Me: so what would you do if an evil king had trapped me in a deal to marry him because I had tried to trick him and then as punishment he killed everyone I loved or he would never let me return to my body that he had hidden somewhere in his castle that is only visible in its true form on full moons?
My partner: what the fuck is happening in the book you’re reading right now?

“When she talked, she could hardly keep herself from telling the most outlandish tales, as though her tongue could not tell the difference between truth and falsehoods. She began to trade in stories and lies herself, and while the other children delighted in her tales—so full of whimsy and enchantment—the elders knew better.”

Logic???????
I loved the gilded duology but I feel like all logic and reason and logic flew out the window. Somehow a ghost impregnated Serilda, and then The Erlking wants to convince the court the baby is his which means he impregnated a ghost and somehow the entire court believes that??? And somehow the Gods who created the entire world are less powerful than the Dark Ones and can be captured by them. They can bleed but the Dark Ones cannot. I love this series but 😵‍💫

I don't know what to think but...
Why do I see Velos - the sad boy god of death - as Murriel from arcane
Tumblr media
Like...Yes Velos is described as having dark hair and pearly skin snd a green robe or cloak and elegant features and...but why Murriel?
I mean it's not bad but...still...

Reading the story of how adalheid came to be, got me thinking I'd like to read other retellings set in this universe, for the other kingdoms. But then again this story was so rough I'm not sure I could take it.

What is Lizzy Reading?
Fantasy books have messed me up.
It’s no secret that I LOVE the morally gray villains. Or just villains in general.
I am currently reading Cursed by the incredibly talented Marissa Meyer, queen of fairytale retellings herself (Warning: Spoilers for Gilded and Cursed ahead).
Say what you will about the Erlking. He has his funny moments. That sometimes, when I’m reading, something he says or does makes me laugh and I’m like, “Wait, no. You’re the bad guy. Stop it.” It’s just the way he says some things, I imagine it to be said in the driest, most sarcastic way possible. Like this, for example:
Where Serilda stabs the Erlking in the back (literally) with a knife and he just goes, “Please,” he said, “remove the knife from my back. I would hate to ask Manfred to do it. Again.” (Cursed, p. 28).
The way I died laughing at this. Sometimes I have to remind myself that he’s the villain. He murdered five innocent children to get Serilda back and then trapped her behind the veil, uses her as leverage against Gild… He’s horrible. But there are moments when I think he’s absolutely hilarious. And it’s a problem, sometimes. 😂

Marissa Meyer said “mmmm her character flaw will be lying,” and she meant it 😂😂😂
I found it really impressive though, because lying annoys a lot of people I assume… for sure it annoys me, but I thought she did a great job of writing Serilda as a liar but still making her likeable. I loved her!
I love Serilda because that girl just keeps lying to get herself out of bad situations she created by lying only to find herself in even worse situations

MARRISA MEYER WHAT WAS THE POINT OF THIS HELLO?? IF NOT ENDGAME WHY SM CHEMISTRY??? WHY BEING VULNERABLE???
“His lips tilted to one side, but there was an unusual sadness as he peered back at her. “I want us to understand each other. I understand why you lied to me. Just as I understand you are more than your lies.”
At these words, the strangest warmth flooded through Serilda, spreading out until it reached her fingers and toes.
You are more than your lies.
The Erlking tipped his chair toward hers. “In the same way that you are not your god-gift … In the same way that you are not your mother or your father … We are not the vices that created us.”
She held his gaze a long time, debating whether or not to say the words that rose to the surface. In the end, she couldn’t help it. “So,” she said slowly, “you haven’t stabbed your arrows into the flesh of helpless mortals? And … you haven’t murdered children simply because they became inconvenient to you?” She shook her head. “Are you truly trying to convince me that you are not evil?”
She had not noticed that a wall between them had been opening up until it came crashing down once more. The Erlking slumped back in his chair and trailed his fingertip along the stem of his glass. “Forgive me for thinking you might understand.”
