Reading the story of how adalheid came to be, got me thinking I'd like to read other retellings set in this universe, for the other kingdoms. But then again this story was so rough I'm not sure I could take it.

What is Lizzy Reading?

Fantasy books have messed me up.

It’s no secret that I LOVE the morally gray villains. Or just villains in general.

I am currently reading Cursed by the incredibly talented Marissa Meyer, queen of fairytale retellings herself (Warning: Spoilers for Gilded and Cursed ahead).

Say what you will about the Erlking. He has his funny moments. That sometimes, when I’m reading, something he says or does makes me laugh and I’m like, “Wait, no. You’re the bad guy. Stop it.” It’s just the way he says some things, I imagine it to be said in the driest, most sarcastic way possible. Like this, for example:

Where Serilda stabs the Erlking in the back (literally) with a knife and he just goes, “Please,” he said, “remove the knife from my back. I would hate to ask Manfred to do it. Again.” (Cursed, p. 28).

The way I died laughing at this. Sometimes I have to remind myself that he’s the villain. He murdered five innocent children to get Serilda back and then trapped her behind the veil, uses her as leverage against Gild… He’s horrible. But there are moments when I think he’s absolutely hilarious. And it’s a problem, sometimes. 😂

auggie: ISTP, she has a curious and impulsive nature so she doesn't really stop to consider other people's feelings unless she gives herself time to think. i can see her having low empathy without really knowing it

presto: ESTP, she has an extremely playful personality but a serious approach to most things. a perfectionist who knows how to set realistic goals, but spends a lot of time thinking about what she could have done differently. verbalizes all her thoughts.

riffle: ISFJ, has an informal aura and tends to keep a polite distance between her and others. notoriously hard to get close to, but easy to get along and work with. she tends to follow through with her plans and leave things in the past.

serilda: ESTP, unpredictable and tends to go through all her thoughts in one go with little hesitation. her reactions and thoughts are hard to read. will choose violence if it seems like the right call

15. Has their personality changed at all since they were a child? Why?

she was probably way happier when she was a kid and didn't really think of herself as different from others until she got older and paid more attention to what people pointed out in her. caused a lot of self doubt, but she did keep her cheerful personality instead of continuing to fake it. also calmed down a LOT compared to running around on all fours and biting pencils, but kept some habits like saying thank you to the computer and biting her arms

Marissa Meyer said “mmmm her character flaw will be lying,” and she meant it 😂😂😂

I found it really impressive though, because lying annoys a lot of people I assume… for sure it annoys me, but I thought she did a great job of writing Serilda as a liar but still making her likeable. I loved her!

I love Serilda because that girl just keeps lying to get herself out of bad situations she created by lying only to find herself in even worse situations

The Erlking tipped his chair toward hers. “In the same way that you are not your god-gift … In the same way that you are not your mother or your father … We are not the vices that created us.”

She held his gaze a long time, debating whether or not to say the words that rose to the surface. In the end, she couldn’t help it. “So,” she said slowly, “you haven’t stabbed your arrows into the flesh of helpless mortals? And … you haven’t murdered children simply because they became inconvenient to you?” She shook her head. “Are you truly trying to convince me that you are not evil?”

She had not noticed that a wall between them had been opening up until it came crashing down once more. The Erlking slumped back in his chair and trailed his fingertip along the stem of his glass. “Forgive me for thinking you might understand.”
