Random TF2 Lore Headcanons

Scout was bullied throughout his time at school for being skinny and short (he was a rough 5'4" for like 3 years then shot up over his 17 y/o summer)

Soldier has paranoid personality disorder and is vaguely aware of it, but delusions got hands (can confirm lmao)

Heavy cares for Scout the most and provides a big brother role. He caught Scout drunkenly crying about missing his Ma and his brothers and Heavy couldn't help but sympathize. If anyone goes too far messing with Scout, they deal with Heavy.

I've said it before in other places but Spy smokes weed and makes personal edibles.

Before he was a sniper, Mick was a wandering backpacker over the world to "find himself". He's probably done shrooms once or twice during a hippie concert.

Engineer's guilty pleasure musician is Tom Lehrer. He'll never let anyone know but he enjoys the upbeat macabre humor.

Saxton Hale, the Administrator, Spy, and Miss Pauling know that Casper Bidwell and Jeremy Roberts are half-brothers.

Speaking of Bidwell and Jeremy, they have a semi-strained relationship. Bidwell was a shouter growing up and didn't understand why his brother "acted like that" (undiagnosed dyslexia and ADHD)

Medic actually does worry about the health of his coworkers, but empathy is weakness and weakness gets him back in college. Broke, miserable, and drafted into the war against his will.

Pyro likes the Beatles and has a massive collection of dolls, records, and posters.

Soldier accidentally is good friends with a lot of rocker celebrities- apparently everyone loves his party vibe. (Solly has done cocaine, thought it was mid :/)

Demoman is going deaf and has begged Engineer to give him hearing aids. He's terrified of not being able to hear his mom when he's at home.

Random headcanons for the TF2 mercs!!

Scout: ADHD hardcore, should probably be medicated for it, but isn't. This man cannot stand still for anything, he is always tapping his feet or fiddling with something. He definitely bites his nails, especially his thumbs. Repressed bisexual who is accidentally homophobic because he thinks he isn't supposed to like guys, and thinks everyone chooses to like the opposite gender. He's a surprisingly good artist, and he has dyslexia. That mixed with dropping out of highschool made him somewhat illiterate, spelling is hard, and so is reading any big words.

Soldier: Jack of all trades, he has had every job possible, but if he weren't in love with going to war, he'd probably settle on properly running a raccoon sanctuary. He is the reason why Medic had to invent a cure for rabies. Definitely thinks that being a lesbian just means that you like women, regardless of gender, he refers to himself as a Lesbian after learning that Pauling Identifies as one.

Pyro: Probably not even a human, uses any and all pronouns. They're really smart, despite acting childish, and are the one who built their flamethrowers. Probably collects stickers. Would definitely watch MLP and drag the other mercs into watching it with them, Pinkie Pie is definitely their favorite of the mane six. They draw a lot, and are pretty good at it whenever they want to be, they just prefer drawing silly things. Their room probably smells like burnt plastic and gasoline.

Demo: Only goes sober whenever shit gets super, super serious, like one of the other mercenaries that he cares about gets hurt. He's got a really strong caretaking instinct that gets drowned out by drunken recklessness. He's a total lover, and definitely the type of guy to kiss the homies goodnight. It takes a LOT to actually get him drunk drunk, like, I'm talking ungodly levels of alcohol that would probably kill the average person. He's Spy's drinking buddy, and probably knows the most about Spy's background from listening to his drunken ramblings about regrets and how he wishes he was a better father. Demo probably knows a lot about most of the other mercs, just because he's a good listener and a vault whenever it comes to sensitive information. He's also really fucking smart. Probably pansexual tbh, just based on vibes.

Heavy: He gets nervous whenever he has to help out any of the more 'delicate' mercenaries. He knows he's ridiculously strong, and he has excellent control of himself, but he can't help but feel like he's handling glass whenever he's helping out any of his injured teammates, especially when it comes to Scout or Spy. He's super fucking protective of all of his team though, and would absolutely crack skulls if anything happened to any of them. He is the only person other than Medic who is allowed to touch Archimedes. Probably bisexual with a preference towards men.

Engie: He's usually pretty polite, but can be one of the most brutal out of any of the classes. He's definitely autistic with a special interest in machines. He probably wants to capture one of the mvm robots just to run tests and see if they're sentient. Low-key god complex, like, moreso than medic, he's just super humble about it. He definitely talks to all of his machines. He's 100% a trans man, I can see him as being demisexual.

Sniper: Definitely autistic, he's probably got a shitload of random animal information. Total arachnophobe, but only towards small spiders. Hand him a tarantula and he's fine, but show him a stick covered in baby spiders and he's going to probably kick it as far away from himself as possible and run away. He adores lizards of all kinds, and probably used to lay on the ground watching them all the time as a kid. This man can't use a kitchen for shit, but he manages to make anything he cooks over a fire absolutely delicious, he probably refuses to share though. Probably Asexual. Has a shitty taxidermy rat in his camper that he's unnecessarily proud of, and he probably collects bones. Super into oddities and weird little knick knacks, and he still has all of his baby teeth that he keeps in a little jar on a shelf. Can't run for shit, but could walk for hours if need be. Likes doing arts and crafts, he knits in his free time, and almost always has a sewing kit with him.

Medic: Knows a little about every different medical field, he just sort of studied up on whatever piqued his interest. DOES have a PhD in medical science, he just lost his license to legally practice in a hospital or doctor's office. Gay, probably a trans man. Has definitely experimented on himself before, giving himself different deadly diseases and whatnot just to challenge himself to make a cure before he dies. Also autistic. Spoils the fuck out of his birds, and would probably Frankenstein together a human body for Archimedes if he could figure out how.

Spy: Bisexual genderfluid icon. Usually only gets caught because he's being way too much of a cocky showoff. Definitely wears eyeliner and says that it 'helps him see better' when it's bright out, even though it's 100% just a fashion statement. Has a collection of antique cigar boxes and lighters.

I personally think Demo and Soldier took a particular liking to the entry, "Converting a shotgun into a grenade launcher." They're just so silly like that. Anyways, once he started making mustard gas, the other mercs decided that it would be a good idea for the book to go missing. Little did they know he had eight separate copies of this book. He was very proud when he finished the book. Everyone was concerned at the new horde of weapons and drugs Demo had, until he offered to share, then they were thrilled.

Hear me out! Even though this man has eleven PhDs, he doesn't like to read long drawn out novels. He doesn't like most of the "classics" or even most new books. Don't get me wrong, he loves to read. He just doesn't get why books can't be simple. He read Charlotte's Web when he was a kid, and it just kind of stuck with him. It was one of the only books he read that didn't really feel like a chore to read. He finds himself rereading it frequently. You'll catch him reading it to Pyro too, I personally think him and Pyro read books together a lot.

Would you believe me if I told you this man is a huge fan of Greek mythology? He has no clue why, he was never interested in it when he was younger, or even up until he read the read The Odyssey. He picked it up from a library, it had a really pretty gold cover, so he read the description and figured why not? When I tell you this man was so obsessed with this book while he was reading it for the first time. He just like, wouldn't stop reading it? Like the other mercs were slightly worried that he was reading all the time. Because, sure, he probably reads more than the others, but this was excessive even for him. He loves the escape it provides, he likes the adventurer, he likes the fantasy. He just really loves this book.

Are we really super surprised that Medic is a fan of The Tell Tale Heart? He's also just a fan of Poe in general, but alas, I will put that away and focus on the book itself. Medic loves reading the main characters' descent into madness. He also loves the idea of someone who seemingly has a lack of guilt be riddled with it, though a different medium than actually feeling guilty. (i hope that made sense) He's just a huge fan of artists using their mediums to inflict psychological torture on their creations. Also lets be honest if Medic ever went fully insane he'd be like the main character from the book.

HEAR ME OUT AGAIN! This man doesn't read, he has ADHD and dyslexia, how can you expect him to? But! When he was in high school it was required reading and this man struggled with like the first page, but it was really important for his grade so he tried literally everything to read it, and once he actually found out a way to be able to read the book, he was hooked, as weird as that seems. He thinks old English is hilarious, and actually liked the romance, he cried when Romeo and Juliet died. He can't tell you why he loves it so much though, it just stuck in his brain and never left. He even went out and bought his own copy of the book, it remains hidden as to not alert the other mercs to his love of it, reads it once a month.

So, I know this is Snipers headcanon, but..... I gotta talk about Scout really quick. So Scout has read The Outsiders, and he loved it! (Not as much as Romeo and Juliet, but enough to also have bought the book.) So one day, he's talking to Sniper about books, and is utterly shocked at the idea that not everyone has read The Outsiders, so he literally reads this book with such conviction to Sniper, (Sniper claimed he would read it on his own but Scout know he absolutely would not.) So Sniper begrudgingly listens to the book, and actually finds himself drawn into the story.

Spy- Dracula (Bram Stoker)

Spy would be a vampire if he could be, wouldn't ever admit that though. Okay I'm half kidding. I think Spy really likes this book for the drama of it all, the fact that it never stays the same for long, the way it borders on actual horror, but is too dramatic to actually be scary, he just ugh, he loves it so much. I think he first found the book by it just being in his home when he was a kid. His mom just left it sitting somewhere and he just went and picked it up because he was bored and just started reading. I think he was originally scared by the book, probably cried the first time he read it. Then years later, he just remembered the book that traumatized him as a kid and he was like, it can't be that bad, I'll read it again to prove younger me was a coward. So he reads it and just falls in love with the book.

Uh, so, do I need to put a hear me out for the third time? So I already headcanon that he likes Jane Austen, I'm so torn between him actually understanding and grasping hidden meanings and deep plot point and him just smiling and nodding along to the silly drama unfolding. Maybe both? His mom actually read it to him when he was younger, because it was her favorite book. The memories of his mom talking about and reading the book also contributes to the reason he likes the book so much. He has his mom's worn copy of the book and loves it. He'll reread it at least twice a month, always thinking about the first time he was introduced to it. Loves everything about the book.

Dont get them started with all the things they love about this book. If they could talk, they'd rant for hours. Who am I kidding they still rant for hours even though no one can understand them. They love the whimsy and insanity of Wonderland. They love the Cheshire cat and the Mad Hatter. They read this book every day. It's not even just their favorite anymore. It's the only book to ever exist 😭 On days when Pyro isn't able to read the book, they beg Engie to read it to them. Engie doesn't mind. He loves to see Pyro get all happy when he agrees.

I'm gonna be 100% honest and explain a trend I've noticed, and it's probably gonna get me crucified by both sides of the aisle. Now, this is a generalisation of course, so there's always exceptions to the rule. That said, from what I've usually seen of these people that are extremely toxic about these ships (and note this doesn't apply to normal SniperSpy/SniperScout shippers, just those that are extremely toxic about their OTP)–

Both of these types of toxic shippers want to fuck Sniper. As in, the shipper themselves wants to fuck Sniper. And they treat Scout or Spy as a self-insert/proxy for themselves. SniperSpy shippers are often in their very edgy teenage phase and act like badarse tryhards and identify with Spy because they're pretentious and convinced they're fancy or some shit. Or they're just pretentiously French-Canadian. SniperScout shippers often identify with Scout—they're usually loud, transmasc and overperforming masculinity because they think they have to make up for something, white, and maybe have a learning disability (autism/ADHD/dyslexia—it's usually ADHD and this is the autism webbed site so that's kinda expected here, said as an autistic person).

Red Medic aka Josef Ludwig was a trauma surgeon, his fascination with anatomy and medical science and just science in general has always lead to morbid curiosity. However under contract he could not ethically preform the more gruesome experiments, until he witnessed a male coworker harassing a female patient who needed a liver transplant.

Throwing all sense of logic out of the window he knocked the guy out and began to harvest his liver and with an almost failed test got the transplant to be a success very carefully making sure his crime was not witnessed.

With the man still unconscious he decided to give into his curiosity and replaced the mans now missing liver with one from a monkey, where he got it no one knows. The man was extremely sick and passed away as the women was doing better recovering in the hospital.

Giving into his sick desires he tested on anyone who harmed or harassed his patients and innocent bystanders, until he got caught and his license revoked due to removing an entire skeleton from a horrible person. Even if he wasn't caught exactly in the act the new skeleton was in the office.

Instead of being arrested due to large fear he was sent to America to work with red team.

Being Red teams only doctor he does preform medical examinations to check on the well-being of his teammates, he also still preforms gruesome experiments even getting parts from unknown sources, at least 3 on the team have a second brain in some part of their body.

He has the head of a spy clone in his fridge not knowing how exactly he's still alive and fascinated by it, sometimes running tests on the head when he has time.

Despite his mentality he does care about his team, he sees them as loved ones if not sometimes annoying. He has experimented on himself a bit adding 8 more souls to his body thankfully none from the team.

Rosen of Chroneria: Chapter 3

A bit of a mechanical run-down, first, as I am going to open with how I finally set up Rosen's Fate Aspects and Stunts! I also shifted his skill pyramid around since I think I learned a lot about him from Inkling to Final Draft.

I went almost completely seat-of-the-pants with oracles, and had a Celtic cross tarot reading that came pretty darn close to 100% actuality...

Let's take a look at those, for those who are interested in the mechanics - if that sounds boring, go ahead and scroll til you see STORY START in all-caps!

This is the final load-out for Rosen's Aspects.

High Concept: The Infernal Stranger of Chroneria Trouble: Hungry Hungry Hedonist Relationship: Judge Regent Alistair Has My Sworn Protection Free Aspects: Made Of Diamonds in a World Of Clay I Rise To Demolish Any Challenge…ANY Challenge

I think that High Concept is a lot of fun for giving him a very "Conan The Adventurer" vibe, and that Trouble aspect is good for reflecting that maintaining a huge semi-demonic bodybuilder will probably require a lot of calorie intake, and the concept of a "hedonist" in the Port of Lamour, with all its wealth and temptation, will create some interesting resistance for him.

Relationship-wise, I think the dice rolls really chose Alistair and his wife to be an anchor, to familiarize the Stranger to Chroneria in time.

For his free aspects, the "Made of Diamonds" one is dual-sided; maybe he could invoke it to get a better roll against environmental damage or an attack shift! Or, for comedic effect, maybe he sometimes just sometimes pulls a door off its hinges. I think about how this reflects on the character, and decide that his Stealth skill is probably not as good as I originally thought it could be, and make him worse at it, making him better at Empathy, instead, as he seems to rather easily care about the people entering his life.

The last aspect was fun to think about as the classic "warrior applying his sense of honor to every situation" - challenging Rosen to a duel? HE ACCEPTS! Challenging Rosen to see if he can move your couch in under 5 minutes? HA-HA, YOU WILL REGRET DOUBTING HIM! Challenging Rosen to see just how many pancakes he can eat? STAND BACK AND PREPARE TO BE AMAZED!

For his Stunts, I make a mock-up of a Barbarian's "Reckless Attack" feature from D&D, gave him the "Enduring" stunt to reduce the severity of a moderate physical consequence to a mild consequence once per session, and gave him a custom ability called "First Impression" to give him a +2 bonus when dealing with less familiar people who would be influenced by Rosen's heroic stature.

With that all aside…STORY START!

Rosen will have zero consequences and full refresh/stress for any further shenanigans.

I had ran a divination event to figure out how Chelise will feel, and used it to focus up and push myself to improve my accuracy on reading the Fate Chart dice rolls - I have a bad mix of ADHD/dyscalculia/dyslexia! It makes me constantly confuse that a LOW roll is a "no" and a HIGH roll on Fate Chart dice is a "yes" - I want to get better at that, and now you can join me, haha.

Operating on a 7 Chaos Level after the attack, at least for immediate feelings.

I got a "yes" when asking if Chelise would be more angry about this than scared; she is angry about things, but she only took one stress from a very non-lethal attack via the Sky Legion Scout, and was more incapacitated than "zero hp." She also understands the complexities of this weird situation, and further questions reveals that she wouldn't ask Alistair to get RID of Rosen, because while he's why they were attacked, he is also why they're safe.

I go for a Passage/Domain roll to dig for any potential clue-ins on her anger that I am only taking at face value Q: Domain Roll! Why is she angry? A: (I roll a Green d20 to center the Sky Legion) Power (A Purple d20 for her Environment) Weakness (my standard NPC d20 for her sense of self) Earth

My interpretation from this is that she married a powerful man as a way to keep herself close to power - but the guys who came in were even MORE powerful, could have easily teamed up and taken out her husband and his men if Rosen hadn't been there, and exposed that her home isn't as well-protected as they had felt. This has brought her "back down to earth".

In lieu of all this, the assassination, the infiltration of her home and her being attacked, her husband also being attacked…

Q: Would she demand that Rosen be used for their personal defense? (VERY Likely) A: 18 -EXCEPTIONAL yes - this is very definitely a DEMAND and not a REQUEST! "You went out and found a big dangerous man to bring home? Fine, but he's going to make sure this doesn't HAPPEN to me again!"

Alistair certainly loves his wife, and would have a hard time saying no to her, but would he ask Rosen? This is a huge hunky beefcake who he DOESN'T know THAT well, and who would suddenly be around his wife all the time, even when he isn't, and Alistair has that sense of "this me wife" machismo about Chelise.

Q: Would Alistair agree to this? (50/50) A: 36 -Yes, he is his wife's bitch.

Let's play with the Fate dice!

Alistair would like to make it a request to Rosen that he do this, and Rosen wouldn't be likely to turn it down for any reason, but: Rosen will see this as a chance to have access to someone who may be more amenable than Alistair to give him details on how to hunt down this assassin Rosen had decided he should PROBABLY just kill.

Alistair's Empathy (+2) versus Rosen's Deceive (-1!!!).

This reads to me as a situation of "hey pal, could you do this for me?" only to get a "…suuuuuuuuure…heh heh" kind of answer. Alistair absolutely sense that there's an ulterior motive, and will use Rapport to try and coerce the truth out of Rosen (Will to resist saying too much?).

Alistair's Rapport (+2) versus Rosen's Will (+5).

They're at a stalemate and will need a tie-breaker to win a 2 out of 3! Alistair knows that Rosen is acting suddenly cagey, and needs to know that his wife will be safe if he is entrusting her to Rosen.

I originally ended this with a final roll, but now that I have all of the details on the table, I think this is absolutely a sort of "GM compel" against Rosen's aspect, "Judge Regent Alistair Has My Sworn Protection". Rosen accepts, gaining a bonus Fate Point to spend.

From here, I did a Tarot reading to figure out what this day holds, since I didn't play for a bit and was feeling a little disconnected. I started with a single card pull and got the 2 of Cups! That feels like it relates to how this is about to complicate Chelise and Alistair's marriage, so I set out to do a full Celtic cross reading.

My overall take-away from it is that while all three of them are currently carrying their problems separately, and their over-reliance on the current "industry standard" or their lack of knowledge on their new undertakings is leaving them uncertain, and will end unsuccessfully if they don't focus on one thing and work to resolve it.

I roll a Passage Domain for all the major elements of the plot at the moment with the following results:

Rosen - 20; Power (I am reading this in Francesca Fiore's voice) Alistair - 14; Stillness Chelise - 10; Portals (again?!) The Assassin - 14 (again?!?!) The Remaining 2 Sky Legion Scouts - 4; Air (…) The Good Ship Justice's Crew - 6; Light and lastly, the Port of Lamour - 8; VIOLENCE!

I count on not Alistair and the Assassin to be inactive, with the former stepping out to do his actual job, with the latter being a very serious focus. I also decide to ask the Fate Chart, though it is Unlikely: is the Assassin known to the present characters (though they may not KNOW, you know)? With a 75, that's a no. I think that wherever the Good Ship Justice's crew is, they're probably trying to keep out of trouble (keeping it 'light'), and the last Sky Legion scouts got their information and returned home.

A clarification Tarot card for Chelise revealed the 2 of Swords. I start asking some oracle questions. 50/50 odds, on a Chaos 7

Q: Is the portal magic? A: 69. Heh. Shit, that's a yes.

Q: Is the Sky Legion making another attempt on the house once repairs are started while Alistair's away? A: 17, for a nearly EXCEPTIONAL yes.

Q: Are the Legion Scouts out for blood? A: 51: yeah.

I return to the map and begin writing up aspects, and give a bonus Aspect to Alistair for that nat 20 Power roll, because why not! I've been playing a lot of Fallout NV so I just give him the "Well-Rested" aspect for the scene, with one free invoke.

I roll 2d6 to find that there are 7 guards of Alistair's here, and given that the Sky Legion scouts are out for blood (and I've figured out how to adjust the challenges of their character sheets, oops oops), I roll them 3d6: 13 of them, pretty heckin' unlucky.

One last roll reveals that 3 different portals open. One last Fate question of: are the Scouts mostly inside? A 95 means no, so we have staggered waves…but are Alistair's guards mostly inside? I think it's unlikely given that they are watching the grounds, not operating under magical presumptions, and I think Chelise would PUSH for her home to still feel non-militant inside. An 84 on that roll means no - so I break up the Conflict.

I need to figure out a better way to track the rules of combat in Fate, especially for the mini mob fights I have been doing or if my homebrew rules are doing okay at this for my needs, but this fight still wound up very dramatic!

How it started? The minor guards all rocked their defense rolls, the Sky Legion whiffed all their attack rolls, and there was a great moment for Rosen to ask Chelise if her home life is always this exciting, before he wiped out 3 guys with one attack roll. Chelise got to answer "NO IT ISN'T" before fleeing.

How it ended? Only two of the House guards survived, Rosen took on a moderate and a severe consequence to resist some pretty heavy damage, killed all 13 scouts, chasing the last two into the streets, and Chelise was left trying to figure out how to girlboss the remaining guards into making order out of the mess of corpses in the guarden while also sending out word to Alistair that she is having The Worst day.

Rosen is going to use his stunt, Enduring, to reduce the Moderate Consequence of "Gut Stab" down to a Mild Consequence of "Flesh Wound", and is totally out of fate points.

Chelise makes a +3 Rapport role to get the guards to regroup, gathering up the Sky Legion scouts, and Rosen makes a +1 Empathy roll to do well enough to figure out he ought to help. One of the guards is sent out to bring word to Alistair, which leaves Chelise, a minor NPC with no fighting or healing abilities, with trying to just gather Rosen back inside so he can lay down or something, given that he is still holding on to a severe injury that needs to be healed to recover.

This has ramped things up further, so let's do an 8 Chaos…and consider this scene closed.

I have just a few more questions of the Fate chart and may have some subsequent world-building to do afterwards, and because I WANT it to be so, we'll do Likely.

Q: Will Chelise be able to get Rosen to a Healer? A: 38, yes!

Q: Will they be trustworthy? 50/50 A: 52, yes.

Q: Is it magical healing? 50/50 A: 25, yes.

Lastly….will the violent atmosphere of Port Lamour complicate this? 50/50 A: 36….yup.

Lots to consider…but I think this is more than I thought I'd get into just for today, and a lot to resolve next time. I'll definitely have to spend a bit more time figuring out the best way to stat combat out and what sort of extras/etc healing require.

you know, your Scout interp at times comes off as having bpd, with the impulsivity and emotional turbulence, fear of rejection or abandonment (although that one can be chalked up to his dad leaving), extreme irritability, low self esteem and distorted sense of self, and overall having a hard time with relationships outside of family... I just find those things about him really relatable and appreciate your portrayal of him a lot

yeah all of that tracks in a major way. i think in a lot of ways that’s something that sorta like. sets my fic apart from a lot of others is that i just consistently write all the mercs (scout in particular) as having assorted symptoms for stuff.

like i’m not sure how to explain it but i feel weird just saying “(insert tf2 character) has (insert mental health diagnosis)” the majority of the time, and i tend to go for the show-don’t-tell approach with it, because of the trend of like. like “scout tf2 has adhd because he’s baby :) because he’s baby infant child :) he’s just so helpless and stupid he’s baby he has adhd :))” or like “spy tf2 has ocd because he’s just so particular abt dirt on his suit lol!! he’s just such a stuck up asshole!! haha he’s such a germaphobe weirdo lmao!!”, it just really grates on me a lot, y’know? i’d rather write the characters as having any number of mental health situations going on and have people be able to go “oh hey, sniper has anxiety and a dissociative disorder in this just like me” over spelling it out and having it come off as shallow or performative

and i know i’m also being vaguely hypocritical when i say that because i do sorta casually dunk on certain characters for stuff that could be attributed to having any given mental illness but i should stress that it’s also because i tend to do that to myself and it just. leaks through. which isn’t an excuse but i wanted to note that i’m aware there’s some internalization going on there and it is absolutely something i’m actively working on as a person

i should also mention that it’s been a thing before where i wrote a character in a way that someone went “wow this character has (insert specific mental health phenomenon) like me that’s really neat!” and i go “wait i was just projecting is that not the standard experience? uh oh” so like we’re all just really out here learning shit sometimes
