Cognitive Linguistics Within the Uchiha Clan
Kudos to @blessingoflove for having the discussion with me that sparked these wonderful headcanons.
The Uchiha Clan may come across as high, cold, and aloof to outsiders, but in reality, their linguistic patterns vary immensely depending on the situation they are in.
The face that one shows within the inner group of trusted clan members is different from the face that one shows to the rest of the world. Due to the volatile times that exist, individuals must tread carefully when interacting with strangers, who are regarded with wariness and caution.
No clan knows the power of bonds better than the Uchiha, who close themselves off to strangers. At best, they won’t care about your existence and at worst, they’ll seek your demise. But to those who are in their inner circle, they’ll devote their life to you.
With teammates, Uchiha speak bluntly in practical mannerisms. They focus on bringing everyone together to get done the task at hand. Much of this can be seen with Sasuke’s quick thinking proactiveness during the Chūnin Exams, as well as his sharp honesty later on with Team Hebi.
Honesty is another big trait within the clan. Uchiha don’t trust easily, but once you get past that initial barrier, you’ll know that they care about you when they open themselves up with you. This can mean different things with different individuals, whether that is blunt teasing, sarcastic roasting, or gentle smiles, but nevertheless they will be honest with you and they expect you to be honest back. The custom came from an era when different factions battled against each other and lies served as currency. Clan members, whether they dissented against each other personally, had to come together as a collective whole and fight against the enemy. Telling the whole truth was only reserved to trusted members of one’s inner circle, and this is a tendency that expands to shinobi as a whole.

They use a lot of symbolism and metaphors in their speech. This has come from nearly 1000 years of poetry and proverbs preserved over centuries of battle. Such flowery expressions carry over to leadership, where an Uchiha might say one phrase that means different things to different people all at once, to save time on instructions during a critical moment. Think of Madara’s metaphors that he used during battle, as well as Sasuke’s speech to Orochimaru.

Art and literature has a deep and rich history within the Uchiha clan. Despite their military preeminence, a select few clan members dedicated themselves to such disciplines off of the battlefield and painted the most beautiful depictions while composing magnificent novels. To not forget pieces of information, the authors would utilize their Sharingan to keep it in their mind until the time it was really needed. The stories told juxtaposed themes such as love vs. hate, justice vs. corruption, balance vs. chaos, harshness vs. gentleness, and cruelty vs. mercy. They express emotions that move the viewer’s heart. Most scrolls containing such precious information were preserved within the home of the present clan head. After the founding of Konoha, they were moved to the clan library.
Because their dōjutsū is called the “all-seeing eye, the Sharingan,” clan culture centers around being grounded in truth. Countless scrolls have been written about the hold that lies can have on reality and the importance of escaping those delusions, as well as methods how. Most of those methods center around an external person ‘breaking the spell’ of lies on the user’s reality. In fact, jutsu such as Izanami were created specifically to counter the psychological rabbit hole users could get stuck in if they abused the power of the Izanagi. Another example of cautionary jutsu is Sasuke’s Kagutsuchi, which controls Amaterasu flames. So different jutsu were created with the purpose of keeping clan members in check if they strayed off of the path of truth.
Henceforth, Uchiha are disciplined from a very young age in principles such as virtue, justice, ceremony, wisdom, faithfulness, prudence, and filial piety. These are in turn gathered into the Eight Principles of Shinobi later on in the age of Hokage. Contrary to what many believe, they have existed for time immemorial prior to the founding of the Hidden Villages. Their existence stretches all the way back to the Warring States Period.
When influenced by their heart, Uchiha tend to use flowery language and words with deep symbolism. This is a big change from their bluntness in front of others. They reveal a subtle and poetic side brimming with rich imagery and moving stories. One can see this side expressed in Itachi and Obito when they respectively speak about the history of the Mangekyō Sharingan.
Towards the object of their affection, Uchiha may say contradictory expressions in a combination of direct and indirect language. This is a test of the other person’s character, but paradoxically, a way to grow closer to them as they distance themselves apart. They may court that person with subtle glances while maintaining a polite demeanor. Even beneath the few words that they do say, there is so much deep meaning beneath the surface that the person being spoken to may never know the full extent of what the Uchiha is feeling.
In more practical matters of marriage for political reasons, clan members may put up a blunt front and speak directly to the person they are betrothed to. But if the couple truly falls in love, this straightforward distance will gradually transform into warm affection. When an Uchiha’s heart is touched by strong emotions, the sides that they suppress in battle will appear and bless the other person with the good qualities of their nature.
Clan culture is pretty subtle overall. On and off the battlefield, clan members pay close attention to each other’s mannerisms, demeanor, and the look in each other’s eyes. Uchiha maintain the eyes as an especially important part of the body, not just because they are the key to unlocking their prized dojutsu, but also because they are the window to the person’s soul.
Eye contact is especially meaningful because the Uchiha are feared far and wide for their dōjutsu. As the saying goes, ‘Never look into a Sharingan user’s eyes.’ Looking into their eyes may mean either an antagonistic stance or a sign of deep trust/respect if that person is known for having a very powerful dōjutsu that others may normally be afraid of.
Uchiha are sensitive to the truth of those around them. What this means is that they won’t simply be looking into your motives, your goals, or your opinions. They will also detect the subtle nuances of your nature and measure your capacity against theirs. Uchiha don't do this with the intent to harm per say, but it is a natural trait that comes from their occupation as shinobi. It is also a tendency that runs deeper within their clan culture specifically to understand another person’s spirit completely. This is done to overcome their own shortcomings in relation to that person, but also to understand the truth of what they are feeling. The Uchiha might come across as emotionless and stoic on the battlefield, but off of it, they are sensitive to the hearts of others and perceptive.

Trying to find Madara and Hashirama fanfic that is platonic/non shipping is like trying to find a needle in a haystack. Even Izuna and Madara content is all shipping, shipping, shipping. There are barely any fanfics with Madara, Izuna, Hashirama, Tobirmama that are non ships and explore brotherly/familial/friendship/political dynamics.

Madara Golden Age
Chapter 6 : My only brother
“Madara, you know I’ve trained your father and I fought alongside your grand-father. But do you know that I met once your great-grandfather? He was already advanced in age and I was just a boy. It was a long time ago when the Uchihas were still mostly shepherds living up in the mountains. I was young but I remember precisely his presence. He was coming back from hunting, a deer on his shoulder and an incredible bow, taller than him, in his other hand. He had this special chakra, so heavy, so raw and powerful even when he wasn’t kneading it. It was as if Lord Indra himself was breathing through him, tightly clinging to his soul [...]"

This is actually hilarious I've always thought the same it's really hard to put him in any Modern AU because he's written to be so old school. And I think it's because of the era. Madara thrives in this fictional medieval era that emphasis individual strategy and physical power, battle experiences... Warring state era is really the peak of warrior age, the hero with a big H. In modern times after the invention of firearms this age is over. It doesn't matter anymore if you spend decades practising martial arts ( or ninjutsu in the context) Even a child can kill a trained warrior from distance, if he aims well. And generals aren't anymore in the frontlines but far away, protected in their HQ sending orders. In modern time, power is measured by economic power and technological advancements through intellectual skills. What can he do? CEO? Bankers? AI engineer? Astrophysicist? It lacks the physical activity. And anyone can really imagine Madara giving his whole life to earn a lot of money? So mundane so ugly... Surgeon? Same that's quite a static job. Athletes? Yeah but he's not using much of his great IQ. School AU? I can't picture Madara just following a normal schooling, he has been raised in the wood hood.
The only AU I can think of is historical one in different geography ( China, Mongol tribes? European Fantasy? or Modern Military AU? Special forces AU? Post apocalyptic AU? Mafia AU? But let's be honest it's so close to the Canon Madara that it's boring. In essence being a guy born during a chaotic time that learn to reach the top by his own strength and decide to dominate the world.
obito is the most versatile character and madara is the least versatile in that while obito seems to fit into almost any scenario. like there is literally almost nothing i cannot imagine him doing, MADARA. seems to fit pretty much only in the narrative that he is originally in ... idk if this makes sense but obito can be the most silliest, funniest character in the stupidest, and also Modern AU scenarios as well as the most evil fucked up malicious crazy guy in the most serious situations whereas madara truly only belongs on the battlefield in THAT one specific narrative ... it is like he was made for this story. this one story only and no other. ya know

In Honor of Madara Uchiha
This was Madara’s first appearance in the present story line, and from this badass pose alone, readers knew that shit was about to hit the fan, and boy, did it ever. This was why Madara needed to be the final antagonist before the 2nd Naruto/Sasuke showdown; because not only did he have plenty of prestige before the war arc due to being an individual on the same level as “The God of Shinobi”, Hashirama Senju, but also because during the war, his badassery simply knew no bounds, and the hype regarding his eventual confrontation with Naruto and Sasuke reached emphatic levels. Yet, this was all just to see his character get pushed to the side to make way for an antagonist who no one expected, or really cared about.
After he had soloed an entire army platoon, he then revealed that he had the Rinnegan in his already overpowered arsenal:
How did he obtain this power?
Hashirama’s cells are literally just the answer to everything :P But in all seriousness, dealing with the entire army platoon by himself would have been an adequate testament to his strength, but Maddy decided to go a step further, and unleashed a meteorite upon the allied shinobi forces:
It took absolutely everything that Gaara and Onoki had to stop it, and when they finally did, an unimpressed Madara was just like, “Well done, now here’s another!”:
And Maddy was unleashing these attacks as though they were common fireball jutsus; they didn’t seem to consume much chakra at all.
So at this point, he had sent a clear message to the allied forces on just what kind of power they were dealing with. So their response was to dispatch the 5 Kages, thinking that would be sufficient. But Madara defeated them all, with relative ease:
And he more than stayed true to his word:
The guy just utterly dominated the 5 kages. That really gave a clear indication of the disparity between their power levels. He was on a pedestal completely above the rest. So who was the unfortunate next target to suffer his wrath, how about all the tailed beasts?
And he succeeded too, Madara not only lived up to the immense hype surrounding his character, but he both went above and beyond reader expectations, and added to his already immense prestige:
This guy and his poses XD At this point, many readers were wondering how on earth Madara could be defeated in a plausible manner, but his confrontation with Gai revealed that he did have a few chinks in his armour and wasn’t the unstoppable juggernaut he appeared to be:
But Maddy was proving to be not only very resilient, but he was seriously enjoying the enhanced level of competition Gai was providing. Thus, although Maddy was getting beaten up, his aura of badassery remained untouched:
Gai’s best efforts were no doubt highly impressive, but they weren’t enough to keep Madara down. Subsequently, as all great antagonists do, Madara gave his badass boast following his triumph against Gai:
Literally all throughout the war, I’m pretty sure Madara’s actions were causing the allied forces to think things along the lines of:
He wasn’t depicted as unstoppable, as explained above, but it did really seem like nothing the allied forces could do would be enough to keep him down. He took out the 5 Kages, the tailed beasts, and Gai after unleashing the 8th gate, all on his own. Even the two trump cards, Naruto and Sasuke, were close to meeting their demise:
However, after a while, Naruto and Sasuke were revived with sage abilities, courtesy of Hagoromo, in order to even the playing field a little bit:
So Maddy was just like, “bring it on!”, the stage was set for the final battle, and the hype was unprecedented:
So then why did this have to happen?
Why did Kaguya have to usurp Madara’s rightful position as the “Big Bad” of the war?
Sure, Kaguya was the strongest individual entity to ever exist in the Narutoverse, and so on paper, that makes it seem like a more interesting final confrontation. But the issue, at least for me, was that there was no hype surrounding her character. Madara had been constantly built up, prior to and during the war; it was his popularity that had skyrocketed and I therefore wanted to see the war end with him. In comparison, Kaguya hadn’t really been talked about at all. She just came out of nowhere and pushed Maddy to the side.
What’s worse was that in my opinion, Kaguya was a very boring character with no personality or charisma whatsoever. She just seemed very bland. Powerful, but bland, and that made her fight a lot less engaging. Compare that with Madara’s ever so charming personality:
Madara displayed such an erratic, almost exuberant personality that made him fascinating to watch and enabled readers to fully engage in his fights and interactions:
Now compare that to Kaguya who was rather monotonous, and whose only display of real emotion was sorrow:
At one point I’m sure Kishi caught wind of the predominantly negative reaction to Kaguya’s character, and was tempted to draw something along the lines of:
But there was a reason that Kaguya wasn’t very well received. Having Team 7 face off against the strongest character in history isn’t enough to ensure that the fight will be engaging and entertaining to read/watch. There needs to be some build up to it; you need to make the readers want to see the outcome of the fight you’re hyping up, and that is exactly what Kishi did with Madara. That’s why it was so disappointing to have seen him in such a sorry state when all was said and done:
He didn’t deserve to have that spotlight stolen from him by a powerful, but boring and stoic robot. Madara had all the credentials to provide a glorious penultimate fight, but alas, Kishi favoured power over substance for the “Big Bad”, and I was just left wondering when it’ll end for the majority of the fight. It wouldn’t have been that way with good ole’ Maddy :-(
I suppose I’ll end it with one of the reasons why Madara was such a cool antagonist :D
Gotta love him :D
