Rita Hayworth (then known as Rita Cansino) as the Russian dancer Tamara Petrovitch in the 1935 film, Paddy O’Day, starring Jane WIthers.  Jane had seen Rita danced and recommended her for the part.
Jane and Rita became lifelong friends and Jane gave the eulogy at Rita’s funeral.
″She (Rita) always had so much enthusiasm in her dancing that when I found out how shy she was, I was startled.”
At that time in 1935, Rita was being groomed at Fox Studios for the lead in Ramona, which went to Loretta Young when Daryl F. Zanuck took over and Rita’s contract was not renewed.

It’s the Christmas season 🎅🏻🤶🏻🎁🎄❄️⛄️ & what better way to start than by watching some Christmas movies 😊
Tonight I’m watching the 1934 movie “Bright Eyes” starring Shirley Temple, James Dunn & Jane Withers 😊
This is the movie that basically solidified Shirley’s success as a child star 😊 1934 was a big year for Shirley she had her breakout role in “Stand Up & Cheer” her first movie with James (Bright Eyes would be their 4th and final movie they did together) that got her signed to Fox then had her first starring role as Marky in a loan-out to Paramount in “Little Miss Marker” with Adolphe Menjou & Dorothy Dell and starred 2 other big films before this (“Baby Take A Bow” again with James along with Claire Trevor & “Now & Forever” with Carole Lombard & Gary Cooper) Bright Eyes was her first big hit internationally and for all of her achievements that year she was awarded the first ever Juvenile award given to child stars at the Oscars (the award would be given annually for the next 25 years) and she would be no.8 on the top 10 box office draws that year and would reach the top spot for the next 4 years after that 😊
This is also considered to be Jane Withers’ first big role as a child star as well playing the bratty Joy Smythe she would have success of her own not as huge as Shirley’s but still pretty big in films such as Little Miss Nobody & Paddy O’Day 😊
I’ll be watching a Christmas movie every night right up to the big day 😊😊 so stay tuned 😉😉

Ann Blyth and Rita Hayworth
Two of my favorites! This should be fun! ☺
Ann Blyth (AKA MY BABY)
1. How many movies I’ve seen them in
Ten! Mildred Pierce, Brute Force, Mr. Peabody and the Mermaid, Red Canyon, Thunder on the Hill, I’ll Never Forget You, The Student Prince, The King’s Thief, Kismet, and The Helen Morgan Story! I definitely haven’t seen all of her films, but a lot of them are hard to find and I keep watching the same few that I love over and over again instead of watching new ones!
2. How I feel about their acting
Okay, I want to be biased because she’s the apple of my eye, but she did kind of have a theatrical air about her and overacted sometimes. I still adore her, though!
3. How I feel about them as a person
I think she’s super sweet, an angel honestly! She loves her fans and her family so much, and I do know that we have differing political views, but she hasn’t said anything that I know of that I dislike!
4. My favorite role they played
Mr. Peabody and the Mermaid, for sure! I could watch that movie over and over again for the rest of my life and still be happy. It’s the one movie of hers that I always go back to.
5. My least favorite role they played
The King’s Thief. IT WAS SO BORING. She was fine in it and I loved some of her costumes, but there was nothing unique about it at all. I also can’t believe that they DUBBED A CLASSICALLY TRAINED SINGER for The Helen Morgan Story, and I don’t care for that film too much as a result.
Rita Hayworth (LOVE OF MY LIFE)
1. How many movies I’ve seen them in
Thirteen! Paddy O’Day, Only Angels Have Wings, Angels Over Broadway, The Strawberry Blonde, Blood and Sand, Tales of Manhattan, You Were Never Lovelier, Cover Girl, Tonight and Every Night, Gilda, Down to Earth, The Lady From Shanghai, and Pal Joey! I need to see waaaaay more, though!
2. How I feel about their acting
She was the greatest actress of all time, in my opinion. Hands down. The example that I always give is the scene in Gilda when she comes back to the Hotel Centenario after running away. It gets me every time, and I really think that it’s the best acting that I’ve ever seen on film.
3. How I feel about them as a person
Rita was so amazing! She was completely unlike her onscreen persona and actually really shy and sweet in real life, which honestly makes me love her even more. She’s just my favorite ever.
4. My favorite role they played
This is impossible! I think Rusty Parker in Cover Girl is the closest to my heart, though. Everything about it is perfect and she was so great with Gene! It’s definitely in my top three favorite films of all time.
5. My least favorite role they played
None, nope.
Thank you sooooooo much for these! I loved answering them!
Send me an actor!

My second set of Rita Hayworth (credited as Rita Cansino) as Nayda in the 1935 film “Charlie Chan In Egypt”.
Her seventh and last film of the year was “Paddy O’Day” with Jane Withers who became a lifelong friend and spoke the eulogy at Rita’s funeral in 1987.

These pictures of Rita Cansino (Hayworth) are for the 1935 film Paddy O’Day.
It’s claimed that Rita was Americanised because she wasn’t beautiful. The photos show that the claim is nonsense.
Harry Cohn, head of Columbia Pictures, was obsessed with her (and her beauty) and wanted her to be a star  - hence the makeover in a time when Latinos were not so well accepted. He recognised her star quality and the money she would make for Columbia.
Today she probably would have remained Rita Cansino and kept her gorgeous looks (and been a very successful star).

Rita Hayworth (Cansino) as Tamara Petrovitch in Paddy O’Day, 1935
This was Rita’s 7th and last film of 1935.  She would have only been 17 years old but looks amazing.

Rita Cansino (as she was known then before she became Rita Hayworth) as Tamara Petrovitch in Paddy O’Day, 1935, with Jane Withers.
Some 50 years later Jane delivered the eulogy at Rita’s funeral.

Rita Hayworth (credited as Rita Cansino) as Tamara in Paddy O’Day, 1936.
It’s hard to believe how much Rita improved and grew from Charlie Chan in Egypt the previous Year.
Jane Withers wanted Rita in the film and possibly that vote of confidence helped a lot.
Rita is very beautiful (absolutely stunning to be honest) and confident - sign of things to come. She was only 17 at the time of the filming but looked older.
Jane Withers became a lifelong friend of Rita and gave the eulogy at her funeral in 1987.

#classicmovienight tonight I’m watching the 1941 musical comedy “You’ll Never Get Rich” starring Fred Astaire & Rita Hayworth 😊 this is the first of two films that Fred & Rita did together with the 2nd being “You Were Never Lovelier” the following year in 1942 😊 This would be one of the first major films that Fred Astaire did without Ginger Rogers in which they did 9 films together during the 30s like Top Hat, Swing Time & Carefree after their last film in 1939 with “The Story of Vernon & Irene Castle” Fred left RKO & did some freelancing with other studios before moving to MGM in 1945 this is one of those films in which he teamed up with Columbia and starred alongside their biggest star (& his favorite dancing partner aside from Ginger Rogers) Rita Hayworth 😊 Rita started out at Fox as Rita Cansino in 1934 and only starred in minor typecast roles as the exotic foreigner in movies such as 1935’s “Paddy O’Day” with Jane Withers in which she played a Russian dancer and they tried to turn her into the next Dolores Del Rio but when Fox merged with 20th Century in 1935 and had new management under Darryl F. Zanuck the studio basically lost interest in her and didn’t renew her contract in 1936 so she did some freelance work and signed with Columbia later that year after having a small role in the 1936 film “Meet Nero Wolfe” starring Edward Arnold & that’s when Cansino became Rita Hayworth 😊 she started in some small roles & had her breakthrough role in the 1939 Howard Hawks classic “Only Angels Have Wings” starring Cary Grant & Jean Arthur 😊 Rita became a star and actually was one of the studio’s first major stars that they had since Columbia was a minor studio at the time during the 30s and was known for borrowing stars from other major studios but her success made the studio become more popular as the 40s rolled in and less of a minor studio & her success grew even bigger in films like Susan & God, Angels Over Broadway, The Strawberry Blonde & Blood & Sand and starred alongside some huge stars including Joan Crawford, James Cagney, Olivia De Havilland & Tyrone Power 😊
