The League Sheds Spotlight on Complicated History of Great American Pastime

Quantum Leap Writing Prompt:

Sam Leaps....

He opens his eyes, and finds he's laying on his back under a wooden console, and after a moment is able to recognize that he's inside the TARDIS, based on the whale-song like hum in the back of his head, and the familiar tools in his hands-- he's helped the Doctor repair and upgrade the TARDIS console quite a few times now, passing these tools to the Time Lord and absorbing all the knowledge he can about this amazing technology from another world.

He wonders where the Doctor is now, and which friend he has Leaped into now. Taking a moment to absorb the scene, Sam recognizes the circuits pried open in the panel above him and remembers this is a tune up that the TARDIS often required since the Doctor refused on principle to get new parts from his homeworld and insisted on making his own patch repairs.

The repair is almost completed, and Sam is about to finish it himself from the memories he has of traveling with the different incarnations of the Doctor, but pauses when he hears a voice call out from somewhere above the console "Doctor, are you almost done?"

Huh?

Sam looks from side to side, wondering if he has somehow overlooked the Time Lord either laying beside him giving a repair lesson or maybe a pair of dapper-clad legs to rival Al's fashion-sense striding around the room around him, but the only legs he sees seems to be where the voice had originated from.

Frowning in mystification, Sam casually rolls out from under the console and looks around again, but he still doesn't see the Time Lord anywhere, and instead meets the gaze of a young blonde figure looking at him expectantly, dressed in what he he could only describe as coming right out of 1930s Britain.

"Well, Doctor?" The figure asked again.

"Oh boy." Sam realizes.
