man. soul (pixar) should be held up more as a marvel of modern animation. like i know there was some buzz when it came out about the complexity of character design in the film, even with the background characters, which was technically impossible to pull off two decades ago, and the hair texture, the background design... but it really is a milestone imo. both lifelike and intensely characterful, capturing the simultaneous beauty and dullness of a city, which ties perfectly into the themes of the movie: the simultaneous beauty and dullness of life. it's no ITSV in terms of how revolutionary it is from a visual standpoint, but it's probably second to spiderverse, at least imo.

(and, y'know, with all the beautiful, expressive realism of the movie... i really really wish we didn't spend so much time looking at turquoise bean people. this will forever be the biggest flaw of the movie for me).
