If Mike's monologue was supposed to be some grand confession of love that empowered El enough to save the world (which we already know didn't happen but just hear me out), why would they, not too long after, make obvious regard to Max's lines: "there's more to life than stupid boys," "not Hopper, not Mike, you" etc, then a little later after that cut to a scene where El isn't even talking to Mike?

And even though I know those lines alone may not seem to counter Mike's confession in real time in the show, anyone who's watched the previous seasons would remember those lines from when Max was basically convincing El that Mike didn't love her like he should, or at least that his love wasn't the end all be all. Which if Mike's confession was supposed to be so powerful, why would they remind us of El's independence being so important to her after we watch Max die? After his "powerful confession" doesn't save the day?

Just seems weird.
