John (about the night he stopped Henrik from drowning himself but was tempted to join him instead): I nearly died! I was alone, in the dark, and I nearly died. And it made me think.

Henrik: Well, yes, natural. I think sometimes. Well, lots of times.

John: About what I want. About who I want. You know what I mean?

Henrik: Yeah!

Henrik: *gives John a puzzled look*

Henrik: ...No.

John: About who I want.

Henrik: Oh, right, yeah!

“What areyou doing?” inquired John, staring at Henrik.

Camping inthe woods was an event he had looked forward to as he had spent so little ofhis life outdoors in fresh air and surrounded by nature. He wasn’t awfully fondof the mosquitoes and itchy foliage, but he believed it was a fair trade offfor solitude: away from the unimportant people, the people who were not part ofhis new family.

Yet Henrikwas not taking things too well in his stride and had complained ever since theyarrived in the early hours of the previous day.

“Trying toescape the blasted sun!” spat Henrik. He was hidden behind a large, red, tartanpicnic blanket, only it wasn’t on the ground where it was supposed to be butbeing strewn across low-lying boughs of the tree closest to their campsite.

John’s eyes surveyedthe scene, jumping from the lump that was Henrik to the other linens that hadbeen already set up. A few towels, throw-rugs and rags held in place by anabsurd collection of improvised weights.

“Why don’tye just sit in the car? Or, y’know, the tent?”

“If Roxannafinds me in the car once more, she’s sworn to feed me to the crows. Besides,she took the keys with her,” Twigs and leaves crackled as Henrik settled intohis bower. His feet poked out from beneath one of the blankets, “The tent’smaterial might as well be cellophane for all the good it does.”

John lickedhis lips and smiled, silently moving to join him.

“Cozy,” heremarked as he pulled the drapery aside.

“It wasintended for a single occupant,” announced Henrik, glaring at him.

“They’re offby the creek, they’ll be a while.”

“Bully forthem.”

John ignoredHenrik and stepped inside, pulling the sheet behind him. Henrik gloweredupwards with both his hands shielding his eyes as a beam of light was nowshining directly upon him.

“Here,” saidJohn simply and ducked into a crouch before neatly folding himself onto hislap.

The Swede liftedhis chin but held his expression.

“I’m blockingthe sun.” … “Better?”

“Until theyreturn. Then what do I do?” grumbled Henrik.

“Wearsunglasses. Sit in the car. Stop whining,” instructed John and swatted him gentlyon the cheek with an open palm, “We’re gunna be here four whole days. I don’twanna have to kill you, but if you keep this up, you’ll be lucky if I get to yefirst.”

John’s handlingered on Henrik’s cheek as Henrik groaned miserably. They sat silently untilHenrik yielded, swivelling his gaze back to John’s with a more temperatedemeanour.

“Alright.”

“Scout’shonour?”

“What? No. I’mnot doing that.”

 John rolledhis eyes and relaxed, curling up against the pinned Henrik who moved to hanghis arms loosely about John’s waist. He sighed deeply.
