Dieting Myth: "if you diet too long your 'metabolism' will slow down"
Now it *is* true that if you go on a diet and lose 30lbs (and don't change your activity level) you'll find you burn fewer calories daily. But, I think people are overlooking the obvious reason why. Imagine carrying a 30 pound weight around all day. That'd be like... well, it's extra exercise.
The main reason you need fewer calories after loosing weight is because you weigh less. But this isn't the only factor at play.
The human body is very adaptable and only maintains just enough muscle mass to accomplish the tasks that you do regularly. "Use it or loose it" is very real.
I learned this lesson the hard way after spending 3 weeks confined to a bed due to a very bad leg fracture two years ago. After just three weeks not using my legs nearly all the muscle was gone. The first time I tried to stand with assistance I passed out! Blacked right out like a 19th century lady on a fainting couch.
I was appalled and impressed at how quickly my body had determined that all my leg muscle wasn't needed. This also happens when you lose weight. If you weigh less you need less muscle to move your body. So your muscle mass will decrease.
The major players that determine how many calories you burn each day are:
weight
muscle mass
activity level
Any diet will reduce the first two if you don't change the last one. That's the main reason people report "metabolism slowing"
There is a fourth effect. But it only applies to extreme diets. If your diet is too strict it will make you tired. You won't want to move very much. You will fidget less, get up less often. All three categories end up decreased. But, a diet so strict it makes you tired probably isn't healthy. Extreme low calories will also starve your brain of sugar, which you need to be able to think. Your thinking will be cloudy and you probably will even lack the energy to think very hard about anything.
You have to still live while you are on a diet. (For those with EDs, this right here could be your "problem" you aren't even eating enough to keep going day to day. And I know just saying it isn't going to cure your ED, but you don't deserve to be treated so badly and should stop treating yourself so badly. Or at least understand the real reason why you can't make the number go down anymore. You are dying. I hope your thinking isn't too cloudy to notice. Seriously.)
There also probably are differences in metabolism related to how the body uses calories, that vary from person to person & can change over your life. This is what most people think "slowed metabolism" means. A change in the fundamental efficiency of the body. But this really isn't the *main* factor in why people who loose weight end up discovering they don't need to eat as much to stay at their new weight. If you run the numbers on muscle mass, weight etc... it tends to explain everything.
Happily, if you have lost weight becoming more active can be easier. (depends on where you start and end, naturally) Really, this is one of the few good reasons to decide to loose weight (provided you can do so safely) IMO.

I hate people who start showing up going “oh but fast metabolism is so bad you don’t want it” when a person talks about wanting it due to being overweight and insecurities. Like first of all, not everyone with fast metabolism is like that. Second of all, you probably have never experience the genuine feeling of anguish whenever you looked at yourself in a mirror and saw how fat you are. You don’t know what it’s like to eat then feel so horribly sick the point of wanting to puke or stop eating because of your weight. You probably don’t know how badly you wished you looked skinny so that your right clothes would fit better and didn’t highlight every fat that’s hanging off you. You probably never felt wished that you could grab a knife and cut off your own stomach so you could be skinny. You probably have never tried to force yourself into starvation so you could lose some weight.
Stop making it about yourselves. You wouldn’t like it if someone showed up under ur comments saying “oh u don’t want slow metabolism bla bla bla.”
Let us speak about how horrible we feel.
Like unless it’s stated you can talk about your experience, do NOT go under someone’s posts who clearly is insecure with their weight and wished for fast metabolism and say “no u don’t want it” who are you to decide what they want? Please be respectful.
(Some of the things mentioned are coming from experience as a plus size girl with slow metabolism.)

I love how people be like...
Person: You're not fat!
Me: Well, I'm not skinny.
Person: ...
Like be frrr please 😭 Can we normalize having slow metabolism? So many people have fast metabolism that people overlook those with slow metabolism, which literally makes losing weight nearly impossibleeee.

If you're a cancer survivor, there is a side effect of treatment that many people are not aware of.
And, the side effect that I often think is the change that has taken place to my hormones, leading to weight gain.
I follow a few tags here on Tumblr that pertain to weight loss and working out because I love being inspired by others. But, it is disheartening seeing ED content.
I can say that in the past year, I have tried losing weight in unhealthy ways to no avail.
What actually helps me lose weight after chemo and being on Prednisone (a steroid) is lifting weights, walking, swimming, and going on the stair machine at the gym. I also had an active job this year too, which involved me working in a very fast-paced role.
Yes, it turns out that working out and moving around a lot throughout the day burns a lot of calories. I also try to limit my sugar and keep a rough estimate of how many calories I'm consuming at a healthy amount.
As a short woman (5'3), I limit my calories to about 2,000 a day, and try to burn about 300 or more calories through walking and working.
This has helped me way more than restricting and being on a strict diet. I eat what I want within reason and enjoy my life. I try not to stress out over food, but I still eat mainly healthy, whole foods.
I see ED posts on here about girls who cry because their moms made them dinner. That is just so sad.
We are here to love life and enjoy food. Our experiences are a blessing.
In conclusion, my hormones have changed a lot since chemo. And, being active and eating healthy is the only thing that allows me to lose weight. Restriction does not work with my current metabolism at all!

Breaking the Under-Eating Cycle: Strategies for Sustainable Caloric Increase
So, I think I have been under-eating. Consuming no carbs and getting plenty of protein and fat is so satisfying that I am rarely hungry. However, I need to eat more! According to the app I’m using to track my macros, my current weight indicates that I need to consume around 2763 calories daily, and that’s a -14% deficit to reach my goal weight sometime next year. At most, I have only been…

You know what’s even better than waking up with a certain someone absolutely annihilating your notifications with likes? When they escalate to a full-blown reblog spree.
#is rare when this happens but hoooo boy WHEN IT HAPPENDS#I’M BITING THE PILLOW SWIRLING MY HAIR BITING MY FOOT NAILS#like I like to pretend that I’m weak to validation and like come on#we are on tumblr. in this hellsite getting more than a thousand notes is equally as rare as popping 3 times in a day#so actually achieving this feels like a milestone or something#I guess this is the equivalent of ao3 writers receiving the ultimate combo of a hit + kudo + comment + bookmark all by the same person#side thought: are there real people who daily popped 3 times a day? my slow metabolism can’t comprehend how this would be possible

I’m pregnant AGAIN!
This is the QUICKEST I’ve gotten pregnant since Niran and I began quivering. I must be doing something to make God EXTREMELY pleased with me! I’m dressed in athletic clothes because after I finish this post I’m going on a BRISK WALK with my hubby. Too many women use having children as an EXCUSE to let themselves go. Then these women have the AUDACITY to wonder why their husbands may start to look elsewhere. It’s very easy to maintain a trim figure, ladies! Don’t be lazy!
All the best, Jamilah <3

fwiw my physiotherapist told me that people with eds apparently metabolise things faster than other people, so your fast metabolisation of medications/caffeine/etc could be in part linked to that?
yes people with EDS (and other forms of chronic pain) are highly likely to have the abnormal liver enzyme thing
we don't really know *why* but it's just. a thing.
#it's why loads of us are resistant to local anaesthetic also#something like 80% of chronic pain sufferers have at least one abnormality on the P450 cytochrome#around 30% have more than one#the most common (for us) is CYP2D6 which is the one responsible for - among other things - anaesthetic and most psychiatric medication#caffeine is CYP3A4#my 2D6 and 3A4 are for sure extremely overachieving#i have my suspicions about 2C9#incidentally CBD is a potent inhibitor of 2D6 - meaning it will slow the metabolism and 'make things work better'#which may go some way to explaining the popularity of CBD among chronic pain folks#bupropion (wellbutrin) does the same thing which is why i'm prescribed it lmao#taking wellbutrin to make my liver talk to amphetamine

i don’t want to deprive myself of food anymore
#i’ve been on and off relapsing but i’m starting to realize how irrational my thoughts are around food and my body#my body dysmorphia is awful and i know realistically i don’t need to lose weight and that starving myself will only slow down my metabolism#so losing weight would be for nothing cuz i’d gain that shit back after eating a healthy amount of calories again 💀#besides purging gives me so much acne#i still feel insanely ugly but this is so unrealistic be so fr

@thedenofravenpuff you are correct!
Though he doesn't hunt animals (heck even bugs he'll only eat if they happen to be in very close proximity to him) but he will scavenge any corpses he happens across if he's hungry enough. Otherwise he'll bury them and plant a little seed (usually a tree one) in the mound
#questions and answers#thedenofravenpuff#fnaf jack o moon#he has a pretty slow metabolism so insects and plants are usually enough to sustain him for good periods of time#it would be around autumn that he'd be more likely to scavenge carrion#so he has plenty of energy stored for winter
