It's funny.
I used to look at her and be happy. I thought I was so lucky to have finally found someone like her. Now that I think about it, I can't recall when I first realized everything was a lie.
Was it when she stopped answering my calls?
Was it when she only asked to ever go to places where I'd have to pay? Was it when our messages became full of things I could buy for her?
Was it the moment I realized her fascination with Taehyung?
Was it the time I saw her walking out of her apartment with a man who wasn't me?
I tilt my head, narrowing my eyes as she takes another bite of her cake.
Now when I look at her I can only see deception. I don't feel anything, I don't feel any desire to be around her. If this was the case, then why did I stay by her side for so long? Why did I put myself through the pain of needing love, but only receiving a lie? Trapped in a mess of my own making, why did I think I could live like this?
"You deserve better."
I take a deep breath as I remember the words Jocelynn said to me the other night. They give me strength, remind me that this is the right thing to do. They reassure me that I'll be alright, that there's nothing to be afraid of.
After all, my happiness is the most important thing.
The woman across from me scoffs as she grows tired of the incessant staring. She fixes me with a cold glare, licking some frosting off of her lips.
"God, Jimin what is it?"
I don't feel upset at her tone, or the way she treats me. It's as though I'm completely numb to it by now. Sooji isn't one to beat around the bush, but she knows how to twist and manipulate things to fit her best perspective. I'll admit it, she is good at what she does, that's for sure.
"Do you love me?"
At the question I can see her eyes visibly widen, the fork dropping from her fingers and onto the half-eaten plate. Amused, I inwardly scoff.
Really, you can do better than that Sooji, I thought you were good at pretending.
She chuckles to herself as she regains her composure, playing off the shock by reaching for her napkin and dabbing at the corners of her mouth.
"Of course I love you. What kind of a ridiculous question is that?"
I narrow my eyes at the response.
"Really," I murmur, leaning forward in my chair.
It was such a ridiculous question, that you had to fumble for an answer.
I wonder, for such a pathological liar, how she can't see that I already know everything. The way she continues to fake everything just to appease my inner desires is amusing at this point. She tries so hard, and yet she can't give me the things I want most.
"The tell me this, what do you love about me?"
I watch as she visibly swallows hard, her eyes shaking in trepidation as she searches for the right response. I smile to myself bitterly, tilting my head as I wait to see what she comes up with next.
Look at her, she can't even meet my eyes.
"What do you mean?"
I nearly scoff as I pull away, running my hands through my hair.
"I knew it."
"Jimin, what's wrong?" She reaches forward, taking my hand within her slender ones. Any sign of her annoyance is gone, now replaced with fake tears and empty pleas. I can't keep back my bitter smirk anymore as I look at her, and what with the way she balks, I can tell that she wasn't expecting this out of me.
Honestly, I gave you so many chances and now that it's ending, this is the best you come up with?
When I snatch my hand out of hers, I can see that she's growing nervous.
Poor baby, your insurance is leaving you.
What will you do now?
"Sooji, are you happy when you're with me?" At her silence, I no longer feel the dejection or sadness I used to feel when I was around her. Now, all I can feel is a fit of burning anger and hatred for her. After everything she's done, after the way she fooled me for so long, this is how she fights to save it? "Or do you only care about what you can get out of me?"
Her smile is weak as she reaches for me once more.
As though her pleas can reach me now.
"Jimin, that's ridiculous, you know how much I care about you."
In her eyes, all I can see is desperation. She knows what I'm trying to do, she knows what this means, and yet she still can't be honest with me. It's as though she refuses to believe her plan has been soiled.
"Do I?" I mutter, meeting those eyes with cold ones of my own.
"I've seen the way you look at Tae when you think I'm not looking. I know that you manipulate me. I understand that I don't satisfy you. I realize that you don't give anything in this relationship, you only take. My money, my time, my love, my compassion, my sanity...but none of it, none of it is real."
Regarding her with a cold stare, I wait to see any sign of regret or remorse. Anything to tell me that she ever loved me, just to make sure I wasn't a complete fool. Just to know that I didn't completely imagine the whole thing.
But soon, it's clear that there's nothing left to protect.
Snatching myself out of her grip, I catch the eye of the waiter and beckon him over, letting him know that we're ready for our check. Sooji looks between me and the waiter as I pull out my wallet, preparing to leave. Frantically she shakes her head, reaching for me even after I pull myself away from her each time.
"What happened to you? This isn't you Jimin." I ignore her, understanding that she's not going to stop until I finally walkout. What exactly is she trying to salvage if there was nothing there in the first place? "Did someone say something to you? Is that why you're acting this way?"
At the question, I immediately go still. A memory of Jocelynn's smiling face and kind eyes come to mind, and I can feel my heart clench in a rage at the insinuation that she was lying to me. Unlike Sooji, Jocelynn was the only one willing to tell me exactly what she thought. She was honest and kind. She understood me when no one else did.
Now you want to play the victim and act like it's someone else's fault?
Now you want to say that they were just painting you in a bad light?
No, you did that on your own.
"If I'm wrong, then please tell me one thing you love about me." I hiss, my eyes narrowing and my heart hardening every second I spend with her. She blinks, surprised I saw through her clever statement. I almost want to laugh. It isn't that surprising, when you manipulate someone for too long, soon they can see straight through it.
I guess I know you better than you think.
"Tell me why you're here by my side."
No reply. Nothing but the frantic panic in her eyes, and the stumped expression on her face.
Nothing.
It was always nothing.
"I knew it," I scoff, standing and turning to the waiter who has reached our table and is now standing awkwardly as he witnesses the situation.
I can understand, if I were him I wouldn't want to be privy to the conversation either. I take the bill out of his hand, signing the check, and placing it inside the small black book before handing it back to him.
As he hurries away, I turn back to Sooji, pocketing my wallet. I note how she watches the wallet like a hawk as it returns to my pocket, and I roll my eyes.
Yeah, take a good look, that was the last of my money you'll ever swindle.
"Sooji, I think we need to break up."
"Break up?!" As I turn to leave, she stands, grabbing me by the arm and holding me back. "Jimin, please don't make any rash decisions, can't you see how much I love you?"
Smirking cruelly, I rip my arm out of her grip, turning and glaring at her with vexation. She swallows hard at the look, and I can't help but feel a bit satisfied. For once, I'm the one who has the upper hand. Now that she no longer has any hold over me, she's irrevocably afraid.
So this is what it takes?
Fine.
"No. I can't." I say bluntly, making sure there is no sign of emotion in my expression or my voice. Trying to prove to her that I no longer want to play the game we started. "I think we've both known for a while now that this isn't love. It's a transaction."
"And what exactly do you think love is?"
She looks at me in earnest, her hands once more finding mine as she tries to appeal to me. Now that her manipulation has failed, she's finally willing to show me something real. It took this much time for her to show me what she wanted.
If I'm being really honest, was I expecting anything different?
But it was too perfect, so much so that it was flawed.
"Love isn't like a romance, it's not a fairy tale. You love another person by telling them what they want to hear. Giving them what they expect from you. And if they're pleased then they'll give you what you want in return. All love is meant to be is a transaction." So this was it, this was what she used to convince herself that what she was doing to me was okay. This was what she told herself at night when she was sleeping next to someone else. This was how she believed she was the one in the right.
"Don't you see? Isn't that what we've been doing all along? Haven't I given you what you wanted?" Maybe in the beginning. That's what you gave me. You gave me happiness and security. A fairy tale I had dreamed of. And it was a perfect fairy tale, a beautiful one.
Yes, it was beautiful, but that's all it was meant to be.
A beautiful illusion.
"That's not the kind of relationship I want," I answer her, pulling my hands out of her grip. "And you shouldn't want it either."
I can feel her frustration grow as all of her plans are being burned and tossed away. As her future crumbles before her, as she loses what she worked so hard to gain. But this time, I don't care, because this is no longer a future I wish to be a part of.
"Don't do this Jimin, you'll regret it." She warns, and I scoff, tilting my head at the crazy assumption.
She chose this as her next alternative?
Just how far have you fallen Sooji?
This is the best you can do?
"No, I don't think I will. Goodbye Sooji."
Turning on my heel, I walk away from her, nodding to the bodyguard that waits for me at the corner of the restaurant. She's growing more desperate, I can tell as her eyes dart between me and the guard, as the path between us grows farther apart, as she begins to realize that this is happening.
I probably should have expected what was coming next. I probably should have known she wouldn't give up that easily. An animal whose backed into a corner doesn't just hide its claws and bow down to the authority. It bares its fangs and prepares to fight for its freedom.
In likeness, Sooji does the same.
"If you leave me now, there will be no one left who will love you! No one will want you, or the scars and baggage that comes with you. Do you think anyone will want to stay when they see how you really are?! When they witness every insecurity?! Do you believe anyone will want a coward, a leech, a spineless fool like you?!"
Though I know the words are said out of desperation, though I know not to put much trust in what she says, though I know they're another form of manipulation, I can't help it; they affect me. They're everything I've said to myself in my self-hatred, they're everything I never wanted anyone to know about me. They're meant to cut deep, they're meant to break me down until I come running back to her.
And it's working.
"Who else will love you but for me?! I accepted you even when you didn't deserve to be accepted, I was there for you when you needed someone by your side. Even though you didn't deserve all I gave, you still received it because that was our agreement. Why does it matter if it was real or not?! I gave you comfort when you wanted, I gave you a warm body to sleep beside when you were feeling lonely, I gave you company when there was no one left to stay by you."
I can spot all the flaws in what she says, I know how twisted her words are, I know that this isn't a healthy relationship and I should leave. However, I can't help but find some truth in it. I can't help but start to sway back to her side, regret what I've done up till now. I clench my fist tightly, as though that would block out the words, as though that can build up my resolve.
"You are nothing, Park Jimin, and yet I stayed. You know it's true, you know there wasn't anything to keep me, and yet you believed every lie, every facade because you were desperate for love. I'll give it to you, I'll give you everything you need, I'll provide that for you. No one else can do that. No one else is there for you. No one else will love you, so I'll fill that void."
She knows it's working, that's why her voice is becoming smoother, her words calmer, her sentences well thought out. Things are turning back to how they were before. Things are repairing just as easily as they were broken.
I bite my bottom lip, fighting against my mind, ignoring the thoughts that want to give in to her. Refusing to acknowledge that there's still a part of me who is wrapped around her finger, ready to run back to her whenever she calls for me.
"Who else will do this for you? Who else will love you the way I do?"
"You deserve to be loved."
Her voice sounds in my ears almost as though she were there right beside me. They warm y heart and fill me with strength and assurance. With Jocelynn's gentle reminder, my fist releases, the leash Sooji had around me finally breaking with a resounding snap as I turn back to her. She can see in my eyes that there's no hope, that her final technique has been broken, that I am no longer hers.
Her web has finally snapped and her prey has escaped, never to return.
"No one will," I answer in response to her rhetorical question, and I smile when Sooji's face finally turns to something real. A hideous look of anger and frustration, as she realizes there is no longer any need to pretend around me.
At least in our final moments, I was able to see her in her natural state.
"I hope no one ever loves me the way that you did."
Turning away, I leave her behind. Though she may scream obscenities at me, though she's probably wishing I die right then and there, I don't care. Her voice drowns out the minute I turn my back on her, her existence fading away, turning into no one more than someone I used to know. And for the first time, a truth rings brightly in my mind, an assurance that I can be strong. A reminder that I am worth more than I think.
For the first time in a long time, I am free.
