U.S. blockade of Cuba causes electricity system to collapse due to lack of stable fuel supply

On Sunday, Oct. 20, Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel pointed directly at the blockade policy of the United States government as the fundamental cause of the national collapse of the National Electric Power System (SEN) over the past few days. It is not complicated and it is not rhetoric that Cuba’s lack of a stable supply of fuel is because of the threats of fines that the US government through its Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) has levied on banks, shipping companies and any other enterprise attempting to trade with Cuba.

Some sanctions lobbying isn’t about a company trying to avoid sanctions, but trying to get them imposed on competitors. In 2015, [Tom] Coleman, the ex-senator, registered with other former U.S. officials at his law firm to lobby on behalf of Intrepid Potash, a domestic fertilizer company. The firm’s lobbyists asked State Department officials to tighten sanctions against Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, a close ally of Russia who was accused of human rights abuses. Inside government, some officials thought the lobbyists for the Denver-based firm were less concerned about human rights than about business competition; their goal was clearly to cut Belarusian potash producers out of international markets, said three former administration officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe private meetings. (The officials did not recall if Coleman was part of these conversations, although records show he was part of the lobbying team.) “You had these potash industry lobbyists trying to give us lessons on the intricacies of Belarusian politics,” said one former State Department official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe private interactions. “It was very odd — and very thinly veiled.” After a years-long lobbying campaign and another crackdown by Lukashenko on civilian protesters, the U.S. sanctioned Belarusian potash firms in 2021, pushing global potash prices to a 13-year high. A State Department spokeswoman said the potash sanctions were imposed because the industry generates revenue for the Belarusian regime. Intrepid Potash paid Coleman and his colleagues $1.5 million between 2015 and 2019. Coleman’s law firm declined to comment... Other U.S. firms have pushed for sanctions against their competitors, too. In 2022, after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the Alcoa Corporation, a major U.S. aluminum producer, pushed the White House to sanction Russian aluminum companies, while spending more than $1 million on a team of lobbyists, according to Senate disclosures. As economic hostilities have deepened with China, U.S. companies have significantly ramped up spending on lobbying aimed at pushing Chinese competitors out of Western markets. Over the past six years, U.S. entities — primarily companies — have spent more than $1 billion on contracts with lobbyists that mention “China” and “sanctions” as specific targets, although these contracts also often include other goals as well, according to The Post’s analysis of Justice Department records.

How Russia continues to deliver oil directly to the EU despite sanctions | UP. Investigation

"In the third year of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the sham nature of the civilised world's sanctions is becoming quite obvious. This is as obvious as the fact that if the sanctions policy of our Western partners stood on principles, Russia's economy would not have survived three years of war. Especially a war of such intensity involving so many missiles and other means worth billions of dollars. In fact, such economic levers were used to deter Russia's military aggression.

It is also clear that Russia is a petrol station country, and the lion's share of its budget is provided by money from the “black gold”. This means that it is oil that ensures Russia's ability to continue its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Russia's military budget for 2024 was about US$112 billion and will be increased in 2025. According to Bloomberg, spending on national defence and internal security will increase by almost a third to US$142 billion.

Such a disappointing state of affairs for the civilised world is explained by the fact that despite all the restrictions and bans written on paper, millions of tonnes of Russian oil continue to flow directly to the European Union.

According to the Financial Times, in the first year of the full-scale invasion, the EU paid Russia about €140 billion for oil and gas, which is more than the EU provided to Ukraine in aid in two years. About 80 of this 140 billion is oil.

It is sickening that, despite the American people’s rejection of the Biden-Harris administration’s policies on November 5th, the lame duck Biden-Harris administration has continued to betray and make absurd demands on Israel.

In recent days, after the election, the Biden-Harris administration again outrageously threatened an anti-Israel arms embargo if Israel did not meet its demands that Israel do more and more to move aid into Gaza by tomorrow (November 13) – despite the fact that much of the aid is stolen by Hamas, who sells it for hundreds of millions of dollars to pay and recruit terrorists to murder Jews. The Biden-Harris administration’s absurd threats and demands are also despite the fact that aid to Gaza has increased in recent weeks, and despite the fact that between October 2023 and November 6, 2024, Israel facilitated 1,115,128 tons of aid into Gaza, on 56,402 trucks and 9,979 pallets – including food (including fruits and vegetables, ready-to-eat food parcels, meat, poultry, fish, dairy products, eggs, flour, rice, sugar, cooking oil, etc.); shelter equipment; water; medical supplies; fuel; and infrastructure equipment. The administration is reportedly already holding up needed bulldozers that Israel already paid for.

As ZOA previously pointed out, the last time the U.S. had an arms embargo against Israel, when Israel was being attacked by seven Arab nations in 1948, over six thousand Jews ended up being murdered. Israel is again fighting an existential war on seven fronts against enemies seeking to destroy it.

Some people thought it was merely a pre-election ploy when the Biden-Harris administration ramped up its dangerous arms embargo actions and threats in May, and again in mid-October, and just prior to the election. But the fact that the administration is still pursuing the same anti-Israel threats now says volumes about this administration’s dangerous actual ideology, and raises alarm bells as to what else the administration might do to harm Israel during its lame duck period in power.

Additionally, on election day – the Biden-Harris administration quietly waived needed sanctions on the Palestinian Authority – despite acknowledging that the PA continues its heinous “pay-to-slay” payments to terrorists to murder Jews.

And during a press briefing a few hours before the election, the Biden-Harris State Department condemned alleged “extremist settlers” (Jews); bragged about imposing sanctions on 14 Jews (including brave Jewish soldiers combatting Hamas in Gaza) and 13 Jewish groups (including a group protesting sending aid into Hamas’ hands and coffers); and threatened that the Biden administration “will continue to use all the tools at its disposal” to hold [Jews] accountable “for violence in the West Bank and around the region.” The State Department spokesman also revealed that the Biden-Harris lame duck administration will try to undermine the Knesset law outlawing Hamas-filled UNRWA from operating in Israel; and accused Israel of not getting enough aid to Gaza (meaning to Hamas), etc. The State Department briefing failed to mention Palestinian Arab terrorists’ hundreds of attacks on Jews in Judea/Samaria, Jerusalem, etc.

Why is the Biden-Harris administration still not sanctioning the actual terrorists? Why is it waiving sanctions on the PA – which pays terrorists? Why is the administration instead threatening Israel and sanctioning Israeli Jews? And why is this continuing now that the Biden-Harris administration no longer has a mandate from the American people? Disgraceful and frightening!
