I feel like once I start making my posts about lwj's character arc, I'm gonna insert some personal headcanons and project some of my experiences onto him because boy did we have similar upbringings (and also turned out nearly the same).

Now I've rewatched The Untamed having now read MDZS, here are some thoughts (in no particular order):

I found myself liking Jin Zixuan a lot more this time around - the first time I watched I found him kind of boring, but this time I really appreciated him for seemingly trying to be kind and fair despite being posh and privileged. I also found his awkwardness endearing... Oh, and Wei Wuxian is a total dick to him on several occasions, to be honest.

I also liked Su She a lot more this time.

I liked Wangxian a more in CQL than in the novel. I think this is because in the novel, WWX can't read LWJ very well, so sometimes I felt that novel!LWJ came off as somewhat of a flat character, whereas in the show the acting gives a better sense of what he might be thinking and feeling at any given moment.

The flashback episode scenes at Cloud Recesses where they're all young, alive and more or less happy are Painful to watch knowing what's coming next...

I really intensely dislike CQL's inclusion of the second flautist plot point. I think the story is more interesting and tragic if WWX really did just overextend himself and lose control.

On a similar note, I preferred that in the novel the curse put on Jin Zixuan was nothing to do with WWX at all - I think something that's got nothing to do with him being pinned on him anyway adds an extra level of tragedy to the story and adds to the themes the story is trying to put across.

I much preferred the greater level of moral ambiguity that the novel had - it made me really sad that WWX does some really awful things but eventually gets to live happily ever after having had a chance to redeem himself, whereas JGY never gets that chance and just dies horribly :(((

I really enjoyed the extra development that CQL gave to the female supporting characters! I feel like CQL gives a much better sense of how Wen Qing is as a person than the novel does.

JIN GUANGYAO THE CHARACTER EVER... Everything I could possibly say about him has already been said by people who are much smarter and better at writing than me, but I love his character so much... He does do some pretty awful things, BUT he gets put in a lot of impossible situations where he would have been absolutely pilloried no matter what he did, poor guy. "JGY did some awful things" and "JGY was genuinely badly treated by a lot of people" are statements that can and should coexist.

The other thing that I find really sad is that JGY meets his end because of the person he (at least in the novel) killed in self-defence and was genuinely afraid of, and not because of anything actually evil he did, like having his dad's pet serial killer murder twenty women... It's really not justice at all, but I think that's likely the point the story is trying to make.

Listen, I'm just so sad about A-Yao... Maybe people should have been nice to him and he wouldn't have committed crimes :)))

He lived so much of his life in fear of one kind or another and then dies humiliated :))) I'm fine this is fine :)))

I am continually astonished that the censors decided "no zombies for you" but something as gross and horrible as the way Jin Guangshan was bumped off is A-OK.

I think that given how different the structure of the drama is from that of the novel, introducing the Yi City trio earlier on was an understandable and sensible change to make.

I think I may need to scream forever about Nie Huaisang's character arc... The fact that by using LXC to kill JGY he's become as manipulative as the person he hated, and has also forced Jin Ling into becoming sect leader at a very young age, just like NHS himself was by the death of his brother, makes me Feel Things...

...As does the fact that his face as he leaves the Guanyin Temple in CQL is not the face of a happy man - it comes across to me as though he's realised that getting revenge hasn't really given him any sense of satisfaction at all. He must know that his peers are unlikely to really trust him again. I love how in his final scene he's dropped the buffoonish act totally, because now his plan has come to fruition he can outwardly be the person he has been inside for a very long time.

NHS is clearly just as capable of Rage as his brother once was, he just expresses it very differently.

Also, the fact that by the end of the story NHS is likely older than his brother ever got to be :)))

I wish CQL had had some way of working in the scene from the novel where NMJ had NHS' things burned - I think it was nice on getting some background on the brothers and on NHS' relationship with JGY.

JGY and NHS were clearly close once, so watching this happen to their relationship is so interesting to me... The betrayal on both sides is just *chef's kiss*... I actually think they're both quite similar in a lot of ways, but that's probably a topic for a separate post!!!

They are both such cool and interesting characters and I love them both!!

I wish I could go on about mdzs like I do about scum villain because while I absolutely adore both books Lan Zhan and Wei Ying are kind lacking the burning trashfire dragged through mud energy I need to properly shit post on them. Like yeah they're funny but they're not having a mental breakdown because they discovered that pegging and service tops existed as they fumble through basic healthy levels of communication level funny.

Like Wei Ying isn't going to get in a hairpulling fist fight at 3 am in the Wal-Mart parking lot because some bitch took the last copy of the lastest switch game sensation that was secretly on sale at this one location for almost half off and almost bite off a leg in the process. Screaming obsenties and yelling at airplane over and over as they break every object in their cart because despite being rich man is still going to do this

And lan wangji isnt learning how to fuck with his rivals car engine and break system so conveniently they'll have a minor accident that will delay their coffee date which would be oh so sad and can't be pinned on him despite the grease stains on his hand. Oh is this seat taken? Dont mind if I do hahahaha funny coincidence.

No they're too busy buying veggies at the local famers market holding hands and kissing wholesomeness. They have pta meetings and local kids soccer teams to cheer at and non sexually charged pottery class where Wei Ying is desperately trying to make matching mugs and tiny tea plates but they turn out lopsided so Lan Wangji makes bowls to match along with one of those things that latches onto the side and holds your chopsticks or spoon or whatever and they're so in love. They're so sincere. Gross

Like those bitches are too normal and wholesome. I cannot drag them through the mud. If I do they'll get cleaner despite this reverse car wash nonsense.

Reading TGCF: Chapter Twenty-Seven

For those who don't know, I am reading TGCF for the first time and sharing my thoughts!

I cannot believe it's only a Tuesday. This is the longest fucking week my guys. Simultaneously the longest week but also somehow I feel like I'm moving non-stop.

I was in a group chat with my virtual "colleagues" today, and it feels like this is the universal vibe; sleepy and yearning for the thaw.

Today, for maximum coziness I went with a non caffeinated apple and apricot tea.

The entirety of page 371 is so damn good. The conversations on the role, nature, and relationship people have with gods (ascended people) is just brilliant. I don't know if any of you watch critical role, but the current campaign revolves around this. The role of the gods, their control and power, and if their actions are justified. I love this shit so much. p371

I am glad we ended on this high note because with the rise there will inevitably be the fall. I am stoked to start book three tomorrow! Friday I will order book 4 as my little treat :)

I wish you would write a fic meme... You know that moment in CQL/MDZS post-time skip where Jiang Cheng is using Fairy to confirm that it's WWX and he freaks out and screams for either Lan Zhan or Shijie depending on which version? I would love to see you write a version of that where he calls out for Jiang Cheng instead, given his old childhood promise to protect him from dogs. Jiang Cheng bringing in a dog and WWX screams at him to protect him from dogs because that's his childhood instinct? I just think that would highlight the kind of crunchy fucked-up-but-the-love-is-still-there relationship dynamic you're so damned good at writing.

oooh, this is fun. I do not know that I could get more than a drabble/ficlet out of it, but it would be a crunchy ficlet, especially from jiang cheng's pov. must consider further

It’s such a specific kind of torture when you hear a song and immediately think about a pairing that goes perfectly with it but you’re in public and cannot physically react.

Like I’ve got such MDZS brain rot that I can’t listen to any remotely sad song without thinking about them, especially the 13 years that LZ spent alone. I recently heard Huracán in this new headspace and the lyrics could not be more suited to them.

Like the whole song is about losing the love your life and not knowing how to cope with the loss, which screams Lan Zhan post Wei Wuxian’s death and at the end there’s a bit where the dead loved one replies while the one thats alive keeps singing because she can’t hear him but he’s trying to tell her that he’s still there.

For example: lz’s part

I poured myself into looking for you without understanding

“Un huracán romperá el cielo desde mi garganta gritando te, donde estás cuando me haces falta?”

a hurricane is formed in the sky as I scream ‘you’re missing from me, where are you?’

Like dude, esp the last part as a reference to the brand he gave himself, and the wine he buys just in case and the punishment he gets for defending him. And the first line for the 13 years he place inquiry in the hopes that his soul would reply.

Wwx’s part

im here in your sadness, I’m here, I’m this loaf of bread

This compounded with it being laid overtop of the first singer’s pleas, it just calls to mind the inquiry and how no matter how much WWX would have liked to talk to him he couldn’t because his soul was too scattered. But I like to think if he had heard lz he would’ve done what he could to help him through it.
