped out. It was a familiar pain, familiar like a rotten tooth you never had the money to pull so just lived with. But the context was new, was wrong, like they’d sprouted another tooth through their blinding arm or something.>

(She should just leave it. Leave them. Just go home and pretend this didn’t happen.)

<But something was STOLEN! The ache was still there! It had to be their fault, it HAD to be! Were these people why their head hurt? Why they’d woken up with a bloody nose and pain that didn’t cease?>

{There could be any number of reasons, we’d been working ourselves half to death with that deadline. It’s probably just stress, so let’s just ignore them and get some crepes-}

<SHUT! UP!>

(She threw down enough coins to pay for the tea,) <equipping their Memory of Neglect: It’s your nature to go unseen. No one would see them, even when they needed it. Might as well use that. They didn’t need food, they needed answers, needed to know, needed safety revenge!>

<It was getting late, but that was whatever. The dark was nice. Less people, less work, less eyes on them. Even their Memory wasn’t perfect; start enough of a ruckus, and even the most blind people would eventually pay attention, but not the good kind. No, it was safer to be alone…>

<And even safer to be armed.>

<Phantasm equipped: Sharp Rock. Just like you! Can do either scissors or rock damage, whichever hurts worse.>

(Something was wrong. Something was wrong wrong wrong wrong-)

(No! She couldn’t. Something was wrong. Her chest felt tight, adrenaline flooding her system. Her head hurt even worse than before, and her breaths were tight. But hey, a little more exercise couldn’t hurt, right? It might run off some stress!)

(She knew she should eat, but she wasn’t hungry. Instead, she just turned the rock over and over in her hands. It had a nice feel to it, though she had to be careful of the point.)

<They slipped into the inn. Just keep walking like you owned the place, no one would question it.>

(She just wanted to talk to them. Maybe they knew something? About… mint?)

<It watched from a distance as the group split off, pretending to look at room numbers. They’d been actually lost enough to know what being lost looked like. The pale one spared a glance their way, and for a moment, the Ka Buan stared too closely, but their eyes glazed over and they both looked away.>

(The Universe was good at averting eyes, when it needed to. And she wasn’t much to look at anyways.)

<The group started splitting up, and they walked by, taking a deep breath. That one. Mid-tone. Looked harmless, but that never meant anything. The group just shuffled politely aside to let them pass.>

<Soon the hallway cleared. Room 102 for Minty. They looked around. Once. Twice. Stuff the rock in your pocket, that’ll be suspicious. No one here? Listen for footsteps… No? Good.>

<Phantasm Equipped: Memory of Escape: they can’t keep you here forever. It was more for getting out of places, but technically getting into a room was getting out of a hallway. Right? They hoped it worked that way.>

<Now let’s see… is that lock pickable? Well, not if all they had was a rock. Any pins? No? Of course not, that’d be too easy. Blinding->

Creeeeeak! “Go ahead and unpack, I’ll- oof!” <The older of the hat siblings(?) ran right into them.> “Crab, sorry!”

“’S fine,” <they murmured, barely paying attention as they switched hurriedly back to Memory of Neglect. Don’t look at them don’t look at them don’t look at them->

<The hatted one moved away… and there on the ground was her key. Thank you, Universe! They waited until she left, until they were alone, to steel themselves. To numb themselves. Don’t let them in, don’t let them rattle you, don’t let them pull tricks this time…>

<There was a familiar feeling of wavery, half-existence as they became Untouchable. It wasn’t the best shield, but would keep that mint off of them, if only a bit. This time, they’d win.>

<This time, they’d be ready!>

<Their heart surged, starting their Spiral *ATT up! DEF down!* as they switched to Memory of Phantasm Volatile, but always ready for a fight!, pulling their Sharp Rock as they unlocked the door, slamming it shut behind them. They’re doing this specifically to target the queer and nsfw content found on fanfiction sites, and singled out ao3 because it is a non-profit with no corporate backing to protect it. Their ‘reasoning’, if you can even call it that, is here.

PLEASE, do not refresh your Ao3 pages. Close all your ao3 tabs and do not log in or try and load any fanfics until this is sorted out. We want to make this as easy for ao3 to resolve as possible. SPREAD THE NEWS and show support for the volunteer staff of ao3 that are currently working to try and fix this.

Heads up folks, NicoNicoDouga is currently down due to a large scale cyberattack

The attack happened on the 8th and the site is still down in terms of video streaming. Apparently there were reports of Ransomware being used during the attack.

The site is still “down” but the blog part is back up but from the report, videos and content posted are ok so do not fret. The site is still down as of this post (save for the blog) and it seems they are working their hardest to fix it and do damage control.

Here is a rough translation of their most recent post:

Report and apology regarding cyberattack on our services

As announced in Niconico Info dated June 8th, 2024, Dwango Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Chuo-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Takeshi Natsuno) has been unable to use the entire Niconico service operated by our company since the early morning of June 8th. It has been confirmed that this outage was caused by a large-scale cyberattack, including ransomware, and we are currently temporarily suspending use of the service and conducting an investigation and response to fully grasp the extent of the damage and restore it.

After confirming the cyberattack, we immediately took emergency measures such as shutting down the relevant servers, and have set up a task force to fully clarify the damage, determine the cause, and restore the system. We would like to report the findings of the investigation to date and future responses as follows.

We sincerely apologize to our users and related parties for the great inconvenience and concern caused.

Around 3:30 a.m. on June 8, a malfunction occurred that prevented all of our web services, including our "Nico Nico" and "N Preparatory School" services, from working properly. After an investigation, it was confirmed that the malfunction was caused by a cyber attack, including ransomware, at around 8 a.m. on the same day. A task force was set up on the same day, and in order to prevent the damage from spreading, we immediately cut off communication between servers in the data center provided by our group companies and shut down the servers, temporarily suspending the provision of our web services. In addition, since it was discovered that the attack had also extended to our internal network, we suspended the use of some of our internal business systems and prohibited access to the internal network.

As of June 14, we are currently investigating the extent of the damage and formulating recovery procedures, aiming for a gradual recovery.

This cyber attack by a third party was repeated even after it was discovered, and even after a server in the private cloud was shut down remotely, the third party was observed to be remotely starting the server and spreading the infection. Therefore, the power cables and communication cables of the servers were physically disconnected and blocked. The Niconico Video system, posted video data, and video distribution system were operated on the public cloud, so they were not affected. Niconico Live Broadcasting did not suffer any damage as the system itself was run on a public cloud, but the system that controls Niconico Live Broadcasting's video distribution is run on a private cloud of a group company, so it is possible that past time-shifted footage, etc. may not be available. We are also gradually checking the status of systems other than Niconico Douga and Niconico Live Broadcasting.

You sat leaned against a tree in the yard, with your knees pulled up against your chest, clearly sulking. Normally during your brief breaks while training you didn't mind socialising with other warriors and warrior candidates but you didn't feel like talking today.

It has been a rough training session, and Commander Magath seemed to be in an especially foul mood. He wasn't normally a kind man either, but today, he seemed to treat everyone like absolute dirt. Usually, you didn't give much thought to his words, but this time, he just went too far.

You knew how he was, so really, you were more angry than hurt and felt if you spoke to anyone you'd have no kind words to say.

Even when Zeke approached asking if he could sit with you, you only replied with a curt nod.

He plopped down next to you, lit a cigarette and hesitantly rattled the box in your direction.

"Want a smoke?"

You wordlessly plucked a cigarette from the box and placed it between your lips then glanced at Zeke expectantly. He quickly realised what you were waiting for and pushed his box of matches open only to find it empty.

"Oh...I guess I just used the last one. No matter, allow me," he leaned closer to your face and pressed the tip of his cigarette to yours. You inhaled then pulled away once you felt smoke filling your lungs.

"Thanks Zeke," you mumbled and took a long drag from the cigarette. You could feel the tension melting away immediately. But you weren't entirely sure if it was due to the nicotine or Zeke's sudden closeness.

You looked up at him again and noticed the smoke emanating from the direction of his hand. Was it only from the cigarette or was he still healing a bad injury?

No, it was definitely an injury.

You took another drag from your cigarette, and so did he.

And another.

And another.

When you both finished, he was ready to tuck his hands away into his pockets, but you caught the edge of his sleeve.

"You're hurt."

"It doesn't matter."

"Yes it does. You got hurt during training, I saw it, I just didn't realise how bad it was."

Zeke's laid-back facade breaking was somewhat given away by the fact he answered through gritted teeth. "It does not matter."

He hoped you'd think he was adamant about it because of the rapid healing that came with being a titan shifter but honestly it was because he'd grown accustomed to downplaying and ignoring his injuries as a kid. No one cared then, why would anyone care now. Especially now!

He was too lost in thought to register the way you shifted closer and brought his hand up to your face.

"This will help you heal even quicker," you said and gently pressed your lips against his hand. "See, it's better already."

Zeke sheepishly leaned his head on your shoulder. "Yes, much better...but I'm still hurt."

You seemed confused for a moment, but you could almost see the gears in his head turning. Zeke was definitely up to something.

"You are?" you asked with your eyebrows slightly raised, not feeling patient enough to begin guessing what he meant.

He lazily lifted his head and turned towards you, his hand now cupping your cheek.

"Well...what if I told you I also suffered a terrible lip injury?" he asked and leaned so close you could smell the cigarettes and coffee on his breath.

You let out a soft laugh, you could never resist indulging him – not for long anyhow.

"I'd call you a liar..." you answered, your eyes fluttering shut as you closed the distance between you.

You let your lips brush against each other tentatively before giving him a tender peck on the lips.

They were surprisingly soft but you didn't want to linger in case anyone saw.

Not that you felt ashamed or anything like that, but you didn't need anyone staring. Besides, Zeke was a fiercely private person, so in public, even something so small was a bold move by his standards.

"Just don't try to tell me your tongue hurts too," you teased and touched the tip of your nose against his, then gave him another quick kiss before pulling away and standing up.

Zeke looked up at you, his blue eyes large and earnest.

"Will I see you tonight?"

You chuckled and nodded. "Certainly, I couldn't stay away even if I tried."
