what i like especially about the pronouns in the goblin emperor is that this language doesn't just have the T-V distinction (aka informal vs. formal second-person pronouns, in this case 'thou' vs. 'you'), it also has informal and formal first-person pronouns. having BOTH of these distinctions in the same language lets you fine-tune your tone by mixing and matching. with only one axis of formality, when you use informal pronouns, are you being familiar in an intimate way, or in an insolent or dismissive way? when you use formal pronouns, are you being polite or standoffish? you can't tell just from the pronouns; there's ambiguity. but a language where you can use a formal first-person pronoun in the same sentence as an informal second-person pronoun allows you to distance yourself (via the formal first) while also being familiar (via the informal second), thereby achieving the conversational tenor known to linguists as Fuck Thee Specifically.

Still thinking about how Beau and Fjord discussed Bell’s Hells because, yeah, on a meta level Bell’s Hells happens to be the party they are playing at this particular moment (and yes Marisha and Travis were clearly playing this for some laughs), but also there is this continued tension between Bell’s Hells being expendable, particularly as people who feel in many ways disconnected from Exandria, and intrinsically important. I don’t think the Accord set them up as fodder, but I can’t help but wonder if Keyleth and Vex and others had similar conversations of “really? These guys?” but also being unable to be the ones who could go themselves - not only because of the lack of Ruidiusborn to infiltrate, but also because of their obligations on Exandria itself. It's the kind of mission that requires you to accept that you might not be coming back, and most of the major leaders/heroes we know are too important on Exandria to not come back.

I do think the way to answer the question of “why Bell’s Hells?” is this occupation of space between expendable and important that gives them some advantages other groups wouldn't have for this particular mission. However, I wish that they, as a group, would (or had) grapple(d) with that means to them. Do they see life past this or have they accepted there is likely no return? Are they still caught up in their past resentment as nobodies who were left behind and forgotten or have they bought into their responsibility and power to shape what happens next for all of Exandria?
