Kangaroo Court by Capital Cities! TW for gore and animal violence.

This song is a bit... graphic, if you know the proper meaning behind it. The music video makes it more obvious!

Kangaroo Courts are loaded courts; they are a court where you are guilty the instant you step in. There is no "innocent until proven guilty." The judgement is predetermined based on evidence that doesn't exist.

Lately, in syscourse, I see a lot of kangaroo-courting going on. People have made judgement calls about others, coming into the system community with preconceived notions, and they are not open to seeing the other person as anything other than what they predetermined. There is no evidence to point to the other person being "bad" by any measure, but because of the judgement they came into the space with, they have already determined what 'sort of person' the other party is.

The thing I find so remarkable about this song is... the protagonist accepts it from the very start. "I've got every excuse to dance these blues away - ain't coming home, I ain't coming home." He knows he will be found guilty for a crime. He knows that defending himself won't work in a kangaroo court, but he goes anyways, despite all the risks. He stands up for himself, but it gets exhausting. "Too weak to fight," he says.

Then the "judge pulls him aside" and tells him to "let his darker side out to feed." I feel like that happens often here, too; people feel backed into a corner, like they have to fight, and those around them say, "everyone will believe you're guilty whatever you do, so just fight without caring about them. What do you care about someone who will just see you as guilty anyways?"

But isn't that the same thing that happened, in reverse? You've set up this notion that the other side will do nothing but see you as guilty in every case, so... what, you set yourself up to be a monster?

I find the actions of the protagonist at the end to be the most admirable conclusion, even though it ends poorly for him. Because he admits who he is, proudly, and says what he's actually guilty of.

"I commit the crime of wasting time always trying to rhyme, yes I am guilty, but don't misunderstand me."

The crime is wasting so much of your life trying to follow in other people's footsteps; to play along with the court.

Even though it ends in misery and tragedy here... The news report in the music video shows riots. Shows progress, however grim.

I guess what I'm trying to get at (as I write this somewhat late at night -- sorry y'all!) is that people are coming into these spaces with preconceived notions, and playing into those preconceived notions very firmly. How is this helping anything? Is it really doing anything to play along with the crowd?

Yes, there is some value in labels and judging people based on them. But... at the end of the day, following the norm is not always best, and playing along with those norms just allows the norms that harm groups to be... well... normalized!

I hope that makes a little bit of sense.

Zayne goes back to work the day after his birthday and everyone takes note of the pep he has in his step. The usually stern, down-to-business doctor has been grinning ear to ear since he stepped through the door, and all the patients, doctors, and nurses can't help but notice how vibrant he is. Zayne is positively beaming- his grim aura nonexistent through the brilliance he is currently exhibiting

Most people are confused by this sudden and aggressive shift in his demeanor, but chock it up to Zayne just being in a particularly nice mood after his trip. Whatever happened on his leave must have been truly wonderful for the doctor, and that happiness was contagious. The residents of the hospital can't help but be pleased that Asko's pride and joy finally seemed to get a moment of blissful respite.

Only Greyson and Yvonne exchange knowing looks, understanding the truth of the situation immediately. Hit with the realization of just how good his mini-vacation was (and how most of that was thanks to you), they can't help but tease their friend a bit, taking turns asking prodding questions, snickering when the only response he provides is clearing his throat and demanding they get back to work.

However it's up to Yvonne to break the news to Zayne, as it became apparent that while Greyson noticed it as well, he was too flustered by seeing it to say anything. Zayne probably thought he was being safe wearing that turtleneck under his lab coat, despite the fact that it was still far too hot aside for such attire. Unluckily for him the signs of your affection would not be so easily contained, and the large red and purple splotch the crept past the hem of his collar was not something that could be played off as a simple wound-the teeth marks made sure of that.

She had never seen Zayne turn quite so red as the moment she pulled him aside and told him, and for a moment she felt almost bad for telling him, wondering if maybe she should have let him figure it out on his own to save him from the awkwardness. However when she looked back on the man as she was departing, watching as he gingerly touched your mark, a roguish smile dancing on his lips as it no doubt made him reminisce about the moment he received it from you, that she realized his blush was not from embarrassment alone.

"Aaaahhhhh oh myy-" the rest of what you were saying was incomprehensible because the words slurred together in an excited squeal. A gleeful expression upon your face, you waved and shook your hands in front of your body, then pressed them over your mouth, to stifle another squeal.

Ford smiled to himself as he watched you from the other side of the room, where he propped his notebook open to scribble something down.

"Heeyyyyy Grunkle Ford, watcha got there?" Mabel's voice rang out right beside him.

He snapped the book shut and whipped his head around.

"Mabel!"

"Waves hands when excited." she cited what she had just read, "Were you talking about-"

"No, I was certainly not!" Ford said, while his cheeks started to turn a deep red colour.

"Are you suuuure? Because to me it looks like you diiiid." she said, a cheeky grin on her face and dragging some of the vowels.

"You are mistaken, dear child. Now, if you'll excuse me, I've got work to do." he excused himself and stood up, holding the notebook close to him.

Without letting her get another word in, he moved past her and made his way into his study.

There, he propped open the notebook to the page he'd just added a new note onto.

- likes to hum when no one is around - seems to prefer more loose fitting clothes. possibly because the don't restrict movement as much - will subconsciously play and fidget with any jewellery they're wearing - sorts and eats their food in a particular order - would rather not eat at all than something not appealing - skin irritating clothing causes great discomfort. remove tags!! - wants to talk but holds back. encouraging them has positive effect - avoids eye contact but will look at faces when the person isn't looking at them - do not touch without warning and do not force contact! expressed great discomfort to me after being forced to physical contact by someone else - repeating phrases and noises (quite endearing) - easily startled by sudden and loud noises, as well as irritated by high pitched ones, almost too quiet to hear - shows behaviours similar to felines. has stated that they would be delighted to posses the ability to purr (he would be delighted too)

Ford smiled as he looked up and leaned back. He really hoped Mabel hadn't seen too much, otherwise she might figure out how interested in you he really was. And we wasn't sure if he was ready for that.

For now he would be very much content continuing to dreamily gaze over at you and notice all the little things, so he could understand you better.

Maybe one day he could work up the courage to ask you out.
