I still wish Holby had done more with the parallels between Henrik's relationship with John and Sara's relationship with Fredrik. A conversation between them about their experiences and mistakes with the men they were in love with would have been really good character work.

I hope Holby treats Henrik kindly though. THIS is the love he’s been waiting for: the love of a grandfather for his grandson, and it’s beautiful.

This could all have such a positive ending, without Henrik having to wallow in a bucketful of misery AGAIN, so please Holby, don’t fuck it up. 

I’m more scared for him than ever tbh. It could easily be snatched away too. 

Now I hope Sara isn’t the “evil witch” but an anxious mother who has turned to him for help, and gets it.

Holby City S20 E04 - Hanssen Is As Hanssen Does

Oh my god, my poor baby Hanssen!  I just want to fold him into a massive hug (I’m 5′6′‘, so that would actually look pretty bloody funny, but still)...

Conversation between Gaskell and MacMillan - “How do you think he’s coping?”  “With Henrik, it’s impossible to tell.”  I totally dispute that, I admit that as viewers, we were permitted to see far more signs of his falling apart than the staff were, but the additional awkwardness of his manner, the attempted shirking of his pastoral responsibilities - how can no one see that he’s falling apart?  And even if they are that stupid, surely since he’s not only just lost his son, but also had to face up to the fact his son is a murderer, one might imagine he’s got a few things to deal with?  Grrr!

Sara coming back - my first instinct was WTF?!  Then, of course, we had the Essie reveal, and I have to say, that woman has guts to come back and face everyone.  I was never a massive fan of the character (to be honest, I always thought she was conniving and manipulative, I admit, I was wrong...), but I do still admire the character for that.  Although any respect I gained toward her in the earlier part of the episode, I snatched away when she was such a stone cold bitch to Hanssen by refusing to allow him to remain in Oscar’s life.

I did rather like Hanssen’s visit to Ric in jail.   I think Ric is the first person to in any way absolve Hanssen of blame regarding Fredrick’s actions.  I liked that, although it was no help at all, Ric had Hanssen’s back.  (Serena would too, if she were there.  Oh, hopefully she will in a couple of weeks ;-)

Loved the Sacha and Jac scene.  Those rare and short scenes are like gold dust with a sprinkling of fairy magic!!!

I didn’t like Gaskell taking over the memorial when Hanssen couldn’t continue.  Why the hell should he?  Raf died on his first day, he didn’t know him, and he throws his weight around like he’s CEO.  Oh, shit, if Hanssen has vanished, maybe he will be.  Not good at all.  Still, he’s found his sycophant in Meena, so he’ll be a happy man at least.

WTF is Dom doing on AAU??!!  I feel like I’m going insane - unless you’re Jac Naylor, that’s it, you’re on AAU now!!!  Help me!  Give me stability!  Please, stop the merry go round!

More specifically, this is about how I was thinking about how Maja refers to Sara as Fredrik's "partner" in "Never Let Me Go", rather than "wife", which seems to imply they weren't married yet then, and then they're definitely married by the time of "How Loud It Is". So presumably they got married offscreen at some point between 2013 and 2017.

But if Henrik hadn't been at Fredrik's wedding, that feels like the sort of thing Fredrik would bring up every five minutes during their storyline because of his grudge against Henrik. And as far as I remember, nothing like that was ever said. So therefore, I assume Fredrik and Sara got married while Henrik was still in Sweden, rather than after he returned to Holby.

If I only have one hobby, and there is an argument to be made that that is indeed the case lol, it's reaching conclusions about fictional characters based on other things about those fictional characters. My mind just loves it.

Holby City S19E48 - How Loud It Is

Oh, but I’ve been looking forward to this episode with glee, and mostly, it didn’t disappoint.

One thing that struck me - and it’s something I missed when Fredrik was last on the show (mostly as a patient), is how amazing the casting is!  I was definitely pretty sold that he could be Hanssen’s son.

The next thing that struck me - hard - is that I really don’t like the fact that Hanssen’s son is a bad lot!  I mean, we knew about the Pharma debacle, but the swab thing was a bit immediate!  So, he’s clearly there with an agenda, but who was he talking to on the phone?  I also really didn’t like his wife much.  On the surface of it, she seemed ‘nice’, but I certainly didn’t get a nice vibe from her.  Ooh, shudder.  Hanssen’s facial expressions were absolutely spot on all throughout the episode, but I think one of my favourite moments was when he and Fredrik first came face to face - he was positively vibrating with tension, and it was delicious.  All the kudos to Guy Henry.

Whilst on the Hanssen topic, I had a warm and squishy moment at his scene with Dom on the bench, when Dom finally admitted that he was hooked on steroids.  I do like the paternal moments Hanssen shows his staff, even if technically they’re terrible CEO moves!  (And I still find Dom’s face slug to be disconcerting).

So, a potential merger with St James, hey?  Ok, silly to pretend it’s a surprise!

Lovely to see Jason back, but it did seem strange without Serena or Bernie.  Hope we see more of him, even if he does make me miss my faves even more.

Blondie Zosia!  Fair took me aback!  Still, at least equilibrium was more or less restored when she re-appropriated the work-bun!  She seemed a little manic this ep, and there was the moment when she grabbed the leaflet from Jac’s desk about the Yale opportunity she’d passed up.  I have to say, I don’t like her in Neuro, I far preferred her in Cardio.  Wonder if she’ll ever return?  Doesn’t hurt the show to have her stay in neuro, though, a new bunch of COTW storylines open up that way.

OK, silly question here, but do we actually know what’s going on with Guy?  Coz the BBC did their ‘helpline for anyone affected by Guy’s storyline’, but I still don’t feel sure of what Guy’s storyline actually is!

So, on to the point of the episode which was a massive FAIL for me - and that was Donna decorating the office with all that ridiculously inappropriate for a hospital tat, and Ric just standing by, having seen that she’s wasted HOURS of NHS pay and working time just pratting around, and he doesn’t say a word!  And everyone thinks it’s funny and cute, and witty, and in actual fact, it’s ridiculous and awful and shocking!  Na-nah!  Bad, bad story.

(And then of course, after the ep aired, we had that trailer for Ollie and Zosia’s wedding  :-0 )
