Media List 2023

Ok I’m making a list of the things I want to watch/read/have been suggested to me etc before I lose track lol and so people can look if they want to see I guess. I’m putting suggestions on this list too even if I haven’t looked into them very hard and I think it goes without saying that just because it’s on the list doesn’t mean I’ll get to it.

None of these are in any real order, but I’m doing a numbered list so I can use a random number generator if I’m getting decision paralysis. I’m putting where I can personally watch them for reference, they may be available other places that I don’t have a subscription to.

This Is Joan Collins

Joan Collins was an uneven actress, but she remains a great storyteller, so it’s only natural that she should provide the narration for Clare Beavan’s THIS IS JOAN COLLINS (2022, TCM). With its subject’s involvement, it’s hard to say how accurate the account of her life and career is. One curious choice is having Collins read narration over clips, then cutting to her as she re-writes the script to something she likes better. Is the idea to show the filmmakers’ independence from Dame Joan’s interference. She comes off quite endearingly human in those moments, but it still feels stagy. Better are her seemingly unrehearsed visual and vocal reactions to memories, stills and film clips, particularly when she sees for the first time a home movie confirming one husband’s infidelities. It’s the career, however, that’s at the center of it all. They include a couple of film clips in which she’s downright bad (though nothing as embarrassing as William Shatner’s “emoting” on her STAR TREK episode), but there are also early hints of her wit and a lot of good physical work, including an impressive strip tease from SEVEN THIEVES (1960). The highlight, of course, is her reign as the crown villain on DYNASTY. The fashions alone are fascinating as a compendium of ‘80s style/camp. Collins and the filmmakers try to position her as a feminist icon as well. It’s an interesting take since she has had to survive predatory husbands and producers, an early date rape and complaints that a woman in her forties had no business presenting herself as a sex symbol. At the very least, the documentary is entertaining, largely thanks to Collins’ narration. She knows how to wring the humor out of the most innocent phrase. My only regret is that time kept out some of the more obscure items on her resume, like her stint on GUIDING LIGHT or her tour in James Kirkwood’s wretched LEGENDS with former co-star Linda Evans.

Disney Movies List

Ok first of all I want to make clear that english is not my first language. I therefore apologize in advance for any grammar or spelling mistakes. Please don't be too strict with me =D

I recently bought Disney+ and I plan now to watch and review every movie, Disney has ever produced or participated in it. And I tell you, this will be a hell of a trip, because my list now contains no fewer than 701 movies. That means if I watch at least one movie every day, it will take me about 2 years to see all of them. And since I will most likely not watch a movie every day, I will definitely need at least twice as long....

For the films on my list, which I marked with a cross at the end, it means that I have seen them already. However, since I last saw most of these movies in my childhood or teenage years (so at least 15 years ago), it will be interesting for me to rewatch them after such a long time. I have probably already forgotten most of the plots.

I also plan to watch them in chronological order and rank them. The movies that I don't find on Disney+ I will watch somewhere else.

Charles Bronson, the stage name of Charles Dennis Buchinsky, (Ehrenfeld, November 3, 1921 - Los Angeles, August 30, 2003) was a great American actor.

Bronson began filming in the 1950s, with films like You're in the Navy Now (1951), and The People Against O'Hara (1951), without being credited. When appearing in the signs, he also used the name of birth (Buchinsky). He began signing Bronson in 1954, from the movie Drum Beat.

It began the success phase in the 1960s. Despite the relatively small participation in the film Seven Men and a Destination, it became known when this western came to be considered one of the best of the decade. After serving in adventure films such as Robur, the 1961 conqueror, Fugindo do Inferno (1963) and The Doomed Dozen, 1967, Bronson went to Europe in 1968, where action movie actors were getting better opportunities. This year he filmed The Cannons of San Sebastian, Once in the West and Farewell, friend, the latter with Alain Delon. They followed The Passenger of the Rain, of 1969, the visitors of the night, of 1970, Sun red, of 1971, again partnership with the French Delon, and finally The secret of the Cosa Nostra, of 1972, the last three directed by Terence Young.

Charles Bronson Star on the Walk of Fame. In the 1970s, Bronson would return to the United States and succeed as the greatest star of action films. His first major film in this new phase was "The Mechanic", 1972, in which he played the professional assassin Arthur Bishop, revived by Jason Statham in the film of the same name in 2011. [4]

In the film Escape audaciosa, of 1975, is shown a plan of escape of a prison, using a helicopter that, piloted by Bronson, lands in the patio of a prison and rescues the prisoner interpreted by Robert Duvall. The scene became famous in Brazil, as it would have inspired the escape of the bandit Escadinha, who used the same stratagem to flee from the Rio Grande prison in Ilha Grande in 1985. In the 1980s Bronson starred in several low-budget films and a lot of action with Cannon Films from 1981 to 1994, most of them directed by English filmmaker J. Lee Thompson, among the most prominent are: Death Wish II, Death Wish III , 10 to Midnight and Kinjite: Forbidden Games.

But the biggest "push" in his career was with the 1974 classic Desire to Kill, which consecrated him in the shoes of "Paul Kersey," a quiet New York City architect who has his wife dead and his daughter raped by three bandits and starts to act like a "vigilante", chasing the criminals in the streets at night.

Desire to Kill had four more sequences: Desire to Kill 2 (1982), Desire to Kill 3 (1985), Desire to Kill 4 - Operation Crackdown (1987) and Desire to Kill 5: The Face of Death (1994).

Most well-known characters: Gaita (or Harmonica), from Once Upon a Time in the West. Paul Kersey, from the film series Desire to Kill.

Οι 100αδες του BBC είναι από τις λίστες αυτής της δεκαετίας που συζητιούνται λίγο περισσότερο σε σχέση με τις πολλές που περνούν από τα μάτια μας, σχεδόν σε καθημερινή βάση πλέον. Φτιαγμένες έτσι ώστε να περιλαμβάνουν όσο το δυνατόν ένα ευρύτερο φάσμα, είναι αποτέλεσμα καλέσματος του βρετανικού μέσου προς έναν μεγάλο αριθμό κριτικών και ακαδημαϊκών, που σφραγίζουν την αυθεντικότητα της.

Μετά από τις αντίστοιχες των 100 ταινιών γενικώς αλλά και των 100 του 21ου αιώνα, το BBC κυκλοφόρησε το αποτέλεσμα της έρευνας που έκανε σε 209 ειδικούς, φροντίζοντας και για το ανάλογο diversity καθώς αυτοί βρίσκονται σε 43 χώρες ενώ η αναλογία ανδρών-γυναικών είναι 55-45%.

Το αντικείμενό της ήταν οι μη αγγλόφωνες ταινίες και οι αθάνατοι «Επτά Σαμουράι» του Ακίρα Κουροσάβα, πήραν μάλλον αναμενόμενα την πρώτη θέση, με τον «Κλέφτη Ποδηλάτων» του Ντε Σίκα και το «Tokyo Story» του Όζου να συμπληρώνουν την πρώτη τριάδα. Άλλη μια ταινία του σκηνοθέτη να βρίσκεται στην πρώτη πεντάδα, το «Ρασομόν» που είναι τέταρτο.

Οι συμμετέχοντες δήλωσαν από 10 ταινίες ο καθένας με αξιολογική σειρά, ώστε να προκύψει το τελικό αποτέλεσμα. Οι σκηνοθέτες που έχουν τις περισσότερες θέσεις μέσα στην 100άδα είναι ο Ίνγκμαρ Μπέργκμαν και ο Λουί Μπουνιουέλ (από 5), με τον Κουροσάβα να ακολουθεί με 4.

Σε άλλα ενδιαφέροντα στατιστικά της λίστας, τα γαλλικά αποδεικνύονται η πιο δημοφιλής γλώσσα, καθώς ακούγονται σε 27 ταινίες, πολύ μακριά από τις 12 όπου ακούγονται Μανδαρινικά και τις 11 των ιταλικών.

Από τις τέσσερις μόλις ταινίες που είναι σκηνοθετημένες από γυναίκες, το «Jeanne Dielman, 23 Commerce Quay, 1080 Brussels» της Σαντάλ Άκερμαν βρίσκεται στην υψηλότερη θέση – στο νούμερο 14.

Δύο φιλμ αυτής της δεκαετίας κατάφεραν ήδη να θεωρούνται κλασικά ώστε να έχουν θέση εδώ, η «Αγάπη» του Μίκαελ Χάνεκε και ο «Χωρισμός» του Ασγκάρ Φαρχαντί, ενώ από τη λίστα δε θα μπορούσε να λείπει ο Θόδωρος Αγγελόπουλος, έστω και αν βρίσκεται στην τελευταία θέση με το υπέροχο Τοπίο στην Ομίχλη.

The Steamroller and the Violin (1961, Soviet Union)

Founded in 1919, the Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography (VGIK) is located in Moscow. The school’s alumni boasts a number of famous directors, but perhaps its Soviet-era graduate roster contains the most acclaimed names: Sergei Eisenstein (1925′s Battleship Potemkin), Sergei Parajanov (1964′s Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors), Alexander Sokurov (2002′s Russian Ark). This roster also includes the great Andrei Tarkovsky (1966′s Andrei Rublev, 1972′s Solaris), who graduated from VGIK in 1960. As a graduation requirement from VGIK, directing students like Tarkovsky needed to complete a short diploma film to showcase their artistic abilities for prospective studios. Very few of these student diploma films are shown to audiences today, but Tarkovsky’s entry – The Steamroller and the Violin – is among the most widely distributed of these VGIK graduate movies.

Without too many connections and with graduation upcoming, Tarkovksy assembled his crew. In his late twenties and unknown to Soviet cinematic figures outside VGIK, Tarkovsky sought the acclaimed cinematographer Sergey Urusevsky (1957′s The Cranes Are Flying, 1964′s I Am Cuba) to assist on the project. Urusevsky declined, but so began Tarkovsky’s lengthy working relationship with fellow student, cinematographer Vadim Yusov (1962′s Ivan’s Childhood and Andrei Rublev). Andrei Konchalovsky, who later became an eminent director himself, signed on as co-screenwriter (Konchalovsky would also co-write Andrei Rublev) Another long-term, fruitful artistic collaboration between Tarkovsky and composer Vyacheslav Ovchinnikov – a Moscow Conservatory graduate in music composition – also began with The Steamroller and the Violin. Off this starting block were the elements Tarkovsky needed to spark what became a profound cinematic career – defying expectations of film structure and form, subverting the Soviet Union’s ideal of homogeneous collectivism in favor of individual artistic expression.

This tension is the humanistic center of The Steamroller and the Violin. Seven-year old Sasha (Igor Fomchenko) is a gifted violinist. His days are dedicated to practice, violin lessons, and music theory; he doesn’t interact with other children nor makes his own play. For that isolation he is bullied by local children, only to be saved one day by steamroller operator, Sergey (Valdimir Zamansky). With Sergey, Sasha has found an adult he can trust and walk around Moscow for the fun of it. While at the music conservatory, Sasha is chastised for his overuse of rubato (a musical term defined as a temporary disregard of the marked tempo at the discretion of a conductor or, in this case, an instrumentalist… this is used to shape musical phrases rather than to play music metronomically). Rubato can easily be abused by a soloist, but trust yours truly, a pianist-violinist, as I contend that Sasha is using rubato beautifully. Sergey, a World War II veteran, does not seem to have many people to talk to either, and enjoys listening to his new friend play his violin – without the constraint of a metronome. Sasha and Sergey make plans to watch a movie, but Sasha’s mother learns of the steamroller friend her son has made, and disapproves.

When shooting The Steamroller and the Violin, Tarkovsky was influenced by Italian neorealism (a movement which emphasized working/lower-class narratives shot on location, oftentimes employing non-professional actors, and commenting on post-War conditions in Italy) and Albert Lamorisse’s The Red Balloon (1956 short, France). The Red Balloon had caused a sensation among Western audiences with its complete lack of dialogue and – what seemed revolutionary in the 1950s – child protagonist. Lamorisse shot The Red Balloon through a child’s point of view, and that is what Tarkovsky wished to accomplish for The Steamroller and the Violin. In over three-quarters of an hour (more than double the length of typical VGIK diploma films), Tarkovsky creates a tone poem – those expecting a detailed plot need to abandon their beliefs that films need such things – that explores Sasha’s loneliness, his silent suffering towards his artistic repression, and the liberation of his friendship with Sergey.

That friendship (I don’t read it as a surrogate father-child relationship) with Sergey is where Italian neorealism enters and where things might seem derivative. Sasha and Sergey’s relationship feels almost airlifted from Bicycle Thieves (1948, Italy) – many of their moments walking around Moscow’s various neighborhoods (the film is almost like a travelogue without being tourist-y; this includes a few minutes showing Moscow’s urbanization by demolishing older residential buildings) share compositional similarities with De Sica’s movie. Where Tarkovsky might be quoting De Sica visually, The Steamroller and the Violin contains its own approaches to childhood. Where Enzo Staiola, as the son Bruno in Bicycle Thieves, shared in his father’s financial and moral desperation, Igor Fomchenko’s Sasha is a child only beginning to realize he has not had a typical childhood. Sasha’s longing is expressed through his instrument – the pace of the bow (okay, it is obvious Fomchenko cannot play the violin like almost every other actor who picks up the instrument, but one can hear it through the soundtrack), the use of rubato, the placement of silence. Regarding silence, part of a musician’s expressive authority includes how they use rests in music and how they let a piece die away at its conclusion – the relationship between the end of a piece and the silence that follows gives music its tragic dimensions. By playing his violin, Sasha has begun to accept how he will never be a child like his peers. With Sergey, there is an opportunity to claim a piece of what he never had.

Vyacheslav Ovchinnikov’s music – original compositions all played by Sasha – is often accompanied with shots of Sasha and Sergey’s surroundings. There might be a pool of water with late droplets of a recent rain making ripples on the surface, a flock of pigeons taking flight, an array of windows of an apartment building. These spaces are touched by the music, as well as Vadim Yusov’s camera – showing the viewer the beauty in the Muscovite ordinary. As Sasha plays his violin, these images are presented with a dreamlike, perhaps recollective, quality. The film’s final scene – a dream – are reflective of childhood innocence, of beliefs that what we want most in moments of suffering is the exact opposite of those very moments.

With this work, Tarkovsky was hired as a first unit director at Mosfilm – the premier studio during the Soviet era, and still one of the most prominent studios in Russia (and in Europe) today. His first non-student feature, Ivan’s Childhood, would be released the following year. The Steamroller and the Violin was dismissed by Tarkovsky himself late in life, as he urged audiences to ignore his earliest works – believing them to be the films of an untested, unwise youth. But this is not a pedestrian children’s film that could be made by anybody armed with a camera (or, these days, a phone capable of shooting video). Through silence, imagery, and use of music, The Steamroller and the Violin represents the maturation of one of the greatest Soviet/Russian directors in film – evoking the melancholy that defined Tarkovsky’s career, as well as passing joys.
