I love when callbacks/references are subtle
In the episode "Sarek" of the 3rd season of TNG, Riker and Picard are commenting on some of Ambassador Sarek's achievements, and, along with some other missions, they mentioned the "Coridan admission into the Federation"
This discussion was the reason that Sarek was on the Enterprise in the season 2 episode "Journey to Bable" of TOS!
It's cool to have something that's recognizable and yet doesn't feel cheap or in your face (in my opinion)
And it's also something that the characters could feasibly know and talk about, because it would have some relevance to the Federation and to the people in Starfleet

Oh no, my wonder is not "childlike." My whimsy is old. My frivolity is steeped in ancient wisdom.
