@philosophicalparadox it's in the novel too actually, not just anime filler! I was not exaggerating at all I'm referencing the scene in the itachi novel where itachi just. Silently seethes over mean rumors he hears about Kakashi lol. They don't have a whole bunch of scenes together, but what they do have is so sweet and sickening and kakashi is trying SO hard in the rare moments neither he nor itachi is dissociating. Why are they child solders. They should be the weird kids that join the same knitting circle to cope with ptsd and then become friends by virtue of being the only people younger then 60 there and they've got like zero social battery so they sit together and quietly parralel play making clothes for Sasuke and Naruto ehile the little old ladies gossip over them and occasionally pull them over to teach them a new pattern. Itachi is like. One of the only people I genuinely believes Kakashi is cool. He is sooooo 11 years old =(

Thinking eternally about how Kakashi is the first and ONLY authority figure in Itachi's LIFE who doesn't have an underlying agenda when interacting with him. Thinking about how Danzo literally put them on a team together because he thought that they were both heartless little tools that would work ruthlessly together but instead Itachi admired how Kakashi never said a rude word about ANY commrade no matter how horrid they were to him. Thinking about the like four months where Itachi is on team Ro and has a little bit of breathing room to maybe perhaps be comfortable in the presence of someone with any degree of control over him, something he hasn't had since he was. Literally four. Thinking about Kakashi being exactly 20 years old and has always been the baby of just about ever social group until he had two traumatized teenagers foisted upon his ANBU team and he just had to be normal about that. Thinking about how Kakashi just hoped that Anbu would 'become a place of pride' for Itachi, cause what else do you say to soften the blow of being an elite assassin at age 11? ETERNALLY thinking about how CANNONICALLY in anbu if someone is talking shit on Kakashi's name then Itachi (11) (creepy as all hell 0.0 ) (half your height and CAN kick your ass) will just give them the most bewildered look in the world and call them all mean jealous losers in his head. THINK.ING.

he definitely already recognises he has Feelings with a capital F. he's a smart boy and unlike the other two he is pretty emotionally available. but he doesn't want to reveal his Feelings just yet because circumstances are tricky, and he doesn't want to go through all the emotions of a big confession just to not be able to pursue a relationship with you

side note this is ANBU shisui. so he's pretty busy and just casually risking his life on the regular. tbh you're also probably in ANBU and that's how you guys get to know each other so well

anyway he's been sitting on these Feelings for a while. and he knows you like him too. he knows. he indulges in some lowkey flirting from time to time, but he also tries to maintain some level of professional distance

and then you save his life and he's SCREWED

you're both assigned to the same mission and spend the entire time dancing around flirting/not flirting, trying to hide it from your teammates, just generally having to try really hard not to distract each other too much. then there's an ambush on your squad and shit gets kinda crazy

shisui probably exhausts himself a bit protecting the entire squad and manages to get himself knocked flat on his ass. there's an enemy stood over him and he's out of kunai and his chakra is depleted and he thinks well, that's that and then you're cutting down the enemy out of nowhere

he stares up at you like an idiot lol. you look like shit, you're covered in blood and your headband is lopsided. and he thinks you're the most beautiful thing he's ever seen

in that moment he just realises how much he trusts you, and how well you guys work together. he can't stop thinking about it long after you guys get back to the village. he's literally dreaming about it. and after a few days he's like. this is love ig. wow.

shisui won't keep it from you for long. he thinks you deserve to know, even if it changes your dynamic as teammates. capital F Feelings are one thing but love is too important to hide. he might try to keep it professional (mutual pining?!?!??!), but I also see him going for a relationship here, even if you have to hide it from your superiors. and let's be real a secret relationship with shisui. it's hot

see now kakashi. he knows he has feelings. but he won't admit it to himself. he says no thank you not today. he's so stupid lol he thinks if he ignores it then it'll go away

he can't really keep himself away from you though. he wants to distance himself and that's his first instinct, but he literally just can't do it. he keeps finding himself wandering into your path, or just happening to train at the same time as you, or listening more intently when a mutual friend mentions your name

and the whole damn time he's like ah yes this is normal friendship. you probably don't realise anything is going on with him though, because kakashi is just weird in general. he does all this strange shit and no one questions it. you encounter him in the makeup aisle of a store on the other side of town from where he lives, and he thinks the jig is up, but you literally just assume he's doing Kakashi Things. and he thinks he's so slick

when it does finally hit him though, it hits him HARD. I see him finally realising he's in love in a very random, domestic moment

okok I've got it. he's back from a pretty tiring mission and he just instantly wipes out in his apartment as usual, doesn't bother getting groceries or anything. he figures he can survive off the food pills in the cupboard for a few days until he has the energy to grocery shop

then you just.....show up at his apartment??? carrying grocery bags?? and start putting food in his fridge????

kakashi doesn't really know how to react to this, but he feels bad just standing there, so he kinda sheepishly shuffles over and starts helping you put the groceries away. and it's nice. this is when he realises

literally drops whatever he's holding. this is a big oh shit moment for him. he lowkey really panics, he has no idea what he's supposed to do with these feelings, it's the dreaded L Word and that's scary as hell. he goes super quiet and avoids eye contact bc he's convinced you're going to read his mind

and of course you think this is Kakashi Things yet again. he's just weird. even over the next few weeks when he starts acting REALLY strange - avoiding you like the plague one day, attached to your hip the next - you don't think much of it. and this makes it sooooo much worse for him lol. he's never going to confess on his own

it's honestly torture for him. he's losing sleep over this. kakashi hatake??? in.... LOVE???? impossible

please please please just let one of your mutual friends intervene. hopefully he (drunkenly) confesses to someone, and they're able to pull some strings to force you to talk to each other. he may literally pass out when he has to confess to you, but just roll with it

oh god it's so cliche for tobirama but I have to do it. ENEMIES TO LOVERS

like look at him. he's so smug. he has a lot of pride, so he's pretty likely to end up having some kind of political/ideological rivalry with you. maybe you tend to very vocally disagree with his ideas for the village or strategies for missions. and it annoys him so much, especially because you're articulate and convincing with your points

so he's in this weird position where he has respect for you and your intelligence..... but you also infuriate him to no end. over time, he starts to dwell on your encounters more and more - he thinks about them even when he's training, or relaxing at home, or away on a mission. and this just pisses him off more bc he literally cannot get a moment's peace from you

hashirama notices this WELL before tobirama does. and it makes him all giddy and excited bc he knows what it means, but he doesn't want to ruin the surprise for tobirama lol

honestly it gets to the point where he will ignore everyone else in the room just to debate with you. it's at this point that he starts to realise he's got strong emotions towards you, but he kind of just brushes it off as a rivalry. he definitely doesn't even consider the possibility that they're romantic feelings

tbh. you're going to have to be the one to make the first move. unfortunately for you, tobirama is hot AND irritating, so he's going to get under your skin just as much as you get under his. it probably ends up with a pretty heated confrontation at some point

lets say you've had a pretty big disagreement at a meeting, and he ended up getting his way with the rest of the council. so you storm into his office later that day to chew him out. and tobirama is in one of his smug asshole moods bc he 'won', which means he's just smirking at you. and this is the moment ok just kiss him. wipe the smug look off his face

it takes him a few seconds to react, but he definitely pushes you off and orders you out of his office. at first he's absolutely furious, but then he realises a few days later that he can't stop thinking about the kiss, and not necessarily in a bad way. he finds himself wishing he'd kissed you back, even if just out of curiosity

BUT tobirama is stubborn so he won't admit that to you. he waits until he gets an opportunity to come argue with you, then seeks you out, and tries to goad you into kissing him again. hopefully he manages to piss you off enough to make you do it. because it's GOOD

he can't help but kiss you hard. probably pulls you into him by the jaw, wraps his other arm around your waist, won't let you go. don't wanna get too saucy here but I wouldn't be surprised if this gets a little steamy before he stops himself. he gets lost in the moment

then he pushes you off AGAIN lol it's so frustrating. this time it's bc he's like oh fuck. fuck. this is more than a rivalry

it's gonna end up a game of cat and mouse tbh. neither of you want to admit the depth of your feelings, but you also can't stay away from each other

I think an often overlooked, but glaring sign of Obito, Madara etc. being right about Konoha being a sleazy shit show, is Itachi's ANBU recruitment. And I don't even mean the part where they groomed an 11-year-old child to join an assassination squad, then changed his official age to make it more palatable.

I mean his entrance exam, the assassination of Mukai Kohinata. Kohinata was said to be a capable and respected ninja, but caught selling Konoha secrets to Kirigakure and to be eliminated. When confronted by a very upset Itachi and Shisui, he explained that he needed the money because he had a sick child. The boys killed him.

Okay, so riddle me this: how come a "respected Konoha ninja" has to pay for his sick child's treatment out of pocket, and so much that he has to risk his life spying on his own village? Clearly, Konoha's appreciation for its ninjas is pure lip service.

Shisui was one of Akami's first childhood friends and later her first lil love. She goes w Shisui to meet Sasuke when she’s 13yr, he’s only a few weeks old but the second she holds him and his chubby baby hand swipes her chin she falls in love. Bc of her relationship with Shisui Akami spends more and more time around Sasuke— he’d be tagging along after the big kids, but she always made time for him. Even if it was 20 extra minutes before a mission or after a long day of training, she’d hide her injuries and play with him instead. She’s one of many Anbu called to the scene the night of the Uchiha massacre. The second she found him all alone she knew she was taking him home and she quit Anbu that night.  Akami never felt heard or seen as a child so she tries her best to make sure that Sasuke has a voice. She didn’t intend to take on a parental role; it just happened over the years. She’s always open about his family and ready to listen when he confides in her, she teaches him every single uchiha jutsu she knows (and eventually kakashi does too) so Sasuke can still feel connected to his Clan. She gets him through his nightmares and defends him tooth and nail, she teaches him how to cook and use a sword. No matter what, he's always gonna be her baby and she’ll be his Kami-chan. There is nothing she wouldn’t do for him.  Akami and Kakashi knew each other as kids, they did not get along until their traumas sort of forced them to see eye to eye and rely on each other.  But it wasn’t a friendship until their early-mid teens, even then it always felt like more. Shortly after she takes in Sasuke they start a tumultuous FWB only to realize they very obviously love each other. Sasuke approves bc Kakashi makes Akami happy and is always there for her (for better or worse) and Kakashi and Sasuke start to have a very meaningful connection well before he becomes his sensei.  Yes parent squad ! Sasuke deserves the world and I love that you love him too!!<3 In ATLA Akami would be a water bender, she’s a descendant of the Yuki clan so it just seems fitting for her heritage! Tho I’d be wary of her healing abilities, she’s more of a fighter and I would not put it past her to learn how to blood bend! (She was Anbu Root for a reason💀)  Sasuke is fire bb! Kakashi I go back and forth on but I think he would be fire too .I love love love love ATLA and have tried to make an au for her but I find it hard to imagine Akami interacting w the gang (They all just feel so young lol- though she’d probably like Suki and Zuko best) I think that she would get along really well with Piandao! Thanks for getting back to me! I think he certainly had a little pre-teen crush on Kakashi, he and Shisui had this 'us against the world lean on each other' mutual pining thing and Kisame was his most consistent and persistent one on one male influence in his life.

Now picture he's now a young Lan. Going about his days, he's half living his life like a vacation with his cute baby brother and half running his sect and building a pseudo spy ring/information market. (Nothing too impressive, just a few dozen informants in the other sects and spread evenly in all the red light districts between Cloud Recesses and the Nightless City)

And then he's introduced to Nie Mingjue

And Nie Mingjue is the rockin' hard bod and unshakable honesty of Kisame. The overwhelming skill and might of Kakashi and Shisui's unflinching loyalty not so much to a cause but to his loved ones.

And also the muscles. Those chiseled, glistening muscles and those cut from granite eyes and those deceptively gentle but calloused hands.

And how he treats his brother and his duties as a sect leader?

Que little Lan Zhan worriedly asking his brother if he is sick because Itachi has gone glassy eyed, flushed in the face, and breathing rapidly.

This startles Itachi who realizes he had been staring at Nie Mingjue training for the past half hour lol

Another reason as to why Itachi falls for Nie Mingjue is because Nie Mingjue is blunt, direct, honest. There's no self-guessing what Nie Mingjue really meant, no need to look for the underneath of the underneath. Nie Mingjue is predictable with how rigidly he adheres to his personal moral code and yet Itachi is still struck by just how unfiltered and honest Nie Mingjue is, even while playing sect politics. (Kisame was honest, but not that honest.)

Itachi is tired of political backstabbing and manipulation.

Also, I imagine Itachi... kind of sucks at politics. His solution to everything is murder: murder his clan to protect his brother, solve his brother's trauma by letting his brother murder him, etc. Nie Mingjue's reaction to the Wen Clan is thus *chef kiss*. Yup, just murder the whole clan - that fits right in with Itachi's personal solution to... pretty much everything. (Also, what else do you expect when this barely teenager gets through into ANBU which is an assassination squad? And then Itachi gets thrown into the Akatsuki which does a lot of killing too...)

Like yeah, sure, Itachi is a pacifist, but pacifist means something very very different in ninja terms than, well, what we have.

(It would be really fucking hilarious and sad if Itachi's little PTSD episode gets mistaken as him being lovestruck. Nah, it's just that Nie Mingjue sometimes does something that causes one of Itachi's old memories to pop up and Itachi gets up... not really dissociating but rather living in his memories again. For better or for worse.)

I've been OBSESSING with team ro this past week because of the potential it has of turning Kakashi's life into more of the tragedy it already is.

Imagine, team Ro becoming Kakashi's found family. He doesn't want it to, but after Tenzo joins he just can't help himself and starts to care deeply. And his team cares back, they adore their captain, and start fights with whoever badmouths him. Which happens often because Kakashi has a reputation of being insufferable, cold, of killing his teammates.

One time someone says that Kakashi ripped Obito's eye off and killed the boy himself and Shisui breaks their clavicle.

Imagine them sneaking into Kakashi's apartment because they can't handle a particular nightmare and feel eyes on their back no matter where they go. And they know Kakashi's safe, they know he'd die in a heartbeat for any of them, that he'll always go back for them, that they aren't expendable to him.

And Kakashi is 17 to 20 during this time, he's younger than a few members of his team and barely older than others. And he loves them, but he's crumbling under the responsibility that comes along being loved and trusted, of being the only one willing to put himself between his team and certain death. And yet, he feels he is doing good, he is keeping them safe and whole and—

And Shisui kills himself, and Kakashi doesn't understand why, what did he miss? This is the second time he misses the signs, and this time it was his responsibility. He is a failure as son, a student, a teammate and as a captain.

Itachi is avoiding him, he probably blames him too.

Yugao and Tenzou still look at him like he hung the Moon and stars and that's somehow worse.

And one day Itachi snaps and murders his entire clan, and Kakashi looks back to every interaction he had with the boy, and wonders why, why, why. What didn't he see?

He trained Itachi, the boy was already a sharp weapon when he joined his team but Kakashi sharpened it even further, he taught him how to fight multiple opponents compensating for his poor stamina. He taught him every fire nature jursu he knew. He taught him how to use a tanto the same way Sakumo had taught him.

Kakashi has experienced lost, and loathing (from himself and others), and regret, and helplessness, and grief and guilt, but nothing prepared him for the feeling of betrayal.

And now Sasuke Uchiha is an orphan, and it's all Kakashi's fault.

And suddenly he is 14 again and trying to lose his life by the enemy's blade..

And once he is out of ANBU and in the Jounin corps again as a teacher candidate, the old members of his squad start dying one after the other until there's only a handful left, too used to someone caring for them and watching their back, used to the certainty that someone will always come for them.

And it's all Kakashi's fault. He isn't there anymore.

I'm rambling but I have to say it again for people in the back. Is there anyone in the naruto fandom who can answer this simple question :

how come Konoha can't deal the threatening Uchiha's rebellion, but Itachi can?

Let me reformulate : How come Konoha one of the most powerful village composed of :

the jonins : highly experienced and highly skilled shinobis who serve as military captains.

the Anbu : short for Ansatsu Senjutsu Tokushu Butai, Special Assassination and Tactical Squad. Their skills is in their name.

Torture and Interrogation force: Yes. It exists, although Konoha is I've heard a peaceful village of milk and honey.

Root : secret service in Anbu, infiltration, assasination, act of terrorism for Konoha's sake.

The Hokage and his council : head of the village with large influence inside and outside the country

all these people are coming from different clans, who get use to work in team and to combine different jutsu since childhood, some are even war veterans, who knows strategy to avoid the sharingan (because they live next to/work with the Uchihas), who went so far to infiltrate their secret meeting, and already knows about the secret coup which is not secret anymore thanks to Shisui and Itachi. You tell me this elite is HELPLESS again Fukagu and his men? But Itachi at 13 years old can stop the most dangerous civil war of all time on his own?? Are Uchihas extremely dangerous or are they so weak they can be easily handle by an adult (Obito) and a child ? Think about it, make your own conclusion.

She's using a new brand of soap.

Not, Shisui thinks, that he'd noticed, or anything. It's simply hard to ignore, the fresh smell of citrus coming off of her sheets; something starkly different and new to the last time he'd been in her home. Their home, once. It would seem that Akari's been taking the whole fresh start thing seriously. He'd only swung by to pick up a few things left behind after he'd moved back to the Uchiha compound - a couple of shirts and the odd kunai left laying around. Well, the first couple times, at least; he hadn't wanted to bother her, not after they'd split the way they had. He knew the lock on the window in the living room was broken, so he'd done the mature thing and snuck in when he knew she'd be off on a mission. It was to save them both the awkwardness that would inevitably arise, being in close and intimate quarters after calling off their wedding. Really, she'd be thanking him if she knew.

Only - he didn't really stop.

Sometimes, it was nice to be surrounded by her again. The same clothes in the half-empty closet, the same crack in the corner of the bathroom mirror. It was difficult for him to see the place as anything other than theirs, so it was nice to pretend for a little bit that everything was normal, was right.

And then she changed her fucking soap.

Akari had never deviated from that sort of routine, so why was she suddenly changing things? Shisui stood in her bathroom, brows furrowed as he stared down the brightly-coloured bottle in her shower. Did she know he was clinging to her, even something as small as her familiar scent? She should smell like mint and something vaguely dusty, like the pages of a book. Not citrus and pine. He'd stolen one of her shirts, when he'd first noticed the change; keeping it shoved under his pillow so he could fall asleep and dream of her. More and more he'd drop by her place in secret, and more and more of her would slip away.

Why did she change her soap?

It drives him absolutely insane, and every time he sees that now-familiar bright bottle in the shop he has to resist the urge to throw the damn thing. Why the change? Why now? Was she trying to catch someone's attention? The thought spurs him to further downward spirals, imagining someone else's hands running over her curves and inhaling deep of her scent; he finds a small comfort in the thought that it isn't her true scent, not really. She's always smelled like petrichor and mint, and no one else would ever know that except him.

The idea drives him to her darkened home once more, and he searches every inch. She's beautiful, and she's free, he thinks with no small amount of bitterness. Of course they'd be lining the block to fuck her. Shisui snarls to himself as he rips her clothes from the half-empty closet, sharingan looking for any sign of something unfamiliar. But there is nothing, and he breathes a sigh of relief. He knicks a pair of her panties from the second drawer as a reward to himself, for going to such lengths to make sure she's safe.

If only he'd remembered to put the clothes from the closet back.

Shisui doesn't return to her apartment after that. He bides his time, losing himself in the smell of her shirt and watching her when she walks through the village, her smile strained next to the easy grins of her ANBU squad.

He wants to go to her, so bad it aches; but he needs to make sure she's learned from what she'd done. That life apart from him is only a waste of time, that calling off their wedding was such an incredibly stupid move. Shisui wants nothing more than to grab her by the shoulders and shake her until she realizes how she'd broken his heart, and make her understand, truly understand that they belong together.

But he's generous. He'll let her realize on her own that she needs him, and when her smile fully disappears then. Then he'll go to her and hold her until bruises bloom on her skin, and love her until they both taste iron.

He's close to the breaking point when she rushes past him on the rooftops, her sash and hair flying behind her. He's on his way to visit Itachi and find some distraction from her, and it's almost as if the vixen knew exactly what he had been planning. She comes close enough that he can smell her soap as she runs past, head tilted to the side and the smallest inclination of her chin in acknowledgement.

It's euphoric. Shisui had been terrified she'd moved on completely, that he'd have to find a way to remind her that they belong together. But he knows his girl, and even if she needed some time and space to figure herself out, well. It's inevitable, that she'll come back.

Shisui's so elated that he's late to see Itachi. Instead of continuing on he'd turned back around, high on the feeling of her eyes on him and the surety that she wanted him too. He'd thrown himself into his bed and wrapped a fist around his cock, stolen panties pressed to his nose and her name on his lips as he'd shuddered and fallen apart.

He'd grinned to himself in the dark as he mopped up his mess with the slip of silken fabric. Plans already half-formed in his head - maybe he'd leave some flowers on her bed for her to find, or maybe hide one of his shirts in her closet, to remind her who she belongs to - with. Who she belongs with.

He catches himself before he can get too carried away. She'd broken his heart, after all - she needs to understand what she did, first and foremost. Shisui takes a deep breath as he locks up his apartment, smile still curving his lips as he remembers the way she had smelled more like mint than citrus on the rooftop.

And then, impossibly - she comes to him.

It's fate. Or destiny. But Akari knocks on his door in the early morning of a quiet Sunday and he'll never forget the sight of her, hands shoved into her pockets and wind teasing at her hair. She smiles, when he opens the door, and Shisui knows without any shadow of a doubt that she's come back to him.

"I can't stay," Akari says with an apologetic lilt to her tone before he can even greet her. And Shisui smiles, because that's okay; even if it takes years for her to warm back up and realize there's no one else who could love her like he can - he's patient, and you can't rush these things.

"I was just wondering if you'd been back to the apartment recently? I think someone broke in, but I wanted to check out every possibility first."

Shisui's stomach drops somewhere near his knees. The torn apart closet, he remembers vividly; he'd been too lost in his outrage at the thought that someone had been hanging around his girl that he didn't clean up his mess. He swallows thickly, offering her a weak laugh and a shrug of his shoulders.

"I was there a few weeks ago, picking up stuff I forgot when I moved out. Didn't wanna make things weird, so I swung by when you were out. I haven't been back since."

A lie. He'd never lied to her before, not about anything important. But he can't tell her, not yet; she wouldn't understand that he'd been doing what was best for her, making sure no one was taking advantage of her. She'd understand, surely, once she was back in his arms.

Akari nods at his words, looking strangely troubled. That raises his hackles, just a bit; if she thinks someone broke in, then surely she knows he's the only one who can keep her safe? But she doesn't ask, and he has to bite his tongue before he can offer. Akari has to be the one to say the words; she has to learn her lesson and remember that he loves her like no one else, and when she's ready she'll come back to him, tears in her eyes and heart on her sleeve and he'll keep her pinned to his bed so she fucking remembers who she belongs to.

"I've gotta run," Akari interrupts his thoughts with a shrug, though her smile sends a jolt of awareness through his spine. "I'll see you around, yeah?" Akari says with a small wave, before turning on her heel and making her way down the street.

I'll see you around. Shisui's stomach clenches as he fights the urge to grin. A promise. A salvation. She'll come back to him. He just has to be patient, but soon enough she'll remember that she belongs to him and no one else, and he'll drown her in his affections and claim her for the whole village to see. She'll wear the Uchiha crest on her back and smell like mint and everything will be right once again. He just has to be patient.

Akari had forgotten who she belongs to, wedding or no. She'd been playing with his feelings this whole time, smiling prettily and coming to his house and giving him hope that she'd come back to him. And there she was, hanging off the arm of Obito and laughing as though she hadn't just ruined everything.  Shisui's vision is awash in red at the sight, sharingan activating without him realizing as he watches them walk out of a restaurant together.

She's so brazen that she might as well be fucking him right in the middle of the street, the way her hand is curved over his elbow and the laughter she buries in his bicep. Obito is no better, leaning down to whisper something against her hair that makes her roll her eyes, the pair of them smiling as they meander down the lane.

Shisui shunshins out of instinct, pulse thundering in his ears and hands curled into tight fists. There's the burn of unshed tears in the back of his throat, but he swallows it down; he won't let her hurt him, not again.

When he ends up back in Akari's apartment, his old apartment, well. It's fate, really. Shisui's breathing is heavy as he moves to sit on her bed, his bed, their bed. He'll wait for her, he decides with a growing tightness in his chest. He'll wait until she's back from fucking someone else, and then he will remind her who she belongs to. He'll show her what happens to bad girls who break his heart, and then maybe. Just maybe. He'll let her apologize.

Shisui Sensei

In a non-mass au, Shisui is chosen to act as squad seven's sensei.

(I love Kakashi as a sensei, but Shisui would be better at it.)

Shisui has one of the best sharingan in the clan, making him doubly qualified to teach Sasuke and Naruto.

(When my diabetic verses overlap with this one, he's triply qualified as he's used to dealing with Itachi's diabetes and knows how to handle Sakura's as a result)

He takes Sakura aside early on to confront her about her crush. "What made you want to become a Shinobi in the first place? It couldn't have been my bratty cousin Sasuke because you haven't even met him yet at that point."

Sakura is forced to actually think about what made her become a kunoichi and why it was so important to her in the first place.

"It's okay to have these feelings, but they can't get in the way on a mission or your entire team could be killed. That's not something you want on your conscious."

He actually takes an invested interest in making sure all his kids succeed.

Sakura's chakra control is unparalleled by the other two, so he teaches her his signature shushin jutsu.

She does not enjoy the speed training it requires to become as fast as he is with it, but she appreciates that he's teaching her.

He also teaches her how to make afterimage clones.

The fact that not even Itachi can do that excites her immensely.

Sasuke and Naruto aren't jealous. Of course not.

(Itachi totally is. "You never even taught me how to do that!" He's been trying to replicate it for years to no avail)

The chunin exams go very differently. Shisui's hesitant to nominate them, but they're well prepared and part of him wants them to get the experience.

They still get attacked by Orochimaru, but they're more prepared. Still lose drastically, but they put up more of a fight. Sakura isn't completely useless.

Shisui is pissed to learn his ducklings have been hurt. He insists on being part of the ANBU squad that goes to check things out inside the forest.

He's so tempted to withdrawal them from the exam when he sees two of his three students are unconscious.

Kakashi (also part of that ANBU squad) has to talk him out of it.

Shisui: People have died from Orochimaru's seal. If anything happens to either of them, I'm a dead man.

(Mikoto, Fugaku, and Itachi have all grown fond of both of Sasuke's little teammates. None will be happy if anything happens because Shisui nominated them for the exams)

Shisui ultimately decided to give it 24 hours. If neither shows any signs of waking by then, he's withdrawing them.

He ends up letting them stay. Not because the boys woke up within the 24 hour period, but because both boys were alive and Sakura was doing a decent job of looking after them.

He worried the entire time though. Itachi was little better (this was his brother after all) but understood this was Shisui's genin team and he needed reassurance that the kids would be okay.

Itachi, who completed the exams alone in record time as a ten year old: I'm sure they'll be fine.

Shisui, who knows everything about Itachi: This does not make me feel better.

(Itachi, now of legal age, decides to distract him with kisses instead. It's much more effective.)

He's kind enough to let Iruka be the first person the kids see at the end of the exams, but he's anxiously waiting to be the second.

Shisui: I just spent the past three days worrying about your sorry asses because you were attacked by a Sanin. Accept the damn hug.

For some reason, I hc Shisui as a seals person. He's not overly familiar with the seal used to contain the curse mark, but he has Kakashi show/teach him and copies it with the sharingan.

Naruto still goes off with Jiraiya (much to Shisui's displeasure) for two years. Sakura learns medical ninjutsu from Tsunade, but he still teaches Sasuke and Sakura until they make chunin.

Team Pyro is always on my mind...Obito, Itachi, Shisui, Sasuke and sometimes Kakashi. ANBU, the lot of them, and all jounin-rank. With Mangekyou's and mountains of katon jutsus.

All of them are socially awkward, besides Shisui. Sarcasm tenfold and all of them are always scowling. All of them have flee on sight and people shit their pants whenever they realize who they are. Five, hot men walking as a group ln the streets of Konoha. And they would tease men and women alike just for the fun of it.

Uchiha loves fiercely, and you will be dead. I repeat. You will be dead in their arms if you try harming one of them. You do not hurt them, especially the youngest.

They're fond to cats. Imagine them smiling at the cute felines on their arms and laps.

Pyromaniac tendencies. Like, if you see property damage and fire, you would immediately assume Team Pyro did it.  Sasuke + Obito has Rinnegans in this au, with Kakashi still having one eye from Obito.

Au where Itachi is Hokage and Kakashi is Anbu Commander.l XD

This is a non mass AU. When Hiruzen dies (still in the attack on the hidden leaf by the sand/sound villages orchestrated by Orochimaru) The village has to decide on who will become the next Hokage. Kakashi is the one who puts Itachi's name forward. In part, he does it to make sure that his name isn't considered, because the last thing Kakashi wants is the elders trying to make him Hokage. but he also knows that Itachi is a good fit for the job.

The jonin on the council are divided on the idea at first. Some of them are concerned by how young Itachi is still while others have hesitation about having an Uchiha become the Hokage, especially with memories of the attempted coup still fresh in their minds. But Kakashi makes a good point that Itachi isn't much younger than Minato was when he was voted Hokage and that Itachi has more than proved his service to the village, including putting an end to the coup.

The village waits for almost a week for the council to reach their decision. But finally the news comes out. And Kakashi makes it a point to be the one to tell Itachi himself.

The village is shocked. There are whispers about what kind of Hokage Itachi might be.

The first thing Itachi does is surround himself with advisors. He picks jonin from all of the clans as well as several clanless jonin, something which quickly earns him respect as he ensures that everyone's voices are heard.

For Itachi, Kakashi is the obvious choice to take lead of the Anbu. Kakashi has seen the worst parts of the shinobi system, so who better to help Itachi change it for the better.

With Kakashi as head of Anbu, Itachi's first goal is to quietly set about dismantling root. Especially in the first few days of his tenure as Hokage, Itachi doesn't deal with Danzo head on. He knows he has to bide his time, to quietly and subtly shift the power away from the elders who allowed root to grow. Kakashi is his closest advisor. Itachi knows that Kakashi will give him honest opinions, even if he thinks that Itachi is wrong. He knows he can trust Kakashi and that he can rely on Kakashi's experience to help guide him.

By the time the elders realize what is happening, it's too late. And Kakashi gets a delightful amount of pleasure in watching as they realize that all the influence they once held has been given over to the council of jonin. Especially when Itachi calls Danzo and Kakashi into his office together and tells Danzo that root is being dissolved, that it does not serve Konoha's interests to have their forces divided. Kakashi has his anbu forces staged just outside the hokage's office, in case Danzo tries to fight them.

Danzo does try to use Shisui's mangekyo on the two of them, which Itachi counters with the eye that Shisui gave him and in a flash Kakashi is holding Danzo by the collar, chidori millimeters from piercing through Danzo's chest.

Itachi smiles. Anbu agents slip out from where they had been hidden, along with Shikaku and two other members of the Jonin council. Itachi and Kakashi smile, knowing their trap worked exactly how they hoped and Danzo is imprisoned for crimes against the leaf and the root compound is destroyed.

in this AU, Tenzo is assigned as team 7 sensei instead of Kakashi. With root gone, Kakashi helps Itachi restructure the Anbu, putting age restrictions in place, training medi-nin to accompany anbu squads on missions and instituting routine mental health screenings as well as limiting the amount of time a shinobi may spend in the Anbu.

I'm going to share some nice headcanons I have about Shisui's ANBU life, because I think after all the angst I've been dishing out recently we could all do with something nicer

When he first joined ANBU, Shisui was placed in a team with Raidō, Genma and Aoba

They used to tease him endlessly because he was the shortest one of the team

Even after hitting his grow spurt, that brought him to 1.80 cm, he only got taller than Aoba, who is 1.78 cm. Genma (1.81 cm) and Raidō (1.83 cm) still tease him about their height difference

Shisui wasn't able to win against any of the other three for the first couple of years in ANBU, and it annoyed him just as much as it excited him for having a sparring partner worth his time

The first time Shisui beats Genma in a spar, he gets taken out to drink to celebrate. Shisui is 15 when that happens, and no matter how much Raidō repeats that he does not have the age needed to drink, they still all get absolutely shit-faced

The first time Shisui beats Raidō, he gifts him a new tantō, custom-made just for him. Shisui always brings it with him, he absolutely loves it

The first time Shisui beats Aoba is also the day Shisui gets his summoning contract, Aoba simply asks him if he would like to summon crows like him and Shisui is absolutely delighted about it, because crows are not common summons and it's very rare to find someone using them

Shisui's ANBU team, after he becomes a Captain on his own and leaves Raidō's team, is known as Team Tori

Tori means 'bird', and that's because every single one of the squad has a bird mask

Shisui, the Captain, has the Parrot mask. Then there's Owl, who's a Hyuuga. Hummingbird, who is an Aburame. And Crane, a civilian-born who earned so well her place in ANBU that everyone is afraid of fucking with her

Even Shisui is afraid of her

She's short and absolutely vicious, it's almost like the spite is more concetrated in her little form, but if you tell her that she's small she can and will use her bo staff to smash your knees, and then she'll laugh at you when you'll be on the ground and shorter than her

Owl is actually pretty nice to talk with, she's from the branch family and she doesn't give a fuck about the rivalry between Uchiha and Hyuuga, she always stop to chat with Shisui if they meet around the village and everyone else be damned

Everyone think that they're dating, but while Shisui does find her funny and wouldn't mind much if they tried for something more, she has no interest in any kind of romantic relationship. They do have sex once in a while to unwind with someone they trust, though

Hummingbird is very shy and rarely talks, and he's actually the true brain of the squad. He's usually the one who points out all the way Shisui's plans can go wrong, and then sighs with a 'I told you so' expression on his face whenever things go inevitably (and often literally) up in flames

He's also the squad's healer, and will somehow convey his disappointment from behind his glasses while healing someone in absolute silence. You will be able to feel his gaze on you, even if you can't see his eyes

They are very protective of each other, and it's almost cute to see. It's rare for an ANBU squad to get along so well, because members rotate constantly between different teams depending on what skills a mission needs, but they somehow always make sure to be together more often than not

Almost cute, because then you get to know what insane people they are and they are not cute anymore, only terrifying

Even Hummingbird, who seems the more level-headed of the team, is lowkey insane. I mean, you have to be if you have Uchiha Shisui as your squad leader

Crane once launched her bo staff like a javeline from afar and hit exactly between the enemy's eyes, knocking them out in a single move

Shisui called her 'Crane-sama' for a whole week after that

Owl doesn't usually needs weapon, but if she really has to she'll go for nunchakus

Hummingbird, like Owl, rarely uses weapons, he has his insects after all, but he does carry a naginata, nicely sealed away in a storage scroll so that it doesn't hinder him when he doesn't use it

It's always funny to watch the enemy's face go slack with surprise when he unseals his weapon. It only happens when he's very pissed off, which is a rather rare thing to see

The enemy usually doesn't survive very long after that, Hummingbird does know the human body better than anyone else in the squad, after all, and he knows where to hit to finish the fight quickly

Itachi Uchiha the 5th Hokage

Verse Details The nature of Danzo’s mission was one that Itachi couldn’t stomach, an ultimatum issued to him in a moment when attacking the elder would be fool-hardy. Compounded with the approach of a mysterious masked man who wished for some supposed revenge as a man who was alleged to have been dead for decades by that point, with a grave that people had seen the corpse been lowered into, Itachi was not one so stupid as to simply carry out the death of his clan without thought.

No, he would approach Hiruzen, who was infuriated by how Danzo made the play behind his back, and the two adjusted their plan. No, instead of killing his entire clan, Itachi would make a play for the conspirators of the coup.

Itachi would approach his father and tell him of what Danzo had said, and implicated the elder in the facts of Shisui’s death, which Itachi had uncovered, though keeping the nature of his friend’s actual suicide, and his possession of the other shinobi’s eye, to himself. Telling Fugaku of Root’s intent to eradicate the clan, Fugaku sent out a message to “rally the troops”, even if the coup was ahead of schedule, an attack without the Kyūbi would be difficult, but with Itachi firmly on their side, and two sets of Mangekyou Sharingan, taking his head would be a simple affair.

But when his father was turned, Itachi abruptly took his father’s life, running a blade into his chest, and explaining the reason for his betrayal. Though the sorrow he felt for being killed by his son was immense, Fugaku understood, and even admired, his elder son’s discretion and loyalty to his village, but above all, to his family.

With Hiruzen and Kakashi in tow, a strike-force of three moved out to where the Uchiha conspirators meant to meet, and an intense battle raged. Within a few hours, a wildfire spread across the woods south of the Uchiha village, creating a massive clearing of ash and death, and most of the elders within the Uchiha clan were dead. Putting his blade to his own, and engulfing the forest in black flames, Itachi earned his alias of “Konoha’s Black Flame”. And with the betrayal, a restructuring of the Uchiha clan would begin.

Over the next several years the Uchiha clan would be re-integrated into the village, and the nature of the attempted coup would be kept from those who were unaware of it, or who didn’t need to be aware.

The children should live among their countrymen, and not come to believe that their allies may have wished for their death. But some, such as Sasuke, who lost a parent to the coup, would become suspicious. Particularly of Itachi, in Sasuke’s case, when he was declared head of the clan several years later, despite only being a teenager, and had been declared a Jōnin following the failure of the coup, and several other high-profile missions. This suspicion wouldn’t go unnoticed by powers at-play.

As a Jōnin, Itachi would take the duty of instructing Squad 2 from his previous sensei, and instruct a trio of genin two years prior to his own brother’s graduation. Though he respected his students highly, he refused to allow them to take the Chūnin exams for those same two years. But no significant events would occur otherwise in his career, though his leadership of the clan would earn his other notable alias “Sword of The Uchiha” becoming its leader and protector, acting as the clan’s sword, and cutting down enemies without hesitation. But the reality is, he aligned the reformed version of the clan that he was leading with the interests of the village.

During Konoha Crush is when things would start to pick up for Itachi, though, as this version of the shinobi would not have had to rely as heavily on his Mangekyou over the years, meaning that his condition would not have been as hastened, particularly when working in tandem with his aggressive medications to keep what is essentially untreated lung cancer at-bay. Still, Itachi would prove himself a highly-capable shinobi with a deep and abiding loyalty to the village that had proven itself to the council, aside from Hanzo.

Orochimaru’s plan throughout Konoha Crush is more or less the same, though he would pull on the strings of Sasuke’s distrust of his brother, instead of an outright desire for vengeance, as a way to entice the boy into eventually coming into his fold. And in the aftermath of the battle, in which Itachi intervened towards the end, he would help Hiruzen defeat the two resurrected kage, and keep Orochimaru from carrying out his plans with impunity through the use of his Amaterasu. In his lands moments, Hiruzen would declare Itachi his successor, as hokage and in ideaology.

Of course the council would not initially endorse this choice, initially attempting to choose Jiraiya, though the sannin would naturally defer to a younger candidate, and agree with Hiruzen’s endorsement. And through that, the youngest Hokage would be declared since Minato.

A need for a dedicated medical specialist was still needed, though, and the first mission Itachi would dispatch was Naruto’s and Jiraiya’s to find Tsunade Senju, in-part to help those with permanent injuries from Konoha Crush, but also hopefully to seek treatment for his own condition. After all, his slow decline due to his illness wouldn’t do for a hokage, especially if he hoped to keep the job for a fairly long while.

Under treatment from Tsunade, Itachi would begin a long period of treatment, slowly improving in health, though the nature of his treatment would leave him unable to pursue Sasuke’s retrieval when his brother fled the village, enticed and tainted by Orochimaru’s cryptic hints and promises of power.

During the timeskip, Itachi would continue to receive routine medical treatment which would allow him to actively resume training during his free time from the responsibilities of his new rank in a time period of upheaval. Overall the time skip period would remain largely unchanged, though Itachi would likely be more aggressive in the pursuit of retrieving Sasuke from rogue stats, likely dedicating anbu resources to it, even when the village can’t spare. This, combined with his Uchiha status, would make him a controversial figure among the council.

Over the course of Part II one sees Itachi performing a lot of the same duties and roles as Tsunade does in the mainline plot, aside from training Sakura full-time, which is largely still her role narratively. However, Itachi will occasionally be seen training Sakura into how to perfect various Genjutsu, illusions, complexity, things of that manner, to make her into a well-rounded shinobi, and not a simple medical specialist. Steadily, the audience sees Itachi grow back to his more full potential and ability which (if based on his ability when resurrected through the Edo Tensei) is significant, if his ability to perform high-cost jutsu is somewhat limited by his unimpressive chakra pool, though his treatments will assist his chakra pool further during this period as well.

Ultimately, Itachi would still be less than successful in defending the village against Pain’s invasion as well, though he still requires nearly all of the Pain clones to be defeated. Itachi’s unwillingness to push his Mangekyou too far without having yet saved Sasuke, or rather his eyes for Sasuke, prevented the hokage from being able to put the final nail in the coffin. Naturally, Naruto’s intervention still occurs without much difference.

Itachi would sit out much of the Hokage summit arc, spending a fair portion of it on death’s door, but appearing towards the end, during Sasuke’s assault and battle with Danzo. During the period of recovery, though, Itachi requested his left eye be replaced with Shisui’s, gaining eternal mangekyou sharingan in one eye, as his vision was steadily waning.

Intervening alongside Sasuke, the brothers teamed up to defeat Danzo, with Itachi using his best friend’s eye to dispell Danzo’s attempts at genjutsu. Retrieving the eye, Sasuke would ultimately level his accusation against Itachi, though what Tobi told him, to that point, had allowed Sasuke to come to the decision to destroy Konoha, for taking his family from him.

Shit more or less plays out the same otherwise ig? I feel as if the main differences is that Itachi would completely implant Shisui’s set of eyes and reserve his own for Sasuke’s down the road. The war arc probably plays out more or less the same, same players, though Itachi provides Sasuke his eyes via a battlefield surgery with Sakura or Tsunade likely conducting the transplant and healing him quickly so he can re-enter the battle.

Itachi may or may not lose one of his eyes permanently through the war, in order to duplicate the battle with Kabuto, but similarly in the future Itachi’s eye may be artificially regenerated with Senju cells or some other Kishimoto-esque McGuffin. Either way Itachi would remain Hokage until Naruto picks up the office.

Ability-Differences from canon I more or less feel as if Itachi’s level of power with Eternal MS and actual treatment of his disease paired with remission would probably result in essentially a level of power we see in Edo Tensei Itachi, though his Genjutsu, Amaterasu, and Susano’o would all be more potent.

Forgotten fics that I’ve made after reading Itachi Shinden and having Itachi & Obito plus Itachi & Kakashi fever. God I have so many words about them, the two good-for-nothing harbinger of disaster Ouroboros duo who doomed the poor poor little Itachi the moment they unknowingly made Itachi awaken his sharingan and keep it alive. Itachi’s observation of Kakashi whom he only knows as Friend-Killer ANBU Captain, and Itachi’s observation of Obito whom he only knows as Madara the Enemy of Konoha.

Kakashi and Obito’s sloppy attempts to help Itachi, with their own definition of ‘helping’. 

Perhaps I’ll make another post about them. Perhaps. 

(Because of that, I also have a prompt in mind about Kakashi and Obito being toddler Itachi’s terrible babysitters. I may or may not write them later.) 

"I really wonder, except for Danzou's order and your brother's sake, what makes you determined to kill your own clan for village's sake?"

Itachi looks at the masked man beside him. He detects no mockery in his tone, neither accusation, just plain curiousness. Part of him yells that this man is untrustworthy. This man is dangerous, an enemy of Konoha. But... 

He’s an Uchiha. A family. The only one who know about his situation, his pain.

Maybe it's the only time he can tell someone about his feeling for this damned task. Surely he's allowed to take what he can get, just in a moment of selfishness.

A soft, almost lazy but not indifferent voice rings on his ears. Another man who also received Sharingan from his dear, dead friend. His determination to move his broken body away from his teammates' grave, from vicious whisper to end his own life like his legendary father, just for the sake of a promise alone.

"Someone entrusted me one of his eyeballs, with a promise to protect Konoha and Uchiha name. I want to honor that promise with my life. But this...is all I can do."

Shisui...

He carefully conceals his expression, can feel Madara stares intently at him. He has no clue what kind of expression his "ally" has right now. He's never good at reading someone, and the one-eyehole mask makes it more difficult.

In all fairness for him, perhaps no one in this world can properly express their feeling with only one eye visible. Yes, he has met Hatake Kakashi, worked for 2 years under his squad, and although he realized that the so-called Friend-Killer reputation is just an inaccurate rumor, for him his captain is as cold-blooded, as unreadable as other people thought.

Itachi could not trust people who wear mask to hide their faces. Whether ally or enemy, comrade or foe.

"You reminds me of someone, pathetically so."

Itachi suppresses his jolt. Does Madara read his mind? No, it can't be, even the Madara himself can't copy Yamanaka's ability and delves into his mind without his awareness.

Right?

No, the man in front of him is an enemy of Konoha. He can’t let himself be shaken in front of the enemy. Maybe he should shake him back. 

“Am I remind you of your little brother whom his eyes lodged in your skull?” Itachi mused, nonchalantly. 

Madara gave no response. 

In Uchiha history, it was never clear whether Uchiha Madara forcefully took his brother's eyes or he received it as a gift. It probably will never be clear. Itachi doesn’t push his ‘ally’ to answer him, he has no interest to obtain the truth. He can't afford to think about a long dark past, when his own dark future is looming over him.

The dark future of his beloved little brother hating him forever, the future of his death by those pure little hands.

"Let's get started."

The masked man silently plucks a pair of eyes from their previous holder, a young shop-owner lady who probably never touch hitai-ate let alone went to battlefield, yet instantly awaken her Sharingan when she saw her child being gutted in front of her. 

He makes sure to remember their figure with his Sharingan, so he can bring them together again, in the another world.

'Madara' (in the past he called himself Uchiha Obito, but his past belongs in the fake world and he no longer cares for anything from that fake world) stares passively at the massacre that happened right in front of him. He has no care for the victims, Uchiha clan means nothing to him. His past self is the black sheep of this clan and his new persona are being shunned by the same clan. It’s not like he hates Uchiha clan or anything, he just sees no reason to mourn them.

He will create them again in the ‘real’ world anyway, and this time maybe they can be his real family. Both for his past self and his new self. 

He was more interested in the teen perpetrator. The pathetic 13 years old boy, with trembling shoulder, bloodied hands, and tears brimming on his red eyes.

The boy who is too selfless for his own good, too obedient...

Too weak..

He still can see the little boy from 5 years ago, athough the kid certainly grows from that time (he even awaken a powerful Mangekyou). An 8 years old kid, awaken his Sharingan after witnessing the death of his teammate, the kid whom he almost killed just before he sensed Hatake Kakashi’s approaching chakra. 

Because of course he always arrives on time.

That annoying Bakakashi.

He brushed that useless thought from his head. 

"It must be Uchiha Shisui who gave him the eye.” 

Uchiha Shisui, Shisui of the Body Flicker, the Owner of Mangekyou Sharingan Kotoamatsukami.

Uchiha Itachi’s closest comrade, despite neither of them are placed in the same squad.

He was presumed dead by suicide jumping to the Naka river, yet his corpse was never retrieved.

Just like him.

It’s an useless thought of an useless scenario in the useless world but..

What if a miracle happened once again?

What if Uchiha Shisui jolted awake, surrounded by darkness with no light in sight...

Drag his broken body, desperately ran back toward his home...

To watch his trusted person murdered his family, his beloved clan, his ray of light?

What will he feel? Anger? Sorrow? Helplessness?

Will he think... That this world is a hell too?

‘Madara’ shakes his head solemnly. He should stop putting useless thoughts in his mind. There’s no way this evil, cruel, despicable world allows a miracle happen for a second time. It won’t even allow him to make it in time, to let him save her, save him, save them.

And that’s precisely why he can’t accept this world as nothing more than a fake reality. 

‘Madara’ chuckles, as if the massive bloodbath that happens in front of him is just a big, silly jokes. 

Probably, for him, it is.

“Don’t worry, Itachi... I promised that Shisui, your parents, your clan, your brother, everything you hold dear, will exist by your side in the ‘real’ world, the world of Infinite Tsukuyomi.”

'Madara' spins around, his laughter mixed with his clan's scream decorates the moonlight night. 

The annoyingly silver moonlight.

"Ahh, I really can't wait to paint the silver moon into red, and turn this hell into heaven...”
